WHY Roundabout...seriously?!? ;) I'm razzing you just a bit, I just get frustrated because they're my favorite band and they have a HUGE catalog with a TON more gorgeous songs than one of their most-repeated radio hits. I like it, but it's been so over-played that I haven't put effort into listening to it for over 20 years. Our local rock station had it in too-regular rotation in the 70's and 80's. I'm like..."They have OTHER songs guys..." ;p

@@JoinTheProgress Agreed, but Roundabout is an accessible song for people just starting their prog rock journey and will amaze them enough to lead them to continue exploring Yes, then maybe even moving on to Genesis with Peter Gabriel.

@@JoinTheProgress Indeed it was played a lot, but that's partly due to the fact that so much of Yes' best work does not lend itself to radio because the songs are too long. "Roundabout" is a great first song to recommend to somebody who's never been exposed to Yes (and that's just about everybody under the age of 40) because it has the right combination of sophistication and accessibility (nod to @Mike micrael).

First saw Yes live just over 50 years ago . This song is relatively late for them 1983 ( after they had split in 1981 and re-formed with a different line up ) and really isn't typical . As others have said you really need to listen to something like " Roundabout " or " Yours Is No Disgrace " to get a sense of what the band was really about . BTW - also worth checking out the wonderful artwork of Roger Dean on their album covers - iconic !

He changes from addressing who he is talking to: Owner of a lonely heart to say how that lonely person feels : (Much better than a) Owner of a broken heart. Say, you don't want to chance it You've been hurt so before. to telling him to live again: There's no real reason to be lonely, Be yourself, Give your free will a chance, You've got to WANT to succeed....
Telling those that are living dull lonely lives to be brave and be open to love again

Yes is a British prog rock band formed in 1968... they had a style of writing and playing complicated musical pieces and epic songs, and set a benchmark for technical musicianship. Their music influenced a number of major bands like Rush, Iron Maiden, Dream Theater, Tool, etc... Yes went thru a string of members from their debut album in 1969 and today.
'Owner of a lonely heart' became a hit in 1983 after Yes had broken up in 1981 and reformed w/ new member Trevor Rabin (guitar) and original keyboardist Tony Kaye rejoining Chris Squire (bass), Jon Anderson (vocals) and Alan White (drums) for the '90125' album, which became a 3x platinum hit in the US. I think the song questions whether someone who is lonely and never fallen in love, is better off than someone who is devastated after falling in love and losing that person.
Yes debuted in 1969 w/ Jon Anderson (vocals), Chris Squire (bass), Tony Kaye (keyboards), Bill Bruford (drums) & Peter Banks (guitar)... By 1971, Steve Howe (guitar) replaced Banks... Rick Wakeman (keyboards) replaced Kaye... Yes hit a commercial peak w/ the albums 'Fragile' (1971) and 'Close to the edge'(1972).
Alan White (drums) had played w/ ex-Beatle John Lennon in the Plastic Ono Band... he was tapped to tour w/ Yes in 1972 and then joined the band, replacing drummer Bill Bruford... Alan White (not to be confused w/ former Oasis drummer Alan White) played on a bulk of Yes records, beginning w/ the live record 'Yessongs' in 1973. White and bassist Chris Squire were one of the best rhythm sections in rock music.
The band was successful w/ a string of 70's records that pushed the prog genre musically, but the decline of Yes in 1980 led to a split... A new line-up found renewed success in 1983, and released more records until the 90's, then the band's brand of prog rock became passe... Rabin and Kaye both left Yes by 1995.
A reunion of the classic Yes w/ vocalist Jon Anderson, guitarist Steve Howe and keyboardist Rick Wakeman brought some nostalgia back in 1996, but Yes fell into disarray again as Rick Wakeman left again... Billy Sherwood (keyboards, backing vocals) rejoined after a past stint in Yes.
The band carried on after 2000, and eventually replaced Jon Anderson w/ vocalist Jon Davison... Geoff Downes (keyboards) joined in 2011.
Bassist Chris Squire passed away in 2015... Billy Sherwood switched to bass afterwards.
Drummer Alan White was struggling w/ health issues and passed away @ age 72(R.I.P) in 2022. He was replaced for touring by drummer Jay Schellen.

That's too much info for them right now, lol. But to correct you, I'd rather point out that ABWH in 1989 was the first true reunion of prog-era Yes, via Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe. That was "Yes," even tho they couldn't legally use the name.

There are definitely different eras in the Yes catalog. Since 1980, my two favorite Yes albums are Open Your Eyes and The Ladder. Both are heavily influenced by vocalist Jon Anderson and are more poppy than the progressive 1970's Yes, but there are some great songs on both albums.

@@mikemicrael5749 Dude, OYE was a *disaster* ...it was largely the work of whats-his-name, the guy filling Chris's shoes. It was a trite, predictable really bad attempt to produce a commercial album that disappointed Yes fans on the whole so much we almost disowned them. The worst album they ever did, I literally couldn't listen to it more than once. Even some band members since that release have said it was junk.
The Ladder was decent. But Magnification was the most spectacular release they had in the past 30 years. Even Talk was *far* better than OYE, at least Trevor was still writing and producing some quality material outside of his misguided country side line.

"90125" (Album UPC & title) was a comeback album for Yes. With this album, they turned from total command of the pinnacle of progressive rock and from perhaps the most complete mastery of music composition and instrumental ability of any band ever, to a simpler pop-oriented sound. This proved to be a commercial success for them. While hard-core fans like this record, many consider it to be dumbed-down from Yes's incredible musical achievements during the prior 15 years. You owe it to explore much more from them. Any of the more mentioned songs off of The Yes Album, Fragile, Close To The Edge, or Going For The One ... That will give you a true taste of what they are capable of.

The video is kinda nonsensical. This was their "pop" phase. The 70's was their "prog" (progressive rock) phase. They had different line-ups throughout the years, with two primary line-ups, this being one. I could go on and on about them, I know almost everything about them, but will leave it at that and watch for future reactions to Yes where I'll comment more.

Dang, even after realising that you say "know what I'm saying" all the time you're still saying "know what I'm saying" all the time! Double dang!!

To come back as another person is reincarnation, but talking about coming back as an animal is called transmigration of souls, which, not that it matters I don't believe in. Reincarnation I do.

Love your reactions but one tiny criticism, we can't see the video at all especially when the background is full of different colours and patterns. Is there some way you can make it seeable?

I think you're talking about reincarnation, when you die and come back as an animal or something else.

Listen to the song without the dumb video. The video is pointless and adds nothing to this great song. It just detracts.
