i was playing in a hard rock band, late 80's. We rehearsed in the garage of an old hippie. He would always have us smoke a joint and listen to stuff from his record collection after we were done practicing, probably in hopes to broaden our influence. Well one day he put's on "last train to hicksville" and I was absolutely freakin' out. He say's "You'll NEVER find this record, anywhere" At the time there was not much going on with Dan and no way to "Google" Dan Hicks. So, he was a mystery. And then one day I find "last train..." on vinyl and then I find the Epic, Original Recordings lp and I never stopped. Now I have Everything (CD's DVD's Vinyl) All the Surfdog releases and I was lucky enough to meet Dan at the El Capitan theatre before a show, he signed my freshly opened copy of Striking it Rich". Saw him at Mc Cabe's as well. I can't say enough about my love for this Artist. His songwriting is so unique, his sense of humor is up there with the greats, i.e Groucho. He will always be special to me.

I'm from the UK and saw him by chance in SF in 1972 while I was on a dream journey around America on a Continental Trailways Visit USA ticket. I loved his work and bought all his albums but he was pretty much unheard of in the UK. Not until I discovered the Hicks List mailing list about thirty years later did I ever meet anyone else who knew about him. I was incredibly excited when he was due to play in London in 2005 but he called it off because of the July 5 attacks there. In the end he never came to London, but in December 2017 I flew to California to see him on almost his last ever gig, in Auburn CA. He looked really ill but I was thankful to have seen him just once again before he died.

Reet dot doo dah! Isn't that the Austin City Limits set?
Dan brought his band to Phoenix/Scottsdale about 2013, and played at the now defunct, and sorely missed Compound Grill.
He was extremely gracious, and I was lucky enough to get a chance to chat with him for a bit after the show, and to tell him I'd been a big fan since I got his first album - "Original Recordings - in 1969, and he and Symphony Sid Page and Jaime Leopold and the Lickettes turned me on to awing, and led me to Django Reinhardt & Stephane Grappelli, then Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys -> Asleep At The Wheel, et al, and I became a much hipper dude than I would have been had I not got swung by Dan and his Hot Licks.
So, I got to tell Dan what a gas it was to see and hear him play after all these years, and he seemed to appreciate hearing that. I am proud to say that I stifled the urge to say, "This is an opportunity, isn't it?" ("You said it, Jimmy!"

I knew Dan; worked on his car, a 1985 Cadillac Seville that had seen better days, but we kept it going 'cause he loved it. It was a POS but comfortable for him, so we respected his desire to keep it going. He could have afforded a better ride...
He kept knocking off the driver's door armrest and inner door panel. I had put so many sheet metal screws into it, there was nowhere left to screw into.and then, that was the last we saw of the Seville and Dan at B and G Auto on Montford ave. in Mill Valley....
Saw him at the Sweetwater club in Mill Valley just before he passed. Amazing show....Would not have suspected his condition at all. But I knew...
    Will NOT forget it...
I scare myself is his song I will never forget either...

Hicks was an original member of the Charlatans, which forever implants him in SF Musical History. I heard him on the radio a few years before his death. I remember wondering if he might have been failing. I hope he didn't suffer much later in life. He brought a lot of joy into the world. Can't believe those wonderful years are so far gone, now.

The first time I saw Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks (his "Lickettes" lol) was in the early 1970's in the Santa Cruz (CA) Auditorium. All the members of his band are excellent jazz/blue grass musicians. His sense of humor (dry) is legendary... just before he was to go on stage he was quietly walking amongst a standing room only crowd with dark sunglasses and his loose jacket/suit... what was funny is not many of us seemed to notice. Great concert playing all his hits (before hitsville album) - including "how can I miss you when you won't go away" and "I scare myself". FYI he is a musician's musician... for example: one of his biggest "big name fans" is Bette Midler. He eventually parted from his "lickettes" and didn't seem to gather any momentum. The video here is like a reunion. Never the less he will always be appreciated and one of my favorites.
