- I've discussed a bunch of drama where GNOME was absolutely at fault, however in this instance GNOME is absolutely in the right and this drama is complete nonsense

This drama seems like a 4chan prank to see if they can get it changed lol
Lmao Fr im like no way this is real lmao
Funny that, goatse is well known BECAUSE of old 4chan
I was thinking "4cuck moment 4cuck moment" the whole time
goatse was proliferated by old 4chan
it's very possibly 4chan's fault
We need 4chan squad to make Gnome implement server side decorations and other protocols.
reminds me of the fake troll acount that got the christmas eastereggs removed from VSCode😭
this is just far-stretched issue
Clever!
Mind blowing!
Some people get too anal about these kinds of things.
the plant isn't centered in the circle.
you're welcome.
Edit: others pointed out that the stem, leaf, and ground also aren’t centered.
I hate you
That was the first thing I noticed about the logo and I felt so smug while Brodie was explaining the situation. I was just sure someone with OCD started a big fuss about it. My jaw dropped when he said what the issue actually is.
tbf nothing is
The plant is off-centre to the circle AND the dirt!
the dirt isn't centered, the stem isn't centered, the leaf isn't centered. the two hands were tho, which is nice 🙂
i'm saying this just with my eyes, not by measuring pixels (and i shouldn't anyways)
It's funnier that they actually changed the logo because of it. Can't wait to tell others that GNOME changed one of their logos because it looked like goatse.
GNOMEse
That's a giant failure for them. They should have told the guy to seek help and f off, not falling for that nonsense debate over the logo looking remotely similar to some guy doing G-ymnastics. It wouldn't get traction without devs reacting to that, but now everybody knows that and no, pulling one hand out of it won't help
It’s the Streisand Effect.
I dont know what is goatse but i know better than to ask. I only know that I probably dont want to know. Sincerely, your millenial boomer.
Edit: GOD DAMMIT, HE SAID IT IN THE VIDEO 😂
I mean in terms of things emerging from the lower digestive tract, wouldn’t the logo be more appropriate for Snap than for Flatpak?
Ok who the hell looked at that logo and thought "yeah that looks like that"

@@excidium_ or touch grass.
@@excidium_ I saw the image when it was popular, I still think it doesn't look like the Gnome Circle logo
Yes, as someone who lived through that era I am constantly seeing goatse everywhere, however seeing that in this logo is **puts on sunglasses** quite the stretch.
Ba dum tss
YEEEAAAHHH
Brodie missing a drama is more dramatic than the stupidity of this discussion, lol
"Having actually fisted people, I don't see it"
That was not on the bingo card for Linux desktop environment drama, but i guess life is just full of fun little surprises isn't it
I've been terminally online since the 90s. I've experienced the original first hand, as it first went viral, along with all sorts of other nonsense that never really made it into the long term ecosystem. I didn't see it. What a spectacularly dumb thing
Samesies.
The first thing I did when I got a 3d printer was make QR code coasters that redirect to a re-upload of goatse
Same
The logo looks more like tub girl than anything else.
logo always gave me PTSD. I didn't know it wasn't done on purpose
The hands AREN'T even the right orientation! They shouldn't have given in.
Calling the logo offensive is a bit of a stretch.
I see what you did there lol

And I thought the GNOME Circle logo looked like my parents fighting
Nah!! It looks totally like a bicycle hanging in a garage!🧐 Wow!🤯 You have a bad case of Pareidolia!! 😅

I think it is a new desktop environment
It is a kernel module. You can use it directly or through GrassWire daemon, configured using 20 environment variables, normally set by systemd via PAM when it signals it over dbus. Other option is to use tgrssd and accompanied tgrssconfd, both requiring config in /etc/stone (named that way for historical reasons).
Gotta be a new systemd replacement, I guess.
Big L for GNOME. Devs should've just told everyone arguing such a thing to f*ck off and touch some grass, and call it a day.
A popular podcast I listen to has recently started bragging about not being on social media anymore. I'm starting to see their point.
The same terminally online people are gonna see a certain salute in the new picture

OH NOO 😂😂😂
Wake up, honey. New Linux community trolling just dropped.
omg...
You should file the bug report now, get out in front of the trend.
I've been on the internet since I was a little girl and when Brodie showed the two-hand logo I immediately knew where this was going, but only because I had the context that there was drama.
Without that… it's a cute logo, two hands or one, and it's reasonably descriptive
I've been on since the early 90s and thankfully I missed goatse. Now Brodie has destroyed my remaining innocence.
Even the single-hand logo made me think of goatse, but I've never seen that logo before. The first time I saw it was in this video.
So it's quite possible I only saw goatse because of "there's internet drama about this logo".
The two-hand logo, though, I honestly think I might've thought of goatse, just as a chuckle. Not sure, though.
@@Acorn_Anomaly for me it was knowing about drama probably. It clicked immediately after I saw the old logo, but I didn't know it's called goatse and I have zero intentions of knowing why it's called that.
Why is the logo not one (or two) cupped hands, like they already are, but at the bottom, “holding up” the pile of dirt with the sapling, that would still have the same implications of the “protecting” hands, without it looking like *that* image
Oh thank god I'm not the only one.
This needs to be assigned a CVE because it's unsafe.
CVE-2024-6969: GNOME Circle logo is not safe for work. CVSS Score 10/10
6:41 Those hands look like the fingers are broken.
Issue #51: Your logo is ableist
Well, there is two things on this:
1. They look defensive, like rejecting the plant
2. Or some greedy hands trying to get it.
like both hands got smashed with a hammer, lol
I got blindsided when i asked my partner if he saw anything wierd in this logo ( hes not techie at all he has never seen this logo) and he said goatse the first thing he said. I am floored. Maybe its actually good that they changed it. It might be akin to the "amongus" meme where just the abstract is enough for people who were around when this shockimage went around? I dont get it at all but then again i didnt look at goatse.
Similar to Loss
Embarrassingly, saw it right away. I touched grass this afternoon, so... I think I'm good!?
@@lucyinchat The memetic? Yeah once you see it, you can't unsee it.
I think what Brodie, and several other people, are missing is that when goatse was popular, part of the popularity was hiding it in joke logos for things. I remember seeing TONS of fake products and made-up companies that had logos that were similar to real life product/company logos, but modified to resemble goatse in one way or another. There was even one on CZcams by Ashens called 'Through the Tech Hole', and in _that_ example it's not even hands - just a more abstract 'circle with things on either side that happen to look almost sorta like fingers'.
As a result, there are a lot of people online who were subconsciously trained to see goatse in logos, and the fact that this Gnome Circle logo not just had a circle and some things on either side, but said things were _actually fingers_ is what really made it 'on the nose' for me.
I see a lot of people in these comments saying it was too subtle and that they didn't see it even though they knew the context, and in my opinion that has to only be because while they might have seen it and were aware of it, they hadn't noticed just how pervasive that meme was. If they failed to notice how often joke logos were made to look like goatse back then, of course they wouldn't notice it now.
@@Tynach ... yes! Like the ASCII version. 👀

The new logo looks like a hand getting ready to slap a poor defenseless plant.
It had it coming. /s
Or try to catch a fly off it! Possibly with the intention of eating it! 🤮🤢 Gnomes are gross and nasty!
inb4 new merge request to make it just the damn plant
@@inderix Now KISS! /j
On the one hand, no, the old logo didn't really look like goatse. On the other hand, as soon as Brodie mentioned hands plural, I thought "oh no, I know where this is going". I can definitely see why the terminally online would make the comparison. Some things are burned so thoroughly into the Internet's consciousness that they assert themselves at the slightest provocation.
Same. The moment of "plural" my mind did the "no... noone would complain about THAT, it would be ridiculous... right?.. RIGHT?"
It ended ridiculously indeed.
they should have doubled down and added the ring
Can we just realize from a human anatomy perspective the thumbs would be upside down if the logo actually looked like it....
Dude this is the thumbs up version.
@@JerehmiaBoaz you right brb gonna practice this one.
The logo is from the inside perspective
This has been done many times. As time goes on, people have had to get more and more abstract to slip their homages into the mainstream.
I have zero doubt that this icon was an memetic homage.
The moment you showed the logo I knew exactly what this was about
I thought they would argue gnome is creating a cult because the hands are protecting the plant that should represent the gnome ecosystem 😅😂
I guess my reason to go touch grass is too much overthinking lol
Now it is the single-handed goatse
Looks like someone about to slap his woody at a butt hole now.
Maybe it was drawn with one hand, too. Must have been hard.
I'm also terminally online, and the moment you showed the logo I started chuckling because I knew exactly where this was going, and I was right.
That "open wide" at the end caught me off guard
Gnome Circle logo looks like Goatse?
That’s a bit of a stretch.
This is like looking at clouds and using your imagination to fill in the blanks. Except more cursed (and stupid).
My recommendation: put the hand below the dirt so it looks like the hands are holding the dirt and the sapling and it won't look like anything except peaceful nature stuff the original logo tried to aim to create the feeling of. It might look like generic for some but this will definetly improve the logo.
THIS. 100%
Alternative suggestion: one hand holding up the dirt and another over the plant
You won the thread, my friend.
i feel like it would increase the "problem"
Thanks for calling me insane. The moment you said "hands" I knew what this was gonna be about.
Dude same! It almost feels like a virtue signal that "I'm so not terminally online and juvenile that I can't see it".
Bro the second the second hand appeared I busted out laughing so hard.
same. as soon as i saw the two hands i couldnt stop laughing bc it was the first thing i saw. i dont know how anyone CANT see it!
as the other reply said, it feels a lot like just a virtue signal.
This is not drama, is nonsense. Trolls getting away with it? Because normal people don't have that mind....Now it looks completely unbalanced.
The troll was the one who designed the initial logo. Well played wherever that was.
That logo didn't make me think that... its a case of a "that's on you moment"
i knew what it was immediately
i genuinely feel sad for you
@@linuxization4205 things looking like goatse is a meme, similar to the “loss” meme. people have made this joke about certain video game controllers and stuff it’s just a meme lol
I was not prepared for the direction this video took
I saw it immediately. There's two big blunders that a lot of people learning logo design encounter: "Accidental swastika" and "Accidental goatse". It's so common that that in itself is a meme now.
This drama says a lot more about the people who complained about the logo than they may realize.
I saw it immediately. Can confirm, not functionally normal.
and you can never make me touch grass. I refuse
The odd artwork of the hands is actually a call out to "Mr hands"
That one marked as sensitive kind of just looks like the hands are threatening the poor little sapling.
Honestly, for their new logo they should make it an abstract "Loss" image instead. Switch one for another.
i need this
When I saw the original logo, my first split-second thought was "Of course it's goatse." At least I'm glad I'm not the only one.
i knew immediately what it was going to be when you said there was originally two hands...
Yeah, I don’t know about goatse but when he said that, I started to see what it might represent as well 😂
The real drama here is me having reached my forties, having been in the CS space for way more than half of my life and having NO F***** CLUE WHAT GOATSE WAS. My life is a lie.
Someone has to say it...
The hand isn't removed, it just went fishing
Ngl when you showed the original logo it clicked for me and instantly saw it
6:58 - My dysfunctional self IMMEDIATELY noticed it the first time I saw the old logo.
8:03 That GitLab image diff viewer is a "spot the difference" game because it cannot highlight changes XD
the moment i saw the logo i thought of goatsy
Once you said there were two hands I knew what it was all about, but I honestly couldn't care less and by modern standards of quality in memology, I would hesitate to even joke about it publicly, bc it would ruin my reputation of a self-taught comedy engineer and significantly lower my chances to reproduce.
That's a no-no. The only right answer was to cut it off and insist on perverts being perverts and logo staying the same until its next planned revision.
I just think the logo kinda sucks, but I agree its far from being what some people were complaining about
Time to make a userscript that has a 10% chance of replacing the logo with "the real deal" every time the page is opened
Subliminally message the real deal every time, show it just one frame and cover it by the logo.
07:42 "old white men" - Kinda lost on how the amount of melanin in one's skin has anything to do with literally any of this, but okay. Racial stereotypes FTW I guess... It's a messed up world we live in.
I did immediately think of goatse too, can't help it
... i like the one hand logo ... i'm a fool ?
Nah, I agree. It may be because I saw that version first so have some familiarity bias, but I still like it more.
Nah, it's alright
Their logo prototype have some resemblance to the goatse image, but their old official logo can only be recognized as goatse by someone or something that does not know how human hands works.
The whole situation is silly but TBH the new logo is better. The two hands were visually forcing symmetry which a) there's already enough of in the circle and b) that clashed with the asymmetric plant. You really don't want anything natural to be symmetric (or, for that matter, centred) so only one hand is a good solution.
ok internet ruined me, as soon Brodie said the drama was about the logo I went directly to goatse, going out to touch some grass....
I had finally totally forgotten about goatse ... the logo did not remind me of it either. Now the pictures are back in my head for another decade, and no logo change can fix that ... :o
I do landscaping so I touch grass for a living. Every day I touch grass. Grass in face, my hair, my eyes, my shoes, my shirt, my gloves, my bed. Every inch covered in grass. Also I use arch btw.
ok, after watching, I know the image of course, but I didn't get it until you said it lmao. The grass makes me invincible, you were right Brodie.
At first I thought the logo looked like some hippie bs but otherwise good. But as soon as you said goatsee, I flipped to thinking it absolutely does and they should probably change it.
as you were building up to it I actually thought you were going to say "this person slipped this logo design in here as a nod to goatse and now people are upset"
French here. Well - at least I learned a new word… Had to google for it, not sure how my ads will look like in the coming days 😕
I still can't see it, not even after it got mentioned.
I worked for a website with a title/tagline that included the word "analysis." We received several complaints a week from people complaining that the word was truncated to "anal" in the browser tab if the tab wasn't wide enough to fit the whole tagline.
Never heard of this drama but the moment he showed the original logo i immediately knew and laughed. I am terminally online.
The only thing I can think of the change actually happening is April fools prank.
I don't think it looks like what they say it looks like. But the moment I saw the old logo I knew what the issue was going to be, so it's not entirely without similarities.
"stupid" doesn't even come remotely close to describing what this "drama" is...
Don't look at the whiteboard. Don't look at the whiteboard. Don't look at the whiteboard.
I looked at the whiteboard 😭
I've never seen 'goatse' and, by the sound of it, I don't particularly want to. It may have been a better solution to change the 'concentric rings' aspect of the logo, rather than the hands as a single hand just looks unbalanced and a bit silly. A fade instead of concentric rings would work, otherwise just a very simple solid circle would be better than a single hand.
About a second after the old logo was on screen I realized exactly what the issue is.

We did it internet. We reached the very last entry on the world's to-do list and fixed it. There are no more wars, no more hunger, climate is fixed and everyone is happy.
6:38 This logo looks totalitarian. Like rows of military officers (the hands) saluting to the leader (the sapling).
Yeah! Or magical? Like the hands are conjuring the sapling lol

Man, I was a forum mod helping clean up after the board got hacked to include a goatse redirect in the forum template. I saw so many gaping anuses that night.
The logo doesn't look like goatse guy, and anyone that sees it is obsessed with seeing it in places it isn't.
Seriously ? I thought at first that it might be because the hands might resemble to some angel wings .... Just swap both hand and you might get something like that...
Even after learning what people thought seems weird to me because the angle of the hand don't match at all, for me they really look more like angel wings than what some people think
Gnome Organization As The Superior Example
I am so happy that I did not see goatse on that logo.
I'm familiar with the photo in question and that logo does not remind me of it.
I saw it before you said what the controversy was, but only as “oh do people think it looks like goatse?”. I would never have thought of it without knowing the one hand version was the solution to a controversy.
Image on the board took some time to be noticed. :D
First I looked at it and seen a normal logo of something like nextcloud but with lines. Then I got the context of the conflict... Theeeeen I checked the board again.
Brilliant. :D
Maybe the video is already in the works but I think the NixOS drama is far more important. This video feels like it was a, "I don't have anything else to cover so might as well do this," kind of video. It's like seeing someone call it a slow news day and report, "Dog bites person," while not covering the burning building right behind them.
Oh what if it was a hand with a match lighting the sappling on fire? Then we definately wouldnt see some ancient internet meme.
Definitely doesn't look like goatse. You only see that if that's what you want to see xD
That said, the single hand is, imo, at least aesthetically equal or even slightly better. The single hand creates the image of a candle (one hand holding and one hand shielding), as if to suggest that GNOME and GNOME Circle's enlightened design philosophy illuminates the rest of the computing world. And since it was asymmetrical to begin with, no reason not to lean into it.
Honestly when I 1st saw the logo (on this very vid) I thought it was gonna something about gnome being pretencios (someone tell me how to spell that, spelling options didn't list it) or something. Figured it would be something to do with the hand existing at all, I mean what is gnome actually shielding them from? If the hand had been holding a watering can then yeah, would seemed about right.
If you are unaware of the image, that is a good thing, and you should try to stay that way.
I like the version with one hand better, it balances out with the leaf on the right side of the little sapling, creating some nice symmetry.
I can see the resemblance between the famous picture and the logo but even if it looked extremely similar I don't see why you would change the logo for that reason. Again I do prefer the new one though.
I immediately saw where this was going when you said people had a problem with the logo.... internet has ruined me. but even someone that could see it, I believe it's a stretch (no pun intended)
I’m literally a GNOME Circle dev, and had completely missed this discussion. To call it a drama is quite an exaggeration. The change happened quietly without really any fuss around it.
Although I get the use of that term for the algorithm of course.
The drama was the people complaining about it in the first place, it certainly wasn't serious in the project itself
I'm familiar with said picture (it was the rickroll of the late 90 early 2000), I can't see it, and I'm trying VERY VERY hard to.
The comparison is apposite because it's not just the composition of its visual elements, it also speaks to something sinister in the suggestion that Gnome are going to be sheltering teams of developers like little flowers. It punctures what's wrong with the business model. Just as the goatse meme was often originally delivered as the punchline to a set up, or to trick unsuspecting people, this is about implying that developers naively think they will be nurtured when a ruthless business is getting ready to perform a very uncomfortable action to them. There is something offhand, lazy, or sloppy in the original design, in the way it tries to address that concern head-on, and so it deserves this parodic comparison.
I knew of the Goatse image (unfortunately) but I never would have seen the logo and thought of Goatse on my own unless someone mentioned it.
I like the new logo a lot. It has character now and will stand out due to it's asymmetry. (serious)
As soon as I saw the original logo, I knew exactly where this was going.
Should've used a foot stepping over a growing plant
Not only closer to the GNOME iconography but also a good metaphor for the project
god I did not expect that reveal, in crying
