If you want people to stop criticizing Japanese voice actors, you need to stop criticizing English voice actors. There are some amazing anime's that have awesome dubbed versions. There are a lot of well known actors that put true emotion into their lines. But there are also some on both sides, dubbed and subbed. That are just poor voice actors.
A couple years ago I wrote a college paper on the differences between animation in America and Japan. It was very interesting to research, because I noticed that in every Disney animation, there was a happy ending while in... say... Miyazaki's films, the ending was often bittersweet. And the lessons the characters learn and teach the audiences are very different as well. Crispin does a fantastic job of speaking about these topics without being too over-the-top. :)
I am 95% certain that I have either Aspergers or mild autism. And this makes the choice easy. Dub all the way. I have tried to read subtitles in programs but I get distracted too easily and can' t look at a TV for to long. I do look away from a TV screen quite a few times in a 30 minute slot. So as dubbing allows me to hear the story in these cases, I choose dub.
I have alot of respect of Crispen Freeman now after hearing this...although I repected him before this because of his amazing voice for Regal (from the RPG Tales of Symphonia)
@Memorandumi I believe you misunderstood Golden Flute. Golden said animated Disney movies always have a happy ending, while Japanese animated movies are more diverse. It's the truth of the matter. I really liked the 90's american animation because several studio's opened up and many began giving mature themes, such as Gargoyles, Exosquad, and Batman Animated Series. Since most of the studio's animation departments closed, I think only Avatar: tlab has reached that same level.
Instead of choosing a side, I like how Mr. Freeman redirects the question to how anime coming overseas influences both Eastern and Western cultures (and revenue). It instills a more productive discussion and is certainly food for thought.
There are times where you can't help but watch subs, and it's not because of the voices. Not all animes get dubbed, and maybe they will in the future but if I like the story I'm not going to wait. For example, Code Geass that everyone's talking about, I saw it before it was licensed here and I wouldn't have known if it would be either. I love the japanese voices; in my opinion, they are perfect, and I'm bias towards that and I can't bring myself to buy it in English.
I like watching my anime Dub as well because i hate when im reading Subtitles and miss afew parts. But what i also hate about dubs is that the wording is different from how the subtitles are. =_=

I agree that you can't tell for sure the quality of a sub without knowing the language (but there are some good anime that I cannot watch in English due to poor dubbing) but even as one with only a passing familiarity with Japanese, there are some nuances that translate poorly to English, or at least Western culture. Archetypes, social dynamics, and so on.
My favorite dubbing company is Funimation. What I always loved about Funimation is unlike 4Kids they don't try to butcher an anime even aa childrens anime to the point where its almost Barney quality. They also give good dubbing and don't try to americanize every little thing.
I'd probably also take a good dub over a good sub usually, but it depends. Two that come to mind are Metal Gear Solid and Xenosaga. There are certain things that are often done differently in Japanese and English that still get carried across through the language barriers that you'll notice even if you don't speak the language. For instance, character reactions, gasps/shocks etc. are done in a way that still sound odd if there done with the same intensity in Rnglish for some reason.
@theAngryscotman It can be. Though you'd best be willing to get in line hours in advance for whatever guests you want to see. Their autograph lines fill up quickly.
But in the same since, I can see why some dub haters would go so far as to piss out over an anime getting a dub. From what I can understand, it is because living in the modern age that we do, subbed anime is available waaaaay before the dub. This gives the anime fan the chance to get accustomed to the anime and the voices. So when the trailer for the dub is out they bash it because the voices don't match the ones they are use to and it bugs them.
@MrKain2009 I watch over 90% of my anime in Japanese, but many productions are not only better in dub (I mean English) but they should be dubbed. Examples would be Hellsing, Baccano!, Romeo x Juliet, and Porco Rosso. For any of those to be in Japanese would just be ridiculous.
i cant agree actually with crispin here, i think its awesome that there gearing anime more towards a western audience, they still keep the anime style but mix in stuff that appeals to the western crowd too, like me hands down my Fav Genra of anime is the Knights in shining armor and magic genra aka Berserk, slayers, guin saga, claymore, Orphen, final fantasy, etc.... i say BRING IT ON JAPAN!! I WANT MORE!! u make it ill buy it!
The only main beef I have with dubs is the CONSTANT ad-libbing and removal of orchestra music (which adds dramatic effect to a scene). The two best examples of this are the dub versions of One Piece and any of the Yu-Gi-Oh! series. Pro-dubbers get stumped in the debate every time I bring up these two series.
Pokemon was the first real mainstreamed anime...and it was easily digested. If you look back, 4kids actually did a very good job with the original series. Things started going downhill after YGO. DBZ was good, but Pokemon had a much broader appeal than DBZ in regards to a fanbase. Growing up, I was a diehard Toonami fan...I grew up with DBZ and YuYu Hakusho. However, Pokemon still kept me very entertained.
But I believe that if they would pull their heads out of their ass and actually give they anime a chance to let them try the new voices, then they might actually like it. Maybe even more than the original voice actors. And what a lot of people have failed to see is that the people are voice actors. Their job is to give their own portrayal of the character they were commissioned to do. Not imitate the original actors. And because they fail to see this and continue digging their heads further up..
i would if the dub was close to the original, but u must admit sumtimes they the dub can be better or the sub can be better, i just like it when it's true to the story that was originally written

Sure, there's 4Kids that actively engages in such activity (as was late 90s-early 2000s Funimation), but nowadays, you'll be hellbent to see any of those modifications being made on localized anime today. Not to mention that attempts to modify the original content are, naturally, very frowned upon by the community, resulting in no changes occurring at all. Just look at Dance in the Vampire Bund, for instance. [ct'd]
The strange thing about Evengelions dub is that the original (Neion Genesis) is pretty bad, yet the rebuild of, done by the same VAs is a lot better, well that's my thoughts on it.

@EnchantedMist94 Now, don't get me wrong. If you prefer subs, that's fine. Hell, if you understand Japanese to the point where you can catch all of the little nuances, that's great. Feel proud that you've mastered a difficult language, at least from a Western perspective (I know a bit of Chinese, not nearly enough to claim fluency). And really, sometimes the redone dialogue, and the English voice casts do work. Hellsing sounds a LOT more convincing with attempts at British and German accents, and Hetalia seems much funnier to me with the inclusion of the horridly offensive accents. Especially Japan's Engrish... I'm so horrible.

@EnchantedMist94 As for the whole original vs. dub argument, sure, it would be easy to make a local comparison of an English movie being better than a Japanese dub, but for those that don't know the language the original film was in, (reiterating what TheShockMaster said) how are you to know, aside from instinct that it was the original language it was released in, that the Japanese is better? For all we know, it could be horribly acted, but unless we know Japanese, how can we tell?

English Dubs are ALWAYS better then Japanese original with Subs. I swear every male Japanese voice actor sounds like he's taking a huge shit when they start shouting and it sounds really dreadful when they say English words like "Master" or "Big Bang".

There are times where you can't help but watch subs, and it's not because of the voices. Not all animes get dubbed, and maybe they will in the future but if I like the story I'm not going to wait. Indeed. Regal and Siegfried are two of my favorite Namco characters, and the fact that he dubbed both is just awesome.

English Dubs are ALWAYS better then Japanese original with Subs. I swear every male Japanese voice actor sounds like he's taking a huge shit when they start shouting and it sounds really dreadful when they say English words like "Master" or "Big Bang".
