I am thoroughly enjoying this project. Tuning it seems difficult!
Oh hi
Can you make it SMARTER???
Check how the trebuchet is moving and wiggling when it just has fired. So it is massively inefficient! With the correct tweaking, I suppose much more impressive results are possible. It is already impressive and fun to watch...
team up
Old colin who cared for details and engineering the shit out of build, would never be satisfied with this improvised abomination of trebuchet. But hey sponsorship is sponsorship.
Fixing bad release with chains.... facepalm. Best result because of accidental failure. This build is miles away from quality of his builds from past.
Having Tom Stantons trebuchet on recommended right here makes me cringe seeing this video.

It's the square corners that are killing it. You need to toss something more "round" so it releases from the sling easier.
Yeah exactly
Yeah like a boulder or a steel ball although that would be a bit more difficult to get i think

Aren’t trebuchets supposed to move a little? Or else I think it will actually lurch up.
@@oscarwang7227 trebuchets are supposed to not move when ready to fire
@@mrblackfyre2071 ok
@@oscarwang7227 it depends on the type this isn’t suppose to move
It's supposed to move freely, do your math! (If you dropped out of school, build a small one and test it, or youtube it!)
It’s a matter of weight ratios, arm length and release angle. The weight should be 275:1 counter weight vs projectile. Arm length should be 5:1 around the axle. You want the projectile to launch the exact moment the launch arm and sling are perpendicular to the ground. This should allow you to optimize the efficiency of the trebuchet.
sling length and stall postion of the weight also matter.
When I made a much smaller trebuchet for my high school woodshop, I found that the pin angled up and not down gets better distance and power, cuz you’re trying to release it the moment the trebuchet stalls the swing arm so you don’t waste potential energy.
Also, try getting a rubber mat as the sling, with large and robust surfaces they will grip the rubber well when it compresses the sling to pull it
This needs to be upvoted more
that, combined with a shorter (faster) sling should get you pretty close to an ideal release.
And he should block the tires!! Cause each time you shot, trebuchet goes towards and loose a all bunch of energy.
Ha, after reading some comments below, moving trebuchet sime to get better. I take back what I said 😅

I feel like round projectiles would clear the sling and have far less resistance. You need to try some pumpkins and bowling balls.

Sling is too long! Projectiles will fly MILES with a shorter sling, it goes slack before the arm is upright
the pin should also be slightly bent forward, not back.
Definitely this, slings are the most difficult part to get right on trebuchets and this one is too long. I’m sure with the size of this trebuchet once the sling is just perfect it’ll launch some insane distances.

Hi Colin!
Congratulations on this massive build! 2 thoughts which might resolve/improve your "bag issues":
1) try throwing more spherical projectiles, as i'm afraid that the corners of your square metallic box might by too agressive for the bag...?
2) i've seen you (sometimes?) placed the 2 strings of the bag on the each side of the projectile and i think that might twist your release. I'ld recommend placing the fixed string on top of the projectile and the loose one under it. Thus the bag will already be alined with it's release's plan and hopefully that will make it smoother.
Cheers & good luck for next shots!

Brings back memories of when me and a few mates built one after being inspired by AoE like 20 years ago. We cobbled together a 12ft one from some spare bits and bobs on my family's farm - mostly permapine logs and coach screws. Counterweight was a 50kg block of concrete. Axle was a big bolt from a salvage yard lubricated with a bunch of grease. It wasn't exactly built with precision, but we played around with the slip pin angle and sling and got it to throw fruit in a rather consistent manner.

To help put more power into each swing, chock the wheels so all energy has to be transferred into the object and not into rocking the trebuchet
Love the build mate.
From what I recall of testing people have done, wheels actually improve the efficiency of trebuchets usually, since it let's the trebuchet essentially self correct to optimize the fall path of the weight, so more of the energy from it is transferred into the arm of the trebuchet, rather than into rocking the frame back and forth as the weight rotates around the axle at the top. Basically you want the weight to fall as straight down as possible, and being mounted on wheels means the momentum slides the whole chassis just a bit more in line with that (back when the weight is high, and forward when the weight is low), rather than having the chassis try and fight it to hold its position. Trebuchets are cool!

Hi Colin,
I think you should anchor it down as well. I think you are losing quite a bit of energy when it moves itself forwards. If you anchor it well by blocking the wheels or something, that energy that was moving the whole structure would then be going instead into the projectile.
Cant wait to see the next test
Ttebuches were used to smash rooves and horizontal fortifications, as the projectile was coming with a vertical trajectory; for vertical walls catapults were used, which launched stuff at a more steep angle, to hit more perpendicularly to the target possible.
So nobody is gonna talk about the skillful drone guy who took those sick scenes
