unbox, set up test-bench for SafetyDave rearview camera system before install to car & caravan

    I have a 17 year old utility truck/car. Being so old, it does not have a rear-view camera. Recently, I placed an order for a custom-build caravan. The caravan will have a SafetyDave rear-view camera system to be installed by the caravan manufacturer. In preparation to tow the caravan with my truck/car, I bought the following items to install on my truck/car:
    - a SafetyDave SDAHD6 display monitor;
    - a SafetyDave Square Camera;
    - power & video cable-loom;
    - 7.5 metre extension video-cable; &
    - a WOZA SUZI-COIL adapter cable.
    It is important to set up a test-bench to assemble all the devices & cables for the car-caravan rear-view camera system. And be able to test & familiarise myself with the equipment before installation to the truck/car.
    Join me in this video, as I set up the test-bench & demonstrate operation of the camera system via the display monitor. If you have never done this before, & are intending to install a system on your vehicle by yourself; or you plan on buying such a system, this video may help you.

    Hello DIYhabitat, thanks for making the video. I have spent a lot of time trying to find a video which shows how the power wires are connected but I have yet to find one for the SD camera setup as you have shown. My curiosity is around the two red wire connections and how at least one of these wires can be connected directly to the cars fuse box (which is what a staff member at Safety Dave advised me to do). I am attempting to use an 'Add a Fuse' lead, which I have used previously for the connection of a two way radio. The two connectors on the camera wires (red) however are not compatible with the Add a Fuse cable connection point to hook into the fuse box. I can't seem to find suitable components to adapt to the connectors either. How did you connect your camera to a vehicle power source? BTW, SD advised that the supplied wiring is not designed to go directly to the car battery. Any advice you could offer would be great. Many thanks. D

      which exact model SD camera-monitor do U have, that U are attempting to install to car?
      Assuming U have the same 2-CH monitor like in my video.
      1) the monitor has a +ve red-cable with a male bullet-plug, & bullet-socket. One approach is for user to tap the bullet-plug into an existing in-car ignition-switched +12V cable. Then reconnect the existing in-car accessory input-cable (plug), into the SD monitor bullet-socket on the red-cable.
      Open up the black plastic casing on the red-cable, & check to see if there is a standard glass-fuse. If so, the the monitor incoming 12V power cable is fused.
      2) u probably won't find convenient existing +12V cable to connect using the bullet-connectors. Ensure you do not tap into any safety-affecting in-car +12V cable.
      Investigate using NARVA tap-connectors to tap a new wire to existing in-car switched +12V power. Then add a bullet-socket to that wire, so u can connect to the monitor's red-wire bullet-plug.
      WARNING CAUTION - If the existing wire you want to tap into, is not thick enough to support both its existing max current draw, + current draw from the monitor, that can lead to existing wire overheating, & become a fire hazard.
      Safer approach is to setup a new fused +ve cable connected directly to a relay that is triggered by an existing ignition-switched cable. This way, the monitor only powers up when car ignition is turned on.

      i did not install the system as i decided to have dual camera (wide & narrow) angle at caravan rear, instead of the single wide-angle camera. This means the rear-view monitor also needs to be changed from 2-channel to 3-channel. Hence, i returned everything to my caravan maker. We are waiting to see if in next 5mths, SafetyDave will release any higher-resolution products.
      I am only staying with SafetyDave products as this is the brand my caravan maker buys, supplies & supports. Otherwise, i would research & find better alternatives. SafetyDave website provides no tech specs for their camera & moniter products. This is not acceptable to me. The firmware on the SDAHD6 monitor is horrible.
      Must be better prducts with FHD res out there.
