- This week, the top skaters outside of Europe competed in Shanghai at the 2024 Four Continents Championships. Yuma Kagiyama, Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier, Deanna Stellato and Maxime DesChamps and Mone Chiba won gold. There were standout performances from Junhwan Cha, Ava Ziegler, Shun Sato, Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko, and Emilea Zingas
and Vadym Kolesnik. A federal lawsuit was filed against U.S. Figure Skating and a former Olympian. And Gracie Gold's book is released on Tuesday. We break it all down on the latest edition of 'This and That'.

Look at Yuma's speed going into and out of jumps, steady edges, square shoulders, no bobbles, no snow, and his glide on the landings is perfection. If everyone in the field skates a clean program, Yuma is always the one I will be most interested in watching.
I think Ilia’s issue is he has zero competition at nationals. Nathan had Vincent to push him. Ilia handled the pressure at the GPF extremely well. I think he is skating better under pressure this season. I do agree that Yuma will be his biggest competition. This was the best I have seen Yuma skate since the Olympics. He was PERFECTION in the short.
Christina Carreira spent a summer skating with Scott Moir and is being mentored by Madi Hubbell. That school has done a great job with both her and Anthony.
Impressive. That is a productive summer from someone who clearly "wants" to do better, works hard, seems to be making the most of a careful choice.
@@ddjr6673 I think so. I mean Scott was filling in while Anthony was injured. But they made good use of the time to help her improve.
@@anusharasalingam7712 That sounds like an awesome opportunity, not that it should make you nervous or anything to get private lessons from the most successful figure skater in the world 😅
I really like carreira/ponamerenko even tho I can't spell their names. 😊 And I'm not well-versed in ice dance rules, but they seem pretty talented to me!
agreed, Maddie and Scott have done her some wonders this season!
Deanna is going to have a Fusar-Poli moment on the ice if she doesn't mellow out! I feel bad for Max.
😂 This is hilarious…b/c it’s so true!!
Was totally thinking that after the SP and really felt for Max. At least Barbara kind of had a point at ‘06 Olympics…
The same 💯!!! 😂
Totally! She's way too intense lol. If she makes me anxious, imagine what poor Max must go through every day!
@@chuck4pele do only I have Aljona- Bruno vibes? 🙄
Love me some Deanna but I feel like Max is gonna need to be in like a battered spouse support group or something. Max gives very Golden Retriever vibes and Deanna gives black cat vibes.
I think the reason the men have more variety is that they’re generally older, and they have more time to develop an artistic pov. Also women are under more pressure to conform to a very strict “feminine” presentation. Look at Amber: she’s 24 and she has material that she selected after she grew up and got to know herself more and it shows.
Always great to wake up in the UK and have you guys on when at the gym - thank you again. Pet peeve: when skaters do not hold their ending pose. Don’t break the spell too soon. No matter what has happened in the program. Watch Torvill and Dean - always hold for an extra 4 beats at least- and yes, Jonathan - some of us know what you said about Paul…
My pet peeve too; I've noticed it the most with the Korean women, but it's unfortunately very common.
I can watch Yumas step sequences (both) over and over again. He is amazing. I am amazed with Ilias athleticism but I find myself wanting to skip his step sequences and just go to jumps while watching him.
Hana Yoshida’s program are not the typical Japanese cookie cutter programs… yo, let’s have some Koo Koo Fun!❤😂❤
I love that programme! Such a refreshing change 😊
like four hours after the video and still no words of admiration for Mone Chiba victory in sight? Can't wait no longer, sry.. Love you, Mone-chan‼
Mone was sublime ! ❤
Totally agree with you. She was anything but generic and her short is simply sublime.
Maybe cause she’s mind-bogglingly boring with tiny jumps
@@leonida1234She didn’t show any expression or emotion during that short program, even though the choreography and her skating skills were great. She’s lacking personality.
@@evanperilstein5308 She's humble and avoiding vulgarity, and THUS shows her personality. Sometimes it goes this way, you know. Not always you have to rush the judging box naked.
Maddie Schizas never straightens her legs on anything, literally. Her spiral, falling leaf, exits from jumps, all of it done with bent legs. As for Yuma vs Ilia, Yuma is so much more disciplined during competitions whereas w/Ilia, you nvr know what he's going to throw in at any given moment.
Ilia now reminds me so much of Nathan Chen in the run up to the 2018 Olympics (at least Nathan had better skating skills). Ilia has all the potential to be world champion, but like Nathan before the 2018 Olympics, he (and his coaches) haven’t figured out how to deal with the gold medal favorite pressure.
Maybe this was why Ilia’s dad looks really mad when he got off the ice after his FP at National’s. 😬
I think he was translated in saying “What was that?!” to Ilia.
I don’t think his father is ever mad when Ilia fails to deliver his elements… it’s to do with something else…
@@specialj67doesn't matter if ilia can get his jumps consistent he'll get his pcs scores. It's been happening in ladies and men, if you're from big feds as long as you're consistent enough pcs will rise regardless of actual skating skills
@@yohanes2034they pretend components and technical are related and throw huge pcs scores at anyone with big jumps. it’s awful. ilia is impressive but his scores are a joke. he skates like a junior. he’s improving but he would be more motivated to improve his skating skills if his scores actually reflected what he did.
@@fsc4823 we have seen this movie before. If I'd counter to someone who has mad improvements but yet his pcs is somewhat same is Mikhail Shaidorov. Ilia skated to better SP program and all US media gaslighting us that he getting 9s is warranted of artistic improvements
Yes! Thank you for saying that Ava could have won Nationals. If for some reason Isabeau couldn't make it and Ava got to go to Worlds, I can guarantee she scores higher than Amber. A lot of people made fun of Mariah Bell, saying that the only reason she won Nats is because people were sick with covid. But when she got to Worlds, she did her job and got 4th place. I know that Alyssa got 3rd, I'm just saying that Mariah scored high enough to give us a chance, as opposed to showing up and coming in 12th or 15th.
I am so over the IAM dominance and, as so brilliantly put by Carol Lane, their costco programmes. The british judge here at 4CC had piper and paul THIRD in the RD - come ON, fear and gibson aren't even AT this competition!! it's infuriating to see such blatant block judging and I wonder what the skaters really think... I fear skate canada won't politick hard enough against IAM at montreal and we'll be led to believe that C/B are ten points ahead of the other two teams despite skating at a snails pace and never letting madi's skates touch the ice.
The fact that the Russian team will be getting the bronze instead of being disqualified as a whole, feels like a back room deal to me.
Top three men were just stunning. Jumps aside, i find their skating and most importantly programs vastly superior to Malinin’s. Jun’s free program is especially intriguing to me.
Kinda agree, they were fabulous
The worst camera work was panning to the audience in the last ten seconds of piper and Paul's program
It looked like an accident to me. Like the camera was dropped or bumped, because it was fixed pretty quickly. But it annoyed me, too.
they did that with Carreira & Ponomarenko too. I was like what happened?!!
My thoughts on Deanna are the same - they not going to do the clean skate she wants until she can give up some of the control, enjoy herself and let it happen.
I totally agree with Jonathan, Deanna is very off putting with her dismissive behavior and this time I was shocked at what I saw. Everyone has to tiptoe around her moods and I can only imagine how draining that can be. This behavior really makes me root for the Japanese rather than them.
Good job Dave. Please do an episode of theories surrounding TMZ and Kamila. Not only the cardiac but also the ocular indications that has are quite fascinating considering she had eye surgery right before the last Russian nationals. I think this would be a really interesting topic to discuss with Maya or Jonathan ❤❤❤
(I am in no way expert in figure skating, but I did some dancing in my time and) I so admire the way Yuma Kagiyama skates *in* the music❤. I also love the way music varies between "slow" or more "lyrical" and very strong, impressive. And the speed of his skating in both. I really enjoyed watching his programs!
I actually watched the youth olympics because, similar to the ISU youtube channel, the livestreams were accessible on youtube in my country, it was easy to click in from my frontpage when I was feeling bored and the commentary and busy groupchat made for extra entertainment. I only watched 3-4 skaters from US nationals that I knew about, and only weeks after when I remembered to look it up to see if anyone had uploaded it. So... yeah. Just a non-US experience.
But how could you tolerate the commentators? They were horrendous. I almost inhaled some coffee when I heard the woman with the terrible-sounding voice say that there are a lot of good "man skaters" in France 😂😵💫
@@trylogic4084 To answer genuinely: I was raised in a close-knit immigrant family. I'd say that my tolerance for mistakes, misunderstandings and cultural differences in meaning and intention, is more than most people. Knowing and giving grace. Knowing that how the same comment/statement being said is judged differently often down to differences in contexts. It is fine if you don't like it then you don't like it, and it's not an excuse for comments that does obviously make children feel belittled and shamed then that should be stopped/prevented. But the example you gave is not one of those, so I am just responding to that.
Your volumes are very different. Jonathan needs to be louder in relation to Dave.
We can try for next time.
Usually it’s the opposite actually lol
For me anyhow usually Jonathon is louder compared to Dave’s volume (not this video I agree)
yuma is far superior to ilia; the former is an all around skater; the latter can jump BUT not consistently which is surprising; ilia has poor technique and lacks artistry his body and positions are amateurish;
i think his jump technique is pretty good most of the time, to me it’s everything else that’s severely lacking. think he needs to humble himself, stick to 4 quads and really push the second mark for the rest of the season. maybe one day he’ll actually earn the scores he gets 🙃
I don't know how anyone can say Ilia has poor technique. His jumps are high, effortless, and he has a nice air position. They're usually clean, or as clean as anyone else can do them! The way the scoring system is set up, all Ilia has to do is the more difficult quads, and he'll outscore anyone doing the easier quads...namely Yuma. It's the same tactic Nathan used for years and years to beat Yuzu, to the never-ending frustration of the Fanyus.
Флутц,преротейшены и полные лезвия на флипе и лутце,плохая позиция в воздухе не у Ильи Малинина,а у Юмы который намного лучше 😂 Сказать такое о технике человека выделяющегося идеальной чистотой и классикой

Malinin is giving Trusova vibe. And it is not a good vibe.
Dave -- loved the Carol Lane interview. Do you think you could interview Igor? Plans for his team and of course his thoughts on Eteri given all the drama
Maybe!
Even Meagan & Eric had bad music most of the time, so I'm not surprised the Japanese pair's music is so bad.
Stop using your sister to choreograph world champions programs. I've never truly like whatever she has made. Some were okay and tolerable but most are bad. Just imagine the potential of M/K if they got Lori's programs

Hase/Volodin
Metelkina/Berulava
Miura/Kihara
Conti/Macii
Beccari/Guarise
What an open field!
I would put money on Hase/Volodin.
@@christinethorp3684 Kind of yes. Their Free skate is almost unbeateable. The lift mistake from Euros will not happen again.
Wide open. It will be exciting!
If M/K were on their conditioning in the Olympic season, it’s a clear winner. But this season with their conditioning and lackluster programs, it’s indeed open field
I wouldn’t be surprised if Metelkina/Berulava win the title
Thank you for discussing Lyndsay Thorgren. I felt so bad for her. With her injuries, the problems at Nationals compounded with having to zip off to Four Continents has really tarnished her in the USFS eyes. She did say she loved her new SP btw! She is now 18, HS senior, possibly college bound? Not sure of her goals, but I hope if she continues, I would love to here that she got some great programs for next year but also some coaching changes with hope to improve her jumps and expression. She has all the good basics, but a new point of view might help greatly. Look how much Paul Whylie and the rest of your teachers have helped you to succeed! Love all the interviews too!
Jun is still recovering from his injury. But he showed great SP and LP. I think Jun is the most attractive current male single skater. He has his own firm artistry and expressiveness.
Deanna reminds me of Aliona Savchenko's "Did you double? " moments.
Dave for US Figure Skating President! Bring back Peggy and Dick and the Ladies Final on Saturday night! Who does not miss Dick critiquing all of the ladies layback spins and Peggy commenting on how "pretty" certain girls were (oh the good old days). Thanks for ALL you do and bring to keep our sport alive in the US and the world.
If the sexual assaults are happening at parties with alcohol, that's not a figure skating problem, that's a society-wide problem. (I work on a college campus, so I know!) I am in NO way excusing rapists, who are still fully responsible for their actions drunk or not, but the binge drinking culture, so normalized in our culture today, has to be addressed as a structural problem, and it is everywhere you find young people.
I agree. Skaters tend to be incredibly sheltered. These parties must've been a huge thing for them. A chance to attend what is probably seen to them as a normal young adulthood party (obviously not being assaulted, that should never be normal.) I'm not explaining myself correctly, but hopefully you get the gist of what I'm trying to say.
Hello, I have a request. First of all, I love your CZcams channel, but I'm hard of hearing and I can barely hear Jonathan. Is there any chance that maybe he can come closer to his mic or please wear a microphone. Please I love you guys, but I always struggle to hear Jonathan. Thank you, much love, to you both.
You can’t hear Jonathan because Dave doesnt let him talk.
1:02:40 the way Jonathan feels about opera is the same way I feel about skaters using the same three musicals. There’s more to the genre than Phantom and Moulin Rouge!!
Jonathan: if you could pick one unique Italian opera program for one skater, what would it be?(question open to everyone of course!)
I have to disagree about the Japanese skaters all having very ice princess programs, it's very much not true, sorry a list is coming. Kaori definitely doesn't, Rinka absolutely does not and neither does Hana Yoshida, Rion doesn't either, she's doing bollywood techno and her beautiful enchantress free, Mako Yamashita has a very intriguing free, that's definitely not ice princess, I don't remember her short, Yuna Aoki is skating to Lana del Rey, Mana Kawabe is doing something pop and Bolero, regrettable choice but not ice princessy. We are left with Mone who is doing an ice princess free and some sort of tango in the short, but honestly her skating skills are so good I could watch her skate to anything, Rino Matsuike who is doing ice princess and Mai Mihara whose whole vibe is ice fairy and I can't imagine her skating to anything else, she's perfect for that. So statistically definitely not true that they are all the same, it's likely true for many of the Japanese skaters that only skate domestic competitions, but not for their top skaters.
This coming from Dave and Jonathan who in previous episodes praised several of these Japanese women for doing something very different with their programs just enforces the "white people can't tell Asians apart" stereotype, not helped by the fact that they rarely remember any of their names and often resort to "that Japanese girl." The way everyone just gets lumped in together with the selective amnesia is strange.
I can’t wait to read Gracie’s book.
yaaas, Jun - Hwan Cha was AMAZING !!!!! loooove his content this year, sublime music choices, choreo and costumes, what a lovely outing
Thoughts on the Australian pair? I think the have potential - very nice jumps from both of them - if they get the lift positions to be a bit better and work on the twist. But they seem very supportive and have a lot of promise imo.
I thought they were fabulous!
Your comments about RikuRyu's music choices felt disproportionally harsh, even if they *could* be improved by getting better material for their programs.
If you spoke more than one language OR bothered to just look up the translation, you would understand that the lyrics of this (In Fact Very Non-generic) Jean-Pierre Ferlain & Céline song are pretty much perfect for the dynamic Riku and Ryuichi have with each other with their adorable smiles and hugs and warm, wholesome vibes. The song is exactly that joyous program that Jonathan is asking for in this exact video. I'm a bit miffed that as an opera singer he didn't to look into what the song is about because it's not in English before assuming it's not something that is actually is. "How *could* this resonate with them?" Maybe it does but they weren't able to fully convey that resonance while being woefully underprepared with the amount of training they got and probably highly concerned for Ryu's post-injury condition and recovery?
Also the comment about choosing Céline Dion for a Montreal worlds season being "pandering" and how "it's not 1999"... As if thematically relevant music is automatically bad. As if people suddenly aren't allowed to use music that's from earlier than the last 5 years or there's something dishonest about it. As if Baroque, Classical and Romantic era pieces still aren't used by skaters every season. I understand the concern about getting too generic but let's not jump to the judgements that quickly. Like I said, the song Riku and Ryuichi are using actually suits them.
I think RikuRyu's SP music for this season is a bit too unifrom throughout and it lacks the kind of an emotional journey that RikuRyu could totally sell and thus doesn't make the best choice to skate to. But the FS choice is spot on, they would have just needed more time to get comfortable with the program and show what it's about.
Honest question: is Rafael even interested in being by the boards for skaters anymore? It seems like he’s not coming to competitions for anyone and he said after Nathan won that he didn’t want to do that whole thing all over again. Also, Malinin is using Ito, Yuzuru’s costume designer for this year’s outfits. Why they don’t look more like the Japanese men’s costumes he designs, I have no answers. Short program costume looks good, though.
Good God, I hope Ilia never wear anything that resembles a Yuzuru's costume. He would look ridiculous.
@@AT-jm4dlHe already did that when he wore a SEIMEI costume as a tribute to Hanyu several years ago - he apparently still has it too.
First international solo competition is Picken Dance Classic in Reston, VA. It’s held every year and was picked for international this year! Hosted by Washington FSC.
If you did a personality test on Deanna (not MBTI, but Five Factor model which is more telling), she's classic High Openness, High Neurotic and off the charts high Consicentious. Like, scary high. She's not pressing pause on her whole life at 40, becoming a citizen of another country and launching a partnership with a skater no one's ever heard of (high O) to experience a second career she can enjoy. She's doing this to win a gold in Montreal through Milan AND to do it by skating perfect programs (super high C). Clean won't always be enough. Perfection will be needed to win at world's and Olympics. So she has broken down her scoring on every element and all of her PCS. Anything less than level 4 with +3 goe is a miss and will be seen as unacceptable in competition, so she'll show it (high N). This season I will bet money her goal through the season was to establish herself as a 75 SP / 140 LP team. Day in, day out. Hasn't happened. The frustration is coming from the missed goals in scoring and companion clean/perfect skates. What did she say to Josee as she was coming off the ice after the long? Something like "but I do this every day in practice" and Josee shut her down. She's extremely frustrated and a bit lost right now on how to implement a plan to achieve her goals in competition. She's not on track to her goals. And stuck. But I have little doubt she'll get past that quickly and will be reading the riot act the first day back in training. And ngl, I'm here for it.
You know what, I relate to Deanna.
In some small way.
Recently, I’ve been feeling stressed out over not having enough time left in my hands to do everything I want to achieve as an adult skater because I’m 32 now (which I know isn’t that old). But because I came back to skating again at 29 after quitting at 25, and then having faced a major setback in my progress because I couldn’t find any skates that fit me at all until I started wearing my Risport Prime boots (never imagined I needed these skates because they were meant for triples/quads). I just felt like I lost a significant chunk of time. 2 years is significant for this 30-something year old skater. Especially when I’m constantly surrounded by other skaters saying “I want to achieve (…) before I’m 30!”. But I’m 33 this year… would I be able to learn an axel by 40?
And I’m overly critical about my progress and skills, and I need my 90s-era coach’s tough love for guidance. I depend on it. So I’m super tense. And when I have a bad skate day, you know I’m having a bad day. I can’t help it. I can’t regulate my emotions and stop feeling like I’m about to smash my skates against a wall.
So yes…
I understand Deanna’s frustrations, especially considering what she might have to sacrifice in order to come this far- being away from family, home, stable job, in order to fulfil her skating dreams, and she feels pressed for time.
It was nice to see her in a calmer state at the end of her free program as she hugged her partner. She definitely needs self-love and more kindness towards her partner. They need each other.
That said, after her ultimate retirement, I hope Deanna stays in the figure-skating world. She obviously has so much to offer. I don’t know in what post-competitive athlete role, but there’s so much left in her beyond being a competitor.
Disagree on Rinka, to me her programmes and style really stand out, I love her :)

@@Ladybug-ez6odYes, that’s correct. If there was going to be a switch of order, it would have happened at Euros and here.

Ava's axis looked really off here. A lot of folks mentioned it in the comments so it was quite noticeable.
Yeah, it wasn't like that at NKH. It wasn't perfect, but it was much better than at 4CC.
Yuma skates beautifully, but he's going to need to do something fast to give himself a personality the public can latch onto, and not turn into Uno Dos. (If you'll forgive the pun.) If Shoma sticks around, they'll be gunning for the same marketing niche in Japan.
Wow, you guys have really negative feeling about Danny and Ellie. I actually like them and I do think their East of Eden is a strong moment. I love the green costumes - it creates a visual that no one else has so it's memorable. I get that they shouldn't be medaling with those kind of mistakes, and that the state of pairs isn't great, but I really enjoy watching them and I think their overall skating is really strong.

Hi Dave and Jonathan
Was waiting for you 😊
❤️
About Anthony Ponomorenko's brown shirt - if you've ever read the book Perfume, The Story of a Murderer, you'd understand. The character is, well, it's doing him a favor saying he's really, really rustic. He can barely speak, has no education. He had a horrible childhood. When his mother had him, she was a fish seller who just dropped him in the buckets of fish innards under the table. If you want to put him in a black shirt, maybe, but that still seems too sophisticated to me.
The shirt is ugly and doesn’t read well on the ice. Also, you shouldn’t assume that every judge is going to get the reference just because you do.
Do you really expect nine judges from all over the world to be able to comprehend fish innards during the program? These are not two kids from the stage.
@TheSkatingLesson You would know better than me. I wasn't trying to contradict what you said, I was just trying to offer some information as to why they might have put him in a brown shirt. That's it. Still, it's really just a matter of opinion. Are the judges going to like their program any better if he's wearing a different color shirt? Out of curiosity, what color do you think you should wear?
Less than 11 minutes in and again, I wonder how anyone in their right mind would want to be an ice dancer with these type of infuriating politics. Papadakis/cizeron couldn't go to Sochi Olympics because they refused to switch coaches?! Even with their obvious talent?!
I know, i know, get over it, it's just how it is.
Guess who was doing the lord's work summoning the judging spirit of Lori Parker at Four Continents. The US judge in the short program lowballing Yuma with a 103. And the Chinese and Hong Kong judges played along in the free program lowballing Yuma with a 193 and 195. The judging gods for certain federations will do their best to not reward quality. Would be interesting to see what happens at Worlds.
At least some of them are consistent with the corruption. You can always count on the US judges on that :)

The Italian judge at GPF gave C/B a 137.46 in the free dance.
Chock and Bates will be ready for Montreal. It’s in their training city.
Dave is right that the best thing Jorik and Leona Hendrickx could do for their careers, especially with the Russians eventually coming back, would be to join Rafael's team. If Isabeau struggles at Worlds, I'd love to see her making a coaching change to the Cricket Club. I really enjoyed the women's competition at 4 Continents and I'm thrilled for Mone Chiba. She reminds me so much of Satoko. She got massive scores this weekend, so she's definitely a dark horse for the world's podium!
isabeau has jumped like that for so long i worry nothing could fix that muscle memory
@@fsc4823no coaching change can help Isabeau at this point. I was actually quite shocked that she made it to and through Nationals
@@fsc4823I agree, but at least Isabeau wasn't falling on jumps and screwing up spins in previous years. If she just showed up and landed everything at Worlds, even if they don't like her jumps, she could still at least help us get three women in there next year.
Who is still a member at the cricket club? I thought "everyone" left ?
Jonathan bringing up Colt has me ☠️ ⚰️ 🪦
Some people do the test of which Sex and the City character are you.
I do the test of which 2000 Russian Women’s gymnastic Team character are you:
Sveta Khorkina
Ekaterina Lobaznyuk
Yelena Produnova
Elena Zamolodchikova
Which one are you? Comment below.
Danny and his partner landed both of their SBS in the program, that's all they need.
But missed both the throws.
@sallyjean2250 thus the 'that's all they need" in my comment. Dave and Jonathan couldn't understand how they got on the podium and that's the answer. My answer was a critique of the discipline that 2 sbs triples landed can make a team who flopped on both throws land on the podium.
I love torgashevs sp
I do, too. Did you see how they gave him a level 3 for his step sequence? I was so pissed.
Hi Dave & Jonathan, I don’t know if either of you notice this but it looked like in the pairs short program that the Japan team 2 footed the throw jump. But, it seemed they were given a positive GOE for that jump. What’s up with that? Dave, you been killing it with all your videos the last few weeks. Great job. 🥇
Diane ⛸⛸⛸
Yes, I noticed this because Chelsea Liu two-footed a throw that was otherwise great and lost almost a point in GOE. The judges clearly were told to be hard on them.
Pairs, except for Deanna & Max, was just sad to watch. To me, it's like Ellie and Danny are US champions and this is all we have?
:(
also, Jonathan always so quick to defend P&C every chance he gets, also - the great back being showcased - relating to the young American dance team of Igor, that's a page straight outta Tessa Virtue's book ;) not to say everything else about T's skating wasn't near perfect, but the open and accentuated through costumes back was always her thing :) ahhh, good times
Why does the TV coverage ALWAYS cut to some random fan in the crowd soon after a performance? All we want to see is the look on the skater's face, which is infinitely more interesting than John and Joan Randomfan waving a flag. Skater X has a triumph, Skater Y has a disaster -- the look in their eyes is everything and that's what we want to see. Yet they always cut away to fans in the stands. When will the TV people understand this is not the way to do things?
If Ilia would have problems to skate under pressure, he wouldn't do so great at Skate America and the GPF ( where he was leading after the SP and competing against a 2x WC, olympic medalist, European champion and 4cc champion), nor would he land the quad axel in competition. He's one of the most mentally stable skaters out there. He is just not peaking at Nationals, why would he? He's also non stop touring in ice shows and it was obvious at Nationals that he was tired
He dared take the risk of doing 4A at the SP of GP Final. What a brave young man! If he fell or popped, he could’ve gotten the last place at SP. IMO he handled the pressure very well, way better than skaters who’s much older than him.
I was confused how Ava’s technique score went from 71 to 65 when the only technical error was the 3 Lutz short of rotation before hitting close to the wall. But she didn’t fall. But also I wish they have gotten Starr to take Lindsey’s spot in 4CC. Poor gurl looked tired out/ and just trying to fight each jump.
The way Leonova looked at her coach in I think 2012 was very telling. And the way he gave her a "stay back" look was even more telling..
Dave, this blanket company needs to sponsor you. Best testimonial ever!
It is my favorite blanket. No lie.
Ok, I am sold. Where can we get that blanket?
Brands are missing a trick with Dave- I(and am sure others) would wholeheartedly trust his taste in endorsements 😅
Did he mention what brand and style it is? I am in the market for a blanket and now I want to know more after that promo!

Thanks for this! Always wonderful to watch
Is there a Stars on Ice this year? The website seems to be stuck on last year.
I was wondering that, too. The Canadian tour was announced already.
At my daugthers skating club they actually play Guess Who in their club room sometimes 😊 this is in Denmark btw.
Amazing
On the sexual assault topic, another key example is Sarah Abitbol (World pair medalist). She came out with the story a couple of years ago and published a book about it I believe.
About the same man?
Torgashev PCS lower than Yamamoto? I get that they bloat the components up for the highest ranked skaters but Yamamoto is just unremarkable relative to practically any other Japanese man (and countless other skaters). Also absurd that they are pumping his PCS for the 90th off-the-rack “Exogenesis”program.
Torgashev does not have the reputation that Yamamoto has, and that is compounded by him performing lower levels of difficulty. That is still important in international judging standards.
Yeah I had the same problem with this. I know reputation-final group-higher technical content blah blah blah but it's just wrong. Torgashev should be in the mid 80s. Or the others should be in the mid 70s.
Some abusive coaches are such an open secret, if SafeSport or USFS cared, they'd be gone. If any federation cared, a lot of the top coaches would be gone...
Okay but what are we gonna do about Deanna and max’s SBS jumps? Bc this isn’t it lol
I think Team USA celebrated too early since Russia will still appeal. I still think the IOC and ISU is still pro Russia. That's just me having no faith in this system anymore
Yes, but the only thing that they can appeal on is a technicality. I mean like, if evidence was allowed that shouldn't have been, or wasn't allowed that should have been, stuff like that. They can't just retry the whole thing looking for a different answer. There has to be a reason.
Value your comments on Deanna and about the toxic skating issues
Youth Olympics: Ashlie Slatter (ice dance bronze) is going to be a star!
2 hours long = to bed early.. thank you 🙌
Dave - my MOST FAVORITE part of these/your videos are when you talk about the skater's MUSIC! It is ALWAYS about the music. I believe music wins or loses a program. I think if and when the music matches the skater, the skater WINS. When the audience connects to the music and the music brings an EMOTIONAL RISE or reaction, the skater (and the audience) wins. So PLEASE keep stressing and screaming that it starts with the music. This is the example of going back and watching for example, Matt Savoie skating to the Mission (2006 Nationals and Olympics) and our friend, Paul Wylie skating to Henry V (1992 Silver) over and over and over again. (It is the match of the skater and their piece of music). Stop making little girls skate to music that is way to big for them (you know what I mean). And throw in a push to stop the cheesy vocals..... (that is just my bias). Could you please do a video JUST on music selections!!!!
Hey now, Dave... All those stylistically stretching for Kristi that you mentioned happened AFTER she turned professional. Mind you, go ahead and gush about the details of looking over her shoulder during Blue Danube, etc.
Still shrieking with laughter over the Snoozy Schizas comment. So ☠️ on oh my days lolol! Maybe it makes me a mean bad person but it’s the truth. You two are priceless.

Regarding Benoit, Dave you made your point clear in an earlier recap. I think it was the 2020 4CC recap. Boring skaters like Bradie go to Benoit, and that Bradie's red dress was reminiscent of Annie or Mrs Claus
I'm not a big fan of Benoit programs, but he choreographed the free dance for Demougeot/le Mercier, and it's a masterpiece. Especially when their skating does it absolute justice.
This could have been broken up into three videos and the algorithm would have thanked you for the extra content even though it woudl be the same amount of content no?. 4CC, USFS lawsuit, and Gracie's book review/ release.
I was today years old realizing my American neighbours could not watch the YOG livestreams on CZcams? and some ISU events as well? The only thing I wasn't able to see are US Nationals and Japan nationals because obviously local with their own broadcasting.
Yes, our streaming options for most figure skating events are limited because of a deal that NBC (a broadcasting company) has with Olympic Sports. So even if we do get to watch an event and not have to get a Peacock (streaming service) subscription, the coverage can be limited, and we only have a limited time for replays. For example, the US Nationals Gala was only posted (On Peacock only) earlier this week, I think. We didn't get to watch on the week of Nationals back in January.
It's extremely frustrating and probably one of the reasons why Figure Skating has declined in popularity in the U.S.. It's extremely inaccessible for casual fans and still difficult for the dedicated ones.
What is it with Jonathan's obsession with Piper and Paul? Of course their free dance tells more of a clear story, the story has been written for them. It's a well known novel. They just had to act out the novel, they didn't create something creative. And with it being a love story, I feel no love chemistry between them. Also Piper way over acts with her facial expressions, especially when she reaches for the judges.
Julie Marcotte’s best days are behind her, sadly
Crying with laughter at ‘Christmas tree leprechaun’ comment 😂
Clair!!
Yes Jonathan, Ava does have an oddness about her skating. Big jumper but I don't really enjoy watching her, and I really can't pinpoint why.
i don't know if this pinpoints it for you but for me something about her is like a gymnast-turned-figure skater
Hmmm, nvr thought about that.
The same way I feel like if football has to die to prevent boys from getting traumatic brain injuries, so be it, if skating has to die to prevent girls from getting raped, so be it. Not that I'm looking for either to happen, especially the skating one, but we have to have our priorities.
