Yes, but it seems that the visual environment is so captivating to everyone watching, that it almost seems is if there were no other choice but to include her. Everyone wants to know what she was thinking. But yes props to the director for letting her the space to express her talent, and explaining it afterwards. I wish that in the future, more art directors, graphic designers and others will be even more recognised for their work.

The fact that the writer/director wanted to cast people "who are not as well known", and how successful this show is in the west, shows that you don't need big-name, globally popular actors to make a good movie/show, you need good directors and actors that can play their role really well.

The ones I personally know would be: The Running Man and The Long Mile (first one an actual movie, second one a book, both by Richard Bachmann AKA Stephen King), The Hunger Games and Japan's Battle Royale. I think there's a few more for sure. And if you want to scrap the bottom of the barrel, there are ancient traditions of survival games in history, like the Aztec's Flower Wars and the Calcio Storico (which is one of the origins of modern day soccer).

His motives for going back in the game at first are understandable but it’s his character wanting to stop the game forcing him to go back in the end that was horrible. I wish he had chose his daughter. His daughter is another example of his heart being in the wrong place. All he had to do was buy her chicken, instead he felt the need to gamble regardless of the risk because he wanted to give her something more when that’s not important. To me when they show first starts you think he’s a low life leech but as the episodes pass I realized he’s actually a genuine dude, his priorities are just out of wack because he’s focused on things that don’t and shouldn’t matter. Also he couldn’t have sacrificed himself for her, she knew she wasn’t going to make it and was already weak from her injury. Sang-woo would’ve killed her in the final game anyway (if he hadn’t killed her overnight) so his sacrifice would’ve been for nothing.

It's difficult tho think such things.
The whole series filled with symbolization.
The rides in park, so big, which showed how a small kid will feel coming to the park. The doll, looking so sweet and not deadly just how kids play with but is deadly.

He tried so hard to restrain from his emotions and feelings. That's why Ali's death broke him the most as Ali is the perfect angelic figure that is everything opposite to him. It's like, even though Ali, who is not smart and with lowest social status, chose to be hardworking and kind. That earns Sang-woo's respect and envy while he tried to cut off human feelings. Eventually Sang-woo killed him and condemned himself as the definite evil in his mind.

I think the most realistic character in squid game are Sangwoo, Ali and Gihun.
Sangwoo represent people who is smart but still can fail in life. Ali is that person who is always willing to help and kind but people around him will use that kindness to backstab him just like how people said that in this cruel world we dont need to be too kind coz people will take advantage of us. Lastly, Gihun represent a person who isnt perfect and street smart but despite his imperfection as a human, a son or as a father, he still had humanity in him and you see how his character develops per episode same as the other characters as well.
Btw after watching SG, i watch Gihun's movie 'Deliver us from evil' and im shookttttttttt

The years of failure he’s had regarding money is the main driving factor in him wanting to win the game. He wants to be successful for once in the gamble he’s made in his life. He does everything to win that money, but in the end he couldn’t kill gi-hun because he came from a time before all sangwoos money failures began.

Whenever you have a death game show, you always have a few edgy people in the comments section saying "will if *I* was in the games, I wouldn't hesitate to sacrifice anything or anyone to win." Song-woo is *exactly* this kind of character, and not only that, but we see his character develop into the series' surprise villain.
As a financial analyst, Song-woo only cares about the money. Over the course of the games the prize money becomes his obsession and he sees the other players as nothing more than statistics. In his mind he's just doing whatever he needs to win, but from our perspective as viewers we see how monstrous he becomes. It starts with him wanting an all-male team for tug of war, which isn't necessarily a bad idea, and ends with him killing Ali, the glass manufacturer and the North Korean girl in cold blood to get closer to the prize money..
And in the final game we see where this mindset gets him. He could have chosen to end the game with Gi-hun. He could have gone home with his old friend, seen his mother, and tried to pay off his debt. But he only sees the money, so instead he chooses to sacrifice himself to force Gi-hun to take it.

This is what Martin Scorsese meant when he said the trend of action, superhero movies is taking away from a cinematic experience, not dissing it but simply stating that the art of making a story has turned into a spread sheet of how many movies can we utilize this same formula with until the next phase?
Squid Games as a series, takes care of itself. These actors are well informed of their characters and story, and they worked close with the art director to make sure things were rightfully executed, where Marvel actors are entitled to portions of a script and left clueless as to what may happen next. The tiniest things to even having a fraction of an outtake make it in a movie, it's refreshing to finally have an original story that takes you in many waves of emotion.

    • @jackriver1999
      @jackriver1999 Před 2 lety +4

Totally agree about the pure cinema experience being lost. The same criticism can be levelled against films that heavily rely on CGI action sequences to the point of parody (Transformers, Fast franchise). Squid Game is a refreshingly brilliant change.

He also has “City of the Rising Sun” (1999), “Assassination” (2015) and “Deliver Us From Evil” (2020) under his belt where he won multiple best actor awards.
