    --------------
    A Canadian viewer sent me this vintage analog military multimeter (voltmeter, ammeter, ohmmeter). I had filmed this a while back and forgotten about the footage. So here it is. We'll open this thing up and hook it up to a battery and try to test some stuff. I'm not sure what military operation used this thing, but I doubt they got very much practical testing done with it, as the ranges are too far off to be practical for really much of anything. If you have ideas on what military used this, please comment below.

    Man, that meter takes me way back to my earlier USAF years, working on the oldest operating ATC radar set on the planet, back in the late 70s - early 80s. 99.99999% 50s era vacuum tube technology. The 0.00001% that wasn’t a tube circuit was a transistor video amplifier circuit that replaced the original one. You would have *LOVED* it, Brad! Mocking up equipment on the bench, looking for burnt components, swapping out tubes, and most fun of all: occasionally de-soldering, replacing, and soldering in new tube sockets. The only negative was that even though it was an Air Force Base, you’re still under the FAA, who would get pretty antsy if your ATC radar is off the air for a couple of hours. Then, after a couple *more* hours they’d start *really* breathing down your neck. It could be a lot of pressure, but...yeah, you would’ve loved it, man.

    Military training in 1980 was on a similar looking but more features AM/PSM 7. After a while you learn to flip the range until the meter reads near the center of the scale then look at the switch setting to figure which number is your reading. the one exception is voltage, on that you start at the highest scale setting on the switch and come down. The meter should work on voltages without a battery, it’s just used for Ohms. Decent digital meters are so cheap now it doesn’t make sense to lug that thing around but it does look cool.

    Brad, when on the 150V selection, you should be looking at the 1.5V scale. the .5 would then be 50 the 1.0 would be 100 etc. That would make each line 5 volts each, so for nine volts it should go to just left of the second line on that scale. In order to calibrate the meter you should do a zero test. Put selector on resistance and short the leads. Then turn the screwhead at the bottom of the meter movement until the needle is right on zero. If it zeros correctly, but still gives inaccurate measurements, then some of the resistors in the circuit itself has drifted and may need to be replaced.

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  Před 4 lety

      I know... The problem is the scale isn't that easy to read for most real world voltages you might encounter in DC. Hard to tell 9V from 12V.

    • @srtamplification
      @srtamplification Před 4 lety

      @@TheGuitologist The problem with military equipment, is they usually had things that were specific for the task. For example, the Signal Corps puts in a requirement for a piece of test equipment that can do certain things. There may be another piece of equipment in the supply inventory that can do the job, but because the requirements don't match exactly, the bean counters write up another procurement document. They get a piece of equipment built by some company under contract with all of the specifications in the request. Pretty soon every job in the military that requires a similar piece of equipment, all have their own specialized version, instead of having one that can do everything needed by everyone. They still do this, but it has got better over the years. I know in my branch of the Engineers, we have equipment that no one else in the entire military has. This meter served a particular purpose. I would guess it was used by the Signal guys (commo). They were not checking for random things and wanting to know what the value was, they were using it for specific tests.

    This meter looks like it was made to support field telephone circuits and possibly ordnance firing circuits. A meter like this wouldn't be too useful to work on radios as the ohms per volt would be pretty low. In other words it would load down the circuit under test and give false readings. Basically with this meter you are looking for shorts and opens and indications of voltage present.

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  Před 4 lety

      Yeah, I’ve struggled to see much use for it in real world scenarios. Testing for shorts or the presence of voltage is about it. Accuracy is out the window.

      It'll be along ideological lines. I mean, you're seeing the battles lines right now - ANTIFA and BLM types claiming the civilization that came before them is systemically raycyst and their media and Democrat cheerleaders, against the silent majority, Republicans, conservatives, and classical liberals. Inasmuch as those lines parallel closely the rural and urban lines, you're right. But the basis for it all is a false understanding of the complexities of history. It is an ideological POISON PILL that has been slowly introduced into society for at least the last 15 years, and had grown nuclear since 2015.
