Let's take a look at my favorite snubby! Though it likely isn't the gun you need.

Paul Harrell voice: "this gun fills my HAND better than this one does" 😂
Hahahaha You be the judge.
I shoot a lot and train a lot and after 10 years I finally broke down and bought a 442. I pick it up tomorrow, my first revolver, I’m very excited!
You will love it...bought 1 last month ...so light it becomes part of your body..little snappy to shoot but it's managable
8 months later, how do you like it? I been carrying a regular P365 9mm for the last 4 years...I love it, and before that I carried the Beretta Pico 380 (I got it for stupid cheap and it went bang every time I asked it to). But now I just wanting something a little different, 442 is on the list. I've shot revolvers before but never a snubby.
@@BlackwaterFather I love it, it’s my low key CCW. I had my gunsmith install the Apex Trigger Kit in it. That is MANDATORY for this gun. Brought the 12 pound trigger down to 7 pounds. I can hit the A zone (-0) out to 10 yards. It’s a hard gun to shoot but one can get good with it. For reference I can hit A zone out to 20 yards with my G19. It’s a good gun to carry if you are worried about getting mugged or robbed. Don’t expect this gun to be ideal for active shooter situations.
@@ccc9139 thank you. Good information 👍🏾, I was wondering about aftermarket trigger options. I plan on pocket carrying it as a back up to my P365 for a while.... until I get good at shooting it at least, before making it my primary CCW if I ever do so. I shoot the 365 very well, it's reliable and accurate and I shoot it often. But I can't wait to try the 442.
Considering it as my first EDC
I'm 80 and love my 442. I installed a trigger spring kit a Hogue rubber monogrip and shoot wadcutters. I shoot a lot. Works for me..
I loved everything about this video and you definitely earned my subscription. Listening to you is like chatting with my friends and we share a lot of opinions. Well done sir. Keep it up.
People are missing out. This was a brilliant vid!!!! Well done buddy!
Well done! Paul Harrell has a video that shows snubbies can be more accurate than small semi autos. I have found this true as well. Take the time to learn a safe, heavy DAO trigger and almost any trigger after that will be cake. Pocket polymer semi autos come and go but my 642 will never be sold. I understand manufacturers need to sell things so there will always be the latest and greatest, but I could care less anymore. Also, these guns don’t care about a bad grip that will jam any micro semi auto pistol. Finally, from a legal aspect, I thank no other gun represents self-defense better than a snubnose revolver. You can’t be accused of having some military, high capacity assault pistol that uses the same bullets as oppressive police men and women.
Awesome review, I’ve been considering an airweight J-frame recently and this is pushing me further towards a decision to do so.
S&W still makes versions this gun and its brother the 642 without a lock, because lots of cops carry these as backup guns (either ankle holster or stashed in their chest rig), and cops don't want the lock. SKUs #150544 and #103810. My local shop always keeps them in stock, $400 each.
Nice! That's good to know! I never see them locally, but I'm glad to know they're out there.
@@thegunpenguincan confirm. I’m a young city cop in Virginia and just bought one of the new S&W “ultimate carry” models as a backup gun. Trying my best not to be a storm trooper. Btw after having to deal with the ATF, they’re even gayer than I thought.
Love it. I've carried one in my pocket for two years. Now it's LCR.
Nice! You can't go wrong with either one!
Really enjoyed your video. I was the opisite my first handgun was a 9mm semi auto and hated it and went revolvers for 15 years and have always loved snubbies more than longer barrels. My carry gun was a ruger Alaskan 454 snubbie. My wife hates all semi autos and solely loves large bore revolvers like the 44mag and the 500s&w but she like the longer barrels
Great points. I no longer carry my 442, but when ammo is available and reasonable enough to train with, I will still take it to the range every few months or so. I shove snap caps in it and practice dry fire with it regularly though.
The 43c and 351c (22lr and 22 mag from s&w) get 8 and 7 shots, and come with XS white dot front sights (pinned) can be swapped for tritium or fiber optic if desired
M&P 340 as well but .357 Magnum
So I started out on a sw 637 after about 3 years of pistol shooting I was looking for a light weight summer gun and that's what they recommend at the LGS I snagged it then thought I made a mistake the first time at the range I had a hard time with being accurate on the gunner sights but surprisingly I like it and got better with it. Love it now
I carry this model every day in my front pocket in a Sticky Holster. It works well but is a handful even with standard power .38 special loads
I have plugged everyone of the unsightly internal hole locks on my Smith and Wesson revolvers using an aftermarket source that matches the metal of the revolver.
They're quite hideous without the plug. Yuck. Smith must stop this madness.
Wife loves her swith 442 ❤️ pro tip drop a APEX tactical J frame spring kit in it drops the pull to a smooth sweet 7 ish lbs 🇺🇲👌🏻 subbed
funny cause this was actually my first handgun lol. but unlike most people I've been shooting revolvers my whole life since I was 12. so I'm alot more familiar with the trigger pull and honestly once you master the double action trigger on any revolver there no problem. I can easily shoot comfortably up to 10 yards with it at most 15 but now I got a 340pd which is a airlite which is even lighter. being 11oz unloaded it's a great pocket gun.
But with all that having been said, what kind of flare do you use to distract the boomer RO? A handful of empty brass?
A handful of quality .38 brass sent skittering across the floor in all directions will keep them occupied for hours.
PS I love your channel.
Babe wake up new gunpenguin video just dropped
I've got a 637 airweight and dig it. Great back up peice
Just wondering if you’ve tried the Hornady critical defense lite rounds out of this gun? I hear the recoil isn’t too bad.
I own a gun collection that would make Frank Castle jealous, outta all the handguns I own, Glocks Sigs H&K you name it a 442 smith goes everywhere I go and a model 15 combat masterpiece is my nightstand gun, I grew up shooting wheel guns, my grandfather would make wax bullets for his snubby so us kids could target practice in the alley behind his house in the River Quay, to this day I still prefer a good revolver over most auto loaders.
Hey man, this was very original. Good talk.
I Got The 442 PC (Preformance
Center) Model .38+p, Great Trigger,
I Love It...
I’ve had mine (SW 638 shrouded hammer)since 2017 and love it as a Summer carry over my HK45c. +p ammo was punishing so I stick with 130-150 gr or so HP. it’s a great “get off me” or 5-7 feet for person or animal or as a BUG.
This gun is perfect for that! It feels so much lighter than it actually is. And I'm with you, it can be worth it to put something lighter in it, like semi-wads or HPs that don't kill your wrist.
@@thegunpenguin Underwood’s Xtreme defender ammo is very comfortable to shoot in my 638!
Thanks for the recommendation! I've never tried any of their revolver ammo.
@@thegunpenguin hey gun penguin are you still a dimcrat and if so hows that biden working out for you and also am i also invited to the next barmitzva along with your buddy deviant of mossad?????
@@thegunpenguin , less one not heed my caution ⚠️ that what ever one’s firearm is called or the ammo “brand name” Can and will Be used against one in a civil suit. Don’t give the other side “ammunition”
Against you(no pun intended) at one’s deposition.
Stinky flightless bird make me crack
I have one and love it,,,,easy to carry
I had a few firearms before I got to my first J-Frame, a S&W 638-2. Suddenly I didn't know how to shoot! LOL. I was hitting low and to the left with the ammo I had. But when I cocked the hammer, I was hitting Xs because the trigger was so light. It was a used gun, btw and also my first S&W. Fast forward to today and my EDC is an M&P340. It's just so easy to carry! And it is able to fire some serious rounds. I don't consider myself an expert. Neither would anyone who sees me shoot. But it's the gun I would have if I needed someone to get off me.
Opening music gave terminator vibes, I dig it
Hm, listening to that again I hear more resemblance to The Shining. Still digging it!
Thanks, I take both comparisons as a huge compliment!
I want more Todd stories about snub-nosed revolvers
Todd stories will return! Unfortunately for the world.
Another banger!
Thanks, my friend!
Shrouded hammers are different then internal hammers. This is centenial style, has an internal hammer, DAO.. The shrouded hammer is like the original body guard models which have single action option, but the hammer is tucked between a rounded back shroud. Shrouded hammer vs internal hammer are both similarly snag reducing / snag free, but there is that slight, but functionally major difference
The first gun I ever shot was a 642. I was hooked even though it was a little unpleasant.
I'm really starting to lean more towards the reliability of revolvers.
I'm probably around the same age as you born in 84 and thought revolvers were old man guns.Watched Van damme and lethal weapon movies thinking the berretta 92 was the greatest.Late 90s glock started taking over and I wanted one.Glock 19 and Smith and wesson model 36 were my first guns and quickly realized why revolvers were so awesome.Fast forward at 38 years old own 25 revolvers and maybe 9 semi autos. Its wierd how your opinions change as you get older.
I have a model 329PD I love that is quad ported and wears a sorbethane padded rubber 500 S&W Hogue rubber grip. And very light!!!
Nice! I bet the porting helps a ton. Who did the porting for you?
@@thegunpenguin Mag-Na-Port did it plus polishing the trigger and hammer and did the EDM aka electrical discharge machining of the V-notch blade with a vertical line in the notch of the V-notch blade. To line up with the Mega-Pro tritium big dot front sight.
@@jeffreylocke8808 Nice! I hear they do amazing work!
First! Woot!
So ya bought a wrist snapper!
My buddy bought a Ruger LCR-X .357 snubnose. Shot 3rnds of 125gn Remington green and white box and handed it back to him. I prefer my GP100 for shooting. But the snubby is super nice for carrying. Good job finding a prelock model.
S&W still makes no lock Centennial J Frames.
Haha! Thanks! 've got a few wrist snappers; I must hate my hands. I'm a big fan of the LCR as well, but .357 out of one is no fun. And I'm with you, I prefer my GP100 from a fun perspective. You can shoot 357s through that thing all day without a problem.
Great video! I actually just purchased a 642 so this was a good watch while I’m waiting for it in Hawaii gun jail. Don’t worry, the 642 isn’t my first but it is my goal ccw…whenever Hawaii decides to follow the SCOTUS ruling xD
Thank you for the kind words! The 642 is an amazing gun, as long as you know what you're getting yourself into, and you do. Let me know how you end up liking it!
They won't decide to. They will be forced to. Mahala.
I was thinking of getting a small wheel gun I was thinking of really ruger lcr or the kimber k6s.
The 442/642 dosen't need a trigger job. Load it up with snap caps and pull the trigger about 1,000 times and it will smooth out and lighten up a bit. It will also give you peace of mind that there are no defective parts from the factory. It will also strenthen your trigger finger, all of which are good things. A 7-pound trigger job will also lighten up with use, over time, and eventually you will have light primer strikes. The stock trigger/spring will work perfectly fine 30 years later. I would not trust my life to a trigger job but you do you.
A S&W 642 is going to be my ccw here in NJ now with the Supreme Court ruling. Submitting my ccw packet this Monday
An update, got my NJ ccw back in November and carrying an airweight 642 has been my companion with me everyday where legal
The constitution says any gun is always legal
What's the name of your nickle plates gun it looks nice is it a 38
I agree 💯
Smith should make j-frames in .32 caliber again!!
I agree! I'd be 100% in.
The new Lipsey's S&W UC guns are chambered in .38 Spl and .32 H&R Mag.
@@thegunpenguin
Even after shooting a ton of 357 through my gp100 shooting a smallish smith with wood grips was a bit painful.
I agree. You can shoot the GP100 all day, but the Smith is tiring.
@@thegunpenguin Yup, the big six inch 💦 really soaks up the recoil. I don't reload as much as I used to, but when I did I always loaded full power 158's, because why not?
Definitely no regrets getting it as my first. Over the years I've put a spring kit in it and the wood grip from the fancied up one they sell now.
just use wadcutters in it.
I'mma need that 3" SP101, chief.
It's killer. One of my favorites! You'd really enjoy it -- despite being small, it handles .357 like a champ.
I use my late wife's 442 for summer EDC...
The 442 is a fantastic summer choice! And I'm sorry about your wife; I can't imagine what it's like to lose a spouse.
I shy away from "airweight" because the recoil from standard pressure 3would not be mitigated as it would be with a "regulation 22 oz 442". I have trhe "42 series Taurus clone 850CIA", and its near-to 442 weight, and there is no recoil felt, with LWC and LSWC nonhp ammunition.
In archery, it is said if you learn to point, you can learn to put the arrow on the spot. Snubbies are made for point shooting, and from the hip shooting. I had a broken Taurus snubbie with a CT grip, so I familiarized myself by using that gun as to where eye, finger, and gun were directed. In "the suggested range for ccw encounters", I am confident.
(Note: should it come forth, I do not consider Buffalo Bore standard pressure. My Taurus is not rated nor barrel imprinted for plus p ammunition.)
Yesss
I had the option to buy the 442, but I went with the 637 instead. I use it as a "pillow gun".
Nice! The 637s are beautiful!
get the 442/642 it makes a better pillow gun , no hammer to snag.
I don't own or shoot autos and I wanted to get 1 auto to rule them all and never have to buy another. I decided on a scandium sw1911 commander, which I did and got a great deal on. First time to the range, rapid fire, everything was well on target. I succeeded.
Get your first revolver and you need to learn how to shoot, which I do very well
I edc a 642 PC with full moon clips ..reload in a snap..👍
As a fellow revolver bro who does carry a J frame, imo the 638 is a straight upgrade to the hammerless versions. I honestly wish that the New Lipsey's Ultimate Carry J Frame was built on the 638 frame rather than the 642.
Very wholesome origin story of The Gun Penguin 🥲
I recently got a S&W 638. I’ve talked about it over in the discord, but I’m very fond of it and impressed. If you do your part as the shooter, it’ll do it’s part. Like you said, a lot of people just don’t wanna put in the practice to get good with it.
I agree. They're fantastic guns, but you absolutely have to do your part.
I keep one of these in my car with wad cutters
I sense Elder abuse happening here! 😂 I am 63 and own one of these! I love carrying it, but I always need to practice with it, because as you know it ain’t easy to be accurate with it. The thing I tell myself is it is a get off me gun since my days of thinking I may have to be Rambo have long since died. But in the way our country has gone with all the illegal terrorists being let in, I keep this revolver as a backup. I must admit though, with aging hips where a belt gun is a major burden, I seem to always have this gun on me. So, let the chips fall where they may, at least I’ll get one or two of them before I go! Right?😂 anyway, I hope this will never happen! Very clever video. You have a great wit with your delivery. Thanks!😊
Nice unique presentation. Revolvers were crap years ago. I bought a model 15 2 inch in perfect condition approx 16 years ago for $350.00. I viewed is this an impulse buy and sold it a year later. Try to buy one now at a reasonable price.... Funny how things change.
Lol the most effective handguns are crap.
I love the 642/442. I think S&W should rename it to “The Citizen”. Great pistol.
Better to buy a phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range as your first gun.
Hey, just what you see, pal.
@@thegunpenguin
“Hey you can’t do that…”
“Wrong.”

That Colt is mid-70s? 🧐
It is!
Some good observations. But you took thirty minutes to make them when you could have made them in fifteen.
A man only interested in the climax. You must be a real hit with the ladies, gentlemen, and horses.
You can watch at 2x speed. Then its 15 minutes 😅
The hole is the only thing I don’t like about my new 29.
Totally throws off my Dirty Harry cosplaying.
You know, I would agree with the RO stereotypes….:but have you been to or seen people in a public range. Just saying
I prefer the Webley MKIV .38/200 Snub
Me too.
do I carry my Glock when I am not working, NO. I carry one of my COLT or S&W snubbies. love them. don't feel undergunned. although I have the gray parkerized Agent not the really nice blued one you have. love the 642/442 ( have both). and I have the older guns (S&W and COLTs). you can jam this into someones ribs and it will work, not the Glock. I like to use wadcutters in the lightweight ones. good penetration and very little recoil. I don't like the rubber grips on the S&W snubs and all mine have the older skinny sevice types. I get all three fingers on the grip and it helps with controlling the gun.
I firmly believe that if James Bond carried a revolver instead of a PPK he would carry a 442/642. Please let me know your opinion on this 😂
Are you trying to justify buying one? 😂 If so, I’m on the same boat as you my Asian brother.
in the books, JB WAS given a centinial airweight which would be todays 442.
637pc and 642pc every day
I regard revolvers as being an expert's gun. I know any wheelgun guy is going to outshoot a random Glock guy, and I say this as a Glock fanboy. That being said, I watched this video while reloading 125gr .38 Special. When you brought out the SP101, I was like, talk about that one more! I only own 4 revolvers, 3 of which are Rugers with the odd one out being a 642 that I bought mostly to learn how to do Smith trigger jobs
There will be an SP101 video in the coming months! I love that gun.
I'm into revolvers for the same reason of "tacticool" 9mm mega subcompacts and boring to me. Sure they're effective and all, and I love shooting everything, but these are something different.
Those opossums are so cute lol
An 80 year old lady can't shoot anything well.
A steel 38 solves most of the problems for old people. A Kimber k6 or Taurus 85 or even a king Cobra.
Trigger stacking on a revolver?! Have it worked on.
My revolver broke after 26 shots, no return phone call after a month. I don't beleive or trust in s&w quality anymore.
I didn't comment on it because I didn't have to interact with them, but I've heard anecdotally that Smith customer service leaves a lot to be desired these days. I'm sorry you're dealing with that!

“A lot of training and effort into shooting this gun”….hummm.
Guess I’ll error on the side of some things are subjective.
Shooting a J-Frame well ain’t rocket science. Not even remotely ‘difficult’.
Don’t pay any attention to the comments re recoil….as a deterrent. Plenty of loads out there that u can shoot all day long.
To each, their own, I suppose.
