Malaysians, in my opinion, are generally very reserved because we respect others' privacy. We don't intentionally approach strangers with excessive friendliness because we don't want to arouse unnecessary suspicion, but once we're being approached and are aware of their intentions, we can be very amiable.

friendly or not friendly? It depends on who you interview. if he is an introverted person, (whose mind is always thinking of money money money) his answer is more likely similar to the response of the Ipoh Chinese guy. while when you interviewed the cheerful person, their answer would definitely be more positive.

I think KL is very friendly, much more than a lot of large SE Asian cities or most European/US/Australian big cities. People are helpful and willing to engage in conversation, and it helps that most people speak fluent or close to fluent English. I don't think KL is dangerous, but I did personally witness a lady having her handbag snatched by 2 guys on a motorbike close to the Masjid Jamek LRT station at about 6.30pm. That is the most common crime I hear about in downtown KL.

    • @Chai_Travel

No way Malaysians are friendlier than Aussies. I lived in Malaysia for 20 years, 18 years now in Australia. Aussies definitely more friendly bunch.
Lets say you have a walk around your suburb, they will always say G'day or Hello how are you even when they don't know you, and it's with a smile.
In Malaysia people just walk straight. When trouble happens, everyone just takes out their phones to record.

@@84jordieit’s different imo. I’m Aussie but been to Malaysia a few times, Aussies are definitely less reserved and more extroverted but can also be hostile and violent with very little provocation. I find in Malaysia the people kind of mind their own business abit more but I don’t think that’s necessarily them not being friendly but just more reserved, however once you break the ice pretty much every person I’ve met in Malaysia is very friendly and humble.

I think the second guy took the question a bit literally. Malaysians don't really say hi or hello to other people on the street. That's true. But if u strike up a conversation, people can jump in if they're not so reserved. Saying hi is probably not something we do. But we do respond to random conversations, as long as ur not trying to sell us something! Then we'll ignore u like the plague 😆

In Malaysia, we don't randomly say hi to people on streets. but it is our culture to smile (from the 90's to 00' our government did a campaign (about smiling to each other) and put a skit in our local television asking our nation to smile to each other and then it become's our culture, 'senyum itu budaya kita' remember the song?)

I told her, it is normal feeling as they are far apart. She told me, for few days she here, Malaysians help her a lot. Someone even pay for her grab fee, someone help her to buy food as she didnt know the area yet.

If people perceived you as a tourist and not a scammer or a conman look alike, you're pretty well accepted and befriended. They do look at you from head to toe at times not b'cos of your look, your wealth or your way of dressing but just a quick assessment to determine the risk level in dealing with a stranger in particularly foreigner (also depends where they come from like wealthy or poorer country). Generally in the country side, people are much poorer, living a simple life and are more open to stranger and so less likely meeting with someone with bad intention (nothing to take away from them anyway). Just my 2 cents opinion haha.😛

That guy isn't wrong to say it's not in the Malaysian culture to say "hi" on the street or chat up strangers, especially in the city. There's the Asian view that westerners are bold & friendly, so people treat them differently than with locals, so locals may be more willing to say "hi" to westerner tourists. As for safety, I will also agree with the guy with glasses because there have been news reports of "broader crime" & vehicle theft in Malaysia. Also, a Malaysian guy said that if there's a robbery going on, the police will just look the other way. And for public housing, the entire lift carriage is stolen. That lady who said that snatch theft happens "everywhere, that's just your luck".... well, she should travel to other countries where it doesn't happen.
