    If I had one remark though, it's that by playing Neon White you're not 'pretending' to be a speedrunner, you are speedrunning. You don't have to spend thousands of hours to speedrun, the same way you don't have to be a professional soccer player to play soccer. Just trying to have a fast time on a game is speedrunning, even if you do it casually.

    Neon White owes a lot to Lovely Planet, a series of games I was absolutely addicted to, but Neon White definitely handles the approach so much better, it's 10/10 when it comes to roping people in for just one more try. Definitely a good choice for this year.

      Honestly while there are definitely some select cringy lines, the story overall hasn't been too bad from what I've played. Just tropey, not super serious, mainly the characters are just weirdos. Which isn't inherently bad, its enjoyable partially because watching people be weird can be amusing. And I enjoy how much the story takes the piss out of its version of Heaven.

    I had a similar experience with Door Kickers the year that came out. I couldn't bring myself to move on to the next mission unless I'd completed the previous one with at least a 2-star rating and no deaths. Then, halfway through the game, I unlocked the silencer attachment and suddenly every level had to be re-replayed, this time with perfect stealth. Then I unlocked the taser and learned that every level had a secret pacifist objective...
    Door Kickers was great.

    I want to push back slightly on one idea in the setup for the video. Speedrunning isn't about investing 4500 hours into a single run. Those are literally the 0.0001% of runners who are competing for milliseconds and for sub-pixel precision.
    Personally, I've done a handful of speedruns and not a single one was worth submitting. They weren't even real categories. Memeruns are a great introduction to the "idea" of speedrunning. Instead of the basic "how fast can you finish the game" which will inevitably pit you against people who have spent more time and have more skill at the game, which is super demoralizing when you're just learning about what speedrunning feels like, take it one step further. "How fast can I beat the game using only the shotgun" or "how fast can I beat the game without killing anything but bosses" or something like that. Do the theory crafting and run it a couple times.
    Maybe beat a survival horror game without crafting anything. Maybe beat a racing game without using the brakes or without using any boosts. Maybe beat a shooter using only melee attacks.
    Don't expect it to be perfect or even good. Just finish them. If at the end of a run, you say "man I want to do this section better" then you can later go practice that section or mechanic. This is where the big timesink of running is - either running entire categories until you get lucky and don't choke or practicing very specific tech until you can do it reliably.
    That is the pure essence of speedrunning. It is not a binary choice of "become the best or don't even try."

    • @ZandoFox
      @ZandoFox Před rokem +34

      For sure, it's something you can just do for fun and invest as much or as little time as you want.

    • @shards-of-glass-man
      @shards-of-glass-man Před rokem +89

      Also such a binary choice discounts glitch hunters and routers, who don't even necessarily place on leaderboards. Speedrunning is about community and cooperation, and having fun picking apart the games of your choice.

    • @EfrainMan
      @EfrainMan Před rokem +15

      Absolutely, your own personal speedrun competitions are as valid as trying to get on those worldwide leaderboards.

    Neon White is my Game of the Year for 2022. It is such a fun and well crafted game. I put in a total of 60 hours, first in my semi-casual playthrough that led into going for all the gifts and blue ace medals as I worked through the main story, then I discovered the red ace medals (after accidentally achieving one) and more than doubled my play time getting those on every level, then I went for the Heaven and Hell rushes, and White's Hell rush took me 3 days of attempts to complete (with a time of 54:01) which was one of the most satisfying achievements I've accomplished in gaming in a long time. I don't 100% many games but Neon White was just a constant blast to play and replay and I loved every minute of it.

    Exactly one year after this video was realeased, I finally started Neon White, and you basically explained everything great about it so far. I will not move on until I get at least top 100k. I'm always trying to beat myself. The levels are quick but not overly frustrating. Movement is fun and experimental since every gun gives us a different movement option that is fun to move around with.
    Though I think the best part is that there is zero load time when it comes to restarting a level. It gives little time to frustrate you because it's an easy to restart to try a new idea or try to perfect a manuver. I'm currently trying to get timeling down with bomb jumps on water, but I'm usually to early with jumping so I mess up a lot, but it's not too bad because there is no penalty for failures.

    A couple of thoughts after watching this short documentary covering the video.
    How easy is it to "reset" after each level, failure or not? When having a short >5 minute per level basis, the ability to reset is a very important feature towards speedrunning. It is why certain games get hated a lot or even why intro cutscenes are sometimes removed altogether in some situations. The standout one in this area is Super Mario Maker where manually resetting is more efficient than automatic letting it rest which still saps away your time at doing nothing.
    Leaderboards is generally not a thing that you want to base a game around. Having games be around a competitive scene can actually hurt the game's reputation.
    How "unique" are the levels? Are there reasons why a person might choose to selectively run only one level over the rest? This reasoning pushes someone to only run one game / level over many others even if they know they aren't the best of the best or knowing RNG is in the way.
    How much actual content and variety is there? It seems like you aren't showing all of it off in this video but at the same time it seems very bland based on what its showing off.
    Glad to see Patrick's Parabox getting an honorable mention! Haven't touched that game personally but man watching Aliensrock play it was a joy to watch how the game unfold itself.

    • @Dok179
      @Dok179 Před rokem +1

      Reset is one button press, takes about 2 seconds
      The game's marketing was literally "from freaks, to freaks". I don't think they're concerned about appealing to the masses. Besides, it's a game about speedrunning. Speedruns and leaderboards go hand in hand.
      Each level is unique, most of them have a specific theme or type of challenge the level is focused around. That said, there is not a lot of mechanics and the levels are short, so they're not drastically different.
      There is ~100 levels and 3 bosses. Visual variety was good enough for me.
      Hope that cover everything.

    Playing through Neon White for my first time, this is one of those games that you can tell what the focus area was (plenty of negative reviews of Neon White cite the writing as... ridiculous at best and I agree with that notion but it's not dragging my experience down), and they did a really good job making that focus area thoroughly-polished
    I typically run golds first then go back after finishing a mission to get all its aces and gifts (which the bonus levels tied to those gifts are a blast too!)
    Also while they aren't FPSes, that initial "real-time combat deck-builder" concept has worked before - One Step from Eden and its predecessor/inspiration, Mega Man Battle Network, handle blending the real-time fighting with the deck-building really well, there's loads of options and synergies at your disposal (Battle Network can be a bit slow to get to the broad scope of customization especially when every card/chip has a code assigned to it that you have to match with other chips to use more varieties of between opportunities to draw new chips for use) so there's always other setups/strats to try your hand at if one isn't sticking

    Super Mario Maker 2 captures the speedrunning feeling pretty well with its "Ninji" speedruns. Basically, Nintendo releases a level and for ~2 weeks, players get to race and optimize on it while competing on a global leaderboard. Surveying the level, developing your own routes, and then searching what routes and tricks the best streamers and CZcamsrs uses is really fun and captures the fun speedrunning feeling. Plus, the fact that the winners are decided and medals are given out after ~2 weeks makes it much more approachable unlike games like SM64 where runners have been optimizing for years.

    I'm kind of surprised I don't see Immortality at least mentioned here. For me, it was the most innovative game design I've seen this year - I've never seen a game where a hidden game-mechanic is the plot twist, and once you stumble upon it the tone of the game immediately changes. Discovering it was one of the best aha moment this year, and my favourite piece of game design. Especially since it was always there.
    I've also really liked how they end the game before you've seen all of the clips - watching all of the scenes from 3 movies at once and in random order was suprisingly interresting experience, and I'm glad I did not try to continue after the credits roll and 100%, since I think the experience is a lot more memorable, though-provoking and interresting when you don't have the closure - which I think was also a deliberate design choice.

    Neon White was an amazing surprise for me. I don't tend to like first person games, platformers, or speed running focused titles. Yet the aesthetic, music, style, even the dialogue, interested me. So I picked it up on my Switch after playing a few levels on my brother's copy... Now, nearly 70 hours later, I got every red medal in the game, and am improving my times steadily each time I go back to the beginning to do it all again. I even cracked the top 30 of the global leaderboards, yet I'm craving more and am gunning for the top 20.
    This game did something awesome, it's just the right mix of everything that nailed a fun, addicting game that I happily consider my GOTY for 2022. I love it dearly!
