This has got to be the best tip I've ever seen online. It has transformed my scoring, instead of the gentle hook that featured 3 or 4 times a round I now find the fairway off most drives. Straight and accurate, I don't care about the "hit it further" bit, it's the playing the second shot from the fairway every time that counts. Well done Ali, love this tip.

Agreed! Being able to cut out most of those frustrating shots from the rough or having to take a drop because you can’t find your ball is invaluable. I would rather sacrifice a few yards for accuracy, especially now that I have gotten back into golf after a 15 year hiatus.

What a wonderful piece of advice. After many hundreds of hours of wedge practice, my irons/driver ball position started to creep backwards. My son noticed and I"ve started to play further forward - quite a mind shift but with overall pleasing results. I'm struggling a bit with distance these days - now only probably around 220/230m (240/250y) but this is helping. I can't wait to put this piece of excellent advice into action (and outdrive my son!). Big thanks from Sydney - Dave

Hello Ali. what a great explanation you have given me among other things. I started practicing with the tips you gave. I just hit straight again instead of slice. I am now also more confident behind the ball where I just put the driver slightly in the middle instead of immediately behind the ball. I also notice it in my shoulders. Thank you and greetings from the Netherlands.

Great video Ali! I went in for a driver fitting this week. Discovered TSR1 gave me 15 yards carry over current Ping G. I was extactic until I saw on launch monitor that I was hitting 2.5 degrees down even though I thought I was hitting up. Club fitters solution was to move me to a lower lofted driver to take advantage of my downward strike. Needless to say I didn't get along well with this change. No purchase as my goal was to figure out how to properly hit up with the big stick before entertaining a club change. I saw your video and went to range and was very impressed on how this helped with strike and my ability to hit a draw. Thanks for the great tip! The quest for more distance conntinues!

I've been searching for a tip like this for 6 months. During my club fitting I saw that my attack angle with the driver was 3-4 degrees down every swing even though I felt like I was hitting upwards. No matter how hard I tried I could not get my path on the positive side. Every now and then I would get to +1 degree. It felt like I was at 20 degrees and swinging straight up in the air. The ball actually did go 20 plus yards farther, but I just couldn't repeat it no matter how hard I tried. This tip looks so simple and makes sense. I'm heading to my simulator now and giving it a try. More to come 😊.

Excellent tip! I had Sciatic Surgery a few years ago to try and take the pain out of the swing. So, out of reflex, I began to slide forward and started to hit lots of low & inconsistent drives but as I like to say, physical pain is very persuasive. I've known for some time that I must keep behind the ball until after its hit. If we ever get some good weather I intend to hit a small bucked a day, if my back allows, to try and correct my slide forward swing...

Getting swing tips from youtube is not often a fruitful endeavor, but this video turned out to be the exception. I was doing exactly what you were saying when driving - I had a tilt at address, had the ball at my front heel, but, although I knew you swing up with the driver, this video made me realize I hadn't actually been doing it. The lightbulb went off when I realized my shots were low and only around 200 yards, just like the one you hit with the club moving downward. Wow. I didn't really understand that I wasn't getting proper loft on the ball, and it was because my club was probably actually moving down at impact. I tried your tip out on the course, and although I had a couple mishits where I hit the ground before the ball, the majority of strikes flew so much better than they had been - higher, further, and somehow straighter. I finally felt l was swinging driver the way it was meant to be swung, utilizing its loft. This was such a helpful tip that saw immediate benefits to my game as a newer golfer. Thank you, Ali!!

  • @georgesealy4706

What you describe in this video is EXACTLY what I was doing. I had the ball forward in my stance as I tried to hit up on the ball. However, tee balls often went low and to the left. I felt I was hitting the ball hard, but the ball was going nowhere. I tried harder and harder to hit up on the ball. No success. Yes, at address I had the clubhead right behind the ball just as you said. Making this simple adjustment makes a huge difference. My tee ball is now going straight and it is higher. This is crazy in that such a simple and quick adjustment can have such a major impact. Thanks so much.

I watched it, then practiced on the range for about 30 minutes and then played a round of golf with my 29 year old son. OK I just got back from a round of golf and here's my experience. Over the last year I've been concentrating setting up and swinging as he describes with moderate success. Today I did one thing different. At address and reading to swing instead of looking at the ball I focused on looking at the ground 4 inches behind the ball. Results were excellent ball flight and drives were around 25 yards longer. I think for me looking at the ball was subconsciously making me hit the ball slightly on the down swing or hitting with level contact. Glad I watched this video last night.

I used to hit a push fade. Thirty years ago I went to driving range and got a five gallon bucket of balls and started experimenting on how to get rid of the fade. Started out placing ball on tee with another tee 2 inches behind it. Set up to back tee and focused on back tee. Found out my sweet spot is about 5 inches behind the ball. At 70 years old I am still hitting 300 yard drives several times a week, average is 260 to 285. This tee system also works with irons. 5 iron 1 inch behind ball, 7 iron front edge of ball, 8 iron 1 inch in front of ball.

    Great video!
Angry at my constant slice, I went to the range, with a bushel of balls. I picked a target that was about 150 yards away, and hit about 50 balls, using a full, but very easy swing. The ball started to go amazingly straight, as distance was not really my goal. I then played a draw, and a fade, and then a bunch more, straight shots, and it got easier and easier. Then I started to put some power behind my shots, until eventually, I started hitting the fence.
It was a beautiful day, and it knocked a lot of strokes off of my scorecard.
The real ball is a lot scarier than a range ball, so I go to the range once in a while and repeat that process. It really builds confidence, and good shots lead to more good shots, always!

Thank you for this. It works. I saw it on The Average Golfer, who said clearly he got it from you and provided the link to your video. I am 82, have played for over 60 years, have a 16-17 handicap. Of course I have lost distance with age. But I have been working hard on improving my swing mechanics and speed in order to get carry back to 200 yards or more and total distance to 225 or better. I happened to apply your tip halfway through practice with driver at the PGA Superstore in Rockville, Maryland where I can get actual data from their Foresight GC Hawk launch monitors. I have been using two drivers. My usual one is a Callaway Epic GBB Sub Zero 10.5 degree with a Graphite Design Tour AD-IZ 5 R1 (regular plus) 54 gram shaft. The other is a 10.5 degree XXIO X black, 2019 version with orange trim, not the newer one with green trim, recently bought in mint condition for a bargain price. It has a Miyazaki AX-1 47 gram stiff shaft (International Flex Code 4333, which is really stiff minus).
Before results (with ProV1x ball): With Callaway driver, ball speed 117.3, carry 190, total 212. Best single shot ball speed 120.6, carry 198 total 218. On other days, I have occasionally hit 205 carry, but that has become frustratingly rare. With XXIO driver, ball speed 118.7, carry 191, total 210, best single shot ball speed 118.9, carry 196, total 215. Meh.
After results, using your setup tip, with XXIO driver: ball speed 122.1, carry 205, total 228, single best shot ball speed 124.2, carry 209, total 234. I was overjoyed.
To be fair, part of the improvement was due to my applying instructions on right arm adduction and external rotation advice from another favorite, Eric Cogorno, from a June 4 video titled "The TRICK To Leading With The Right Arm In The Downswing," as well as other advice that in order to make a correct rotation you absolutely must first get your weight on to the lead leg/foot, if your weight stays on both feet or back, you will just spin the hips, throw the swing off and lose power. I was also reminding myself to brace the trail leg, turn the right hip back, and turn the shoulders more fully back even if it initially feels exaggerated. All things easy to forget. But regardless, it was only after using your address tip that I got a sudden 14 yard improvement in carry. So thank you. And thank Andy.

This changed my driver game immediately. I first saw Moe Norman doing this, then George Bryant. But, I didn’t understand why until this video. He explained it perfectly. You have to hit to the right with an in to out swing because you’re going to start hitting draws. I went from 230 to 260 the first time I tried to hit this way.

WOW! best tip EVER! I am 72 yo struggling with driver for some time now and blown out to genuine 30+ handicap. Tried this today and was crushing my drives and STRAIGHT! Setting up clubface behind the ball and keeping your eye on the ball as you swing and release promotes much higher club speed/ height and CONFIDENCE! Playing partners mouths dropped open as I regularly matched our longest hitter (my younger bro in law). Tried similar behind ball set up on irons/ hybrids and couldn't believe how much purer you hit the ball! Most enjoyable game in a long, long time. Can't believe how I've never heard/been shown this tip before. Thank you, thank you Ali

So many people have useless body movements trying to "help" a shot, or the dreaded lower hand death grip that prevents the clubhead from coming through on bottom for best speed. If we trust our setup, a golf ball is just something in the way of a good swing. Really. With that in mind, this is a good video tip.
I can tell you that for me [decades ago] I learned to hit my driver by accident: pulled it out of the bag thinking it was my 3W... and swung it as such, not trying to crutch anything - just a relaxed shot, and the result was "wow". Until that day, I had really struggled.

Tried this last night and it was a little bit of magic. I was doing nearly the same things to get the ball in the air but I had a two way miss and still hit down alot. I dont know why this works and I dont want to think about it :) Just grip it and rip it. It was so fun seeing how high and far my driver went! I hit one 270 which is by far my personal best. Thanks and subsribed!

This is a great tip! My teenage son is just starting to play. His driver speed is between 115-117. When he hits it well, he’s carrying 300…but, most of them are squibblers to the left (his left handed). I had him move the ball up farther and farther to try and hit up on it and even with the ball outside his lead foot by 2 inches, he was still coming down on it…we’ll have to try this and see how it works! Thanks!

This is exactly what I was trying as the swing and setup feel more similar to the iron swing. Leaning the back shoulder down and trying to rotate feels so awkward. I was thinking what if I just line up the club in the center which will make me hit up and I can turn my body more comfortably. Definitely keeps the back from hurting and also stops hitting down on the ball.

This was huge for me. After two weeks at Bandon Dunes learning this, a pause at top of backswing and less bend in my knees I was getting 285-295 carry w 3 wood of deck and accurate enough to hit green diagonal across range Was getting 310sh carry with driver but hard to know exactly how far as there were no good targets to range at that distance.

    • @beniteztheconman

I've been doing this for the last year and suggesting it to a lot of my friends on the golf course especially when they slice right, such a quick fix. It goes straighter and further. If you're pulling it left a lot something that I've found that works for me to straighten back out... is to start with the club on the side of the ball on the backswing, for some reason when I come through it'll go straight or right instead of left. I always need slight adjustments depending on the given day.

Can you use this tip for irons too? How many inches would your iron be from the ball? Please advise. Your tip works great with the driver. Before i was always descending on my drives as even my tee went backwards after impact. Now my tee stays put or goes forward a bit with improved drives. Please let me know on irons though! Thanks.

Watched your video. I am probably one that has a more descending blow with the driver. I am going to try the "6 inch" behind method to exaggerate bottoming out before I hit the ball. Always had an issue with low traj and know it is because I am not bottoming at the right spot - I'll report back.
