Crazy Little Thing Called Love was written by Freddie in 10 minutes in the bath of his Munich hotel room in 1979 as a tribute to Elvis. Some people think it was written by Elvis. Notice that Brian changes guitars 3 times. I think this version of We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions is the best. Incredible energy. Freddie had a throat infection but you would never know. If you notice at the end of Champions when Freddie brings his hand down a light on the stage turns red. Queen rehearsed for a few hours every day for a week to get this timed perfectly. If you went past the red light the power turned off! Most of the bands barely rehearsed or didn't rehearse at all. Queen are way too professional for that! This is why Queen are the best live band ever! Sorry about your power. Hope the weather gets better soon. Loved your reaction! For more great live performances - White Queen Live at the Hammersmith Odeon 1975, Fat Bottomed Girls - Live at the Bowl Milton Keynes 1982, Under Pressure Live at Wembley 1986, Who Wants to Live Forever Live in Budapest 1986.

Freddie did write "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" as a tribute to Elvis - you're right! It took him like 10 minutes in the bathtub at his friend's apartment in New York, haha. He could change his voice however he wanted to suit essentially any musical genre, even without any vocal training. Check out his opera collaboration songs with Spanish opera singer Montserrat Caballe! "Barcelona" is the most famous one, written about her home city but also for the '92 Olympics, which Freddie knew (and told her) that he wouldn't be around to see. The video isn't actually live singing, as Freddie was already ill then and didn't quite have the energy to perform live anymore, but his voice never sounded better. "Exercises in Free Love" is particularly astounding - I promise it's him singing, not her. It was just a demo he sent Montserrat for a song idea without any words, and she was absolutely stunned it was him (he sang the female operatic parts he had planned for her, which she didn't know he could do - sing countertenor). As for different vocal styles in Queen, listen to "Stone Cold Crazy" (live at the Rainbow is best) for one of the earliest examples known of speed metal - it was later covered by Metallica. There's also songs like "Seaside Rendezvous", done in a 20s-30s vaudeville musical style. "Cool Cat", off of the (much-hated at the time) album Hot Space, is also sung entirely in falsetto by Freddie. It was just he and John on that song (John played all the instruments, and it was his idea), as the rest of the band weren't fans, haha.

ALL very good suggestion! I’d like to add DRAGON ATTACK live in Montreal ‘81. In case no one told you... that was NOT a Queen audience. Queen was not announced as playing at Live Aid, as they decided to perform after publicity was done. Every group/singer had 20 minutes only, that’s why some songs were shortened. Also, Freddie sang against his Dr’s advice, as he had a throat infection. Please stay warm and safe out there in Texas! 😊🙏

@@awordfrompresidentpat1484 Wow! I’m glad you’re sold. 😊 I did grow up listening to Queen, but that’s thanks to my mom! I’m only 31 haha so wasn’t around for it either. 😂
I’m also glad the movie pulled you in even further, but please know that it’s quite inaccurate. The band never broke up - Freddie wasn’t even the first one of them to go solo (Roger had two solo albums by that point). They did have disagreements (they argued a lot, but Freddie actually said that’s what kept the band together, since they all were strong and got a say) and pursued individual things, but there was never a time where they all weren’t talking or anything like that. Roger even sang backup for Freddie’s solo song “The Great Pretender” and appeared in the music video. They were very close.
Freddie did get a much bigger financial advance for his album which likely caused tension and he was negatively influenced by Paul Prenter in the mid-80s, but Brian and Roger themselves said only a week after he died and was getting attacked by the (homophobic and especially AIDS-phobic) media for his lifestyle that he was never consumed by drugs or out of control. They called him kind, generous, and incredibly loyal to his friends (though he did love to party and had some wild, almost legendary times for sure). But seriously, what 80s rock star didn’t? No straight ones get attacked for it, even ones with multiple arrests and abuse allegations. No one in Queen has ever been arrested or accused of anything like that. All truly good guys. 👍
Also, they had toured just a couple of months before Live Aid (the whole notion that they hadn’t performed together in years is just completely made up). I do see how it creates drama and it did revitalize their career at a time when they weren’t sure how to move forward together, but yeah. Some of their biggest performances - like Rock in Rio - happened earlier that same year. Freddie also didn’t know his diagnosis until 2 years after Live Aid, in 1987. He found out shortly after their 1986 Magic Tour. “The Days of Our Lives” documentary on CZcams is a much more accurate and factual look at Queen!
(And this isn’t as important, but Freddie also didn’t just randomly introduce himself to the band one night and audition - they all knew each other, and Freddie went to many of Smile’s shows. He was roommates with Roger and they ran a fashion stall together. He’d also been in other bands and musical pursuits himself, starting back at boarding school in India. He didn’t just randomly start singing one day, hahaha).

After Live Aid, QUEEN toured with Freddie all through Europe in 1986. It was called the Magic Tour - a grueling tour consisting of about 26 shows in France, Spain, Netherlands, Ireland, West Germany (at the time, Germany was still divided in 2 by the Berlin Wall), Belgium, Hungary (which was under Communist control at the time), and other countries as well. Most of the time, the band played more than one show in each country. The tour ended in the UK with two shows at Wembley which were totally sold out and one concert outdoors at Knebworth where I read that 150,000 people attended. There are videos on youtube of the full concert in Budapest, Hungary and the 2 concerts at Wembley. They are great concerts!

Already clicked the “Like” button!! Queen practiced for a couple weeks getting their 20 min set perfect. They brought in giant white clocks to be sure the timing was on point! Queen took this charity event very seriously while other artists not so much. Queen was added to the artist list late so many of the crowd didn’t even know they were performing!! Queen’s 20 min set was perfection including the song list, songs were from the top ten billboard list, each song was written by one of the members of Queen, and Freddie was never happier! Roger said it was truly Freddie’s day to shine!! All the artists including the “who’s who” of music knew Queen had stolen the show!! The rumor is that David Bowie had to follow Queen & when they were done he said “You bastards” (endearingly, of course). Psssst - Freddie bends over so his bum is towards the audience as a big “kiss my arse” to Queen’s former money grabbing managers!! Hahaha!! Every time I watch this I get the goosebumps!! It was fun watching the expressions on your face! Freddie wrote CRAZY LITTLE THING CALLED LOVE in honor of Elvis!! 🥰💕

Loving your insightful reactions, President Pat. Yes, Freddie wrote Crazy Little Thing Called Love as a tribute to Elvis. He also wrote a tribute to John Lennon after he was killed. Freddie used many kinds of tones and vocal styles - listen to My Melancholy Blues, I Want It All, Cool Cat - each a totally different style. When you rewatch this, pay attention to the crowd. This 20 minutes was an amazing feat of capturing the audience so quickly, getting them involved and active - doing the Radio Gaga Clap, the call and response, taking over a few lines of Crazy Little Thing on their own, etc - that by We Are the Champions they were like a swaying sea of humanity, 70k+ people who had already been at the concert for many hours hearing dozens of singers and bands. It's really incredible.

Someone once commented that Freddie held the microphone in one hand and the audience in the other. No truer words were ever spoken! The size of that audience with everyone excited and participating was mind boggling! Queen was always on point whether in the studio or on stage. There's a video on youtube which shows their practice sessions for this concert - how they honed each of their songs perfectly to fit into 20 minute time slot allotted to each band. The result was MAGIC!! And, yes, the song "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" was Queen's tribute to Elvis. I read somewhere that Freddie wrote this song in about 10 minutes while taking a bath. I don't know if that's true. But it would not surprise me if Freddie had new music twirling through his brain every minute of every day! I wish I could have been at Wembley on that day but consider myself so fortunate to have seen them LIVE at other concerts in the 80s. That was a long time ago but it feels like yesterday! At the time of Live Aid I was serving in the British Royal Marine Commandos in a refugee camp in Ethiopia. We listened to it on the radio. We were surrounded by the full horror of the Famine, but when Queen came on the radio those poor soles who were there even reacted in a very positive way. I remember that a lot of us Royal Marine Commandos were crying watching some of the children dancing along, I'm teary eyed just remembering. I looked around at men I had fought alongside, who were tough, hardened Royal Marine Commandos who had fought a life and death war against Argentinian's in 82. By the end of Queen's set we were dancing with the children. It went along way to help build their trust in us. The famine is only one of many terrible memories I have from 34 years of active service, and 2 years hospitalisation. But when I remember the smiles on the children's faces, and their laughter at the terrible way we danced always reminds me that humanity will always find it's way through even the worst of times. I only watched it for the first time last year, my son put it on the TV. A lot of memories came back and a lot of tears.
My amazing Wife took me to see Queen at Wembley, U.K., in 1986 two weeks after I got back from Ethiopia as a surprise. I saw Queen live 6 times in all, they were incredible live. And yes, I am an old fart.
