Small shop foreman here in southern Ontario. 2 apprentices, 2 technicians (including myself). Flat rate with a guarantee, bonus on tech and apprentice hours per row and on shop hours per ro. We have much less equipment to look after and special tools but do mostly the same as you.

I'm in the same boat as you right now. Total of 5 techs, 1 hourly 4 flat. I'm the only one fully certified. I seem to be doing just about everything your doing already lol. It seems as though we have too many people that just don't care because they have a ""I'm not getting paid for it why should I do it attitude"" or ""if I do that I won't flag as much"" I've been aiming to be a foreman too when it's decided we need one. I just pray the efforts of the good ones go unnoticed. I know it happens.

I'm head of the shop, sort of the same responsibilities as you. I'm in the Ag and Turf equipment field though. We are all hourly employees with efficiency bonuses. I'm the go to for figuring out everyone's issues, being the only one with 'all' the tools and certifications. I'm also the only technician out of our store for service calls on the road. We have 3 techs, 1 sales, 2 people in parts, 1 service manager and a shared service writer who helps us from another location across town.

I just think it's pretty neat that all of your stuff is accessible. We have to have parts pump our oil, get special tools, get the key for flush machines, etc.
We also don't really get any updates unless it's 100% necessary. Hopefully that newish car's problem can be diagnosed with global obd 2!

I am a shop foreman in a smaller Toyota dealership. We have a total of 7 flat rate techs and 2 quick lube techs. I dispatch work, help techs who are struggling with a certain job. I do comebacks that may results in lemon law or buyback issues. I do the majority of the diag work. I keep track of the state safety and emissions stickers. Like you, I also deal with organizing the special service tools. Lastly, I train all of the apprentices, which is the part that I enjoy most. I am also flat rate which is where 99% of my pay comes from, but I get a small (very small) amount of bonus added based on shop hours.

Love the videos! Everything is well explained. We are a 12 person shop. 7 tech's, Our shop foreman has been with the company 40 yrs. He started out rebuilding pumps, injectors, and turbos. After 20ish yrs he started doing in chassis repair. Electrical, diagnostics, programing and R@R. Repair. I have been in the automobile field 15 yrs and 5 yrs diesel/automotive. We are paid hourly. Our "third" wheel in the shop seems to be a screw off. Taking a 30 minute bathroom break. But people notice these thinks. "Me and the shop foreman " so they don't last long. it's hard to find people that want to work . Don't F off on your phone!!! A hard work ethic is hard to find on a hourly pay schedule.

@@RustbeltMechanic I think I may have gotten a little off topic, in my previous post. I'm not a shop foreman. But I do know what needs to be done in the shop.after 20 yrs You know that yourself! . I tell my boss what needs updating or replenishing. When we are running short on bolts, or plastic push pins, bulk oil getting low, wheel weights, shop lubricants, Ford IDS that needs to be renewed, etc. I do get paired hourly and it's "my" job, to make sure I'm productive. If I'm not fixing vehicles,to go through the shop and get things ordered we need. One thing I think is not right about flat rate. Is do they expect you to "clean up" on your own time???? You do trans or oil cooler lines and it's messy. Is that figured in on flat rate??? You can easily have 30 minutes in to degreasing the vehicle and cleaning up the work area. That's part of the job! And should be billed for.

I just took the shop foreman position at my dealership, we're a John Deere dealer and I'm at one of the smaller branches (2 field Tech's, 1 shop tech and me) I've had a hard time getting out and actually working on stuff. I'm usually running around taking phone calls for service work and loading/unloading equipment or giving my fellow techs a hand on jobs. Im paid on an hourly system but still try to bill out my time (they want 50%) but everyone in the shop is paid hourly with pay raises and bonuses based on "flat rate" efficiency

I’ve been a team leader of 4 guys in my shop for a couple years now. At times I’ve had up to 10 or so people on my team. I’m about to be the “shop Forman” in our used car/internal work shop once the remodel is finished with and finished. Going to be around 8 guys plus detail. Management in our store sucks and I’ve been really looking forward to it but at the same time I just see myself losing even more money because I’m sure they won’t want to look out for me or take care of me. As a team leader we only get a dollar for every hour someone on our team turns, plus our hours. Which doesn’t add up to much usually. Our flat rate pay is ridiculously low to begin with and it’s a real struggle sometime even working 60 hours a week in the shop. Plus my shop refuses to buy tools, I end up buying everything minus like brake lathes which is just ridiculous. Usually they reimburse me but rarely. There’s so much extra stuff that you have to do and manage. Plus all the drama that goes with it in my shop anyways. Idk. 2020 is gonna be a hell of a year.

I work at a kubota dealership and if I wasnt hourly I would be broke in 2 days. I'm not sure how other places are but I have to wait on parts more than 95% of the time. Sometimes those parts take more than 2 weeks to get to me. I'm not exactly sure who is to blame for this but kudos to those who work at well oiled dealerships and business that can manage on the flat rate system.

This is identical to my shop. Guarantee pay is nice (many guys haven't even heard of it) I am the foreman at a GM dealership. If it where possible my manager would have me diag everything. About every other vehicle my guy's "fix" comes back, Then I end up diagnosing them anyway. We just fired three guys for lying on there resume. So currently my manager literally has me diag EVERYTHING, He will start turning away customers when I'm too backed up, Meanwhile he just feeds tires & brakes to the techs.
loaning my tools, & assisting technicians, Updating tools, Etc.. We have been hiring & firing for a couple years now, Constantly training new guys Just to see them out the door. Is starting to take a toll on me. I have my hands full then some

Sounds similar to my situation, trying to hire decent techs now is near impossible. I came from a ten tech mopar dealer now working at an independent shop that also does 4wd modifications, I do ALL of the diag work and all the heavy repair engine or trans swap work, all of the shops around me have the same complaint and that’s they cannot hire decent techs, I would rather get a kid from the local community collage green and train them myself.

Not a foreman here. Maybe in the future? I think that I’d really want to be a salaried worker especially at a larger shop. It’d also be nice to get bonuses for doing a good job and keeping my techs at a good efficiency level. They do well and the shops kept up then I don’t see any reason why I shouldn’t be getting money for that kinda stuff.

This is the exact reason I take my semi trucks go dealers.
A hole in the wall shop charges less. Yes. But do they have the special ? Probably not.
Do they calibrate any torque wrenches or any tools for that matter ? I doubt it .
Do they have instant access to all required bolts and nuts or clips? Or they they reused stretched out bolts and worn clips?
They u just don't get the work flow.
I can take my truck to a hole in the wall with some retired super tech who does great work maybe but he may be busy and I still around for days losing work. When my truck is parked , I lose money. The dealer will have me in and out asap.
But that's a double coin. The dealer will only fix what's asked and most of the time want u in and out super fast. Most times they will not stop mid job to try and get approvals for more work unless it stops the truck dead in it's tracks from leaving the shop.
It's a tough time dealing with shops and dealers. But for the most part , it's the dealer that I got to and it's because guys like this who understand he importance of proper tools, work flow, and training.
