She came from my home town San Diego. Just before she got a record deal she was on a major local radio station to sing and play acoustic guitar live on air.
Needless to say she was great and stood out high and above everyone else. And she wasn't even a polished pro yet.

Also, it was inaccurate of that woman to call her ugly! I also can't help but cry at this video because everything was so much better 11 years ago. Biden is the worst. People who were 10 or 15 at the time of that video are the worst.
she is real because she came back into the place as here self and brought joy and unity to the people. and the peoples reaction is pure and real that is what being a real human is all about.

Yeah as an older white man I was embarrassed by the guy commenting that she was homely first and then sexy after she sang well...neither is anywhere near appropriate for him to say outloud never mind on camera...I imagine he was sufficiently humiliated later though...you'd hope anyway...most guys would be thrilled to be there to witness it and know better than to objectify her like that...on behalf of all men...please accept our sincere apology.

Jewel was perfect for this gag. She performed in a LOT of coffeehouses before she made it big, so this probably felt just like home to her. And frankly, a lot of other stars probably don't have her chops to do this live thing in a crappy little karaoke bar with bad audio, loud crowd, etc. and still blow folks away. She is the bomb.

I love the people who are looking at Jewel and singing with her rather than looking at her through their phone cameras and so not enjoying the moment.

I saw Jewel in concert in '99. I was brought to tears, and I didn't even want to go to the concert (my roommate bought an extra ticket). I became a fan when I saw her live that night. She was absolutely the most magnetic entertainer I've seen IRL, and I've seen a good bit!
That's when you know they're the real deal. I had a similar experience in 2014 when I saw Soundgarden at RedRocks. I will never forget how much more amazing Criss Cornell's singing was live. I would go see Jewel in a heartbeat for that reason. And I might have had a little crush on her since I was 11 in 1996. lol

I saw this for the first time in 2010 too. I've never been a Jewel fan. But listening to those two songs she sang made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. It still happens today 9 years later.
Just to prove that comment was true, I'm back again a year later. And I still love it.
Seriously one of the greatest things ever put on camera. That single night is a core memory for every one of them.
I worked security at a Karaoke bar in my early 20’s and it’s probably the most fun I ever had in my life.
People felt and showed genuine joy and excitement when someone stepped on stage, broke out of their shell and showed their singing chops.
Smiles all around.
I've watched this at least 15 times and it never gets old.

I'm revisiting this - it makes me cry and laugh at the same time - I LOVED Jewel since her first record - so funny those who didn't put 2 & 2 together and realize Karen was Jewel .....
Once a young woman worked as an office assistant in our NYC office while she was waiting to make it big on Broadway. One Christmas we had a karaoke party and she just blew everyone's socks off because she was so incredible. She made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. We made her sing every song...no one else was allowed to get on stage after she sang! She got a job as a backup singer for a show soon after that and left the company. Unfortunately, I don't think she ever did "make it big," but it was just astonishing to hear her then.
It’s true even back-ups have been known to make it big. Notable examples are Mariah Carey, Judith Hill, Lizzo and Heather Morris.
She did find a break in the country music scene. She’s one of the best selling artists - Shania Twain
Some people truly have the gift to move us with their voices. Sadly its not the best that make it to the top.
She doesn't have to make it "big". If she can ear a living doing what she loves, I can assure you...she will feel rich.

I actually disagree. I think it's the opposite. You know it's not star power, but actual talent when you can go in as a homely unknown and still rock the bar.
This has to be one of the best surprise gigs of all time. A talent of her level showing up to a Karaoke Bar to play a prank on the locals speaks volumes of her character.

Her on Joe Rogan has to be his top 10 interviews ever! How she was homeless, dying in her car outside a hospital when they refused her treatment because she had no money. A good hearted doctor came out to draw blood every few hours and eventually saved her life. They are friends to this day.❤️❤️❤️❤️
It wasn't on Joe Rogan but I heard Jewel talk about that incident, too. She was suffering from lead poisoning and would've died if not for the doctor's intervention if I'm not mistaken
My father was part owner of a night club in Chattanooga and this girl randomly came in one day, said she was passing through between Nashville and Altanta and asked if she could open for the local band that was playing that night for $100. She played a couple of songs and he was like sure! Year or two later, he hears Jewel on the radio and went and dug through a big box of demo cassettes people had left and sure enough, it was her! He has a lot of stories of bands playing before they were big (Hootie, DMB, the list goes on), but this was always his favorite "before they were stars" encounter.

when you sing and play you understand a few things about music and here are the basics
- Music Conveys a message and more importantly A MEANING
- This meaning can be different to us all
- The communication medium that it uses is EMOTION
You get confused because you think it's the words, it's not the words, it plays on your emotions
Now jewel's songs deal with what ????
Love, Passion , Despair
Life experiences that we can all relate to (TAKE NOTE.... WE CAN RELATE)
Then of course you can song structure and lyrics, this is intended by design
but then you have Notes
POINT IN FACT

See, if you were here with me right now i could make you tear up , i could give you a vocal example of a lower register voice singing a certain line and nothing would happen
then i could sing the same thing again (slightly tweaked) and in a higher register

another part has to do with Positive emotional association for the purpose of selling records

but yeah, if you ever get a chance to take music lessons and you do it ... say.. for approx 6 months You literally can get to a point where you hit a note for the first time and you make yourself cry
and.. it sucks, because hightened emotion kills the tone and delivery of the note
so singing is both about ability and ... You have to remember (at the same time)
to sing the note beautifully, To feel the music
BUT... NOT TO GET CARRIED AWAY EMOTIONALLY , that's probably the hardest part

Jewel saved my life many yrs ago, my wife left me on Christmas morning 2001, I was lost so I decided to drink alcohol till I passed out and would eventually fall into a coma yeah that much booze. I had the radio on and I heard a voice it was Jewels voice, it brought me around and I went on line to find all her works and songs. Now 12 yrs later I am successful and content with my life. A very big turn around for me.I have many friends and associates her voice really did save me. I am eternally grateful. Thank-You Jewel

I have a story as well that I wont ever forget about the you were meant for me song. mine was a home invasion robbery, I was tied up beaten, and threatened to be killed, That was one of the songs that played on the radio... even through the ordeal I had enough sense to keep track of the number of songs played so I could have an idea of how long they were inside my house

I can still remember when I was about 15 years old she was in the radio and I like how she sings ,so I bought her album, but then years passed by and, suddenly she disappeared from the media. I mean that’s OK but she have a pretty great voice, though!!!
Jewel is from a time when the live version sounds as good or better than the radio version.
Yes, no auto-tune. The better-off folks had Pentium 233 MHz MMX CPU's and the rest of us had something like a Cyrix P150. Internet access was over phone lines. SoundBlaster 16 sound-cards were overpriced. Constant AOL floppy disks in the mail. Some people had a primary graphics card and a 3DFx Voodoo 2 secondary graphics card. Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitors. There was no chance of auto-tune in these days. Doom 2 and Quake 1, yes. Auto-tune, no.
Sorry to pull the band aid off guys auto tune has been around for a real long time, it came from old 70 funk bands wanting to sound electronic.
THAT BEING SAID she is amazing and obviously doesn't need it. Auto tune has become a "crutch" as of the past 15 years sadly.

Out of the tens of thousands of videos I’ve watched in the last decade this is one of my favorites.
Edit: to elaborate.. when she performs as Karen it’s one of the purest things I’ve ever seen. She can be her true self and the crowd can respond to the quality of her performance without the baggage of being entertained by a famous professional. Her star power was too overwhelming for them to enjoy the show as Jewel. And they nailed it with the Karen cheering section which allowed them to set this up flawlessly. It was perfect.

Karen derives from the name meaning *pure. I was born Karen. Such a shame it's a hated and ridiculed name these days.

I watch this video alot and I still can't get enough of this video. The people are out on probably a weekend night to have a good time and thus not a rowdy time, and Jewel displays the is down to earth at this bar. I absolutely love this video! A very uplifting video for me!
It was actually a MONDAY night, believe it or not? I was there (interviewed at 3:04). There are about twice as many people there on a weekend night! What an amazing moment

Can’t help but watch this video every time I stumble across it. That one girls jaw drop and total disbelief when Karen hits the high notes always cracks me up.
Everytime I see this video I just wish we had a full length version of her singing.
I've watched it many times and still, when Jewel hits the note and 4:00 that she's performed all her life, I'm still so proud of Karen.

That was awesome on SO many levels. Don’t judge a book by it’s cover, She was TOO authentic to NOT catch on lastly - and most importantly, her doing this was beyond GREAT for the fans and HER fans. Lastly, I love her backstory and her dad, who lives off the grid (with tech). God blessed the world with both of them.

The best part is 4:03 - 4:07 when Jewel hits the high note a girl in the crowd has this dazed look on her face, mouth hanging open. This is what it means when someone says " It blew My Mind ".

Jewel was my favorite for the first 5 years she came out. We are about the same age. Life took me away from music and I haven’t heard her for a while and this video has tears streaming down my face. I love the sincerity and passion In her words and voice. There’s so much more I can’t describe. Thank you for this. I think I’ll meet her one day, maybe when we’re 80.
