Lovely video my fellow teacher. Today I have a lesson with a determined and disciplined student. I want the best for this lad. However I couldn’t figure out his situation. I knew it was his tilt back- the water in ear analogy will definitely help! Life saver - playing the game at a high level is easy. Teaching it to others is harder than I thought.

I just started playing October 2023. I dabbled in the early 90’s but have decided to get more serious. I’m shooting under 100 most rounds and learning the whole, “strike the ball first.” It’s the most difficult sport I’ve ever played. My short game is coming along nicely and my goal is to be shooting low 90’s when I reach my first year of playing. I really enjoy and appreciate you taking time to share with guys like me, a hack.

This hopefully will have fixed my bad self taught ideas on the swing. The wrist/forearm rotation is what I have been trying to fight for so long and have been losing power and missing right as a result. Can already feel the power in the bottom of the swing just practicing turning the wrists over through impact! Thanks

I think it's about time I pay for some lessons. I really wanted to get this down by research, then trial and error. I'm 41 in fairly good shape. I've hit a few bombs 250+ but on average 190-210, often with a huge slice. I know something is wrong because I have a senior Flex 3wood I hit with ease very little slice at times but mostly accurate at a distance of 180-200 I'm thinking that my 3wood is spot on but leaving a ton of yardage in play with my driver.

I have been playing the chip putt for almost 20 years. I predominantly use PW for short ones and 7i for long ones. Every now and then, I use LW when short sided. Also, you could steepen the shaft at setup and play it off the toe to get it to check more. It's a very reliable shot because you use your putting intuition and feel. I get a lot of them going in. Thanks, Chris, for recommending it to everyone.

  • @jonathanlambert7004

Great video for the struggling high handicappers. The single most frustrating thing is finding a concept that seems to work then the next day it doesn't. The brain somehow defaults back to factory settings. Your video covers this really well. The lateral hip movement before the rotation. The amount of slow practice needed to nail this is crucial. Patience and more patience. Belief this will work. Don't go looking for other fixes just because you can't nail this after a few attempts. Thank you Chris

Played golf for Clemson University but right after college i had a extremely bad wreck and had to learn to do all the fun stuff over again. It was beyond extremely frustrating knowing how i used to play golf to barely being able to shoot anywhere near what I used too. Improving at the great game of golf never stops but at least im finally back shooting in the high 70s again and enjoying myself on the golf course again. It's extremely appreciated. The hosel of the club angles the shaft forward, progressively more as shafts get shorter and lofts increase or the reason you state, causing the club to strike ball before the lowest point of the swing arc. That the move you illustrate here does is part of the “magic” in Harvey Penick’s Magic Move at the top which reverses club head direction and loads wrists with more radial deviation and transfers the club head energy and stores it by bending the club shaft. The more aggressively one does the movement of body mass down and forward against the inertia of the club head mass moving in the opposite direction the more “loading” of the shaft you feel in the hands at the start of the downswing. The move also acts to pin the chest tighter across the chest which helps control the club and force the trail arm into elbow leading external rotation and creates the leverage to deal with the force in the finish extension when the axis of rotation for the club head mass moves from lead shoulder to trail shoulder. Without that lateral shift of mass (and side bend) the club force in the finish causes a loss balance or elbow bending to steer the club up and around. Whenever body mass moves REFLEXIVELY in the swing it is a reaction to the force of the club trying to pull the body off balance and that movement usually isn’t the ideal path for consistently striking the ball. Why do beginners nearly always pronate and swing club too far inside? Poor posture and no dynamic support by legs and core. If they try to swing back outside the hands they get pulled off balance. The reflexive brain’s solution? Pronate lead arm and steer club to where it doesn’t pull the body off balance at that point but that isn’t the ideal swing path. Mastering the golf swing is a process of first learning what path the club head should be on (swing waypoints) then figuring out how to stay in balance while doing it by moving body mass and changing muscle support BEFORE the force increases to be prepared to deal with it. That’s what this move does. At the point in the downswing where the club shaft is horizontal to the point it is horizontal again in the finish the club head force is changing too fast for normal human reflexes to react so many of the moves like this one are done proactively before the force is felt to prevent the unconscious primitive parts of the brain controlling balance from reacting reflexively. That move sets up the arm-shoulder triangle controlling club head mass path to swing down to impact and on a balanced path when support from the muscles and body mass equal the force generated in the club head. The thing about it moving the axis rotation at the lead shoulder affecting ball striking is just a side effect one needs to take into account via ball placement relative to to stance and how much the shaft leans and club head lags through impact. Why in some swing styles ball (Hogan / Nicklaus) the ball was always just behind the lead heel and in other it move back in the stance as the length of the club shafts get shorterr.
