Let's also not forget that Mad Max historically has not garnered blockbuster levels of box office. It's a more niche franchise than people realize and giving it a 168 million dollar budget was a death sentence.

That's really it. This movie was a huge risk. So, while I'm not saying, don't take risks, they should obviously know that it was a huge risk to be successful.
Fury Road failed. It made 380 million at the box office, but it had a budget of 150-180 million.

Yea the one that made the most money I believe was Fury Road, but that came out 9 years ago. The level of relevance for this franchise to be able to make a spinoff movie is pretty much gone imo. In other words, they waited too long to make this movie.

I said this 9 years ago when Fury Road came out.
Mad Max was in it, but he was just there to assist Furiosa - it was her movie, not his. He spent some of his time being a captive, and some of his time losing fights, or barely winning them, while Furiosa owned that movie.
It was a good movie, but disappointing to go to a Mad Max movie and watch him be underwhelming.
Kind of like the last Doctor Strange movie, or the Loki TV show, or the Hawkeye TV show, etc.
Use the name to draw us in and then we see a movie about somebody else.
This time, the name is in the title but they didn't try to trick us; we knew Mad Max is not in the movie.
And, predictably, we weren't very interested.

I think it failed for several reasons. One, Furiosa was not an interesting enough character to need a prequel. Two, releasing Furiosa before the next Max centered movie probably confirmed a lot of suspicions about what they planned on doing with the Mad Max universe which was doing away with Max. Three, Fury Road was only a mild success despite the accolades, and I think the studios misunderstood why it was well liked overall(it wasn't because of Furiosa or at least not primarily because of her). Four, while Furiosa isn't a girl boss in either movie really, I think her character and this movie suffer from audiences being skeptical at this point of female leads in action movies where girl bosses have been prevalent and poorly written in the 9 years since Fury Road came out.

A lot of people who watched Fury Road have already forgotten about that story. Taste in audience changes in nine years especially when you have a pandemic in between. If Furiosa and Fury Road were released as a two part back in 2015 and 2016, it would have done better. As a stand alone I did like the movie and had a good story. But had to watch Fury Road when I got home to remind what that movie was about aside from the only thing I remembered which was the guitarist playing in front of that vehicle with all those speakers. Mad Max and the Road Warrior are best seen as a pair. Didn’t like the sequels as much. Fury Road was well made on its own, but it was too silly (like the war boys sniffling paint) and had too much CGI. And Mad Max was almost a secondary character in his own movie. I think you're missing why people are saying "girl boss fatigue" as to why people aren't watching this movie. It's not because she's a Mary Sue like in all the rest. It's just that Hollywood had conditioned everyone to expect that, so why shell out any money to go what the trailers portrayed as total girl-boss?

3:21 Welllll....not quite. There is an "easter egg" scene. Can't say more than that.
Went and saw it this weekend---went on the off Monday. I was one of only 4 people in the entire theater----found a nice quiet dark corner way up in the back. I personally loved it. But Mad Max movies are something of an acquired taste---car chase movies with total savagery and guys screaming "DO YOU SEE ME MAN??? DO YOU SEE ME TOECUTTAHHHH????" and a protagonist who, upon achieving his revenge moment, looks at the villainous flunkie he found and gives him the choice between cutting through his cuffs or cutting off his foot, those movies are kinda hard to stomach with modern audiences. We old guys (I'm 53) who remember the Gibson run as the protagonist felt like Hardy was a nice pick to fill in. I personally don't understand why it flopped the way it did. Maybe---like the original---it'll take some time to catch fire and find its audience. I'm pleasantly surprised to see that YOU like the franchise---that gives me hope for humanity. :)
I would offer to you---take or leave it as you like---that spinoffs have worked previously. "The Mandalorian" worked out pretty well, so did "The Bad Batch". Disney peed in their own bed with firing Gina Carano though. The reimagined Battlestar Galactica (2004) improved enormously on the original. (Okay, that was a reboot, not a spinoff...oh well. Frak it, Imma die on this hill anyway. So say we all.) The spinoff can work, but the studios have to make sure the audience is really there.

I'm with you on a lot of what you said. I'm 54 as well. I rewatched all of the Mad Max movies prior to seeing Furiosa and it felt good revisiting the griminess of the old films!! While I love Fury Road for the high impact visuals and sound, Furiosa may not have had the same impact visually. But the characters of the movie made up for it all! For me, it was solid 7.5/10 and I'm looking forward to the future of what Miller will do with the franchise. True fans of the films will follow it regardless of it's lackluster opening, and I'm ok with that!!

I watched it. Not a bad movie at all, although no where near as good as Fury Road, but it is a different type of movie. It is paced differently. Fury Road was a massive 2 day car chase, where as Furiosa is more of a character piece that spans ten years. My point is it shouldn't have done so poorly.

Absolutely agreed. Before anyone who wants to "reeee" starts "reeeing"...like it or not, people who would want to come out and pay $25-30 a ticket to see a Mad Max film are not interested in a "modern, strong, independent female" version of Mad Max," they are interested in seeing...MAD MAX! "Fair" or "unfair" doesn't matter, it's just reality. Having a strong female post-apocalyptic hero is fine, but the way to have one is not to replace the titular male character of a franchise...it's to write an original story and awesome female protagonist with a compelling character arc. Just like Ellen Ripley from the Alien franchise or Sarah Conner from the Terminator franchise.

This is a dark and gritty movie that enhances and deepens Fury Road. It earns its R rating and is one of the most visually striking movies to come out recently even besting Dune!
