- I'm Aja Dang and this is week two of renovating our old, 80 year old house. I'm happy to report, I didn't cry this week! The renovation journey is emotionally and financially draining but we are slowly but surely making progress and it's getting better each day!
If you're renovating a home yourself or have been doing it for a while, you know there are always struggles. The good news: our pergola is finally in! Perfect timing because a week later, there was a massive 30 minute storm and our front door was safe from leaks! I also learned how to fix a garbage disposal. (shout out to CZcams) It was DISGUSTING but a new skill I'm happy to have learned!

Love seeing a woman take charge and have space to feel her (very valid) feelings! It’s so cool to watch you learn new skills and make your house your home 🥰💕 peace and love, Aja!
Excellent ladder choice, great job on the garbage disposal, and congratulations on all the improvements you're making!
thanks!!
He’s like your child, holding onto you like your the mommy. ❤
he IS my child!
It was during this same time as a new homeowner that I embraced the beautiful side of the Internet, and all of the incredible trades-people putting their expertise for these tasks online! I’ve fixed all of my toilets, Door leveling, drawer liner adhesive removal…the list goes on. I love taking what I can within my own hands to save some money and be able to fix it again, or for someone else in the future!
i love your cabinets and everything white! im glad your video has a lot more wins this time around. thank you for being always honest and open about whats been going on with your house, the good bad and everything, excited to see more!
Thank you for showing us the reality behind purchasing an already built home and not just glorifying it - it’s made me rethink my home deposit figure and the need to consider having enough finances for any improvements required
yesss. I'm so glad that's what you're realizing! you can never be OVERprepared that's for sure.
I would definitely suggest having a headlamp. It unexpectedly always comes in handy when fixing a house. Like when you were under the sink.
I feel you!! I bought my home on my own last year and spent $40k renovating it so I can house hack the other half and now I'm on track to make my $ back in rental income next year. It's rough in the beginning but after taking care of the big stuff you can finally enjoy your space lol. My sinking funds gave me a lot of peace of mind
amazing!!
Hi Aja, I just want to tell you that you are one of the few CZcamsrs I feels is very "real", I love your content and always look forward to it!
I appreciate you!
Was anyone else just as excited to see Aja fix the garbage disposal? Lol I was clapping!
🎉🎉🎉
The first 2 things I did after purchasing my first property was changing my showerhead and my toilet flusher using CZcams videos. The satisfaction after completing those tasks. Gave me more confidence to tackle other things around my condo.
So glad you’re feeling better! Can’t wait to see the floors and rugs and all your plans! 🙌🏼💖
I love this series! I'm learning a lot from you. I'm glad to see you're doing better.
I'm here for this content. DIY youtube videos are the best. During the Texas freeze in 2021 I binge watched so many. We had a pipe burst and had to pull out the carpet.... never thought I could do that but good ol youtube taught me. During winter when it gets close to freezing and below freezing thats another fun issue. This past winter we opened up sink cabinets to let the heat in and slowly drip your faucets. Below freezing we turned off the water. Welcome to Houston 🤘 ❤ glad to see things are getting better 🙌
Yay! Enjoying these new homeowner videos cuz I recently bought my 1st home too and it has been a lot so seeing these videos are definitely motivating 😊
Honestly love seeing you just take everything head on. Like freakin get it girl!
LOVE how bright the kitchen is 😍
so much better!
I’ve been watching you since I was a freshman in college I think and now I’m 23 and trying to learn how to be an adult! Thanks for being so transparent, I seriously love learning from you/your videos and theyre always so helpful + entertaining 💝
So glad you got a few wins this week to help you feel more positive! The house is so nice, its going to be lovely when you’re all done!
ahhh i cant wait to see what you guys do with the house and thanks for taking us with you on this new chapter!
Yes girl! look at you go! Glad this week is better x
Congratulations!
Aja, you’re incredible! Look at what you did by yourself!! 👏🏾👏🏾
🙏🏻
Yes girl. Pivoting and taking charge. ♡⚡
yes!
Loving this series!
I loved this for you!
So proud of you for the fixing/painting !!!
thank you!
yay! I'm so happy and impressed! Way to go on that garbage disposal!!!
thank you!
The kitchen is so nice actually!!!
Good job !!!
When you said, “eeewww what the Fucckkk!!” I was dying lol
A few months ago I bought a tool box and started collecting tools so I don’t have to bother my dad for his tools… it’s helped me.
I’m learning so much about house stuff from you! Thank you for sharing and being transparent about the reality of owning an older home.
Yes! But also know, I have friends with new builds who still struggle with bad construction work. i think unless you do it yourself you'll have issues either way.
@Aja Dang new homes usually have warranty around a year.
Rooting for you! Your skin looks great btw
Good luck with renovations!
thanks!
If you're going to paint the cabinets don't skimp on the paint and invest in a paint sprayer. I did my friend's cabinets to help her sell her place and it was so much more difficult than I expected, but totally worth it.
Lots of peaks and valleys to new homeownership so hang in there but I loved seeing you in an up week! Congrats on the progress, can't wait to see more.
totally. thank you!
There’s no better feeling then that sense of accomplishment of being able to do something yourself! Good job!!! You can “wash” (for lack of a better word) the garbage disposal with vinegar and baking soda.
I will do that... a couple times lol
glad to see you in good spirits again. take it a day at a time :)
💕
The epitome of homeownership:
"Ew WTFFF!"
"Ugh..."
"How much?!"
"WHY DID THEY DO THAT?"
I am a new homeowner too! I would recommend getting a warmer white rather than a colder more grey color to bring out the warmth in your home! I had grey and it really made me sad over time
Glad to see you more upbeat. It'll all come together ☺️
last week was just really rough. Everything is feeling better these days!
Hi Aja, about the cupboard you organized, with the adjustable shelves: you might want to switch from plastic supports for the shelves to metal supports. When I bought my house, the kitchen shelves had plastic supports, and one day they broke and my dishes all came crashing down. So I bought metal supports and those have been fine. I think I got them at Lowes. Also, super impressed with your home improvements! Way to go!
that's a good tip. I'm already starting to see the plastic ones break. I didn't know they had metal options.
Highly recommend getting a box of disposable gloves for DIY projects like this. I do a lot on my own too and I’m down as long as I don’t get my hands dirty.
yes, that's a great idea. I've had to throw away two high quality dish washing gloves to gross home reno projects.
Lol you are so cute 🥰
You have a childlike innocence to you that makes me want to jump in and help and fix everything for you. Mind you, I’m a straight girl that needs help myself lol 😆
That feeling of doing something yourself!! I am a first time home owner too and am going to paint my cabinets black as well! Our kitchens are similar in size and layout 🎉
have you chosen a brand and color name yet?
Check Black Magic by Sherwin Williams ☺️
@@trueddalgi thanks!
love this. first of all, how cute you carrying arround the doggo :D second: wrap your paint tray in plastic foil (garbage bags are great, as you can use them after for their meant service) and you can use it all time for different colors :)
go girl go!
I recently cleaned all the drains in my apartment. Absolutely gross but I felt accomplished. Definitely check the other drains in your home. Write in your calendar when you cleaned them and try to do it a few times a year just to keep up with it.
how did you clean them?
@@AjaDang Exactly how you cleaned your garbage disposal. Remove the pipes and scrub them clean with a brush and soap. It's pretty gross the things you find in those pipes, especially if it's other people's grime. You did the kitchen sink but it's probably a good idea to check the bathroom sink and even the bathtub if you have access to those pipes. Congratulations with the new home and good luck with all the repairs 😊
line your paint trays so you can reuse them
Paint recommendation: Sherwin Williams Greek Villa Soft White Paint! If your looking for a warmer white
I'm also buying tools coz I want to start learning how to DIY stuff and how to fix things myself.
This is a skill that should also be mandatory in life.
You are inspiring me to actually do the home owner stuff I've been avoiding.
Hey Aja, would you be open to making a budget video about renting an apartment and or buying a house with your partner and how you saved and split/shared expenses. :)
We literally just had to do the same thing with our disposal. It was GNARLY.
Also great job on painting!
how did you clean it?
I like to use hardware stores apps to place pickup orders and search items for exact aisles.. and do keyword searches hehe
that's a good idea.
Am I weird that i wanted to see Aja clean the dirty pipes 😂😂 I was laughing from her grossed out comments, it makes for good wholesome content 😂😂😂
Did you guys buy flood insurance? I read a lot about certain areas in Houston suffering from horrible flooding in their homes but idk what area you guys are in or if that would impact your neighborhood
yes, that was a requirement in order to get a mortgage.
your contractor told you can paint the pressure treated wood in a month? might want to look into that. it takes longer than that for the treatment to cure.
I see your Ryoko Rain shorts 👀
yesss on the gold/ maybe brass hardware for the cabinets!
I think that would look so nice.
❤❤❤❤
Girl, Facebook market place and garage sales are lifesavers when you first move in. You will be able to get home basics for cheap like tools, ladders, wheelbarrow, etc!
You’re hilarious!
Simply just curious, Why didn't you buy a new house instead? With the price you bought this house you could have bought a new one in houston.
a few reasons: 1. a lot of the new builds we saw were townhomes, which are very popular in Houston and we didn't want a townhome. 2. bc even with the new homes we would've had to make major upgrades. The "trendy" decor in Houston is very dated/ugly to me. And it's also important to realize that new builds are not without their issues. I have many friends who have spent a ton of money fixing new builds that the developer or contractor didn't do correctly.
oh, sorry for the second post..(I tried to reply to my first post but had an error)..I highly recommend paying someone to make sure the vent on the microwave (venting the stove) ventilates OUTSIDE of the house & not recirculate inside of the house...worth having the cooking smell leave your house rather than stay inside your house :)
seems my first post went poof......fb marketplace will save you a bundle (such as for your ladder)
yaaa. I didn't know that could be an issue.
@@AjaDang yeah, recirc works (as long as you keep that filter clean)...but once you have a place that vents the stove outside of the house....wow, can't go back....oh, also..keep the filter for the HVAC changed on time (it's cake work, but important) and find a good hvac person to clean it yearly but watch out a lot of companies want to SELL you a new one b/c yours is "broken" or "unfixable"
Is Brian away? Is that way you doing these tasks yourself? Kudos
he's in Korea for work
OMG! I could send you 10 Allen wrenches and still have too many left.
Even when unplugged I can't put my hand in the disposal so I almost always get someone to help. I just have an irrational fear of it springing to life.
totally understandable!
Signs you're married to a Filipino: Knorr Tamarind Soup Mix for Sinigang lol
Il buy you a brand new house in anywhere in the states
never have to worry about garbage disposals again 😂
I would’ve bought a nephew garbage disposal 🤮🤮🤮🤮
You got screwed on that house. Sue
That employee was dumb asl. How did he not know there are multitool kits?
Home inspector and buyer are both incompetent
Hopefully next week, we will be home owner for the very first time ! We actually bought an apartment 4 years ago but I feel like buying a house is different, we have a lot to renovate but we can't wait to begin !! Thankful for all the tips on the internet 🥹
congrats!
