The Fast Lane Truck So, now we know that the EPA does a lot of “copy and paste”, Dodge kept quiet about it and GM owned up to it...lay-offs to follow...
Ps. Based on a few of my friends experiences over the last 20+ years...I wouldn’t buy a Chrysler/Dodge product on a bet.
Talk about disappointing on your new Ram purchase! Sorry guys. I say return it and get the Trailboss

Fast forward 5 years "a limpy 600 hp engine, mated to a 28 speed automatic transmission"
more like 20 hp electric with no driver inputs
I'm not buying until they come out with a 666 speed tranny!

Hemi = she has a drinking problem but i love her
Isn't that truth. Edge tuner and Pedal Commander put smiles on my face on a daily basis.
@khronosfateless We have a 4Runner and love it. I was going to buy a Tundra but they do not make the CrewMax cab with the 6.5' bed which I had to have. My Ram has been great so far but I have piece of mind with the lifetime warranty. It's no longer available though.
Its not a hemi tho lol it's a dual wedge. And is actually a surprisingly efficient head

@khronosfateless The funny thing about that is my sister's 2010 Tundra gets worse MPG than my 05 MegaCab HEMI.
I get 16 mpg on my 2018 tacoma with a 3.5l v6, that dodge is heavier, bigger engine, and gets better mpg. WTF Toyota?
Konstantin Malyugin TOYOTA is being bullied into a corner
They have monopolized for too long ... the United States limits the amount of manufacturing facilities in U.S. per automotive brand
TOYOTA is at capacity
Hence why TOYOTA must use Subaru to build sport's cars
Mazda builds the iQ & ia & affordable cars
The diesel option for the tundra couldn't be a TOYOTA diesel because they'd outsell the big3 easily
No1 is gonna buy a duramax or pos Colorado or ranger if the Tacoma or helux does more than a fullsize towing capabilities and OFFROADING is still Toyota quality aswell as reliability!
The big3 cant have that ...
Vw is no w #1 in sales Toyota 2nd & ford tries to stay ahead of kia chevy looses to Nissan but
Those vw diesel engine's that were "tricking the emissions tests" might have been but the average vw diesel driver reported 100mpg or more by the thousands it was SUPOSTA get 83/84 hwy MPG depending on the model but almost everyone saw above 90mpg combined
The government couldn't have this & thus that car was deamed dirty & should be "crushed" & bought back ect
Ill run my 2uzfe v8 by TOYOTA for the 1million miles it will go ... when it goes im sure i can import a TOYOTA turbo diesel engine by then!
Konstantin Malyugin try 91 or 93 octane aswell you will see a 2- 3mpg jump
My FGT first gen tundra 02 4.7L v8 2uzfe 4x4 access cab gets 16mpg with ac on ,on 87 in 122degree Arizona heat
I average 19mpg
On road trips over 150miles on cruze control i got close to 24mpg
@@ilovetoyotatrucks i use 92 octane as that is the highest in the PNW. Got 18mpg on the highway today empty. What a letdown.
Konstantin Malyugin if it's brand new under 75k miles it's gonna get bad MPG all brand new cars get bad gas for those first 50k atleast
Between all the other comments an gearing is where the Tacoma is losing its mileage
Am I the only one that thinks it’s absolutely awesome that a Raptor has those tires the HP and Tq numbers and 4.10 gears and still gets 17-18 hwy!
Curtis D it's a v6...
My thoughts exactly like the chevy has 32s, the dodge is on 33s, and the ford with 35s and its staying up with the other 2 in mpg, k think thats a win for the raptor in my books. Was kinda shocked the chevy on got the 19.2 considering it has a 3.23 rear end.
Good numbers as long as you are NOT in boost!! If your in a headwind its hard to stay out of boost.
That's horrible mpg.
@@Ballista762 for 450 hp and over 500lb of torque along with a big truck this heavy, those are great numbers
These pieces probably get the least views (technical) but are the most impressive/appreciated pieces that bring so much street cred to TFL.
Keep kicking butt guys and thanks for all the information and entertainment!
Scotty Kilmer would say blame Fiat since they own Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep.
Scotty is an idiot.
@@AlvinBrinson How is he an idiot? Fiat is garbage.
@@eliteexposure5594 Just because Fiat is garbage doesn't mean Scotty is NOT an idiot. He's just got Toyota shoved so far up his ass he can't acknowledge that anyone else makes a decent vehicle.
@@claytonroot806 He acknowledges Honda also made great vehicles. Fords, Chevy, Chrysler are all junk, especially now. The majority of American cars break down and have expensive repairs before 150k. Toyotas and Hondas all last well beyond 200k if you keep up with minor maintenance.
@@eliteexposure5594 "Especially now" is the polar opposite of the truth. Ford and GM were trash in the 80s through about 2005. Now they're good. GM and Ford trucks are very similar and both beat anything Toyota has to offer. GM cars are industry average, comparable to Honda - the only Honda that is noteworthy for reliability is the Civic, Honda hasn't gotten worse, but everyone else except Chrysler and Fiat got better. Ford cars are very good, nearly as good as Toyota. But Toyota cars aren't the best anymore, that goes to Hyundai/Kia - actually it's Porsche, but it's not fair to compare them.
Results like this are what moved me from being 25 year Mopar guy to Ford. Dodge just isn't very honest about some important things. And their engineering is quirky AF.
1. Power costs fuel. Whichever of these trucks you hop into and stomp the gas on, fuel efficiency is going right down the toilet. It's not due to brand loyalty, it's due to PHYSICS.
2. so... if you bought any of these vehicles based on fuel efficiency, you bought the wrong vehicle.
3. This is totally the kind of comparison I would do. I'm obsessed with my Mustang GT's gas mileage...
robsolf you should look into buying a Prius. If gas is a big concern
I don't think anyone would buy any of these off-road focused trucks for fuel efficiency. However I do think it is important know, especially if you were thinking the Rebel was going to get 22 miles per gallon and got 17.5 MPG.
@@wantsomemor6513 lmao, you’re welcome to spend more money on gas in your dodge, getting the exact same things as in a chevy. Some business rely on trucks and fuel economy can lead to thousands of dollars of expenses every year, and in a fleet, such as construction contracting where you have a few hundred trucks under the same company, that can literally lead to hundreds of thousands of dollars of difference, and if you are too smooth in the head to understand that then take your money and flush it down the toilet or burn it in the fire because when you buy that ram that’s literally what you’re doing. Either you’re too young to understand or you don’t have a business that requires a truck. Either way, you’re ignorant and if you don’t care why are you watching this video in the first place
@777mikmik honestly I can excuse your mindset if you’re 11 but like god damn, trucks are tools and if your tool is causing unexpected costs, you shouldn’t own that tool. Be my guest though, a 5mpg difference is literally as much as 2 grand a year if you’re driving 30k+ miles a year. I’m a construction contractor who’s in the market for a new truck, I’m about to put a down payment on a 2020 LT trail boss, I have a life outside of contracting and I love to be off road, but I’m also driving over 200 miles some days. If I was to get nowhere close to rated mpg for example 22 down to 17, that could cost me $10 dollars a day, now throw that out over a 6 day work week for 5 weeks straight. $300. that’s a biweekly payment right there, and all because some duche bag up in ram decided to cheap out and not provide legitimate ratings. That could and would effect my business, that $300 could be the difference between eating or not. Lucky to have life handed to you on a silver plater, that’s not how it is in the real world and for some people, $300 can make a significant difference
It's great you guys do these real comparisons. All 3 are nice trucks.
Ron Dail you sir are the best here, real car enthusiast respects all brands you may be one of them, respect 👊

@@TecDLogic contraire my friend. Some car brands are a piece of shit and that's the truth. Car brands shouldn't get respect if they don't deserve it.
eduardo lara your right some are but even tho, I respect all brands
The F150 is 5" wider than the Trailboss, has bigger tires, sits high, and has 95 more hp and averages 1 mpg under it with actual off-road capability. Yeah, Ford is winning.
Gas mileage surely won't make up the price difference.
Xavier McQuiston, the Raptor is also lighter
@Brian Taylor I bet it lasts longer than that etorque
@Brian Taylor Most people dont realize how many Ford and Chevy vehicles today have turbos. I would bet half of whats sold no less than a 1/4. Hell, my wifes escape has them. Turbos are a very reliable system. They SHOULD be considered however a LRU(Line Replacable Unit). At some point they will have to be changed. Must be aware of that and place it in mx costs. The old school push rods are cheaper to maintain yes, but look at the advantages you get with that system. Put the Chevy and Dodge on 35s with a 410 rearend and you will see a big difference.
First generation EcoBoost engines are getting well over 150k on the original turbos. Everyone is forgetting that all of these companies have been working with turbos in their diesel trucks for years and they have the technology to make the turbos reliable. It’s way better than the turbo cars in the 80’s where you couldn’t get 100k miles out of a turbo. Considering the rpms and heat that turbos endure (150,000+ rpms) the reliability is amazing. Yeah it’s an added expense but it’s one you’ll probably only pay once in your ownership, maybe twice. I wouldn’t consider replacing turbos as a real expense concern, even with the high output version.
Thank you for what you gentlemen are doing; this is important for me scene i use the Chevy Silverado for my handyman services. While I like the New Dodge styling; I'm going to stick to the Chevy Silverado. Thanks again for the good work you're doing.
You know whats pretty confusing..... They put all this tech into these trucks to increase MPG over the last 20 years (VV-T, Cylinder deactivation, Turbo, 10-speed transmission, overhead cam, Hybrid Technology, ECO system, Air dynamics, Lighter weight body and frame, etc...) and there basically getting the same MPG has a truck from the early 2000's. Granted that they make a lot more power (100--150HP), but you would think that a consistent 20+ MPG highway would be achievable by now....
The thing is though they make 100-150HP at FULL THROTTLE. In everyday driving they would be using about the same HP, so not much improvement at all for all the tech
Overall, trucks are still heavier than their older counterparts with their required safety systems, cushy interiors, etc. Rolling on bigger, heavier wheels and wider tires. Pick up a 90's F150 with a 4.9, 5 speed, stock height on stock 215's and you can absolutely pull down 20+ mpg consistently unloaded.
My 06 Silverado is getting about 14.5 lol
@@kylesonsalla7620 I was in the USAF/MSANG with a guy whose main ride was a F-150 "Big Stick"; mostly unloaded, he averaged just over 26 mpg between fillups, cruising 75-80 mph. I think that was with the injected Windsor 302 V8. I had an 89 SHO that got mid-28 mpgs between fillups; my car was way faster, but didn't have anywhere near the utility of a pickup.
@@wireflight Wish the Windsor 302 with the auto I used to drive would get that. It would do 8 mpg in the winter and 11 in the summer
I own a 2018 Raptor supercrew. Had it almost a year with about 14k miles. I average between 17.2-18.0 for combined mileage which I am fairly pleased with. It's what the sticker said I should get, plus its about the same mileage I got on my last truck (2012 F150 Supercrew XLT 3.5 Ecoboost 4x2 on stock tires.) I think they answered their own question about the Ram mileage in the very beginning when they said the EPA uses the same ratings as the other non-Rebel trucks with the lower ride height, smaller tires etc. Those additions would certainly effect efficiency and how Ram got away with using those numbers is beyond me. All in all I bet they ditch the Ram for a Gladiator or the Ranger Raptor in the next year or so? I just don't see Roman sticking with the Ram for as long as the previous Raptor unless he's contractually obligated because of the discount he received. Hopefully they negotiated a minimum term/length up front. Maybe i'm just a biased Ford fan?
That MPG is bad but. Don't let this distract you from the fact that Hector is gonna be running 3 Honda Civic's with spoon engines. On top of that he just came into Harry's and ordered 3 t66 turbo's with NOS's and a Motec System Exhaust.

How fast did you go on the interstate? Highway speed limit in Utah is 80MPH while most of Colorado is 75MPH. Colorado River road from Moab is a must drive, very scenic road. Highly recommend it. Good for Chevy to ask EPA to lower their highway estimate!
9:18 That cap-less fuel filler is an underrated feature. 👍
Levi P nah it sucks my car has one and you can only fill it at a gas pump or use two screwdrivers to fill it up with a gas can because it locks shut
Nothing like a $400 filler neck when it goes bad.
19 MPG with 35s and a 4.10, yeah the raptor is killing it. As soon as I get back from Korea, I'm buying a blue raptor for sure.
Miguel Anguiano , actually it was only getting 17mpg but still pretty good . Considering getting one myself.
so you are buying a 70k truck to save 2 dollars a fill up?
New vehicle? Not sure that's a great idea. What about saving for retirement? Baby boomers spent like you're looking to spend, and the effects of this are going to cause a lot of pain for your generation. Here's a very compelling look into the problem: czcams.com/video/5OFaZcC0lRU/video.html
Where did you see 19?
The highway is the only time you're gonna see decent mileage in that truck. As soon as the turbos light up the mileage is long gone.
Let me get this straight, FCA can sell a lifted version of its truck with big off-road tires on it, and still use the EPA numbers for a different truck without a lift and with normal, all season tires? How is that even allowed? It is not exactly a mystery what happened here, that truck should not be using the same mpg numbers as a truck that hasn't been significantly modded for off-road use by the factory.
Epa makes the numbers. FCA doesn't. Up to epa how to make numbers for truck. Doesn't have to be for each model.
Its all in how much money they slide under the table to the EPA. I've yet to find any vehicle live up to the numbers on the window sticker.
The Trailboss and the Raptor were close....Don't make excuses for the Ram when they were using the same source for information as the other two.
But who is the bigger fool that sees these two truck on the lot and thinks it's true? Like some kind of magic trick.
It's because it's classed as an option. Not a different truck
The Ram number at 16.3 is right. I just drove from Denver to Houston in a 2019 1500 5.7l 4x4 and averaged 16.7 per the truck calcs.
Hey I was thinking of getting a new 2019 ram rebel red color but hear many people transmission and shifting issues also camera goes off and on Fiat junk and I want a 2019 raptor but Ford have tranny issues what should I get not keep gladiator have steering wheel loose issue
Adam Kyle Jackson what about a new raptor v6 3.5L 61 dollars to fill up what about gallons like the gas can of 5 gallon how many of those I need to fill up a new raptor
John Mcclane they all have their problems.. just get what you want and hopefully it won’t break down...
Adam Kyle Jackson I can tell you this. You was most comfortable in the ram. Chevy needs to take note on how to make comfortable seats from ram... no comparison..
I'd like to see the same test repeated at, or close to, sea level. You did this in Colorado, mostly above 6000 ft. Air density could have a big impact on mileage.
Lol tommy looks like he’s 5 seconds from freezing to death and Andre is completely fine. I’m thinking this is just like Russian summer!
Wow 😮 the Raptor did amazing with such low gears I ccan’t believe that with big tires and a 4-10 rear end that’s phenomenal!!!!!!
The 10-Speed really helps it out. Low Gears for acceleration, and a triple Overdrive for highway.
ripfletching The Raptor is a 10 speed tranny. The RAM is 8 speed. It's all about final RPM at cruising speed.
ripfletching with tires that big the high gears help the MPGs. Another factor is the transmissions. Also the width of the body helps as well.
Pat MyGroin it’s still amazing about the Raptor regardless
Main Street Customs 33513 Absolutely. If I had the money I'd be looking at the raptor.
I'm loving your guys reviews. No bs.
I'm also going to buy a truck in the next 3 years and weighing my options.
It makes sense to do this review at a gas station, since most of your time with any truck will be spent there. :)
With the recent news of Subaru trip computers lying about the MPG, I really appreciate you guys doing this kind of testing.
I have a 2019 Rebel with over 10k miles... NEVER has it hit 20mpg even when I try 🤬, hope you guys give Ram hell!!!
George best yeah I have a 19 lone star and I get about 15 hwy
I never trusted dodge gasoline don’t matter what
I had a 2016 quad cab express that got 19.5mpg mixed driving with an intake and exhaust on it. My 2018 has AT tires and a 1 inch lift from the factory and it won't break 16.5mpg to save its life.
Why are you guys suprised by worse fuel mileage with added weight and big tires? I had a rental base ram hemi 4x4 for a few weeks and it was fantastic easily averaging over 20 mpg.
Joshua Jeremy not really surprised at all I work oil field and landscaping for while, dodge get the worst fuel efficiency overall I have Ford, Chevy and even dodge.
Good job Raptor! If the raptor had a V8 there is no way the fuel economy would be this good. So that’s why I love the V6!!!
el Caballero agreed! The 6.2 was rated at like 9 and 12 with 10.5 combined! 😂
I have a 2018 Raptor and a 1998 F250 LD. The ‘98 is 1000 pounds lighter and has the 5.4 V8. Max highway is 17mpg combined average is 15.5 mpg. It can tow only 400lbs more, but hauls 1000 lbs more. It takes twice as long to get to 60 mph as the Raptor.
Like them both for what they are designed for...Ford trucks are rock solid!
When changing variables, you only ever change one or two at the most between data recordings. If something changes and you changed too many variables, you just won't know what actually effected it.
The driver can contribute up to 30% difference on fuel economy.
John Jackson they changed drivers.
I have a 2019 1500 with the 5.7 and there is LITERALLY NO WAY to get the EPA rating. I've tried just about everything and I've never been close. You might be able to get 22MPG if you're willing to drive at 50mph, but anything resembling normal high way speeds you are deep into the teens. It's certainly a dissapointment
Ahhh to big young again. Roman is talking about a long day and Tommy looks like he's ready to head back to Moab. You guys have a great channel.
Must be nice to be young. I helped a family member move from Main to Indiana by driving a Uhual. I found out the hard way that I'm getting abit old for alot of driving on very little sleep and alot more stress than I'm used to.And I'm only in my mid40's.If memory serves the last leg was something like 1500 miles. He had alot of drama going on so we didn't get as far as we should have the first day. By the time I got home me and the wife was glad to turn in early.
That's what 5 hour energy is good for. :)
Interesting video. Really like your guys stuff...
Id be pissed if I had factored in fuel economy into my buying decision for the rebel. Sorry but there is no excuse RAM should have advertised it accordingly. Nissan was doing the same thing about 10 years ago posting best case scenarios on their stickers and thus a lot of frontiers, xterras, and pathfinders have found their way to the junker because the fuel economy was no where near advertised.
I had an '04 Frontier with the 2.4 4 cylinder and a 5-speed. That thing was incredible on fuel for a pickup. 26-27 mpg on the highway. Typically around 24 mpg in mixed driving. Exactly what they advertised.
From watching the video, it seems like the OEM’s have no real input on the EPA’s published estimated fuel mileage....
Honestly I’ve always been a GM guy. Just really like their trucks. In today’s world they’re all equal. I mean really they are. Hard to buy a “bad” truck today. I’ve had a 05 06 Silverado which were best looking trucks to date in my opinion respectable MPG. I’ve had a 08 and 14 Nissan Titan. Solid trucks very stout. Horrible MPG. I love the titans and tundras but lord their MPG is just to horrible to own and drive daily. The tundra will stomp most these trucks and it’s because that HUGE 4.32 rear end they use. I currently have a 14’ Silverado best mix of them all in my opinion.
To be frank, if fuel economy is your concern you really shouldn't be buying any of these trucks.
@@AlvinBrinson if you need a truck for work but you also need an off road truck because work isn’t the only thing in life, these trucks are perfect. If you own a business 5mpg can make a large difference, especially if a truck is a requirement. I need a truck as a construction contractor, I’m about to buy a 2020 LT trail boss and I understand the circumstances revolving around higher fuel economy. However I do need the truck to tow a 6000 pound trailer and do trails in northern Ontario. The trail boss compromises on none of these things, plus it gets rated fuel economy. What’s more to ask for, calculated the trail boss will cost me just about 6k a year in gas, with those numbers from the real world test in the ram, I’d be looking at almost 7k, some weeks I can be driving 200 miles a day, that means having a truck that gets rated fuel economy is very important
I always kind of ignored those EPA numbers, just because they always seem to be higher than what you normally get on trucks. I own an old Durango that is rated at 14/19, but I only get like 9/15. I also own an old 5.0 Explorer that is rated at 14/18 but it only gets like 8/13. I usually look at the EPA numbers and subtract 4 or 5mpg, and that is what it usually is. Also, from what I understand about that e-torque system on the Dodge, it isn't supposed to do anything on the highway other than charge the battery.
Why should we care about black plastic engine covers? I want to see brightly colored steel engine blocks again!
some slight effort in noise cancellation? Another thing to take off when you bring it in for repairs to cost you? to look clean and organized? IT'S USELESS MOST LIKELY
Nah it's just for show. You can't tell any sound diff between it being on or off. It's cheap thin plastic.
SteelCity1981 it does dampen sounds.
No it doesn't there is no insulation on any of those covers. go stick a db meter on a engine with the cover on and then off and you'll see that it makes no diff in sound dampening. its nickname is called a beauty cover for a reason, because that's all it is there for, looks and nothing more.
Joseph Rodecker Idk anything but I heard that it's an law in the US and Canada? Something about the size of an engine in certain types of vehicles have to have the covers for some reason. Maybe if a gasket fails it doesn't fling all over the engine bay? I'm not sure. Just what I've heard from a few people who know a lot more about that shit than I do.
Wow, great video and very enlightening. Thanks for posting actual real world mileage data.
Excellent video. About the best real world tests I have seen. You are to be highly complimented.
My current truck is a 2007 F-150 , 4.2 l six, extended cab (no jump seats) currently with 82,000 miles on it. It was someone's garage queen, I bought it a year ago. It had been in one accident, some salt rust under, broken springs and front main seal leak. I have replaced everything under the truck,, balls, calipers, discs, bearings, struts and shocks, tires, wheels,,, only the rear axle remains.
With a full load,, just less than 2,000 pounds,, everything driver, fuel, tools,, everything.. 19.1 to the gallon on the highway. 2,000 mile trip.
If I were a buyer of the Rebel I would be surprised if it had gotten 22mpg - regardless of the EPA. The Chevy has the least powerful engine and the highest gearing so it is not surprising that it got what it did. If anything, the Raptor is the surprise of the group. Buyers of these type of off road trucks are not really looking at MPG as a major factor.
👍🏻
O yes they are. Its off road preformance and mpg as they daily drive it
I’m not sure but i think the Chevy is offered with the 6.2 giving it one of the highest power numbers still with a high epa
@@jakeweber4514 and the 10 speed
Jake Weber you cant get the Trail Boss with the 6.2. Have to go to GMC with the AT4.
GREAT COMPARISON GUYS !! It would be interesting to see if the non-Rebel 4x4 models achieve 22mpg on the highway. If so, then it was a mistake on Ram's part not to have the EPA rate the Rebel model separately. An EPA rating of 18-19 mpg on the highway for the Rebel would not be bad, although the best result the Rebel got in this test was 17.9. I highly doubt it would gain more than one MPG after so-called break-in. I don't think break-in means much these days.
I regularly see 23 MPG on highway with my 2018 Chevy silverado crew.
4wd or 2wd?
21-22 for my 4x4 2017 Silverado dbl cab 5.3L
Big difference in torque and power between the 5.3 and 5.7 hemi. Night and day. I have owned the 3.5 EcoBoost had more power than you needed but reliability was an issue owned a Chevy with the 5.3 engine had to work to hard and didn't have much torque. The hemi in my opinion is kind of in between those.

gobig ( go ugly) silverado is way to lame but ok for 4x4 ing around the mall parking lot yippy
This is one of your best videos, good job
The e-torque system will only help in stop and go traffic, on the highway it wont make a difference. Also give the truck some miles to break in. Love the hand calculated tests love seeing that. Keep up the great work!!!
incorrect. They designed it to supplement cruising power when going up an incline. That way no increase from throttle or a downshift to maintain speed.
@@tbomb887 E torque is only for stop start and to assist when pulling away from a stop, it doesn't help at all at speed.

Soo glad you guys used the same pump. Only other thing I'd mention is to share equal time driving in front of the pack, but that doesn't take other traffic into account
Sorry Roman but you’re crazy to think your rebel will pull 22 mpg, let alone 20. Ram should derate this just as Chevy did.
Bryan Schaffer mine gets 21 at 75mph between Vegas and Oceanside. Every time. 9k on it.
My 2010 1500 gets north of 20 at 55-60 all day. Come over ill show ya
@@phoenix92xdan Same with my 2014. However get it on the freeway running 75/80 mph, and it only gets around 16/18mpg.
@@phoenix92xdan Is that what you call highway speed? You are kidding, right? What's it get at 70mph? 17? 18?
That is very disappointing.
It would be interesting to hear a response from Ram.
The Rebel should have a different EPA rating then a regular Ram.
benjaminwayneb You’re exactly correct. It’s 2 completely different trucks.
It's under 1000 miles trust me as engine break in mileage gets better I got complaints when working at Toyota from customers stating mpg was bad I had to explain it's normal all the time.
afte i raised my truck i had better gas highway milage on my ram ????
and 2019 interior is superior thats what they are betting on
Not bad really, 18 mpg for a truck with 33" tires. About 1 mpg off of the Chevy. That's not going to be a big deal to most people looking for an off road truck.
And this is why I like my old late '90s diesel F-250. With a large camper on the back, I get 18 MPG highway. Empty, I get high 20s. Yeah, diesel costs more, but not *THAT* much more. And I can get biodiesel blend for much LESS than gasoline.
It definitely doesn't ride as nice as those new trucks, though.
Hey, those numbers look pretty good to me considering my 2003 F150 5.4 running on 35's get about 10-11 mpg combined 😂
That Raptor MPG is amazing for the tire and HP and Torque it has. I want one!!
I owned a 2016 Ram 1500 4x4 Lonestar for over a year. Had it on numerous road trips. The thing never averaged close to the EPA ratings. It averaged about 3mpg less. Although on the highway it would reach over 20mpg, no etorque, no nobby tires or lift though. I think the main reasoning was mine had a 3.92 rear end. I noticed the mpg ratings at the dealerships for other Ram's were the same regardless of which rear axle ratio they had. So perhaps that's what's throwing the numbers off for the Rebel? I believe all Rebel's have the 3.92 rear end.
I had the opposite experience when I had my 2014. Went on a few 1,000+ mile road trips. Averaged 22-23 going 70-75. 3.21 rear end with Michelin LTX M/S tires.
My 14 average about 20.4 MPG from California to Oklahoma that was a little over 1500 miles 2WD 5.7 Hemi 3.92 gears
I sold Fords for four years and had a chance to talk in depth about the stated mileage verse gear ratio. He stated that the manufacturer can bring the best gear ratio available per spec to get the MPG ratings. So Ford for instance would bring a 3.15 or 3.31 when most trucks had a 3.55 or 3.73. So as they say, “results may vary.”
@@danielslavy6694 Very insightful! Like I said, mine would see 20+ on the highway (EPA rating was 21 hwy) easily, but it was the overall and in-town mpg that was nothing near the 15 city and 17 combined rating that they gave on the sticker. I kept a very detailed and consistent log of every tank I put in the thing and after 25,000 miles, the actual overall average I saw was 14.32 mpg.
I had a 2014 ram crew cab 4x4 with 8spd/3.92 gears. averaged 20-22mpg highway, and about 17 with mixed driving. Completely stock, express model with 20" wheels. My buddy had a 2wd version that got about 2mpg better than mine. i got improved mpg as it broke in also.
if they realize the etorque isnt really for highway speed mpg why do they keep mentioning it... lol
I am wondering how much time the Ram was in the front of the group while on the freeway or if you had all the trucks spaced out so drafting was not a variable for your tests.
Love your videos and reviews.Would be helpful to post results in a simple chart at the end for us memory challenged folks.Thank
I've always thought anything FCA makes as being inefficient. The Raptor does surprisingly well considering it's specs.
As the owner of a 19' Ram Rebel Hemi eTorque 4X4 with 3.92 rear axle, I can tell you not to hold your breath waiting to get good gas mileage. Because it isn't going to happen. I'm down in 'flat country' (Florida), my Rebel has just over 5,000 miles on it now and I drive it like an old grandpa. I've done one round trip from Florida to Kentucky - all highway miles with cruise control set at 70-72 mph. I got 17.5 mpg average between the trip up and down. In the city, the eTorque is actually very helpful. I'm at about 16-16.5 mpg city now and that I can live with. But the highway mileage is dismal, especially since I've been driving diesel trucks for the last 7 years. I absolutely love the truck, but I find it very disingenuous of Ram not to separate out the Rebel 4x4 from the standard EPA rating on the Monroney. First, it's the same old 5.7L Hemi it's always been. If it didn't get 20+ mpg in the past, it isn't going to get it now. You have the axle ratio working against you with the 3.92 and the engine running 300 rpm higher than it would if it was a 3.42 or 3.55 rear end, with bigger, wider, heavier, more aggressive tread tires with high rolling resistence not helping any. You don't have the wind-cheating, aerodynamic assistance from a front end chin spoiler, no radiator louvres that close, etc. etc. The truck will, at best, maybe work it's way up to 18.5/19 mpg if you are lucky.
smartest comment here !
except it's not really Ram's 'choice' to not separate the Rebel on the Label, FCA is just following EPA's rules..
Just curious, why buy a Hemi if you only drive like "an old grandpa"? Why not save a ton of cash and get a 6 banger? I'm not judging, I'm just extremely curious. That Hemi is meant for fun and excitement, and a whole lotta noise.
@@EM-fi2qg The short answer is because I tow up to 11,000 lbs. Not often, predominantly I tow 8-9,000 lb trailer. V6 can't cut the mustard for that. FYI - I have a C7 Corvette for "fun and excitement, and a whole lotta noise" as you put it.
@@SW737Flyer Fair enough.
Thank you for running this comparison. It will be good to see how the RAM does over time, while wearing in. Was tire pressure checked and set to factory recommended settings (for No Load/empty bed & no passengers) when cold, before each leg of the trip? If the tires were aired down (pressure reduced) for better off-road compliance and traction, was it then reset to on-road pressures? Did you measure and calculate the off-road fuel efficiencies?
Great comparison. this was helpful. I love the gas millage stuff.
Keep us posted on any improvements. I don't blame Roman for being upset. It would be different if RAM donated the vehicle for testing. But at the end of the day it's false advertisement. RAM definitely has some questions to answer.
who would be stupid enough to buy a crappy red dodge, of course tfl was given the rebel as a long term promo advertisement, and now they are trying to shove it down everyones theoats, tfl looked pretty stupid here
Raptor all the way, the best truck, no one can beat it even though they could, I don’t care what people say about ford, real car enthusiast don’t curse\mock\insult each other, I respect all brands
I respect Ford and Ram for constantly improving their trucks. The are always pushing forward. I do not respect GM as they continue to have real quality issues.
YOU GUYS ARE GOOD I CAN'T BELIEVE I WATCHED THAT FOR 24.27 MIN.
Is the suggested mpg on the Dodge sticker tested at 55 mph? In your video you said you were doing 70 mph? Could that be the difference in miles per gallon on the Dodge compared to to the Ford and Chevy. Plus different tire sizes and treads?
My Ram has never got 18 mpg as was rated when I initially bought it. Now 10 years later, same 5.7 Hemi and it gets 13 mpg. All Chrysler vehicles I've had never got close to rated mpg. Always off by at least 20%.
My 6.0 Chevrolet gets about 13.5 MPG on average. Long highway trips may go to 15 MPG on flat ground.
Alot better than 97 suburban 5.7 about 7 mpg lol
I just did 500 highway miles in my ram and got 22mpg. Around town about 17 to 19 depending on stops.
@@rigging1377 same with my 2014 sport. 3.23 rear end going 70-73mph with cruise control on wearing bf goodwrench ko2's factory size got 21mpg. Was considering getting the new one with the 3.92 rear end but will stick with the 3.23 rear end. I do want to put 295 60 20's on there though, that wont help mileage thats for sure..
RAM screwed up... no way the rebel will get the same mpg with off-road tires as a RAM with highway tires.
mike hawk
Yep that is very true, I know when I switch out for my winter tires which a just a studless ice tire that my average difference is 1.6mpg less than when I run my normal tires.
@@fordmud you pay attention... not many do... details matter.
Is there really anything Ram can do when it is the EPA number? The EPA actually revised their testing back in the early 2000's because hybrids were getting way more efficiency on the test than in real life. The automakers wanted to correct it, but they couldn't report anything other than the EPA number.
alanhassall
Yes ram could have done something, they cant change the way the EPA does their testing but ram could have submitted the rebel separately to the EPA to have its own ratings instead of just grouping it with the other 5.7 1500s, which is what Chevy kinda did with the trailboss. But since the basic truck is same there is no requirement to have it tested seperatly. Just like a ford xl and a platinum model truck are under the same EPA test without two different trucks being submitted for testing.
@@fordmud the tires make a big difference...
2:40 15 seconds for a 2 second answer. Really good video. Tighten it up.
I had the same experience when I first got my Ram 1500 5.7. I got around 17 mpg until about 10,000 miles. Then it improved to 20-21 on the highway. I did a cat back and K&N drop in filter with a soft roll up cover after about 1200 miles. After about 60,000 miles , the mpg dropped back down to 16-17. Not sure why, I traded out of it before I did any kind of injector cleaning or anything.
Good video!! My 18 Raptor is spot on with the mpg too! Time to trade in for the Raptor gentlemen.
What’s interesting here is how people criticize the ecoboost engines for not being efficient. Here we have a Raptor with a wider body, more weight, 35s and more power coming within 1 MPG on the Hwy to the 5.3L trailboss. The trail boss Silverado isn’t as wide, makes less power, rides on 32s and is lighter. I think the ecoboost should be criticized for the addictive power it has and how it encourages heavier foots lol.
Plus the fact that a lot of Folks refuse to put Premium in the tank( If you are going to do that you might as well buy the V8( Of course I am saying this not knowing whether the V8 requires premium or not) 5.0 good engine. probably as good as LS.
Kevin McCune The regular 3.5L isn’t required to run premium but does run better on it. I’m sure it’s more important or a requirement for the Raptor. I wish TFL would say what they put in these trucks in all videos where performance testing or MPG is tested. Something interesting,0 the 6.2L recommends 89+ or 91+ remember which and the 5.7L Hemi recommends 89+ but they all run comfortably on 87. The 5.0L and the 5.3L are rated on 87 and don’t have a higher recommendation per mfg.
@@JsGarage Thats interesting , that would put the icing on the cake for Me, both of these engines are great( the durability of the LS series amazes Me) and I have nothing but good feelings for the 302, as tempting as ecoboost is , I think you will find some trucks wheezing around with bad turbos, in this neck of the woods back in the day when a turbo went out on a 2.3 or a Subaru, the most common fix was delete. Sort of hope the Ecoboost will not even run with one of the turbos deleted.
Kevin McCune The ecoboost isn’t quite a unreliable as some would like to claim it to. With that said though there are other great choices as well. The updated 5.0L and 10 speed is a wonderful option. The update to the power and the 10 speed really helped wake the 5.0 up further.
@@JsGarage To an old 'Plata" like myself, after driving old buckboard trucks modern V8 power is wonderful( no matter Who produces it )
I bought a 2018 1500 Ram 2X4 5.7 Hemi and it was getting 12 MPG city new. After it broke in at 2000 miles it does around 16 city. I went on a trip from San Francisco to San Diego it did 21 mpg. The mileage will improve. I was devastated when I first bought it the same as you but as I drove it. The better the efficiency. That’s with gunning it every now and then.
excellent bamboo for FCA ,,,great job mika
Par for the course with Ram. I haven’t seen one of their trucks even get close to their advertised mpg. Ram has a reputation for lying about their efficiency systems & this is no surprise. BTW, the RAM I USED to have, kept going down in mpg, vs. going up with break-in miles.
Cmdr Darwin baloney. My 2019 Rebel has 9k on it now and got 21 on each of my 4 trips to Vegas and back from Oceanside.
blueduster74 - I had my own, plus managed a fleet of Ram work trucks. Every single one (both ½ & 1 ton of various years) had a catastrophic or electrical failure & NONE got the reported mpg. We got rid of all Rams. I guess we should have purchased a fleet of Rebels according to you...
Why would someone even think it possible for mileage to go up with break in miles?
Modern fuel injected vehicles are shipped with a shitty one tune fits all engine variance program, then they try to reel it in with closed loop operation, and whatever is wasted gets chewed up by the cats.
Closed loop operation does not occur after break in..... it occurs every time the engine reaches operating temp.... whether it has 0 miles or 100k miles.
As an engine breaks in and the rings seat you might notice a performance increase, but not a mileage increase..... then after that period it's all downhill and called "engine wear" for a great reason..... mileage and performance both taper off eventually.
I won't say my RAM has EVER got the advertised mileage, but then again I am pretty sure all those mileage ratings CLEARLY say "estimated" and are based on "if you are exactly 125lbs, driving at 5000ft elevation, using 5%ethanol, and lightning strikes estimations. Just like a sub amp.... "2000 watt Class D AMPLIFIER! then the little tiny text on the back clearly says "PEAK output 2000 watts @0.5ohms w/15v input" but of course the amp is only 1 ohm stable so yeah you get a cool 600 watts RMS.....lol
If you are upset because you felt cheated by advertised mileage, well I need only say Caveat Emptor :)
@@bobbyd9583 Because mileage increases after break-in. Everyone knows it. My ram got better mileage after 5K or so. I get around 21 highway
No. Just no. Just because you believe it, and you feel everyone else does, does not make it fact. I can assure you that the motor itself is well broken in as soon as you hit the 20 mile mark and ANY improvement in gas mileage from the engine break in would be so negligible you wouldn't even be able to measure it in any quantifiable manner. These are not carbureted cars from the 1970s. They are modern fuel injected cars time's have changed and the age old methods have gone away.
Next you'll tell me that cold air intakes outflow stock air boxes and add 30hp just because the sticker says so.......
NO. If you want to prove to me that I am wrong, start a youtube channel and buy a new car and vlog EVERY fill up and mileage, sadly even in doing so you will just waste a ton of money and prove me right yet again. (Deep down inside, I hate saying I told you so...)
Funny how the quote "old school V8" got the best mileage of the bunch. Hmmm...
Yep, don't fix what isn't broken.
It has the least amount of horse power. Why would you expect anything different.

@Mark Godfrey Wow, someone is salty their brand isn't the best.
It had the least amount of horsepower and torque. It's not really a surprise.
I have a 2019 Lariat 3.5 EB, any highway trip with the cruise set at ~75 mph I see 23+, put it in manual shift mode and keep it in 10th and 24+ starts showing up.
Its amazing how advancement in technology has vastly improved mpg . I have a 1990 Chevy c1500 silverado with a 4.3 tbi Vortec and 3 speed auto trans, Ac, cruise, etc.. with 306800 miles that gets mpg average of 18 mpg.
Oh wait. So all the tech and computers havent really improved mpg? They just make trucks break more and cost more to repair.
But that truck has what 150hp compared to 400+
@@damham5689 either way 280 vs 400hp and you are getting either identical or slightly better mpg than then. And you are also comparing a v6 to a V8 not exactly the same thing. And need doesn't matter in the slightest
@@damham5689 that 4 cylinder is underpowered and moving 6000lbs isn't exactly easy either then that truck from 30 yrs ago was around 4500lbs so again it similar a comparison as you think

@@damham5689 yes you do, I would take nothing less than 300hp in a truck, esp a 4x4. Don't forget, these trucks are huge compared to a 1990 model.
It's understandable seeing the RAM that far off, the Rebel should be rated separately from the rest due to its worse highway performance (being higher, with 33 in tyres and so on). Moreover the e-Torque won't do much at highway speeds, unless you change gears

I wish the two of these companies would make raptor equivalent. The rebel and trail boss just are not a fair comparison to the ford. They are just trucks with a little extra lift and some better tires. The raptor is probably the best and only ford vehicle i would ever buy, the other ford cars are just kind of blah. Ford did a great job with the raptor and i want to see a true raptor competitor someday.
Ram TRX is on the way soon. Center console shifter to.
I agree. There is not a production vehicle out that compares apples to apples. The Chevy and Ram are more comparable to an F150 with an off road package. There is a lack of competition in the market for the Raptor.
If they ever actually come out with the ram rebel trx that would be a competitor
Chevy just figured out how to center the steering wheel in the drivers seat. Give them time, the GM truck engineers are trying their best.
Raptor vs Ram's dedicated 4wd which I think you all know what I'm talking about.
I have a Chevy S-10 pickup that we converted to battery-powered electric--- Sony Pictures did the original conversion, but I bought the truck from them, and did major upgrades on the battery pack, AC motor, and other features.
It now has a right-side hinged truck bed that opens up by a remote control fob on my key chain. When the bed tilts to the left, it shows off the battery pack where the gas tank, muffler and catalytic converter used to be.
Performance is spectacular, and costs nothing for maintenance--- no tune-ups, oil changes, smog tests, etc. There are hundreds of charging stations within 10 miles of me, many of which cost no fee, such as Whole Foods Market, my 24 hour fitness gym, the Dept. Of Water & Power... this country is quickly going to electric cars and trucks. I have been driving EVs for 10 years now, and will never go back to gasoline we buy from horrendous despots in OPEC, or equally terrible domestic Petro Ogres.
Next truck I buy will be Tesla's new pickup EV.
I strongly recommend everyone to take a test drive in any high-performance EV, of which there are many available or soon to be, including the Porsche Taycan, two spectacular Rivian trucks and SUVs, and other ultra high-performance models from Audi, VW, Chevy, etc. There is no downside to driving electric--- ask anyone who has one... they are exhilarating.
In your video, you complain about gas mileage that is sub- 20 mpg... that is monstrous! EV cars and trucks get the equivalent of over 100 mpg, with far better performance---low center of gravity for sports-car-like near-zero body roll and outrageous cornering.
Exhilarating!
Keep in mind if a brake is dragging on any one wheel(s) of any one truck the numbers will go slightly or way off. Same with any mechanical tightness or slight malfunction causing drag. Even a temperature change can affect part sizings and drag on them thereby. Nothing is simple in a complex machine, but it is a fun video to see what the realities of driving these trucks may be.
Raptor has tallest tires, lowest gears, best ride(on and off road), best looks and most power. The fact that it gets 18 mpg is just icing on the cake
As opposed to the 31mpg my 30 year old truck gets? What is your icing made of? Camel semen?
It's almost like why do they keep testing it. Ford already did that's why it cost so much and definitely has the best resale value
Looks is an opinion, but the other facts you stated as a fact. But I do agree that the raptor looks really nice.
@@jameselliott8541 What 30 yr old truck gets 31mpg

To be fair it only got 28mpg before i rebuilt the carb and put the msd in.
Also to be fair, if you were to argue that it isn't a truck I wouldn't have a good retort other than it can no longer hold humans in the back.
Chrysler always lies about their mpg numbers, my wife used to have a Jeep Patriot and we could never ever get it over 19 MPG but they claimed 30 MPG on the highway and 23 in the city, we owned it for 3 years and it never got better... utter garbage.
??? What was your average speed, Average time on road continues driving, and was cruise control used at all. Iv got the 2020 trail boss with active not dynamic fuel control. And did your mpg get better with mileage put on truck
I have a 2017 ram with 3.92 and 5.7. It's 4x4 and best I've ever got was 20 mpg with a tailwind ar 70 mph.
Our experience: Highway/Country road fuel economy for the 2019 RAM 1500 Longhorn Crew Cab 4x4 with the 5.7 L Hemi and NO E-torque, but also with the 3.92 rear axle ratio: approx. 19.1 - 19.4 mpg with 89/91 octane mix. 20" wheels (different more smoother tires than the Rebel), over approx. 1,000 miles, average speed approx. 68 mph with numerous "punch" passing maneuvers. Road trip from Las Vegas to South Lake Tahoe and back to Las Vegas via I-95 in mid-September. At that time the truck had about 2,000 miles on the odometer at the beginning of the trip.
Notes:
1) The truck is very fuel efficient til' about 78 mph. In Utah where there is 80 mph speed limit we found out that by putting the cruise control on 80 mph, fuel efficiency decreased significantly. So set at 78 mph with cruise control on highway/Interstate and using mostly a mix of 89/91 octane of mostly Shell fuel, the fuel economy seems very good for this truck. Anything above 78 mph even if you were allowed to drive faster like in Utah reduces the fuel efficiency significantly.
2) In city driving with stop and go, the fuel economy drops to around 16.4 - 16.7 mpg, even when using a mix of 89/91 octane fuel.
3) Forget using 87 octane fuel, ... the fuel economy will drop and the engine won't be running as smooth and reduces performance. We also noticed that the transmission lost it's smooth shifting with the lower-grade fuels of e.g. 87 octanes and discount fuels.
4) For a 5.7 L V-8 Hemi with the 3.92 rear axle ratio we think fuel economy on our truck is about in line with such an engine and layout. We prefer the brand fuels like e.g. from Shell and Chevron vs. discount/grocery store gas stations simply because of the additives such brand fuels contain and the performance difference. Again we wouldn't "feed" anything less than 89 octanes into our truck, but we wouldn't run it solely on 91 octanes either, so we do somewhat of a mix every other fill up while we usually gas up when we need about 16-17 gallons (approx. 1/3 tank left on the regular-size tank) to fill up the truck. That strategy wouldn't make any sense if you were to let the truck drive til' empty or below a 1/4 tank then you may want to choose consistency.
5) As the OEM hard tri-fold bed cover is not yet available or will become available shortly, we don't have a tonneau cover yet. Based on past experiences a hard tonneau cover should increase fuel efficiency to some degree, perhaps by approx. 0.5 -0.8 mpg or so vs. an open bed during highway speeds, ... we'll have to test it once we get the OEM tonneau cover installed.
Anyway, that's just our experience with this really awesome 2019 RAM 1500 Longhorn Crew Cab 4x4 with now about 5,400 miles on the truck. We opted to have the regular suspension and not the air suspension and overall it still rides better than most $90k+ luxury sedans, ... extremely quiet, easy maneuverable (other than when parking as we need 1 1/2 spaces in length, so we make it 2 as far away from other cars/trucks/SUVs as possible :) ). An unusual experience is that due to still being a rare vehicle on the roadways so far (for the 2019 RAM Longhorn appearance), people frequently look and stare at it wherever we go, especially truck guys :)
@Dale Walker ... that's awesome that you get that kind of mileage with the 87 octane rated fuel. And yeah if you drive 66-67 mph the fuel economy improves quiet a bit, especially if you don't "punch" the pedal too often. We too were driving Chevy's and GMC's for many years as we were kind of afraid of Ram reliability, but this time around the Ram just offers so much more and is a league above in interior styling and quality materials, so luxurious, and the ride is awesome, so we gave it a shot. The 2019 Ram's are really beautiful.
"a brand new engine cover !!" lol, love it.
The odometer mileage can likely be explained with weaving/swerving during travel. With exception of the RAM which was very far off. The only thing I can think of for that is that the computer was never recalibrated for the larger tires from the standard 4x4.
You guys have the best job in America!

I own a 2016 F-150 3.5 Eco-Boost with 3.31 axle, use 87 octane gas and when I changed my motor oil to Castrol Magnetic 5W30 my gas mileage instantly increased to 21.2 from 17.3 and I always measure (everytime I fill up) and use the same gas station, same pump,, with the same gas pump measurement with calculator that TFL uses. I was amazed that a different brand of motor oil gave me a BIG increase in gas mileage. The oil changes before that was done at Ford Dealer. I would suggest to try different motor oils and watch how gas mileage numbers change.
Excellent Test ! Good job, Boys !!! :-)
What you fail to realize is, the testing methods for the EPA numbers
19/22 is probably a regular Etorque hemi with 3.21 gears. Rebel is 3.92 and lifted over a regular ram. It will get worse than a regular ram. Manufacturers don't rate every combination of options. Maybe they should
ForTehNguyen mine is regular e torque with 321 gears and still barely getting 16 mixed. Usually in the 15’s
I get 18.5 hwy and 16+ mixed with 3.92 non etorque, and off road package. I'm sure I could get close to 20 if I drove conservative and ran 65 or so. Eco won't kick in past 68 and I average 72-75 depending on speed limit. I live in a midsize city so the stop lights are not real close and traffic is horrible. I'm assuming in stop and go traffic it would be a lot worse.
*traffic isn't horrible
So about the Trip Computers, have you checked and calibrated the Tire pressure system? Because If the pressure is Off by Just a tiny Bit, the Car will confuse the distance it went, and If they would use GPS/Glonass/Galileo to mesure the distance, they propably Had Signal Interference in you'r Trip, but i would assume that they use the wheel Rotation.

Lamtitude I am right there with ya, I love my 5.0L
Have F150 crewcab as well 5.0 it's never seen 20mpg's in its life . Will pull a house off its foundation but won't pass a gas station
Impressive. That's with the 6sp auto and without DI. That's what I'd do to a 18 5.0 if I get one. My buddy just bought a 2012 5.0 super cab and he gets 18 mpg without even trying.
@@tomjahn6896 !8mpg is not great mpg . I have a 2000 chev 5.3 4x4 ext cab and it would get an honest 24 mpg . Now as stated here my F150 5.0 struggles to get 18 . Bcause Canada here its shows 15kms per 100
@@markbuilt you also don't have nearly 400 hp and tq. There's too many variables.
The drivers can have a lot to do with the MPG, even if they are driving together. Also, if the driver knows their truck, they can really make a difference. With the GM, keeping it in cylinder deactivation mode, with the Ford, stay out of the boost, and with the Dodge, driving to maximize the charging and use of the electrical assist.
Finally, someone who doesn't smack talk one of the brands, just gives honest advice about each one in a way that isn't demeaning towards any of them.
Good job.
