    Have you knitted what you're wearing? I feel you've already talked about it but I've forgotten 🙈
    End of 17th Century for the Huguenot Weavers, not 16th. Such a fascinating story! I don't know anything more about their refugee status I'm afraid but it would make sense for a Protestant country to welcome Calvinists as refugees.
    Listening to you is always a calming and entertaining experience, thank you!

      I've updated the show notes with some links about the Hugenots in London - thank you for the reminder! Mea culpa,1600s = 17th century CE :) I believe that because they were escaping religious persecution, they are now considered refugees, according to today's terminology. Yes it's a handknitted sweater too.

      Just fyi (and anyone interested), the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre was 1572 and persecution had been going on for a while throughout the 16th century, too, but did continue on for another 100 years and more... The Edict of Nantes in 1598 gave the Huguenots a lot of autonomy, the Edict of Fontainebleau revoked all that in 1685. Violence towards Calvinists was rife throughout the 16th and 17th centuries in (geographical) Europe. Hence the mass emigration to the Netherlands, England, Prussia - and Canada, among others.
      My husband's family began exiting France in the late 1580s and were established in Germany in 1634 - the Prussian king, whose territories had been decimated by war, offered any and all skilled people refuge. He knew the Huguenots were often skilled weavers, clockmakers, gunmakers etc. (artisans of all kinds) so they were welcomed and did well, as a rule.

    I totally know what you mean about opening up to others' destashes! I will ask people for very specific leftovers only, and explain why I want that specific thing. Your art career is so cool. I can relate a lot to your experience of being mixed, people in the US can be quite ignorant.

    I'd love for you to release some simple patterns! I've made too many hats that end up slipping down over my eyes if I try to do work in the garden or go for a hike or something. Thank you for another fascinating episode, Anushka!

    Truly enjoyed your comments regarding work with/on the Traces project. The creation of your own "whole cloth(s)," stitch by stitch, to visually tell your story is really a keen choice, from my perspective. And the topic of sustainability and the use of rubber - the latex farming/rubber plantation impact you mentioned - is sending me down a little online research rabbit hole.

    • @TheCrimsonStitchery
      @TheCrimsonStitchery Před rokem

      Oh gosh the history of latex I've only even recently begun to fully understand. If you research the history of latex from an ethnobotanical discipline it is quite something. Colonialism - deforestation - plantation economy - which then leads to the latex used in communications cables for telegraphs etc., and so leading to even wider globalisation of consumer-capitalism, and further degradation of ecosystems and climate. Cheers, Linda! 😊

      @@TheCrimsonStitchery there’s that saying about pulling on one loose thread and unraveling everything- seems symbolic of humans and the history of latex you outlined… quite sobering. Thanks for your work.

    Really enjoying your thought process about your projects for Traces. You articulate your design process in such clear and intentional ways -- it's just lovely to listen to. Looking forward to hearing about the socks!

    I also wondered about the jumper you're wearing? I don't remember seeing it in your collection before.

    When I make Granny Squares, I try to make myself sew in ends every fifth square then (depending on the square size) I'll bundle/bag them in groups of 10-20 squares. It makes finishing the throw/afghan/other item much more enjoyable.

    Maybe instead of a de stash from someone else you could swap leftovers, specifying what colours you need, then it is win-win! I am absolutely fascinated by people's ancestry and history but very aware that asking about it is potentially a white privilege so thank you for sharing so openly. Question: Where did the Chinese get their red dye.
    Was it from Mexico? Cochineal?
    Seems that is where the European monarchs found it.
