      I've seen fake flowers on a wedding cake before and BELIEVE me they looked nothing like this one. In fact I was shocked when I realized they were fake. The flowers were fake but the leaves and vines were made from sugar and fondant. I was blown away.
      Because they used fake flowers, they gave the couple a discount on the cake. Everyone was impressed with how the cake turned out, nobody could tell the flowers were fake. In the end it was a good faith gesture on the part of the caterers/bakers. 💒🍰💗

      The size, height of the 1st cake would be one of the reasons why it cost more. Although the flowers don’t look exactly like the picture, they are hand painted and has different flowers as opposed to the roses only cake. The sugar flowers make a huge difference in appearance and would also run the cost up a bit more than dollar store flowers. I can totally understand the difference in prices and can appreciate the time and effort of the 1st cake.

    The gold tier on both cakes are not straight, its leaning to the side by like a lot. But this is why you always have a cake tasting at the place you are ordering your wedding cake at to make sure you like the flavors and textures of the cake.
    A new wedding cake trend is to do a fake cake out of foam for display and have sheet cake in the back of the hall for guests, its cheaper and easier. The problem with tiered cakes is the cake has to be strong enough to stand up and it can lose a lot of its flavor or have a strange texture.

      My mother used to do wedding cakes in the 70s and 80s and people would order up to ten tiers, sometimes going straight up, other times some were connected sideways by bridges and waterfalls. Occasionally a huge, multitiered cake would be ordered for a small wedding, so most of the cakes would be polystyrene, with the real ones subtly marked so the couple and their caterers knew which to cut.

      I have seen a lot of debate about this issue recently, I had found that the bakers who make the more intricate cakes justify using boxed cake because they claim nobody can tell the difference and others that people go to them for the design and not the taste. Which could be if the person has tasted your cake priorly. The one I find the weirdest is the one who claim nobody can taste the difference, boxed cake has a very distinctive taste that a lot of people enjoy because is very nostalgic. Also the crumb and texture is very unique to the box cake. Making a scratch cake is a science and there is so many ways to screw it up, some people just don't want to take the time to perfect it. Ever since I started baking from scratch I haven't gone back, but that's because flavor is the most important part of the cake for me and i love the researching and planning cake flavors. I don't care how pretty it looks if it does not taste good.

    I also actually think that it’s really smart to have a regular cake flavor to contrast a fancy cake flavor. As you mentioned, the cake is for everyone at the wedding to enjoy. You’re bound to have some important guests at the wedding who aren’t going to want hazelnut cream or Chile powdered bacon or what have you. So having some cake that is adventurous or interesting, and then having some for grandma who only likes the stuff she remembers, it’s probably smart for having a good party.

    • @stevencgr
      @stevencgr Před rokem +7

      this does make sense, but part of me also thinks, the cake should represent the couples taste, it's the most expensive dessert I'll ever buy, I want all of it to be flavours I love, if Grandma doesn't like salted caramel or whatever, we'll be sure to have a sweet treat she does like available, but the couple shouldn't have to compromise on the most important food item. hopefully my guests will like the cake too, but I think it should be acceptable for a couple to be a little bit selfish, they are already paying for your meal (usually)

    • @EliotHochberg
      @EliotHochberg Před rokem +5

      @@stevencgr well, the bakery should give the couple what they ordered, but it depends on what the instructions are. Also if I understand correctly, there’s often a sheet cake available at larger weddings that could be a more standard flavor.

    We had a home bakery for our wedding and the day before our wedding were told by our venue that we couldn't serve it because it wasn't a "commercial bakery". We frantically looked for a solution and called a local grocery store for a sheet cake (vanilla with strawberry filling). The grocery store came through at a low cost of $75 for a full sheet. Come the day of the wedding we sliced and fed each other the beautiful wedding cake which got wheeled out back and packaged to take home. Then they plated and served the grocery store cake which everyone was complimenting and LOVING! Lesson learned. Save money on your wedding cake and pay for a smaller cake or "dummy" cake for display and then do a sheet cake for way less.
    Edit: We wound up eating cake for many weeks later...lol.

      Most venues would not care because the food safety liability would be on the caterer/customer, but this venue feels that they could be liable if someone where to get sick so they put in place stricter requirements.
      Not sure why they feel they would be liable, that's just the reason they would require the certification.

Wow, very sloppy edible image. Shouldn’t be seeing a prominent seam . And why are the tiers so small?? And ARTIFICIAL FLOWERS!!! Holy Moly…you totally got robbed. Omg….Laurie you’re face on the green apple cinnamon 🤣🤣🤣….soap…too funny. Gotta say that’s a totally strange wedding cake flavour. Can’t imagine it being popular. I mean I guess so, but I don't know if this applies to cake. It is a wedding cake after all, so when someone comes with a request for their special day you'd probably want to really deliver on that specific request and not play around with your own take on the idea. I'd get it when it's a birthday cake, there it makes more sense to have more freedom, right?
      And another thing is, you don't always have the option to reach out to the original artist with a baker. With a painting or a sculpture etc. You can order it from across the world and maybe have some careful delivery done, what if the baker is from Hong Kong and your wedding is in the US? It wouldn't make sense to go out of your way and get that baker to do it. Maybe it's not such an insensitive thing to blatantly copy a cake.

      I think she already did that with her crayon box cake.

    Hahah. I'm dying about the smallest throwaway line. My brother is a foot taller than me and we ALWAYS quote "Orange County!" "You are my same height, that is neat..."

    I would definitely go for the 5 star cake. Also shows how important to do a cake tasting for a cake as well lol!

    I went to an upscale bakery in our town to get my MIL a 90th birthday cake. I asked for beautiful bright spring flowers all over it and when I went to pick it up, it looked like a Walmart cake with pastel flowers made with icing tips. It wasn't a $100 cake (what I had paid for) but a $15 department store cake.

    I love when you do these types of videos 🥰 And my absolute favorite videos are of you making cakes! Anyhow, your face when you tasted the green apple cinnamon cake, had me wondering what it tasted like. Then you said "it tastes like soap!" And I quickly changed my mind on wanting to try it! Lol

    You are a ROCK STAR when it comes to cake decorating - never feel "less than" about your work, ever. About the cakes - it's odd to me that anyone would offer a flavor that is so polarizing that they'd say people either love it or hate it. When it comes to wedding cakes, the couple wants everyone to love the look/taste of the wedding cake. I think that's why people select flavors/flavor combos that most people like so everyone gets a bite of something enjoyable. No matter what, no cake - for any occasion - should look like it was pieced together. At the very least, the bakery should have reprinted the edible paper and had one inconspicuous seam.
