The Underrated 1st Ballot Hall Of Famer

- Throughout Eddie Murray's 21-year career, he was insanely consistent. 30 home run, 100 rbi seasons were an absolute guarantee for him. Resulting in a career with 500 home runs and 3,000 hits with only Hank Aaron and Willie Mays doing so before him. But with this, despite being a 1st ballot hall of fame, Murray still fell a little under the radar. In this video, we look at his career and why he was underrated.

500 / 3000. That is an ELITE group.....underrated isnt a good enough word to describe how under appreciated Eddie Murray is all-time. He had an Aaron like consistency.
Rafael Palmeiro had this and was ran out of the league
NO ONE on Baltimore under-rates Eddie Murray. A local brewery even named a beer after him called Steady Eddie
They sell it at the yard
Absolutely. Bill James (I hate to admit) said it best about Murray. His best year was every year.
I agree not a lot of people talk about Eddie Murray. He’s definitely one of underrated hall of famer. 500 home runs and 3000 hits is incredible
Eddie Murray helped his teams to win a lot of ballgames during his career. In that time Murray compiled 500 homers and 3000 hits and he did it before the steroid era when 500 homers was still a lot. His managers could pencil him in the middle of the lineup every night for 20 years. Not only are his stats Hall of Fame worthy, but playing a professional sport for 20 years at a high level is also Hall worthy.
Steady Eddie Murray, one of the most consistent, yet dominate, position players of all time
Ripken saying Murray taught him his work ethic was a hell of a comment.
I remember back in the 80's, he was one of the most consistent players of his peers. Awesome ballplayer
I think that the only reason Eddie Murray is called "underrated" is because he never had a good relationship with the press. So the press never wrote much good about him outside of mentioning his contributions to that night's game. He never received much praise during his career.
The man was one of the top 5 hitters of his time, and arguably the best all around switch hitter of his time!
I think he is arguably the second-best switch hitter ever, behind only Mantle.
@@JayLandon64It’s close between the two no doubt.
@@JayLandon64 as much as I hate the guy... Pete Rose .. his name has to be mentioned if you're just looking at what he did on the field.. There's an argument to be made for him as well.
But I still say Rose should not get in the Hall of Fame while he's still alive... and if he gets in it should be well after Shoeless Joe Jackson is enshrined!
Eddie Murray is one of the greatest all time, all around baseball players ever.
When he came back to the Orioles in 1996 and hit #500 on the anniversary of Cal Ripken becoming the consecutive game leader that was special
He also the reason why Ripken is the all-time leader in consecutive games.
@@mastermace7770as a True Mets Fan. Steady Eddie Murray is a Legitimate 1st Ballot Hall oF Famer
I remember watching him play in the early 1990's, with my first thought was that he was just okay. Nothing flashy, no real emotion or him doing something that stands out from my memory. Murray's consistency is what got him in the HOF.
And that's why players hate fans
@@GregLucas-pv8nm He missed Murray's prime, he probably feels the same way about Don Mattingly
Fans judge players based on how good they are right now, not how good they used to be
By comparison, Mantle had 500 home runs playing in a stadium Homer friendly to a pull switch hitter, only about 2600 hits, but no one doubted his HOF credentials. Murray definitely belongs. And I'm a Red Sox fan.
@@MichaelGibbons-uk2mc No one is saying that Murray doesn't belong but he wasn't Mantle LOL
Think about this. The year Maris hit 61 HR, Mantle usually batted 3rd, ahead of him. As I recall, Mantle still had a league leading number of intentional walks, IBB on the charts. I think it was about 14 or 15. As we say in Massachusetts, that's f**** wicked.
Despite me being a Pirates fan and not an Orioles fan, I've always had a lot of respect and admiration for Eddie Murray. I admired him even much more when he was selected for the Hall Of Fame and made a statement about how baseball is a sport where people have to think and that the game of baseball will survive and thrive as long as people are willing to think. 👍⚾
Lifelong Orioles fan. Eddie Murray was never underrated among our fanbase, that I know of. Hell, I started switch-hitting after watching Murray at-bat lol.
Eddie Murray was a great player. He was still great when he played for the Dodgers near the end of his career. One of the top switch-hitters of all time.
He was even with the indians
I think he is arguably the 2nd best switch hitter ever, behind only Mantle, and it is close between them.
Old Pirate fan and current Rangers fan here. Plenty old enough to remember Murray when he played, and even then I thought he was underrated. An rbi machine.
Long time Yankee fan here.Think i can speak for a lot of others. We dreaded seeing Steady Eddie come to the plate with runners on.thst guy was a tough out...darn fine fielder too
Grew up near the stadium and he would allay give us baseballs and sign our gloves or bats. Loved those late70’s early 80’s birds.
I dig the players like Murray. Well done.
Most fans like 1st ballot fall of famers too
Great video, but am I only one that noticed Eddie wasn’t a switch hitter until he was in AA ball? His minor league card said bats right and then he started switch hitting after that. I’m surprised that wasn’t mentioned considering he’s one of the greatest switch hitters of all time and didn’t start actually switch hitting until he was 20
Correct started in aa ball
Being a Mets fan growing up as a kid, I remember "Steady Eddie" of the late 70's and 80's. He was a force man, a
phenomenal player. I don't know if he was underrated but I do know I used to constantly ask myself back in the day as to why couldn't the Mets have a player like this guy at that time? He was that good! 500 homers/3000 hits, nothing to sneeze at.
Eddie Murray wasn’t a big home runner hitter like someone who will hit 40 or 50 hits, he was just a consistent home run hitter. Basically average about 25 home runs.
Not to mention he was a switch hitter and had power from both sides of the plate. The only other player similar was Mickey Mantle.
@@Rockhound6165 Murray was a great player and a easy choice for the Hall of Fame but Mantle, no.
I have fond memories of Murray’s twilight in Cleveland.
He suffers from the same issue Hank Aaron did, his greatness was in his consistency but he never went truly nuclear in a single season. That quiet greatness is easy to forget.
I mentioned on another comment. He remind me of frank gore and tim brown in nfl, all time greats, but never the best , during their careers
@@kenw2225in my Humble Opinion. Earning a Championship in the 4 Major Sports isn't " an End all b All " For a Solid Player. For me. Having a Very Consistent Sports Career is More Valid in my 👀's
I have been an O's fan since 1980. Eddie was the consumate model of consistency. One would scratch their head at this video looking at his cumulative numbers, but you are actually right, in my book anyway, that Eddie was undervalued, and there are two main reaskns in my opinion:
First is, as you had stated, was he put up solid and consistent numbers year after year, so no 50 HR seasons, no .390 average, and no record breaking performances. Just "Steady" Eddie as he was nicknaked in Baltimore (Chuck Thompson called him this, and Brooks too (Brooks Robinson & Chuck Thompson were the television team when I was a 12 year old in the summer of 1983), and he was the very definition of steady, not flashy (not a 21st century player for certain), but carried himself with a quiet humility that defined the "Orioles Way."
The second reason:
One EXPECTED Eddie to hit 25-30, knock in 90-110 runs, and hit between .285 & .310, and he suceeded, YEAR AFTER YEAR, nothing spectacular in the minds of others, so he did not receive serious consideration simply because he was SUPPOSED to perform, and boy did he. Eddie quietly hit 504 HR with 3000 plus hits, THAT is a feat worthy of accolades, and Cooperstown was a lock.
I was devastated when he was traded, and this trade took away my innocence (that baseball IS a business FIRST, and that feel good shows with happy endings of the era were a mirage, much like Eddie being an Oriole for life).
Thank you for the video, and for playing the highlight reel of my chidhood into my teens.
Let's Go O's
Let's Go O's
Let's Go O's
Fond memories of that '83 season.
The fact that he only got 85.1% is insane. Murray should’ve easily been in the 90% or higher range
Murray didn't coddle to the media which hurt him when it came to MVP voting and even HOF voting. He did his talking on the field and was a model of consistency his whole career. He was just the 3rd player at the time with 500 hrs and 3000 hits but if you look at the players who followed that accomplished the same, only Albert Pujols was never linked to performance enhancing drugs.
Eddie was awesome.
I always wanted the Cubs to get him, but we had Mark Grace & he gave no reason to replace him.
My parents were at the game he hit number 500 and my dad never let me forget it but in the mean time never let me forget who this absolute unit was. O’s legend and definitely in the mustache HoF
I was born in 1978. As a lifelong baseball, I never had a problem with his election to the HOF. But after watching this video, I'm actually impressed. He had an incredible career. Thank you for this video
You are a lifelong baseball? Wow, what's that like? Are there a lot of ups and downs?
Have you been a Wilson or Rawlings baseball all of your life?
Murray reminded me a bit of Fred Lynn. Granted, Lynn’s career couldn’t possibly match Eddie’s but they both had such a graceful, effortless way of moving.
Lynn didn't have Murray's consistency but he had two monster seasons
One reason he is often forgotten (IMHO) is because he's so quiet. I watched him (from afar) for his whole career. I have no idea what his voice sounds like?! The squeaky wheel gets the grease!
Eddie Murray rocked. The King of Sacrifice Flies.
I love your content man. Keep up the great work!
Eddie Murray was one of the true HoF players of all time. He could do it all, and won a ring with the O’s.
Eddie greatest sin, and why he is “underrated” today, was that he was very quiet with the Media…and in baseball, that has always been the greatest sin for a talented player…
Fun video! I really enjoyed it. Murray is definitely one of the best switch hitters of all time
One my favorite players.
Yes. Definitely in the mix for GOAT switch hitter.
Third after Mantle and Chipper IMO.
He was a great player but Mantle was a generational great
My 2nd favorite player behind Mike Schmidt. I still have his rookie card.
Eddie was a solid ball player. One of my favorite non Red Sox players. Definitely first ballot.
Any one who doesn't appreciate Murray, who gave 20 years of excellence, doesn't understand the value such a guy gives to a team. Everyone's dazzled by a spectacular season or two, but a turtle is better than a hare.
I grew up in the 80's and was a huge Bball fan and I personally didn't appreciate the kind of player that he was. Especially considering that it was before roids, juiced balls (except 87 of course) and nearly every park being a bamm box where consistent power and run production wasn't easy to come by.
I remember him from the Late 70s to the Mid 90s.
First all-time and sacrifice flies 4th all-time and grand slams (with two ped players above him)
Murray was always clutch
Eddie himself didn't talk about Eddie. Low key, liw maintenance, high consistent production. Lifetime Yankees fan. WE never underated him!
I remember Eddie Murray. He would hurt the Sox consistently.
Truly mis understood an the ultimate underrated player. Tremendous RBI Machine
Fantastic video of one my favorite players. You should do Frank Robinson as well.
Career high RBIs with the bases loaded might be the most telling statistic of his career
Going from a all purpose pitcher friendly park, to a modern hitters park shows how important those can be.
It was said he led the league in average but not win the batting title?.That has me confused..How is that possible?
He's the best first baseman ever
We talked about Murray plenty when he played. If you watched TWIB you knew what he was doing in those days . The pitchers sure didn't underrate him
In 1990, Murray's .330 average was the highest among all the MLB players but NOT in the (National) League. That went to McGee's .335. Since McGee switched leagues his personal overall average dropped to .324 and Murray's .330 (and also George Brett's .329) ended up topping him. McGee and Brett took home silverware but the guy with the highest overall average didn't. 🙁⚾
To be honest I thought this video would be about Frank Robinson who was an absolute stud
Eddie Murray was a little under the radar because he did not have high peak value, he was a compiler
Rate stats and peak value wise he is much closer to Will Clark than he was to Frank Robinson or Mike Schmidt
Dave Winfield (another 1st ballot Hall of Fame player) is a fair comparison
First base is a hard place to accumulate WAR, and doesn't do justice to the greatness of the hitter
Even Ted Williams named him one of the best he’d ever seen
Eddie is one of the most underrated players in MLB history. How can you be underrated with 3k hits and 500 homers? No idea
Honestly the modern player I compare Eddie to the most is probably Joey Votto, idk they just remind me of each other
Votto prob is comparable. I was thinking bonds in Pittsburgh
@@kenw2225 Votto is another slam dunk first ballot Hall of Famer
I REMEMBER DICK YOUNG THAT RACIST SPORTS WRITER WROTE VERY BAD THINGS ABOUT EDDIE MURRAY EARLY IN HIS CAREER BECAUSE EDDIE NEVER TRUSTED THE PRESS AND MY HERO SILENT GEORGE HENDRICK NEVER SPOKE TO THE MEDIA IN HIS 19 YEAR CAREER AND AT SHEA STADIUM IN 1983 WHILE PLAYING FOR THE ST LOUIS CARDINALS BEFORE A NIGHT GAME AGAINST THE METS HENDRICK SPOKE TO ME AND MY OLDEST BROTHER FOR 1 HOUR AND THOSE PRESS GUYS WERE MAD AS HELL
My favorite. Oriole of alltime!
We know that playoff teams or close to playoff teams players get the preference for MVP back in the old days when two teams made the playoffs. In 1983 Murray’s numbers weren’t as good as Ripken… well, offensively they were pretty similar but the voters are going to give the nod to a guy playing shortstop with numbers as good as yours.
The press did not like Murray, he had to hit 3000/500 to make sure they voted him first ballot
Not bad for probably the 3rd best switch hitter ever
Hoping Zack Hample makes the hall of Fame.
Steady Eddie
👍🏼
Imagine rolling up to your high school baseball game after failing an Algebra 2 exam and getting into an argument with your girlfriend only to see you’re playing Eddie Murray and Ozzie Smith on the other team.
Could you explicate this?🤔😕
3000+ hits
504 Hrs
As a Switch Hitter!!
Just Sayin
Hes like the frank gore of nfl rb, or tim brown of wide receiver. All time great, great longevity, but never really the best during any year of career.
Watch a video speaking about the best switch hitters of all time. Did not have a problem with no.1. Murray not @ least the second best? Not right
Murray was the AL's best player from 1980-85, never got an MVP (relievers getting mvp is ridiculous). Ask opponents who the most feared hitter in the league was during that time. 1990 season with LA also on par with 1980-85
Underrated? During his prime, Eddie Murray was one of the most dangerous offensive players I've ever seen
Underrated or ripped off? Lost 125+ games to 2 strikes & that deprived him of his 2000th rbi & obviously more hits & homers. Great consistent player.
In what world are you saying Eddie Murray was underrated?
He doesn't get his merits because of his refusal to speak to the media, unfortunately, he didn't know how to play that part of the game. 😵💫
THE GREATEST POWER TRIO:
EDDIE MURRAY
MIKE BODDICKER
CAL RIPKEN JR
Say “what” again
Did you say 63hrs ?? Lol
Umm Murray did clean...
He never hit more than 33 homers in one season.
So, he averaged 25 for 20 years: much more value to a team than a Maris or Foster that has a couple of big years. You don't understand baseball
@@nicholasschroeder3678 I just stated an interesting fact about the guy’s career and you jump the gun with a straw man argument. Take a chill pill.
Geeead, turn off the stupid background noise.
Never liked him ave player ave power no personality just ave good player for 20 years look at the peak 4-8 years of hof players lol
Eddie got done wrong . As a yankee fan sure i disliked him , Switchhitter like the Mick and he was greater to me.At 66 even then racial was part of it ,back then as a young guy . I knew it and tuff .Yanks all the way .Later and even then I knew . Willie Mays was it and Mantle . Eddie and that guy for Atlanta , Hey kid of the 60's . RACIST thats all Didn't like Henry Aaron cause of Say-Hey Kid . Not sure where race fits in that .
Yes , he is over looked.
Definitely over looked
👎👎👎
Murray was very good for a long time. His stats speaks for itself. Cal Ripken & had similar stats....i think he actually played more games than Cal. Eddie wasn't underated......he wasn't gregarious
Steadie Eddie! .. I guess no one appreciates steadiness.. or was he just not good enough.!! Haha
