IT ALMOST BURNED MY HOUSE DOWN! - Jackson Electron Tube Tester Repair & Restoration

- Like the title says...this Jackson Model 49 Customatic Tube Tester nearly caught my house on fire. Or maybe it did catch it on fire, and now I'm deceased and dreaming of making this video of the restoration and repair. Maybe you're all figments of my past life imagination. Maybe I've become an electron and I'm now trapped inside this tester forever. Going round and round the circuit, aimlessly and yet with purpose.

This video is dedicated to my 6-year-old Ivy Sue, who created the colorful sculptures you see on my bench. My little artist.
A magnet in a ziploc bag would have cleaned those metal filings up in a second
Brad, I was DRUNK and passed out like an idiot with a 12 volt water heater in a cup heating up coffee water. Woke up smelling smoke....NO FUSE IN IT....Chinese weapon.....plastic SINK in the bathroom was ON FIRE! My sister doesn`t know yet. I keep the hole covered with shit. Trying to move but now the phone company refuses to connect phone and internet service because it`s a CAMPER! I`m on disability and have to have contact with doctors and a way to order food and do banking. I can`t take much more. I`m ready to leave the planet. So tired of the abuse from people and the nightmare of just trying to live. Nothing but mental torture here.
Congratulations! You have solved the puzzle.
You win a cee-gar! I was waiting to see if your rig had a cathode leak test function, which it does. Your meter also has 2 scales, and the one that matters on the H K test is the one at the bottom.
I have an Eico 667, and it's about the same vintage as yours.
It's laid out a little different, but the functions appear to be identical. One of the things that my paperwork says is when you do the leak test, if the meter reads below 500k ohms, DO NOT DO THE FINAL TEST. They tell you that you'll short out the transformer and the meter. If the filament is leaking through the cathode to ground, it'll pull too much current through the filament winding, and the current will also be too much for the meter.
Both will go up in smoke and you'll have yourself a door stop.
Go back and take another look at the manual and see if they give you the same warning with yours. You did a nice job trouble shooting this beast and it'd be a shame to smoke it out, so double checking what they say about it would be a good idea.
So much talent, you must encourage her to pursue art
Brad, as a retired, old school, degreed electronics tech I can’t tell you enough how I enjoy your videos. I appreciate your troubleshooting approach and your video presentations. I don’t give compliments lightly. Got my degree in 1982, worked in the computer industry doing component level repairs when graphic workstation mini computers were the size of two drawer filing cabinets. The advent of the Motorola 68000 processor put an end to that company (Perq Systems) so I went into teaching for a few years. My students were landing jobs in industry making twice what I was so I went into industry as an instrumentation & controls engineering tech. The reason I went through all this boring crap is “I’ve been there and done that”. I’m retired, 67 years old, battling cancer, missing the industry, and grateful to be alive. Again, I enjoy your videos more than you will ever understand. Keep up the good work, never give up, and God Bless.
Defiantly a dying breed. I worked in electronics for 25yrs. now a shaky, blind alcoholic. lol It's frustrating i can't solder good anymore. I'm always on the lookout for somebody to show [ train ]. I found one kid schooled, works in it and likes digging into amps i guess. Could read schematics. Cool. But really didn't understand electronics. We were biasing my Marshall and didn't understand it's a [current] thing not the negative voltage on the schematic.. I've run into others, but it's too deep for them. It's like an MD without that salary. My son turned into a commercial banker, good idea. Back to the bias thing i think the manufactures specify a voltage for the production floor cause there using the same tubes and they don't train them or take to much time setting the idle current. But probably spent 6 weeks showing them how to use a volt meter. And the dangers of tube amps.
🙏
Imagine my surprise when I clicked on the live, I see the tester I sent, I thought it was long gone. It was in a fridge on an open porch of a rental, I knew the musician that moved away and left it. I opened it up to see an eighth of an inch of rust dust in the bottom , evidently it did get rained on and evaporated out. I painted the case and now regret doing that. I thought it was to cool to dump so I sent it to you. Been watching a long time and thought if anybody can fix it you have the tenacity! The guy also left an old stand alone in house eight track player in wood case, it works, Added treat I have a ton of eight tracks! Sorry about the long comment.
Thank you so much once again for sending it, Larry. I know it's been a long time since you sent this, so sorry for the wait on getting to see it restored. Better late than never, eh!? You did no harm in painting that case. Im sure it needed it.
Makes me think of when I was a kid. My dad was a mechanic but had no electronics understanding. When our TV started acting up, I would pull all the tubes and we went down to the Rexall drugstore where they had a tube tester with a case below with new tubes. He taught me how to work on cars and I tried to show him about electronics. My love of electronics led me to an Air Force stent and 42 more years in electronics.
Better than Saturday morning cartoons 40 years ago. thanks Brad always teaching something new to the peeps
For a tinkering fool like me,all of your content is cool, granted I'm a guitar and amp affectionate, but I like all fix it videos, gives us a sense of community to have the same political views, which is just as important to me today, as the rest of your content, been following since day one, because you haven't changed Brad.
I have a really old Eico model 666, I was getting out of electronics repair for various health reasons and a friend of mine is an amp tech. So I gave him (free) my Hitachi dual trace oscilloscope because I wasn't going to use it. He gave me this old tube tester so I can still test my own tubes. That was like 25 years ago, I still have it, it still works lol. It's in absolutely mint condition with the manual and everything. Great little tester.
Bravo! For turning a piece of junk into a working tester. I bought a supposedly working Hickok TV-3 that was junk, returned it for a refund, and have now designed and halfway built my own tester!
Saturday with Brad! Alright alright alright!
Back in the late 1980's I was into Commodore computers. One day I was at a hardware store and the manager knew I was into those machines, he wanted a way to put his billing on his C=128. So I sat down with mine and worked out a basic program that allowed his computer to trace all charges, print out bills, subtract payment, print out bills and all sorts of fun things. I gave him the software to try, a few days later he asked me to stop by, now since I was just doing computer programing to learn, I had given him the software. He was so happy he gave me a new Dremel with the full kit of accessories. I bet I probably used the Dremel about as much as he did the computer. I still have the Dremel and used it from time to time. I used to be a gun smith and used the hell out of the Dremel working on guns. Now days I do radios and such, so not so much.
LOOOOOVE these Tube Tester Videos!
This tube tester video loves you back!
This was awesome Brad, keep the repair videos coming my friend!
Great to watch how you systematically work through the troubleshooting process. As usual I pick up a tip or two from your videos. Thanks for sharing them.
Yep I agree Brad, in the last week I can see your videos everywhere whereas the last year none to be seen. Keep up the good work!
Excellent video, enjoyed every minute. Thanks for sharing the complete process!
That was something I will never have a need to know about. Not sure why I was so interested in it. Weird. I guess I just like old stuff. And seeing how people were so creative back then. idk. Glad you were able to get it sorted out. And never judge a power supply by it's cover!
I like the way you work through things in real time, and share the thought process.
Glad you're back Brad ...Fran lab was having the same problem and it's got her all discouraged..
Sorry to hear that about Fran. She has some good content.
Thanks Brad! Great vid as usual 😁
Aaarghh! Brad! The meter goes full scale at a few milliamps. You test these old meters with your multimeter on the ohms scale or diode check scale. You can't imagine the horror I experienced watching you hit the meter with a power supply. Hahahaha!!! I'd love to get hold of an old tube tester like this one to restore.
It's fun to watch your skills grow in hooking your videos up with thumbnails and titles that have some 'push'. Some would call it "clickbait", but given it's how the game is played, might as well play it well!
Midwest surplus electronics in Dayton Ohio still has many of the part for that unit .
thanks for the vid brad, always great
Glad you enjoyed it
Interesting I have been subscribed for years but this is the first video off yours I have seen for a long while.
That tube tester has 60’s Telecaster pickup switch knobs! I missed your channel because of CZcams’s crap, and when you don’t see it you tend to forget about it.
It's been awhile since I've watched your channel. I forgot how much I enjoy watching. And it's because you leave in all the I have no idea what's going and the I almost burnt down my house. It's real and I like that these channels with bad music and fast forward I can't stand. If they mess up you would even know it because the blow right by it. Thanks for taking us into your world very interesting.👍👍.
Glad you dig the format. I try to leave in as much as I can without making the videos 8 hours long.
this thing looks insane!
Old ladies purses are another source for leather. Can be had cheaply at thrift stores.
I like old busted furniture when i need a bunch, most free leather couches have a good yard or 2. You also get polyester speaker cab filler. I bet you could tear it down to the wood and build a whole cabinet if you're thrifty.
We all miss SPF. Bring it back! YT algo friggin loves regular uploads as well.
Love your content keep up the good work please
Thanks, will do!
Nice one Brad, another piece of history saved.
Good Video!
That one is a beauty!
I have a Jackson 103. Love it.
Good one...you just don't give up...that what makes you awesome...
Plus I’ve been told I’m pretty good in the sack!
You know you are Gen X when you reference Karate Kid II.
Thank you.
That's cool got it working
Finally got to watch it!
I know for me your one of the best techs on CZcams. Weather it's the Cadence in which you speak or the fact that even if you burn it down and 100 percent your fault you leave it in you don't edit the mistakes out. It makes watching enjoyable even though I do nothing with Guitars amps or anything musical. But I do make custom knives and have to wire my own machinery from time to time and watching you just gives me ideas and the courge to do the work myself. I just dont like videos to be in fast-forward with crappie music and the person editing the videos so they look perfect. Anyway thanks for sharing 👍.
Oh Bradley....you so crazy!!!!💜🤣💣🔥
Keep on keeping on Brad!!!
You've convinced me. I believe I just might do that.
Oh Lord Jesus it’s a Fire!
Lmaoooo "Oh shit!" 🤣🤣 Im glad youre ok man!
You aren't the only one hitting shadow ban weird algorithm stuff, many of the channels I subscribe to who post on the regular magically come back and I see I missed tons of new content... fine for me really cause I binge it but yeah it is a bizarre and freaky ass thing dude
That’s a cool piece. I remember in my hometown at the SuperX drug store, when I was a kid, they had a huge tube tester. Whenever we went, I’d take tubes in there and play with the tester while my mother shopped.
Well, I've been pre-occupied with my own projects... but its nice to see that you have a tube tester adventure also. Mine was with an Eico 666... and it's been a Go-To for anything that isn't a standard issue guitar tube.... I've got the Orange Divo for that. This tester you've got is an emission tester, and doesn't do transconductance. It'll find the worn out or shorted tubes, and that's the most important part.
Hell yeah I can only imagine the frustration of chasing that with a bad tube but it probably led to you addressing some further components inside the device that might not have received the much needed tlc it needed had it just worked right away
"We're gonna need another Timmy." And people thought there was a point in humanity...lmfao!
One of those small cutting wheels shattered and a piece stuck in my plastic eye protector, right where my eye would have been. Those little buggers are dangerous.
The fiberglass cutting wheels are much better than the red ones. Consider other brands like gyros. If you do, get their spindle too as the mounting hole is slightly larger.
Aint nobody gots time fo dat!
Your fire experience reminded me of the time I had an old Sears vacuum that’s motor was making a lot of noise, and without thinking too much about it, I grabbed a can of WD-40 and sprayed the ends of the motor and closed the vacuum's lid. I turned the vacuum on and the vapor of the WD-40 exploded and blew the lid off of the vacuum, scared the crap out of me,
Great video thanks.. I have a dead Jackson 637 that I will be working on soon. I wanted to ask if there is any calibration for these tube testers available ?
Oh lord it's a fire!
The line voltage setting for different filament current that tubes draw and tend to drag down the transformer secondary voltage thereby affecting the readings.
It becomes more significant for the transconductance tube testers like the Hickock's.
Never give up, never surrender! Nice job!
The video was not in my 'bell' notifications. Who the heck knows why? I mean, I've watched pretty much every video you've done in the past three years and I am a member of the channel. All of the Project V and the Lotus Eaters videos show up in my bell notifications so I don't think it's a 'politics' thing. It's a mystery wrapped in an enigma surrounded by stupidity. Your new videos do usually show up in 1st position on my front page, but, it would be nice to catch the premiers.
Thanks for the cool vid, Brad!
Unfortunately, there's no one we can really complain to.
Don’t ever work in a machine shop if metal chips give you OCD. I did that for 30 years, constantly buried in sharp metal chip, razor sharp lathe chips slicing you to the bone, burns from hot chips down your shirt…….. was a great place for a guitarist to work 😝. Was so glad to say goodbye to that world and start rebuilding amps, guitars and radios. The math and skills I learned of making things dead flat and things like that definitely made my guitar work skill better. Other than the good pay it wasn’t pleasant. Had chips in my eyes, gashes that sent me to the hospital a few times. I rather get shocked than gashed open to the bone. Seen some others loose fingers and ends of fingers over the years.
"Let's fire it back up" -- LOL
Brad, been loving your videos for years, just bought a Hammond L-143 tone wheel spinet organ from an old church that I'm looking to restore. On another note, have you ever heard of Metasonix musical equipment? The owner appears to have a vast knowledge of tube equipment and tubes in general, just sharing.
That is a great Hammond. You'll love it.
"I said oh Lawd Jesus it's a fire, Aint nobody got time fo dat"
I certainly didn't...have time fo dat, I mean.
Hey man I've got a 2203 that I built and I'm trying to fix a fizz issue....have you had any experience with fizz issues before....the amp has a nice tone but the fizz is annoying....
James Tayolr of scrolls..good one..
Did the look of the Transformer not put you off cranking it up on the Variac? Damn Brad, Refrigerator? It looks like it's been in the garden pond 💥
Nah. Transformers often have rust. Just maybe not quite this bad.
while working on a 1930s tube radio I decided to refill my gas powered soldering iron. Now mind you, I also had a candle next to me on the bench for heat shrinking. So, as you can imagine the fireball in front of my face and the additional load in my underwear that ensued, I vowed never to again have a constant open flame near me. Gas powered soldering irons are for field use! Not for use inside houses!
That scroll at the end reminds me of the ancient scroll that Chris Farley accidentally catches on fire in Beverly Hills Ninja lmao
I totally forgot about Beverly Hills Ninja scroll. Missed opportunity for a perfect meme. I might have to re-edit the video now. 😂
@@TheGuitologist Hahaha
I guess I should of watched to the end!!!
so the tube tester failed testing...that's like an mc escher drawing, isn't it? ;)
Interesting, perhaps replace the pink cap???
Do I smell BBQ???😂
The reason the "spigot" gets turned on and off randomly is because youtubes "algorithm" is a lot more human controlled than yt would like people to believe. One person at yt sees a channel and decides they like that person and they turn on the spigot, then another person at yt sees the channel and decides they dont like it and turn off the spigot. But they want everyone to believe that its just some random algorithm when its not. The algorithm is just for random small youtube channels as its not possible for every single youtube channel/video to be analyzed by a yt employee. Until the channel will start gaining a bit of traction, until an employee finds/sees it, and then they decide your fate.
That is what "shadow banning" is, when they turn off the spigot. And i believe there is different levels of this.
I believe this is correct.
Referring to the scrolls, not the dead sea ones but tube reference ones, does anyone know where to find pdfs or txt files of them?
I have a 36" plotter & think I could make a couple bucks selling reprints on quality paper.
Enjoying your videos & honesty, Brad, you Pyromaniac! 🔥
Hey Brad,
If you can get me the information about that scroll I can create a simple file you can print on a regular printer and replace it but then you would have a lot of cut and paste work recreating Mr. Miagi's scroll of Doom.
Would need measurements of the spacing and a copy of the scan, don't mind helping you out considering how much help your videos have been to me over the years.
At 17:50 the getter in that valve/tube looks quite shiny in the video but almost transparent when we see it later. I'm probably not making a like to like comparison referring to the appearance at 58:14 and the new one at 58:24 but I'd expect both to look somewhat similar anyway.
.. I wonder if that pin straightener stressed the glass seals and caused it to leak?
*EDIT*: Much more obvious at 59:19. You can see right through the getter!
Love the intro’s. Fuckin great.
I think it's due to algorythym changes YT has done. The last few weeks I've been seeing a lot of channels (yours included) have their old videos show up as new suggestions even though I remember watching them. They're suggesting these videos over new content cause they are saying I haven't watched but I don't click on them because I remember watching. This keeps new content out so I think it's hurting new media feeds/views.
Yep. I've noticed the same.
I should get me one of those...
One thing I like about your channel, as i do the same thing... is the TOILING AND CURSING. THAT’S 90%... FIRST THE MIRACLE... THAN THE SPEAKING IN TONGUES... WHEN THE MIRACLE KICKS YOUR ASS. Like that old warning "kid, electricity will KILL YOU... with a switchblade knife. STAB STAB STAB! Any questions? NO QUESTIONS! YOU'RE DEAD! lol
Hi Brad . I am old enough to have used contact cleaners that worked :p .The EPA did away with them in the 1990's . Its easy to know why they weren't promoting you . You started talking politics and google/ youtube are very left wing. The party of tolerance is not very tolerant . Keep the repair videos coming- great job . I am a big fan of you and Uncle Doug .
100% spot on. EPA can eat a dick.
Yeah the older cleaners worked better and evaporated faster. It wasn't us techs that were causing problems. Large industry was carelessly disposing it years ago.
I thought I noticed a difference. Freaking Hell, it's not like it got any cheaper. We're paying for memories.
I know a guy locally around here who has all kinds of these old tube testers. If you're ever interested in a specific model or something. Give me a shout.
Gotta keep those parts cooled off in the refrigerator!
Do you know of a place where I could get a scroll copied and reprinted in one (1) piece? Not twenty (20) sheets of A4 taped together.
A print shop could do it, I’m sure. Might have to splice in one place.
I hate it when that happens. 🔥
This is an ameter. You have to supply a constant current of a few 100 uA or so.
Right. It has a bias just like a tube.
Is it just viewer perspective or is this bench deeper that the one you had in your previous home?
Not deeper. This is the same one. I have a second bench in this room but my daughter has taken that one over for her artwork.
you could redo that entire paper roll, just need a continuous feed typewriter and paper, copy it all, then laminate it, then it would be permanently protected from weather, not fire..
Amen to the eBay comment Brad!
Rick beato sent it your way
Must have
Blowing on it is like fanning the fire. Baking soda works or put a towel over it and press it down.
When a fire erupts spontaneously, you aren't going to go "where's the baking soda?"
@@TheGuitologist Yes Brad I agree, theres no time for it, I would have taken my shirt off and smothered the fire, or maybe for future incidents mount a fire exstinguisher near your desk.
The first half reminded me of a nice motto:
Let's get dangerous! (c) Darkwing Duck
I'm gonna says the odds are 1 in 12
So frustrating because I know the answers to all of the questions you asked a year ago (-:
That guy who came out for TV repair, and charged for "rejuvenating" tubes. 😅
I think people on the left leaning side of things miss you a little! As all the nonsense of the last couple years has played out, some of us are thinking “maybe Brad wasn’t as bat shit crazy as we thought” A lot of us have been pushed to the middle, or even tipping over the the right on so many issues these days.
What’s the phrase I’m looking for…I told you so.
That’s funny because the far right has done the opposite to me.
I knew meter was fine, not good idea putting voltage on it could damage it
How did humans evolve the reflex to immediately start BLOWING on a surprise fire thereby just giving it MORE oxygen? 😂
Because in many cases, excessive bursts of air extinguish flames. It's the quickest solution to most fires. Those that don't go so easily need the suffocation treatment.
I would print a new scroll.
You should photo copy the scroll. It'll take multiple scans, but at least you'll have a backup.
Edit: And about 5 seconds after I post...
Replace the capacitor’s. All of the old capacitor’s are electrically leaking .
The spigot is open.
FOR NOWlll
I wish you could pay for an escrow service for buying online in general not just Ebay. Ebay owns paypal I don't see how that's not a conflict of interest. For some items it would be totally worth it. A service that is independent of seller and buyer that holds the merchandise and money. They can check authenticity of the item and send it on and when you receive the item they release the cash to the seller. Or you can pay them to hold the cash until you release it. As seller's gain confidence in the service they will be sure if they send the correct item they will get paid for it. Nobody is paying an escrow to run a scam on sellers.
