🧬 Bryan Johnson does TONS to improve longevity, but is his posture advice one of those things we should follow? 🤔
I'll dissect his posture advice and see if it matches the research.
Let's just say it's time to redefine what good posture truly means. 🔄
Prepare for some myth-busting and a fresh perspective on maintaining a healthy posture. It's not a pose you hold, but something so much more. 💃🕺

There’s one thing Zac left out… Bryan Johnson literally did fix his posture. So how can his advice be completely wrong if it worked for him?
Clickbait
May have changed standing position, but unsure what his range of motion in upper body looked like and was this strategy the best way? Have to look at posture differently, which is the point of the video.
And I didn’t say it was completely wrong, there were some points I agreed with. Though many of the recommendations do not fall in line with contemporary evidence
Which studies did you disagree with that I listed?
I’m not here to dispute studies, I know very little about clinical studies on posture, but I think rational people can accept a proposition as true based on a logical mechanism and perceptual evidence. For example: I have been a client of a PT, one of Bill Hartman’s top students, for over a year and a half. I have seen postural improvement from doing the exercises he’s given me. But recently I started seeing an Alexander Technique practitioner, and I’ve seen more improvement in my posture in the last month from maintaining a vertical head and neck position and a straight spine while
bending than I have in the last 8+ months of doing the PTs exercises every day.
So you bend forward and try to stay vertical and that improves posture?@@MrOreoman11
thanks for the video, very useful tips
Thanks, sir! It works for me and alleviates my pain.
Hey. Just wanted to say that your point regarding "vein collapse" when upright points to a misunderstanding of the jugular vein stenosis problem evident when viewing the "Stand up straight" section.
It is hypothesized (and extremely likely as there's no good alternative explanation) that "collapse" (narrowing) of the veins stem from a mix of:
A(healthy reason): Higher rate of drainage down to the heart when upright than the outflow from the brain due to gravitational effects, leading to low pressure in the internal jugular veins.
B(unhealthy factor): Impaction of the jugular veins due to weight bearing compression, which in individuals with Internal Jugular Vein Stenosis, can lead to entirely squeezed internal jugular veins at the point where they are on their way out of the spine (there is also rarer disorders where they are impacted elsewhere). This restricts the flow out of the brain, leading to low pressure in the internal jugular veins outside the spine.
Lying down will have a reductive impact on both these factors.
In people with Internal Jugular Vein Stenosis, there is so little room for the veins to not be squeezed that B can also be highly impacted by neck posture.
Many medical professionals, including neurologists and even a lot of neurosurgeons, are not aware of this and think "vein collapse is vein collapse", when actually vein collapse caused primarily by A is a healthy and will be asymptomatic while vein collapse caused primarily by B is very unhealthy and will cause worsened neurological health due to the problems that come with drainage rate deficit.
Also I must say, thanks for sharing helpful exercises that take into account a lot of factors of spinal posture health : )
Especially the last exercise is actually very good for people with Internal Jugular Vein Stenosis.
Thanks, Zac. I am by no means any expert, but after following yours and Bill's work for almost 2 years, when I saw Bryan's "tips", it made me feel like an adult watching a baby making their first steps 😂
Lol I was surprised by a couple though!
Bryan Johnsons posture progression if better than anything else i have seen on youtube so far
Exactly. his entire research so far is by far the best public info ive ever seen yet! and his posture work is incredible compared to anything else ive seen on here.
He does have some good suggestions. I do think though that his posture advice isn’t in line with up to date evidence on what could work best. Probably better than nothing though
I do think it’s cool and admirable that he tracks so much. He even has some stuff I agree with posture-wise. Some of it though isn’t best use/evidence-wise regarding posture and there are much better alternatives
I really appreciate the nuance and how you covered different angles of this issue. It would be awesome to see you and Kjetil from MSK neurology have a discussion about these things.
Thanks, that was awesome. Gonna try these.❤
Awesome!!! Happy moving!
nyc work dude
lot of learning
Thank you man you really listen to your fam.....
I try!
uh
A few missed points in this video:
-The tall posture is also aiming to strengthen the longus capitis muscle which runs anterior to c1 and so can help increase space for the IJV at this choke point.
- similarly the IJVs completely collapsing in upright is a bit of a misconception. They do partially but leaning forward in bad posture kinks IJVs over c1, further constructing flow.
- the avoidance of looking down is also to limit stretching of the posterior cervical ligaments.
- no problem with the levator scapula exercise. It’s clearly to isolate that muscle so the effects on rib cage and breathing is not particularly relevant.
Thank you for the comment. The head positioning you are mentioning makes sense regarding the space at c1.
You have the ask the question why the head is going forward in the first place? This is typically happening as a strategy to compensate for upper airway resistance. This happens much younger than IVF. To say the breathing aspect doesn’t matter doesn’t seem to correspond with the evidence of the posture itself.
Well holding a posture may temporarily offload choke point, it likely doesn’t impact pressurization on the neck. Shape has to be able to change. Altering the shape happens by altering breathing.
@@ZacCupplesPTPlease link a quality study proving that forward head posture syndrome is usually merely an adaption due to 'upper airway resistance'. I have seen alternative data so would be greatful if you can please show the studies that prove that this statement is backed by strong science and not assumption, poor science or wishful thinking.
This is a highly significant point if you're correct. And if you're correct it should be clear in the literature. I'm not sure there is scientific consensus here but hope to be proven wrong, if possible.
@@ZacCupplesPT I'm just wary of the word "typically" here, and therefore what follows from that presupposition.
Apart from the shoulders, does the sternum have to stay up though (most of the time)?
For those who know, they know.
Thank you for all of your valuable information Zac!!!
Appreciate you homie!!
Zac is it possible to ask you to make a video about winging scapula is it good or bad, cuz ma left scapula is like winging compare to the right ones, and it is difficult to “feel” lower back trap or muscles around the scapula - left upper trap is kick in. Thank you very much
Can do 💪
I have found that being able to maintain a strong neutral posture is a very helpful skill to have because it maintains balance between the opposing postural muscles, as well as gravity. Frequent movement is also very important but not always possible. I don't really find these sorts of light exercises helpful in most cases because most issues are caused by imbalances, so it requires identifying and correcting those specific imbalances.
That’s good that it helps you! And I would agree, usually specific stuff is most important
"in most cases" . What are your findings regarding degrees of movement limitation among your clients/patients? Do you have better experiences restauring relative motion by applying exercises that are rather compressive in nature? I don't want to appear nitpicky, but I am generally curious.
@@neinbruderja7519 I'm not a PT so I don't have clients and I'm not sure what exactly you mean by compressive exercises or relative motion. But one example for myself is that I'll sit with my hips externally rotated to avoid crushing my nuts. A loaded butterfly exercise helps me maintain balance between the abductors and adductors and that improves my walking and running mechanics.
@@DavidBreneisen glad you've found something that works for you. It wasn't very clear your were talking about your own personal story, since you've literally talked about *knowing, how the majority of cases have to be treated* . Thought I'd learn something new today and was curious for some evidence.
@@neinbruderja7519 Sorry I thought muscle imbalances and their prevalence were a common knowledge thing at this point.
His ijv were being blocked by c1. Kjetil helps alot of people with ijv compression and tos.
Does belly fat in wide isa results in compensations. And if yes do we target belly fat first or the compensation.
Depends on the degree of fat. If the amount limits gut movement in the ab wall, then yes. Why not go after both?
If a relaxed posture is the best, what’s the cue to stay upright? There’s obviously people with better posture. Broad chest, shoulders back…but how do I manage the pelvic tilt? I feel better mentally and more confident when I focus on my posture. So what’s the answer? What’s the cue? I don’t wanna look like a lil geek neck with a hump in my back. I don’t understand this attack on posture lately.
Good posture goes beyond standing as if you've got a sticc up yo a$$, such as being able to attain high genuine ranges of motion and moving efficiently. Do you really think, taking an ongoing effort to overextend your spine and squeeze the heck outta your rhomboids is desirable?
Surprised he doesn’t mention the pull-over and other ribcage expansion exercises
good one!
Hey Zac!! The exercise with the foam roller(breathing) must be done on both sides or on right side that we saw in your video???
Most people would do okay with both
Make a full video on hyper kyphosis
So how to fix my neck/shoulder pain misalignment without creating more pain..
The moves I provide in the video are a great starting point for many
@@ZacCupplesPT ok will start 👍
watching your videos is my hobby right now, you are the master;
your ilustrations are very fun 😅.
Thank you so much!
I don't get it; is there a problem in standing up straight? Or are you just saying the invisible string trick is not enough?
A bit of both. Standing up straight doesn't fix the issue because the reasons for slouching come down more to airway and lack of available movement. The invisible string trick doesn't address those 2 areas.
I saw the video of Bryan Johnson and had to laugh about the „very effective“ levator exercise
Levated AF
minute 9 to 10 of this video are amazing ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, i actually do this with the same type of roller and it helps !
Awesome!!! Glad it helps!
Thanks for the click bait but he does not spend 2M on a posture routine lol.
You here tho 🤣🤣🤣
Zac for president 🏆
Hahaha I’ve committed too many things I don’t want the public to know 🤣🤣🤣
Fixing posture is pretty simple: sleep on the chin/ribcage/knees, and keep the chin and shoulders up throughout the day.
Hi, Zac. I suffer a tinnitus that happened a year ago. Did a bunch of tests including brain MRI still havent found out the casue. After watching this video im betting my money on it. What do you think?
It could be. I’d check with your doc to see it safe, but sometimes movements like this can help with tinnitus
Why don't you schedule an appointment with Bryan
Is that a thing I can do? Lol
@@ZacCupplesPT dude...... Ur a fkn Dr email him and be a benefit to the data and research. Yes, you're needed.
@ZacCupplesPT I would love to see a discussion with you and him. It would not only benefit you and him, but help improve on the future of health for everyone and the blueprint protocol.
I got posture problems too so I appreciate what you both are doing. Ya both are experts in your respected domain.
@BryanJohnson@@ZacCupplesPT Bryan is a pretty nice person and seems to listen to feedback. But make sure to make it about how to make things better rather than why Bryan is wrong. Firstly, his advice wasn't horrible, just maybe not as good as yours. Secondly, Bryan's protocol figured out that he had this issue which other medical doctors didn't do without the protocol. Thirdly, in Bryan's exercise video he humbly mentions, "Also, I'm not an expert. So, while I just do these different exercises others may have better technique. So just keep that in mind. [Thumbs up] " czcams.com/video/sYyVi-H-ozI/video.html
Excellent video Zac!!! If someone is very kyphotic will these execises be helful or you recommend some other execises??
Thank you
Still not a bad starting point, just gotta make sure to not crunch.
Vids here might be even better - czcams.com/video/KZiKmtxxdo4/video.html
It’s hard to take posture advice from someone who doesn’t have the best posture….that’s why it’s so easy to take Bryan’s advice as you can literally see the difference in his body. We know what the human body should look like and what proper posture should look like. He has it.
The concern is it’s a poor definition of what it means to have good posture. It’s not a static representation, but the ability to express multiple dynamic ranges. That’s the contention point. It also doesn’t look at why someone would have a “bad posture”. We aren’t meant to sustain one given posture for an extended period of time. We are meant to move.
@@ZacCupplesPT there are explanations as to why people don’t have good posture. It’s all in the science that he uses. I’m not sure what his range of motion is, but I do know that he has had the best sleep a human can have for 6 months straight and he looks like he is in optimal health as if scientists have been working on him, which is exactly what’s happening. The point is, that bad posture happens for a number of reasons that we created ourselves, look at tribes in Africa. Do you see anyone slouched over with bad posture? It’s man made stuff that causes bad posture. Yes we are supposed to move but head down or leaning in to a computer for hours is all you need for bad posture. He explains that as well.
Good posture was also recognized many many many years ago, we know what good posture should look like, we are all humans, therefore we can attain that posture. The exercise’s he does are based on science and what works. If your neck is slouched over how do you fix it? You need to put it in the right place or gradually get to the right place. That’s what he has done and continues to do.
I think Brian Johnson was working with the guy from @mskneurology , who is a pretty smart dude. But Zac is right, that he doesn’t consider rib cage expansion / compression, which is a big deal for posture
Great content, you sound like Nicolas Cage 😅
What would test the health of jugular veins?
That I’m not sure. I would think doppler but it’s out of my scope of practice. Would refer to neuro
Close your eyes, and just listen to his voice... and imagine Nicolas Cage XD Same voice!
Hahaha I get that so much!
I'll give you props for gaming the CZcams algorithm and getting into my feed, but this was some of the most clickbaity nonsense I've seen in a while. Nice posture too
Thanks. Also, you sound a lot like Nicholas Cage.
if you close your eyes you can pretend Nicholas cage is running a physiotherapy channel
So...thre's really not much wrong with Bryan Johnson's posture work or advice.
Look at both people and tell me which of the two dudes has better posture?
Take a measurement and tell me which one of those has the greater ranges of motion. That person could even look like he has an even greater stick up hisazz, if he decided to want to look like that.
Just proof that you can spend 2million on a coach and still get suboptimal coaching.
Lol it happens
At point 4 you move your wrist, they told not to do that 😅
His Nicholas Cage impersonation is amazing🙃
Lol I get that a lot
I closed my eyes and pretended Nicholas cage was teaching me
He did fix his posture, did he not?
Don’t know. Didn’t measure what mobility he has available, which likely plays a greater role
Yes he did, because the goal was very specific and he had a lot of experienced technicians measuring freedom bloodflow around the brain. So the pathology was effectively resolved, mainly by the improvements of behaviour and biomechanics outlined. It's all documented online.
You don't know?@@ZacCupplesPT
Phone or book is the same.... Does he read like this too'?
Hahaha that’s a great question
Re. disagreements in comments. Bryan's exercises are done every day/week and will be done for life. This will over time change structures along with muscles?
Won’t likely change internal shape, which is key to pressure management
Mate what was the point of this?
I think neck is too weak to hold proper form in the first exercise
I hate basketball but you are good.
Thank you so much!
Zac you're absolutely on spot here, just you slowed down a bit too much 😉
I appreciate the feedback on that. Glad you liked the vid otherwise!
@@ZacCupplesPT Zac btw do we need 120° shoulder flexion for that downward dog variation? or else we'll compensate somewhere...
hope bryan sees this! lol
Me too actually. Think it could help him even further
Technically, spondhylosis is not a fancy word for arthritis...
its not a 2 million posture routine nice clickbait
Glad you could make it 🤣
@@ZacCupplesPTbut the actual video is great!
just dont like the clickbait
Hi Zac, you know that you have bad posture? next thing you going to sell hair growth products :)
Bad posture for what task?
why oh why oh why dont all you guys on CZcams know that many people who really need to breathe better cannot get down on the floor
shoulders down and back have ruined American fitness. it seems like people outside of the US allow the 3 natural curves of the spine occur
I agree. It’s definitely an interesting cultural phenomenon
close ur eyes, he sounds like nick cage.
Lol I get that a lot
Hi posture routine isn't 2million
Thanks
So many people trying to get clicks for Bryan's downfall. Lame, can tell just by the title
Off topic, I love your voice.
You sound like Owen Wilson🏆🏆
Hahaha thank you so much! I get that a lot
dude sounds like Nicholas cage.
Get that so much!
Bryan Johnson's pills,HGH,, testosterone , diabetes medisin gone do him no good ..
That’s a bit out of my area of expertise to have an opinion, but I admire his tracking of everything
he didn't spend 2M $ for his posture and trying to wrong him while he obviously corrected his posture is for me only a way to get some views by using his name. get some help man
What parts did you disagree with that I said? He may change visual appearance, but that’s only one component of posture and IMO not best method for most.
There were some things I agreed with on his routine, some I disagreed with.
What help do you suggest I get?
2m $ posture routine? kinda missleading , dont u think
Kjetil is actually very good specialist, on youtube you can find at least 30 "specialist" but just a few will be good at what they do, nice clickbait and this channel is not what I would recommend to a friend, too much focus on how to make videos longer.
And he is not standing up straight but with curves, again clickbait and probably distortion of his videos
Nicholas Cage
I just want to find some rockets!
The reason for my poor posture was high-arched feet.
Great another person with bad posture, preaching how to improve posture. What brian is doing is completely fine. I think it could be improved by changing the angle of force (with cables for example) but it addresses the issue in contrast to all the useless junk you are showing.
If you are in the know on posture and know he is giving bad advice, why do you think his statements on other health issues are valid? He's a self-promoting guy touting sciency stuff that he claims is science to make money, build a following and LARP as some prometheus.
I can only really comment on what I know, which is movement. All of the other stuff is outside of my knowledge base to be able to critique. If his markers show progress from where he was, then he must be doing things that work for him. Does that apply to the entire population? That’s a harder stretch. He has a lot more than the supplements going on from what I see
You need to look up the word nuance lmfao, this reaction sccreams 12 y/o
Titel : everythinf is wrong.
Video: agrees in some points.
Me thinking: clickbait and dislike even though the moves are helpful.
It’s actually Everything Wrong. There is no is. So that does leave me room to agree on points, but hope the exercises work well for you 😉
I think you need a better thumbnail. You look significantly worse than Bryan Johnson. I don’t know if that was the intention or not, but that’s what I got from it. The video seemed pretty informative though.
Well, maybe that’s not fair, because I’m only 20 and I also look older, and more tired, than Bryan Johnson.
I appreciate the feedback. Vid has been growing so hesitant to make any changes at this point
You sound like nicholas cage
I get that SO much
