  • In this month's episode of my knitting vlog (AKA knitting podcast) I rant about pattern cutting and the world of hand knitting design, bemoan my painfully-slow-budding project management skills, and read something rather unexpected. My new sweater design is finished! Cloudgazing is a bouclé beast, all sleeves and lots of shaping. Make sure you're signed up to my my newsletter so that you don't miss out on the launch! ➡️ thecrimsonstitchery.com/newsl...
Do you have a knitting problem that you can't find a satisfying answer to? I want to help. Submit your questions in this form: thecrimsonstitchery.com/knitt...
I need your help, too! How you think I should answer these knitty questions? As a separate video? As a segment of this monthly vlog? Something else? Drop me a comment down below!

I don’t know anyone who got through grad school without some mental health struggles. I feel like my program left me incapable of creativity and I was basically eating frozen packaged food because my brain just couldn’t. It was knitting that brought me back to life. You can finish this thesis and you will, and then your life is ahead of you. I think if you can find work that leaves you with enough creative juice to design you’ll be happy. If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend the tv series The Chair.

Thank you...you're totally right. And I love the Chair!!!! It's so accurate in so many different ways.

Cloudgazing is such a delicious burst of colour and shape! You've done a fab job 🧡 I love it when you share your thoughts on books. Having and being had sounds like a great read that i paused the video to go and put in a library hold haha. Wishing you stamina and grit for this last leg of your thesis 💪 you can do it!

    Love your new design.
The color is a 70's memory for me.
    The shape is fabulous.

It's great to see your Cloudgazing sweater "in action," it's really such a fun design! And you totally piqued my interest with this book, I definitely want to read it now.

Love your new design (and the colors/yarn are gorgeous)! That sleeve is just beautiful. I hadn’t watched your podcast for a while and was glad to come back. I loved listening to the reading - the philosophical component - I feel like you are my “academic knitting pal”! 😂 I just purchased the book for my husband - as it sounds like he will really like it - he is a writer/poet at heart (and personal practice) but the dilemma is that he is also business consultant with a lucrative, but dull job. I will read it too, as I think we creatives all struggle a bit with this issue.

😍❤️🧡🩷 mad fuschia and orange sweater!!! I love how bright but low contrast it is. Very pleasing to look at. I had such a hard time with my undergrad, i can't imagine going through post grad. Hope you have a great day and a great rest of the week though :).
I have dipped my toes into pattern designing and honestly kind of hate the hustle that a working artist has to have (sorry if that's a very American expression lol). I just don't have the striving and optimistic work ethic that it requires. It's much more comfortable to sell my labor (luckily to a public university at the moment so not a hideously unethical institution) and having crafts as a fun little hobby.

Craft related activities can definitely run in a cycle and when you’re designing (I really enjoy hearing about your inspiration around your collections BTW) and working on a PhD it’s absolutely normal to feel like you need a change.

I think maybe there's fear for designers in using more complex shaping both fear that they can't design it and fear that knitters won't be able to knit it?
But actually I think if the pattern is well written most knitter are more capable than they would have thought.

Wow that section you read was amazing. It voices so much what I'm feeling now... At almost 50, I'm really wondering why and how creativity is completely disregarded. Concerning mental health, just realizing that knitting and other crafts is a double edged sword... It can help in so many ways, yet can also be a way of numbing it all out. It's so good to know which phase you're in. I love exploring creativity. Thank you for giving me something else to explore ❤

I really like the look of Cloudgazing - I can see it going on my "to knit" list. I'm currently in the middle of knitting Sysimbrium - rather belatedly as I bought the pattern when it first came out last year but I got distracted . . . . I enjoy your podcasts, but try not to overdo it - sounds like you've got a lot on your plate!

I genuinely have no idea how you have managed to do a Phd, along with youtube, along with designing. I would struggle to do just one of those things.

I must admit that it's difficult to balance both designing and CZcams. They both require a lot of time, especially the necessary admin side of things. But it's such a valuable experience to be talking to an audience, and I don't take it for granted, which is why I persevere. I don't know any creative person who can truly manage by talking to a wall 😅

How many chapters do you have in your thesis?
