      ​@@starsjosephfrost also, I heard reversing the propellers was a mistake (ofc hindsight is 20/20) because of the turbulence it caused around the stern, messing with the rudder, apparently, there is a chance they could have cleared it if they kept going either fully ahead or tried to reduce the speed in a less drastic way, ofc back then they were most likely trying to minimize damages, and unlikely that any captain would have done soemthing different but yeah, there is that

      Ya that's true when you have a mechanical. The titanic was hydraulic when the wheel turned it pushed a mixture hundred feet or so away through pipes into a steam engine that would make the rudder turn. There was no lockout, the more you turned the wheel there would be resistance but you were just giving commands to the steam engine.

    Fun fact: The trying to dodge the iceberg is the reason it sank. The ship was made to take head on collisions with its base being sectioned off. It would've taken on a fraction of the water it needed to had they just hit the iceberg. They instead tried to dodge it, ripping a massive hole in the side of the ship, filling it with water.

      @@foxtrot-LuvThe Titanic’s steering wheel was actually just mostly a symbol of Authority. The steering wheel didn’t actually turn the ship. When the captain turned the wheel, the underbelly would get a telemotor signal to the underbelly control room. Then, they’d activate the hydraulic pistons for either left or right steering, and all the workers in the underbelly would go into double-time throwing coal into the furnaces to feed the pistons.
      It was incredibly slow. This simulator is just a novelty game for shits and giggles.

    I'm just going to put all the problems into one comment.
    One, ship wheels don't work like that.
    Two, they were surrounded by icebergs, it was called a landmine of icebergs that they couldn't see that well in the dark
    Three, icebergs are often bigger underneath the water and given how ships are shaped I can guarantee you by the looks of that screen, it is still tearing that ship up 😅

    Yeah, thats not how a ships wheel works. Guys on the titanic made a mistake. They pulled hard to port but put the engine in reverse. The engine being in reverse didnt do much to slow them down. But it made the ship lose steering authority. They would have been better speeding up.

      If I remember correctly, there was also a forensic analysis a while back that showed if they just kept their speed the same, and hit the iceberg head on, then it would've suffered a lot of damage, but only to the compartments that could be sealed, and the Titanic could've limped into port at New York.

      They didn't reverse the engine. That was just in the movie.... In real life it takes much much more time to reverse it.. They actually just stopped it.... Perhaps it would've been better if they left the right engine running.....

Although I don't know how the Titanic handled. I remember mooring a sail boat that was crap at steering without a little bit of power on the engine. That was always interesting.

      Really couldn't. first of all: the guy that had the key to the binocular room (why was it in a locked room anyways) wasn't on the ship, AND it was the middle of the night, AND most of the iceberg was underwater, so it would of been practically invisible

      The captain didn't steer it was the job of the quartermaster and it would become increasingly harder to turn the wheel due to the mechanism connected to the rudder doing it's thing and the helm would eventually be hard over which happened when the crew spotted the iceberg but it wasn't enough.

    The steering is wrong. In the Titanic, you had to turn the wheel to starboard to turn the ship to port.

      It’s called tiller commands and yes turning the wheel left would move the rudder right thus turning it left.
      So if I said hard to port you’d spin the wheel right to turn left. It’s a bit weird but hope this helps :)

      It was a matter of 1 second and 6inches. Reacted 1 sec earlier 1 late hit it. Instead it just grazed the iceberg and tore just 6 inches into the second water tight compartment. Would have floated otherwise.

      we dont know that for sure for all we know had she of head-on colided she could have split open and still flooded over the top of the bulkheads

      any number of things could happen maybe she had a defect we dont know about

    Sadly, that's not how a ships rudder works. It only turns to about 90° and the ships speed and mass make it slow to turn quickly. Funny enough some experts think had it run straight into the iceberg it would stayed afloat long enough for everyone to be rescued.
