When looking at the film Deadpool - it has a lot of pretty outlandish moments - From gruesome murders, made to be funny; to all the fun things you can do with a tiny hand - This film is just filled with messed up themes.
But one thing that you wouldn't expect to be too crazy, is what happened behind the scenes when it came to making this film's visual effects.
Because compared to typical superhero movies, which are often packed to the brim with VFX filled action and spectacle - Deadpool was much more about comedy, story and character; so you'd think it would just be a standard outing for the VFX artists who worked on it, just using their skills to enhance to the film and get the plot from point A to point B.
So when I decided to do a little research into how they made Deadpool's mask emote, I was shocked at the VFX rabbit hole i uncovered - a rabbit hole of creativity and ingenuity dug by some very unsung heroes, who are some of the only reasons - that it is was possible to pull of a film like Deadpool off on its low budget of 58 million Dollars.
So, put your brown pants on - as we explore the crazy world of Deadpools visual effects.

The mask animations were also not in the initial budget. They were an agreed to thing to take a look at once the rest of the movie was mostly complete and make a judgement on based on whether the movie appeared to have come out good enough to merit the extra costs to go in and animate the mask. This has a lot to do with how they ended up animating it in such a post-process way, rather than traditional VFX supervised pipeline fashion.

Great video! I do have a minor critique though: You spent 3 minutes in the beginning of the video explaining the problem (which could've been done in 30 seconds) and then you quickly glossed over the actual technique. For example, you didn't mention that they have to track all of his head movements in 3D so that the distortion and lighting overlays sits correctly on top of his face in every shot.

I hate to nitpick here, but you kind of explained the method they used for the head in a really convoluted way that isn't accurate to the FXguide article. It has nothing to do with camera lens distortion. They created a fake blendshape setup using a 3D render in 'headspace' and 3d track of his head converted to UV space. Basically manipulating the UVs of his head to give a more accurate warp. The reason why a lot of people assume the head is CG is because they also used a CG specular pass to make the lighting blend better with the warp.

  • @adam346

the curving around the edges of the frame is called barreling... cheaper or less expensive lenses/zoom-in lenses tend to have more of it around the edges and it takes quite a high-quality lens to avoid it entirely but most photo's made by cell-phones these days don't have it at all since software to auto-corrects for it. More often than not it is like bokeh in that it is a deliberate choice being made by the photographer than an artifact of crappy equipment. Very neat though that they used that concept to effectively short-cut the 3d animation for his facial expressions... makes sense though, since our muscle structure tends to only expand or contract, why not do the same but with the mask?

    2:54 - 2:59 this, precisely, is what made the 'kickass'/'hitgirl' characters/films feel so different, I think. • @JoeStuffzAlt

This is brilliant because it's believable that a mask like that would naturally stretch. The mask's color looks slightly different from the rest of the suit, but it almost adds a touch of realism to the costume. Maybe you need to breathe through said mask, unlike the rest of the costume. The area around the eyes especially are mostly black, so warping/distorting probably won't be as noticeable.

This is because both masks are built from non-copyrightable elements (pre-existing cuts, materials, stitching techniques, human head shape, ...) and only the complete overall look is somewhat protected. There are only so many ways you can cut the material to make a mask that works, only so many surface patterns for cloth and leather, only so many positions the eyeholes can go, and so on. Most of them have either already been used too long ago or by too many people or are too simple and not unique enough to be protected. You have to go very artsy nowadays to make protectable mask elements.
So changing the colour and putting it onto a completely different character is enough. Just like you'd only need to change the face shape of a Darth Vader mask and nothing else to be able to use it.
BTW, don't forget that there's a difference between being in the right and having the money to defend against a lawsuit that'll cost you millions to win. Copyright doesn't go as far as most people think.

@@thescruffinator8830 there actually is a long history of legal battles around Captain Marvel. DC sued Captain Marvel's (SHAZAM!) orginal publisher, Fawcett Comics, twice because he was considered a rip off of Superman. They lost the first case but won the second. This caused Fawcett to stop publishing Captain Marvel and meant they lost the trademark. This allowed Marvel Comics to create their own Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell) and aquire the trademark. When DC bought Fawcett Comics they started publishing the orginal Captain Marvel again but Marvel Comics forced DC to rebrand the character. The character was set still officially called Captain Marvel until the New 52 but DC had to use different name for titles and branding so they went with SHAZAM!

I have completely animated a comedy short using just a high resolution image of the Night King from Game Of Thrones. I thought about modeling him and animating him as a CGI character, but that was a bit too time consuming for the budget.
I eventually came up with a similar idea to what the animators in Deadpool did and it looked great. I took the one image in Photoshop and cut him up into many pieces, each on their own layer. Then I copied the facial features (eyes, nose, mouth brow). Even all,of the visible fingers were cut into sections and it was a huge stack of layers. I had 58 layers by the end.
The copies of the faces were then taken into the Warp or liquify plug-ins. I was able to tweak his brows and paint eyelids closed on a layer and then there were layers with eyes half closed, fully closed or scrunched real tight. That was all created using a clone brush or just painted with air brush.
I imported all of the PNG files, layer by layer, into Toon Boom Harmony, where I could pin them at the joints. Unlike Animate, which just couldn’t handle all of those high resolution images, Harmony just chugged along, in real time! I didn’t even have to render the animation to see it. I created a key frame and rotated a joint and it could play in the timeline with no problem.
I had to animate frame by frame of him putting on shaving cream and it looked great. I just pulled an image of a man with shaving cream all over his face from the internet and just cut out the cream and worked backwards erasing parts of the cream, so it looked like he was spraying it on when run in reverse. I was using any trick I could think of. It all worked great and the expressions were very cartoon- like, heavily exaggerated. His face moved like rubber.
It is sometimes that necessity that is the mother of invention. The fun thing was how stylized it came out, unlike any animation I have seen giving life to just a still image. I didn’t know that was how they were animating Deadpool, but that is awesome that they came up with a similar solution than I did?

It's so subtle, I only noticed a couple of cases where cg was used for the mask, like where he breaths out a little smoke. The rest didn't register at all. Now I see his eyes and eyebrows distorting in every shot! Mind blowing!

the sam raimi spiderman movies did not have peter take his mask off every five minutes, he probably didnt even take it off 5 times total while suited up, great research

I'd like to recommend a series on youtube called "The Wizards of Aus". It's about Australian wizards.
The behind the scenes video shows that all the VFX were done by one guy, who also happened to be the writer, director and star. This series looks *way* better than it has any right to for its budget.
What reminds me of this video is the way that the VFX are often used to tweak practical costumes. For example, there is a guy in a practical shark-man costume whose face is mushed around in the computer to give him facial expression. It might even be a lower budget version of this, but it still looks great.

"They only created a fully detailed head (since the specular pass still needed to give all the tiny details) animated it extremely convincingly, tracked it 100% matching to the plate, and then had to do high end compositing work integrating it into the correct depth/working around occlusions/finding ways to only distort the head instead of also things between the head and the camera (glass/atmospherics/etc.) to save on doing OTHER integrations like adding dirt and stuff digitally (which they'd also have to match in the spec pass) ... so it was sUcH a SiMpLe eFfeCt!" Dude.... it's WETA. It's not a 3 guy shop contributing to a multi million dollar movie by doing the itsy bitsy vector distortions and some minor specs. This is still high end VFX. Just because they didn't do the whole 'paint out head and replace by completely rendered head' process (which I'm sure they had to do for dozens of shots regardless, that's how real life works), and they might were able to cut some corners and save a bit of the budget doesn't make ANY OF THIS simple and easy. Cheers.

Not sure why the comparison to lens distortion. It sounds like photogrammetry/distortion masks based on cg depth masks. So unless I’m missing something it doesn’t relate to barrel or pincushion lens effects.

I think that the mask looks fairly real actually. I get that it probably wouldn't be ax expressive, but given that deadpool is practically immortal, he could probably wear a mask as tight and flexible required to move the mask with his facial expressions. It doesn't seem like an extremely unrealistic thing that could happen and as it was executed rather perfectly It just doesn't seem like it was edited at all to me. I do get that it had to be edited, but god damn does it look natural.

There are bulge and pinch tools in Photoshop or GIMP or what have you. This is basically a more complex version of that. And it is... Brilliant. I never really questioned it, I assumed maybe there was some rig in the mask but now that it's pointed out I admire this film so much more. Also, only $58 Million? The Flash was like a $300 Million film and can't hold a candle. More VFX definitely doesn't make for a better film.
