  • Nobody wants to give up distance from the tee but this common driver fault is costing golfers valuable distance every time they tee it up.
    In this video I discuss the most common driver fault that I see and show how it could be costing you over 70yds in distance from the tee, the good news however, it's easy to fix.
    So if you feel that you struggle with this common driver fault then watch as I run through some simple steps to get you hitting the driver longer and more consistently that ever

    Hey, I took this tip straight to the course and the last 3 days have been my best driving days of the year. All season long I would carry 190 to 210 and this trick brought those distances to between 230 and 250. I had no idea that launching my driver at double the height would give me such a big increase. Now all I need is actual practice which I think will increase that carry distance even more. So great tips!!!

    Great 'info vid', Chris. Major props! If I may make a supplemental, added suggestion to all golfers of amateur / weekend status ... and that is to MAKE SURE you're arms are not extended at the location of your initial address. If you extend your arms even a bit early, you'll not be striking 'through' the golf ball. You'll be striking up a smidge early, thus putting top spin on the ball which will defeat the purpose of this video lesson. MAKE SURE your arms extend just to the left of your left shoe. In this way your impact will be on a upward path & THROUGH the ball.
    All this for nought if you fail to get to your left side before impact, of course. My students do wonderfully when they fully understand this very important concept. Keep up the great work, Chris!

    Ditto Darryl Parkinson's comments. This is one of the best instructional videos I've ever seen. Period. Short. Concise. Specific. Data points that jump out at the viewer. A gain of 70+ yards by hitting 6 degrees up on the ball instead of 6 down. So clear in the data. My Garmin R10 has been showing me with a consistent -2.5 downward strike on my drives. I thot the R10 was not measuring my swing correctly. For the past 40 years, I've thot I was hitting up on my drives. Not. You've show me precisely why I can't even hit my drives 200 yards (I'm 81, so I'm not expecting tour-level performance). You've shown me precisely what I need to work on and how to work on it. Splendid video. Splendid.

    For quite a long time now I have believed that the main focus for me (HI 17) in my quest to hit the ball further should be on working on quality of contact and optimising launch conditions rather than just trying to swing faster. This video is a great demonstration of that. Thanks.

      Truth be told. I swing fast already with a 2i. 100plus mph. But when i use a driver, and i swing too fast, it doesn't go far and slices or tops the ball. Even with a lean back tee high and hitting up into the ball, i fuck up. So I've avoided using driver til now, and working on tempo and compression on ball.

      @matt7iron Před 2 lety +1

      @@ChrisRyanGolf does this work with a flat swing, it's still hard for me to swing up on the driver to reduce backspin, i know what your saying works because my longest Drives of 260 yds came when i hit the Ground behind the ball and the driver popped up on the ball reducing spin and the drives went longer than if i hadn't hit the Ground.

    • @sixstringsdown1
      @sixstringsdown1 Před 2 lety

      @@matt7iron Can you just continue to move the ball forward in your setup until you hit your optimal numbers?
      The reason I ask is because at 61, I have been playing only 3 years & also struggle with driver carry! I moved the ball forward until I was hitting up on it, then slowly moved the ball back, while chocking up on the club by about 1/2 inch. I am still by no means a decent driver, but I am slowly gaining distance while also focusing on better contact on the club face. To do this, I took some speed off the downswing, but hope, along with better flexibility routines to eventually get consistent strikes THEN add back more speed slowly...
      We shall see, I suppose. 🤔

    • @dwidep
      @dwidep Před 2 lety +5

      @@matt7iron Try positioning the ball in the front of your stance where you normally would put it, but instead of resting the club where the ball is, rest it in the middle of your stance. Then, when you swing you're just swinging the club instead of actually trying to hit the ball. I'm long and consistent off the tee, but I never try to hit the ball. What I do is try to hit an imaginary ball in the middle of my stance, and the result is that I actually hit the ball at the first part of my follow through. This creates a launch angle. I carry around 275 or so, and my driver is the best part of my game. If I could only learn to chip.

  • @williamturner9450
    @williamturner9450 Před rokem

    I really like your point about the ball being set forward in the stance based on the center of your chest, as opposed to using the heel. I've put in a ton of work with my driver lately, and everyone always says "take a wide stance and line the ball up with your front heel". The problem is that if you go too wide, it becomes almost impossible to effectively shift the weight forward as your legs will be at too steep of an angle. What ends up happening in this scenario is you make contact with the ball while your weight is still closer to the center of your stance, and the club can't actually reach the ball -- this results in topping it. I think your explanation promotes proper balance which is one of the most important things when it comes to golf (and especially driving). If we aren't properly balanced, we won't be able to effectively shift our weight and that leads to horrible swings.

    Unfortunately I had to abruptly give up the game of golf completely in the Fall of 2017 due to an injury, but I was a 2 handicap at that time. I really wasn’t an overly long driver. I probably maxed out at about 280 yards and I guess under certain conditions could probably get close to 300. In any event, I never tested this at the time, so I have no idea what my attack angle was. All I have to say is that I wish my course gave me 50 yards of roll. Based on his chart that’s roughly what the fairways were giving if you look at carry distance to total distance.

    Perhaps the most useful video I have ever seen for an older high handicapper like myself. Thanks for the insight.

    Thanks Chris will be giving this a go this weekend. Really struggling with the driver at the mo. Loving hitting my irons, following a lesson got told to try and punch my iron shots like Tommy Fleetwood. Getting great accuracy but struggling off the Tee.

      Maybe a bit of that lesson has crept into the driver swing Gary, really common for that to happen

      @@ChrisRyanGolf now if only I knew how to counteract that without messing up my iron play! But I keep telling myself golf is not my day job and does not pay the bills, so enjoy...

    I usually hit around 240 yards for my drives but one time last year I hit over 280. I couldn't duplicate it though. Now I have something to work with..Thanks...

    That casting motion can be due to poor hip rotation on the backswing, which means the arms have no room on the downswing, so the club casts out to in. A good example to see if you do this, is if your left arm chicken wings early after hitting the ball

    I have a negative attack angle with a ball speed og between 145/150 and constantly only carry 220/230. This has been the best video I have seen to explain what I have been doing wrong. Hope to get out next week and work on this and see the difference

    Thank you Chris. My wife and I used this simple technique this am when practising. My goodness both hit straighter and longer and on the sweet spot. 7 driver holes and 7 good hits. What can you do to correct my irons which let me down…

    Great drill. What would you suggest if we start drop kicking our drives when doing this , actually hitting the ground behind the ball?

    Thx man. My
    Driver has been holding me back and I’m tired of it lol. Haven’t tried drill but I’m optimistic on getting this. My driver hasn’t seen the middle of the club head that often. I’d love to see a strike on the bottom. It’s always on the very top. Horrible.
