I worked in movie theaters from the fall of 1986 to the fall of 1990, back then movie theaters were contracted to show a movie for anywhere from 3 to 12 months. It would be about 6 months after a movie left the theaters that it would become available on cable, then another 3 to 6 months for it to come out on video for purchase or rental. That model guaranteed people going to the theaters to see a movie because it was a long wait if you missed it. Now with quick release to streaming, 60+ inch HD TVs with surround sound in people’s living rooms, you’re better off waiting and watching at home. You miss out on the large audience experience only a theater can provide, but you can tell people to be quiet in your living room, so…

Welcome to film making. A studio making a remake is just risk avoidance. The studio does this because it seems they are unable to make a film for less than 100 Million. The issue is that films cost too much and have to bring in more money than films even corrected for inflation compared to films in the 80s and 90s and 2000s in order to break even. As such, studios are unwilling to make original films because a certain number will be failures.

The bigger problem is that we, as a society, have gotten lazy and complacent. Many people were so conditioned to mask up and stay at home, that now, they would just rather permanently stay at home, especially since a new movie will be streaming soon enough, or that new movie may be a Netflix original and will never get into the theater anyway. It’s not about lower quality features, let’s face it, in the history of Hollywood films, most movies are low quality, so bad movies are not enough to explain our current problem. Look at The Marvels, it bombed at the theater, but is now killing it streaming - it still sucks, but it is making a lot of money, because people don’t have to leave home to watch it.

  • @tommytank5514
    @tommytank5514 Před měsícem +8

The financial situation is even worse than that. In the US, the studio gets around 50% of the sales and the theater gets the other 50%. So if the total budget is $100m, then the movie has to make $200m just to breakeven. The split is even worse for studios on international tickets. And remember, the "budgets" are not the real budgets -- a major release will easily spend $100m on advertising. Hollywood is going broke fast, but not fast enough.

SJ may want to look back in history to see this actually happened in the past during the 1950s & 60s when televisions became a common feature in everyone's home not just well off people.consider films like Rebecca, Citizen Kane or All About Eve to be cinematic masterpieces, you’re not alone. All three were born during Hollywood’s Golden Age, a wildly creative era in which movies dominated mass entertainment and their glamorous stars entranced the public.
But during the 1940s and 1950s, that success suddenly evaporated. Movie palaces shuttered, once mighty studios closed down and some of Hollywood’s greatest actors, directors and screenwriters stopped making films. It was the end of an era and television was to blame: the new technology effectively killed Hollywood’s Golden Age.
The movie studios had to switch strageties and came up with big epic films in Cinemascope, 3D, wide screen(curved) and stereo sound. Everything television could not do well. Now studios will have up their game again competing with streaming and HD television with must see event movies.

2:40 Actually it did have a good following which is why in the 80s it was on for 5 seasons. I have found memories as a 12 year old boy watching the Fall Guy which was basically a action/comedy. It also did not hurt that Heather Thomas was in a bikini or short shorts for most of the episodes. So, when your dad remembers it immediately and mother does not, Welcome to 80s television where show were programed for a specific demographic. The issue is exactly your point though and that "The Fall Guy" would only be remembered for 50-70 year old men which is not a large enough demographic to be a summer block buster. I personally did not even think of asking my sons to go because WHY? The have no interest in the old TV show and why would they want to see this one. In summary, Hollywood needs to just make original films again instead of rehashing the past.

Everyone respecting the craft of presenting entertainment in style and as a service. The last time i went, there were som half awake teenagers working there. The film started 25 minutes after it's supposed to while we were force feed Terrible advertisement for those Looong 25 minutes. Then they had some sort of lottery and a cartoon "character" on screen for another 10 minutes. 35 minutes after the film was supposed to start, i was already tired and i wanted to go home before the damn movie even started. The Fall Guy is NOT ending its theatrical run.
Yes, the film was made available very early on digital.
However, the movie opened at number 1 and has only fallen to number 5 at the box office in its third weekend. That is a pretty good hold for something every media outlet is dubbing a "flop."
Quite frankly, the industry needs to completely restructure its expectations because the box office will never be the same post-covid era.
Before COVID, the average consumer went to the theater only three to five times a year. Nowadays, these "theater hobbyists" will go three times or less .. often on a major holiday season.
Unless the project is a true must-see event, people are happy to wait until digital OR see the film in theaters ONCE and wait for home markets for additional viewership. Even films that are excellent with fantastic word-of-mouth cannot expect the theater hobbyists to leave their homes.
Therefore, all these high profile films keep "flopping" and "underperforming" because the hobbyists just plain don't want to go.

I think one important reason is that, just as the part played by stunt double is seldom given sufficient recognition in real life, few people are interested in watching a movie with a stunt double as the major character. The box office would probably be much better if they instead made an action or alien movie like shown in this film with Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt as the leads.

Hadn't heard of the show it was based upon until now either; the description of it makes me think of the A-Team though, which was a favorite show back when I was a kid in the 90's and reruns ran on the same channel as like Space 1999 then. Channel 27 when I lived in Carrollton, TX, IIRC. A-Team had the same story with different details each episode, but they did it well and it was cool to see what kind of thing they'd build each time.
Doesn't look like they did anything "wrong" per se, but yeah with mostly everyone being broke now and a lot of theaters having been closed down during the bug of doom, there's not as much for films to get. In addition to other routes you mentioned, like Tubi or Pluto TV for me, I rather watch free stuff mostly when I need to prioritize survival basics like food. Not starving is always nice.
Of movies I actually plan to watch in a theater if I can, I'm looking forward to Alien Romulus. Sci-fi set in space will always be cooler to me, like of Vin Diesel films I don't really car for the car movies but the space ones are neat. Hopefully the new xenomorph film will actually be as good as the hype seems, and so far I'm optimistic at least.

I mean, yeh. Ticket prices have gone up and up and up, so all of a sudden (or more accurately, a slow gradual realisation) the idea of a "oh I'll spend my evening at the cinema today" gets thrown to the side because you can't mentally justify the cost anymore. Since 2020 and "le pandemic" I've only been to the cinema, maybe, 5 times. And each of those times I did enjoy the films and the experience of just going back to the cinema, but the ticket costs were the main hurdle all the time - I've paid for travel or parking, snacks (from outside the cinema so they're cheeper) and the ticket is still extortionate.

I love "popcorn movies" as much as I love serious, deep films (especially of the horror variety), but I agree with you: Everyone has seen an iteration of this movie so many times in the past year alone: "Ghosted", "The Lost City", and "Argyle" off the top of my head, and that's not to mention the last 20 to 30 years alone where the romance-action-comedy movies have done it better. "True Lies", "Mr. and Mrs. Smith", "Knight and Day", etc.

You make some good points about the lack of incentive to go see generic movies (and Fall Guy seemed arbitrarily linked to the 80s series IMHO just to earn interest, but it probably had the opposite effect due to a lack of a strong audience for the old IP) but I still love seeing movies on the big screen over streaming. There have been some cracking indie/smaller movies I've seen recently ranging from Triangle of Sadness to Anatomy of a Fall and my local cinema has a membership which helps as it's like having a subscription to the big screen.
