- The Samurai Shodown NeoGeo collection has been marketed as the definitive SamSho collection… so, is it?
This collection contains the 6 games originally released for the NeoGeo as well as one which, until now, was thought to be an urban legend. So that’s Samurai Shodown 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5 Special and Samurai Shodown 5 Perfect. In addition to these 7 games, Digital Eclipse has included a ton of extra content including interviews, artwork, music and behind the scenes stuff like character development sketches.
Ultimately the strength of any collection is the games included and the quality of the emulation. Digital Eclipse has done an excellent job overall but there are a couple of minor issues that may be deal-breakers for some people. This review covers all of this and more in detail. It is also specifically based on the PS4 version.

So the 'HD Zoom' feature is actually called HD scaling in the game. I reached out to the studio head of Digital Eclipse (Mike Mika) to get some clarity on exactly what the scaling numbers are. I asked if it was 4x and the only response I got was that he liked my tweet... so make of that what you will.

Unfortunately the Switch doesn’t have that option because of how much processing power it demands.

Thank you for this very comprehensive review! I was wondering, the games musn't be "plain" roms, considering the presence of a "HD zoom" feature (unless it's more of a shader?)
I actually own the Wii version of Samurai Shodown Anthology, and was able to extract the arranged sountrack (including the one for Samsho V, which I believe never made it to the Neogeo, meaning this soundtrack was probably introduced with the anthology).
I'm curious about how the music for the Collection is stored, and if there is, maybe, a way to replace the original musics by the arranged ones, since the developers haven't put a DLC online for AST yet (and might never do)?
Would you mind telling me if you can find the musics anywhere in the Steam folders, and if deleting them cuts the game silent (in which case implementing the AST should be a realistic goal)?

Hello I had a question regarding this games vs mode I just got this collection for the ps4 and when I went on vs mode it won’t let me fight the cpu, when I pick my character I can’t choose my opponent it shows that player 2 has to choose its character and I’m not playing against someone else so why is this happening can you help have you experienced this problem? Would love some feedback on this thanks.
for me . if i want to play a very good fighting video game. i go to SNK. for me SNK # 1 and crapcom # 2 always have been. you can see why in their games.

I already own most of the games in this collection in one form or another. I'd still download it to my PS4, however, if I could snag it for around $15. Can't justify spending any more than that when I already purchased Samurai Shodown 2019 for the most refined iteration.
Yeah fair enough. The games themselves offer very in the way of new features. If playing people online was a thing then I’d say get it for sure.

So if I okay let’s say samurai showdown 1 on this collection and leave the HD zoom feature off will that still make everything look arcade perfect like the original Neo Geo MVS Version did when it like zooms out and in and stuff like that
Correct. They’re presented as they were in the arcade. The scaling feature only prevents pixels being dropped when it zooms out.

Good review mate. I was in two minds about buying this game but after hearing it’s made by the people who made sf 30 anniversary and it’s the arcade ports. I might give it a pass. The arcade ports seem extremely hard and I’ve found that they are near impossible to play. SSF2T as specially. Would be good to get a collection where it’s the home release versions.
You can change the difficulty but yeah the arcade ports are on the hard side. I'm not an expert on NEO GEO games but the home versions of these are near identical because the AES is basically an arcade machine. So I'm not sure they would be any easier. If you're holding out for an easier version then I'd say it's safe to assume this isn't likely to happen any time soon.
goukigod would you say it’s SSF2T hard or it’s actually possible to complete the game with each character.
Apparently, SSF2T is set to the hardest difficulty by default in the collection and there's no way to change this. The SamSho games are hard but not frustratingly so, so I wouldn't think it's as hard as that. I'd never spent much time with these games prior to playing this collection and was able to beat each game on the default difficulty without too much hassle.

No. That would have been cool though. I remember making all kinds of waking character variants in SNK VS Capcom 2 on PS2
Is every game in the collection censored or just 5 perfect?
All the games are presented as they were in the arcade. V perfect isn't censored as far as I know. It is missing some animations because at the time they had hit the limited of what could be stored on an MVS cartridge.

I want it but the digital version is very expensive and the physical version doesn't exist any more.
I've seen some listings on ebay today for new physicals at reasonable prices. e.g. $70 Aus. I believe it's technically out of print though so what stock is left will vanish quickly and prices are sure to rise.

Yes. There isn't a next-gen upgrade but it works perfectly on PS5.

I can't really answer that. Very different games. If you want to play samsho online then the latest game might be your best bet. This is great for playing with friends on the couch or for the extras.

neither they both suck ass this is not worth the price for 6 emulated roms which we learnt to do as kids i have the entire neo geo library all neatly tucked in one folder on my laptop and i will not pay that much for it they should have given us this WITH samurai shodown 2019 that would have been a nice package

I think unfortunately, in the 90's nothing was powerful enough or had storage to contain every game. There is a similar PS2/Wii/PSP collection released in 2009 though.

You'd think so hey. Maybe the game restricts you to your own region. Normally in Australia, in other games, we do occasional get matched with Japanese players. A shame.

Actualyl the Wii PS2 anothology had a Training mode and color edit
not only that but it included Samurai Shodown 6 so i prefer that collection
If anyone has epilepsy i recommend the wii version because they removed the flashing to prevent seizures

You just had to blame the collection and devs for lack of players online. Plus VI is a game on a different system. The title on the collection clearly said "NeoGeo" therefore NeoGeo games are the only ones allowed. Not that I'm complaining because the Neo Geo Pocket Color game I'd rather play Capcom vs. SNK than Samurai Shodown Neo Geo Pocket Color and I'd rather play SoulCaliber or Tekken over the 64 and Sen games.

Not definitive because it doesn't have the arranged soundtrack or SSVI.
The PS2 Anthology was better even without V Perfect.
Could be a licence issue I guess. Aside from that though the NEO GEO collection has significantly more content than PS2 anthology. It didn't include VI on the disc (although it was a free download at launch), but it does include V Special which has a lot of changes over vanilla V and is a superior game. You can also swap between the English (US) and Japanese ROMs, which have some differences. The visuals are much improved as well. The games aren't scaled in the PS2 anthology so unless you have a decent scaler, they won't look anywhere near as sharp. The games run better too, with no laggy inputs, drops in frame rate and almost no loading. Not to mention the huge amount of behind the scenes content on the NEO GEO collection and that every game can be played online... if you know someone else with it of course.
The biggest issue with the NEO GEO collection from my point of view is the lack of a training mode which Anthology does have. Even still while it may not be 100% complete, it is by far the most complete to date.

The game doesn't even have practice mode which was in the ps2 version years ago. This game is only good for ssv special, otherwise it sucks.
Strongly disagree. This collection is presented at a higher resolution than the PS2 collection. It includes both V Special and V Perfect as well as both the western and Japanese versions of each game. It has an absolute shit-ton of extra content you can’t find anywhere else and if you know someone else with it you can play online together.

I hate these remasters. All these games were made for scanlines of a CRT.
If you really want to play this on a CRT you could use something like a GBS-Control to down res it to 240p.
I guess the point though is that it's getting increasingly harder to play these games on the hardware they were orginlally designed for.
