    The OSS psychological profile of Hitler described him thus:
    "His primary rules were: never allow the public to cool off; never admit a fault or wrong; never concede that there may be some good in your enemy; never leave room for alternatives; never accept blame; concentrate on one enemy at a time and blame him for everything that goes wrong; people will believe a big lie sooner than a little one; and if you repeat it frequently enough people will sooner or later believe it."
    Sound familiar?

    I was once told I was teaching crt because my 11th graders studied a draft of the declaration of independence and its final draft.
    Specifically, we were exploring why the language about slavery was removed. When I talked about this lesson to a group of adults critical of what they THINK is CRT (and have no connection to my classroom or school), i was called a LIAR for teaching the straight facts of history. The original draft condemned slavery, but had to drop that clause to gain the support of two southern colonies who would have sided with the British otherwise. We barely won the Revolution. Without the essential backing of those two colonies, there's no way we would have won it. I didn't say it was right or wrong, but asked students to consider being stuck between a rock and a hard place having to make that call about the Declaration.
    As a white person, I don't feel shame at history. Instead, I study it, try to learn from it, and then try to do better by the people in my life than our forefathers did.

    • @ckandrew
      @ckandrew Před 2 lety

      @@ultramurray I might not have said "white" specifically, although, personally, I'm inclined to agree with you. In general, humans as a species are pretty awful to one another, and they're pretty awful to other species, as well. It makes me sad, but also reminds me to try to be better. Mark Twain called humans the lowest animal, and I can't disagree.
      Maybe a statement like "industrialized, modern humans" might be less controversial and representative of the threats posed to the Earth as a whole. At the same time, however, the industrial revolution was led by white men in three piece suits...so in terms of stem and sustainability, your statement seems spot on.
      If you enjoy reading, check out the book Technics and Civilization (1938) by Lewis Mumford. Plot Twist: it's one of the best books I've ever read. With your focus, it might be something that blows your mind, as well.

    I grew up in the city in Canada where the escaped slaves ended up. Harriet Tubman's church is an historical site. William Hamilton Merritt (builder of the Welland Canal) gave the formerly enslaved homes to live in, in a neighborhood with everyone else, not a slum. When the school on that street needed to be rebuild, it was named after Harriet Tubman and a statue was built there.. Of course we have racists in Canada. People live here. But, just a few months ago a bust of Ms. Tubman was vandalized. That church was there before Ms. Tubman came to town and no one has ever bothered it in well over a 150 years, not until Trump got into office. Our municipal elections have no party affiliations. You run as yourself, not a Liberal, Conservative or NDP (a whole party of Bernie Sanders types). The last election saw candidates homes and vehicles vandalized if they were considered "too Liberal'. This has never happened before, not until Trump.
    Now we have Confederate, Nazi, QAnon and Trump flags flying in Ottawa and at border crossings. About 89% of Canadians are vaccinated and most of us just want to do whatever we have to do to get through this pandemic. We don't want to die. There have been a few protests because, again, people live here. Someone got donor lists on the GoFundMe type pages. Guess what? About 55% of the donors are AMERICAN and a large number of those are Trump supporters. Now it's spreading, all over the world. Does that remind you of anything that was happening, say about 80-90 years ago? I know, because everyone in Ontario had to take a history course in grade 10 and it covered both world wars. Maybe that's why the far right doesn't want history taught. They don't want anyone to see it coming.
    You people have a big problem brewing and it's more than a giant orange oaf who refuses to admit that he lost an election. Biden could take some lessons from Trudeau. He recognized this as an insurrection and he's shutting it down. They have identified the protestors. Their bank accounts and credit cards are frozen and they can't get any money from the fundraisers. Drivers licenses and insurance are suspended. Anyone helping them faces the same. Too harsh? These huge trucks can easily be weaponized just like the planes were on 9/11. We haven't ever had to invoke the Emergencies Act - essentially what you would call Marshall Law, since, you guessed it, Trump was put in office.
    I really enjoy your podcast and I apologize for using it in this way. I just realized that many of your former colleagues are probably here. They probably don't even realize that Fox News and Trump's supporters tried to take over our country. No one pays attention to us. Until about 25 years ago, Americans were still crossing the border in Niagara Falls with snow skis on their roof racks in July and were seriously confused because there wasn't any snow or igloos (I messed with them, Al. You would have been proud of me) You people need a wakeup call before we BOTH lose our countries. We're gone 5 minutes after you are. And watch out for the next protest. They're going to be using Mack Trucks, not baseball bats and pitch forks.
