LYRICS
You took your coat off, stood in the rain
You're always crazy like that
And I watched from my window
Always felt I was outside looking in on you
You're always the mysterious one with
Dark eyes and careless hair
You were fashionably sensitive
But too cool to care
You stood in my doorway, with nothing to say
Besides some comment on the weather
Well in case you failed to notice
In case you failed to see
This is my heart bleeding before you
This is me down on my knees, and
These foolish games are tearing me apart
And your thoughtless words are breaking my heart
You're breaking my heart
You're always brilliant in the morning
Smoking your cigarettes and talking over coffee
Your philosophies on art, Baroque moved you
You loved Mozart and you'd speak of your loved ones
As I clumsily strummed my guitar
You'd teach me of honest things
Things that were daring, things that were clean
Things that knew what an honest dollar did mean
I hid my soiled hands behind my back
Somewhere along the line, I must have gone off track with you
Excuse me, guess I've mistaken you for somebody else
Somebody who gave a damn
Somebody more like myself
These foolish games are tearing me
You're tearing me, you're tearing me apart
And your thoughtless words are breaking my heart
You're breaking my heart
And you took your coat off, stood in the rain
You're always crazy like that - Hudba
2024 you with me?
Yup!
Always.
Here!
let's go!

🙃 Is anyone still listening in 2024?
This song stands the test of time! I grew up in a broken home, now at 32 semi-healed, i can now remove this song from a parent playing it on repeat, on *those* type of days from childhood and look at it objectively. Honestly, WOW, just wow... I've never felt more connected to my now passed away parent.
Here, girl 🙏
Listening right now at 04:35 a.m. In Buenos Aires
Listening to it right now in Norman Wells, NWT Canada always makes me feel connected and sad but good kind of sad
Nice song.. but why have the video about witches ?

Stop asking if we're still listening in 2024. We never stopped

Jewel is unmatched. This song is timeless. Her voice is perfection.
Absolutely Jewel's voice is quite simply a taste of perfection❤❤❤
I always listen her when is my birthday since I don't remember... masterpiece
She is a Jewel!

Funny that when you're a kid, you never imagine yourself getting old, or that the world as you know it will change drastically. All unimaginable things when we're young and careless. Fast forward 25 years and you lost touch with your childhood friends, working an average job, often reminiscing of the past. God damn did we ever take these times for granted. It's almost humbling in a weird twisted way. What a song. What an era. What a time that was. Amazing. Cheers to anyone that knows what I'm sayin'.
Exactly ..same over here in England ..I am a lighting and sound engineer of 18 years for the same firm and just got made redundant ..a big twist to the plot of my life ...Tim 😀

In 1996, 12 year old Jordan hated this song. Now, 39 year old Jordan in 2024 finally gets it.

After all these years and it still gives me goosebumps
thought I was the only one..
11 year old me loved this song.. 38 year old me feels it on a whole new level.
I could never break her ❤ she is my soulmate from across the fabrics of the timeless universe.
"Well excuse me, guess I've mistaken you for somebody else...somebody who gave a damn, somebody more like myself." Love that line and her music!
I couldn't stop repeating this song decade's later and still beautiful and so meaningful
I was in the Army when this video first came out. I was in the barracks with my platoon when the video started to play on tv. Forty-five seconds in, you couldn't hear a pin drop. All 25 of us went quiet raptured on a journey with this lovely woman and her enchanting voice. Then, rage against the machine came on. We never spoke of it. We did start talking about football, drinking, and talking 💩. So it was in the infantry.
Remember seeing her rise to stardom in the 90's. She is one of the few who had the talent to deserve her accolades. This song is amazing.
Jewel lives up to her name.
I'm so happy i grew up in this era, the music appealed to everyone.

I haven't heard this song in years, maybe decades. I was 15 when this came out and it used to make me cry. Still does. Simply beautiful all around.

"Fashionably sensitive, but too cool to care" - I think that encapsulates the entire vibe of the 90s
The most iconic song ever about every narcissist you ever 'loved'.

Yep, it'll never get old.
It's 2023 and this song has aged so well it's one of the rare classics that came from the 90s. When I first heard this song I was in my mid 30s and 26 years later it still sounds fresh Jewel should have been a much more recognised talent worldwide
Yes but she told too much truth to make it more mainstream.. I heard interesting stories about how Neil Young and another famous guy I forget helped her with her eventual mass exposure.. She was homeless for much of her youth and dealt with so much..
I'm grateful to realize the enlightening messages held within this lovely cd, or tape, or phone or tv video depending on your era(s) lol
So many classics came from the 90s

I’ve been crying quietly inside since the day I got Jewel’s Mom pregnant with Jewel and My family had me put in restraints for trying to go to an unknown location in Alaska to see her mother and her in 1973-74 after I heard she was born before I graduated from High School in 1975 at the age of 20 years old
I was given lithium and electric shock treatments for the wanting to know my wife and daughter Jewelry according to my family
Your thoughtless words are breaking my heart
That line always reminds me of those rough end-of-relationship fights where you're just saying awful, hurtful things to each other.

I was born in the early 90s and I have to say that I miss hearing songs like this one. Jewel has always been one of my favorite singers. She is a genuine artist, who writes and sings songs about GENUINE human emotion, unlike so many of those meaningless, hip-shaking songs we hear today but still call "music". One of the sad things about young people today (not to mention the generations still to come) is many of them don't even know what REAL MUSIC is all about. I've seen it in my own friends. They only want that loud, feel-good sound that makes them turn up their car stereos until the speakers burst. All they've ever heard is the hip-shaking, booty-bouncing, foot stomping nonsense they hear in clubs and on the radio. And you know what's even sadder than that? Most of the people singing those songs all sound very much alike! Honestly, it is hard to tell many of them apart when you listen to them. Where is that diversity in music we used to love so much?
all generations say that about the current generations. i was born in early 80's and i think modern music is crap. my parents said that about music i liked. i'm sure my grandparents thought the beatles were a loud racket and not music. truth be told, real music is from mozart, beethoven, strauss, vivaldi etc... i listen to them and realise anything else is just not music. however, jewel and others like her are actual modern musicians. in my opinion anyway.
sultanabran1 I think your right but I like all sort of music from classic to rock ,pop and rap... I think because music these days has so much money in the industry... it's all about fake artists and musician... Song are written for artists because they can sing, lip sinking at concerts, silly song with outrageous video clips that make songs popular and i tunes where 1 hit wonders can make a fortune... Critics didn't know how to rate the music from the 90's good or bad it doesn't matter because it was the last decade before the internet changed everything... Turning pop to top channel v use to play all types of music and so did many others underground, hits and lost musician now it all about the top 40 and that's every channel just about.. half the band's I listen to I can not found on i tunes
I was born in the late '50s. This is good music for any generation. There is much more to come. You must understand at your age, (and mine), certain music stands the test of time. Hold true to the music you love. It is your life, and oh, so short. No one can be you, and you can be no one else. The most beautiful music ever made is the music from within your heart.
Well said

this song, this artist reminds me of the life choice I made. Some how I blocked it out till now. My last child left home for a new life recently, and suddenly this song comes back to me. Very strange, but great song and vocals.
This song Moves Me Much Furthur than anyone, it’s a Message to Me, for You see Jewel is My Biological Child long story short
Her mother was my first love September 1,1973 in Toronto Canada and Atz Kilcher told me His Name was Otto Carroll and Lanedra Carroll was his Sister and he Gave Me his Sister’s Hand in Marriage because I had a Draft Card for the Vietnam War. When they went home to Alaska Lanedra refused to write down her address for me telling me I had to write to her or I’ll never hear from her again and in my failed attempts to go from Western NY to Alaska to See Lanedra Christmas 1973 My Family had me put in Dr’s Care and after I heard a whisper that the girl in Alaska had a daughter and named her Jewel my family returned me to Dr’s who gave me Lithium and Electric Shock Treatments spring of 1974 and I woke up out of a Drug induced insanity August 25,1974 after I won my third Special Olympic Medal and I’m StrangerBlue in Jewel’s Song Enter from the East

And to think this girl was homeless living out of a car, the world almost never knew who Jewel was and that would have been pretty sad. The sheer control she has over her voice is amazing.
@evilcowboy What she was homeless before?? Oh shit how could I have not known? It looks like I'm not a true fan of hers to not have known this. I feel so bad for what she went through. I now see her more as a human being than just your snobby wealthy famous musician now. I always thought she was the type of person that was raised with a silver spoon in her mouth you know the type of people that had it very easy through out life.
@@RussX5Z This girl was not homeless. Her and her father left their home in homer Alaska to try their singing abilities. She did travel with a partner after splitting with her dad and I'm sure she spent a lot nights under the stars but she was never homeless in the sense of the homeless people you see on the streets asking for money. You both do know who her father is and uncles are don't you.
@@1sonic687 alrighty then.
@@bigcity420 No, she was homeless for about year, after she got kicked out of the residence where she stayed, then she decided to live in her car while saving money to rent a new department, but then she went down with kidney decease and got fired for her consequent absence at work, that's when she found herself without any money and health insurance to the extent she nearly died of infection in the parking lot of a hospital because they wouldn't admit her because of that, but for a kind doctor spotting her lying on the floor and giving her the treatment she needed, she would have probably died. She also felt compelled to shoplift food in order to survive for a while, so yes, she was indeed homeless once.
And Oh! I edit this comment because I forgot to mention she had her car stolen, so she was left with nothing during that tough time in her life.

It's a great song.
I don't know where Family Guy got the joke that Ricky Martin was actually Jewel. I know that it was just a silly joke, but those kinds of jokes still need some sort of source reference in order to make it funny. Ricky Martin really being Jewel would only be a funny joke if, for example, people thought that Jewel was masculine to a degree or that Ricky Martin was feminine to a degree, but there's never been any hint of either of them being so, so the joke was in turn not really funny. Jewel was very beautiful and feminine in this video

After so many years, you still don't hear or see anybody doing a cover of this song that does it justice... the way Jewel originally delivered this song... vocally, it's one of those iconic songs from another decade that just seems to remain untouchable.
+rkmugen The singer/pianist of a local band from where I live covered it. It might change your mind. What do you think? /watch?v=gOpqD-4V580
SkaMasta097 She's good..... VERY GOOD, actually..... but she didn't do anything different with her cover to make it stand out (which I was hoping for), her cover was actually refreshing in a way, with her voice alone.
Yes, thank you! :D I agree, Katie is very talented at singing and piano. She has a Bachelor's degree in Music Media and has been writing songs since she was 16 (she's 31 now).
+rkmugen Why would you possibly want to hear someone other than Jewel sing her songs? You probably like karaoke which is ridiculously stupid. Who wants to see untalented amateurs sing iconic songs? Certainly not me.
Rex Craigo I think you just want to hurt and kill people if they don't fit your definition of perfection. Too extreme? Well, you certainly come across as an extremist. Take a chill pill before you suffer a stroke or end up killing innocent people.
When you are young you have the whole world ahead of you. Your dreams, hopes and expectations of a life to be are all seemingly attainable. Then weeks, months, years and eventually decades pass us by and all of a sudden we realize the dreams, hopes and expectations have not come to fruition and we are living our reality with no time to readjust or change the path in our lives like we could have done while we were young. For some life turned out amazing while many struggle with the reality of what they have built. Regrets are not worth it as those feelings are not worth the time it takes to think about them. The key is to realize you can change your life and from this moment forward set new realistic goals for what you can achieve with the time you think you have remaining. Time stands still for none! If you are watching life pass by then grab it and finish strong with what YOU want from what's remaining... good luck to all and don't finish with regrets of the things you should have done!

@James M Thank you for this comment
There are things people dont realize about Jewel, if they never read her poetry books. Shes a master of her art.
This song never fails to enthrall me.
20 years later this song is still hauntingly amazing.
nate liebherr time goes fast

I could see the whole thing playing in my head like a movie. But feeling her pain. She is so passionate
nate liebherr are Asian ppls existence supposed to be art w/ in themselves? 😠😡😤 Huh, huh, huh? ARE THEY? Like they're just objects to look at?! I'm jk. I wish I could do that. Never hafta actually talk to anyone and just get paid behind 50 layers of makeup. I need a makeup artist too
this song makes me love my wife and family
I miss sharing songs like these to someone who meant the world to me.
💜 (is it dumb I’m 31 and still am not ashamed to do this?)
who means the world to you? My Hoodie Girl? I know what you mean....that one person who makes you feel whole. Take care of yourself
So true
My mom just shared this song to me
Ohhh yeah thats excacly what i feel now
She's so talented! Her voice is like an angel
This is about the twentieth time I find out this song is originally from Jewel. Why do I always think and keep thinking someone else sung it first.
I'm 37 years old. This song just reminded of how much Jewel's music got me through the beginning of my life. Thank you Jewel.
Amazing how music can take us anywhere we need to go...be it mourning or sweet love memories

Melancholically beautiful ......
You took your coat off, stood in the rain
You're always crazy like that
And I watched from my window
Always felt I was outside looking in on you
You're always the mysterious one with
Dark eyes and careless hair
You were fashionably sensitive
But too cool to care
You stood in my doorway, with nothing to say
Besides some comment on the weather
In case you failed to notice, in case you failed to see
This is my heart bleedin' before you, this is me down on my knees
These foolish games are tearing me apart
And your thoughtless words are breakin' my heart
You're breaking my heart
You're always brilliant in the morning
Smoking your cigarettes and talking over coffee
Your philosophies on art, Baroque moved you
You loved Mozart and you'd speak of your loved ones
As I clumsily strummed my guitar
You'd teach me of honest things
Things that were daring, things that were clean
Things that knew what an honest dollar did mean
I hid my soiled hands behind my back
Somewhere along the line, I must've gone off track with you
Excuse me, think I've mistaken you for somebody else
Somebody who gave a damn, somebody more like myself
These foolish games are tearing me
You're tearing me, you're tearing me apart
And your thoughtless words are breaking my heart
You're breaking my heart
You took your coat off, stood in the rain
You're always crazy like that
I swear this album and Spirit, literally feel timeless... i still listen to it as if I didn't originally get the CDs like in middle school.
You & me both. I think she is a dying breed, I'd give all these shitty pop stars of today to get Jewel back on the charts any day. I friggin love her
Me too...I agree. Classics.
I feel the same way. I heard her sing when I was 6 years old and I've been a fan ever since. Always will be.

So respect her talent... I so miss the 90's when music had depth and meaning.
Not to pounce on ya, but there's some really great, meaningful music made last decade (thinking of to pimp a butterfly as an example)
Time traveled back to my youth. Stunning ❤
It's been 24 years ago since this song was released. Today, it still gives me the chills.
It's like, i can feel the emotion in this song. Perhaps because i know what it's like to have your heart broken.
You're so right. Its still beautiful. I just nroke my heart....thats why i remember this song again
BROKE 💔

This is one of my favorite songs from my favorite singer, Jewel. An elegy of a flawed relatonship.
"In case you failed to notice, in case you failed to see, This is my heart bleeding for you."

So many memories with this song 😊
Had to come back to the original. ❤
There is a LOT of innocence in this.. one reason why this is a GREAT song.
This song makes me feel like I'm looking into someone's diary or personal emails and reading about their heartbreak.
+MrRedstardude your feeling her heart pooring as she whimpers and trys to heal she should be a national anthem singer she is like princess dianna to the youth of america in all of us.....actualy the youth of jesus for his sacrafice and his pain....much love

Winning in the morning is part of that personality type.
I miss my teenage 2007~2008 days. Feeling so emotional tonight as i listen to this song, suddenly started missing all my old friends. I wish i could go back, it hurts me... 19th may 2024. 🥺🥺🥺🥺
This song hurts when you think about that person who broke your heart
'your thoughtless words are breaking my heart..'
My wordless thoughts broke someone's heart
Cathartically
My mom used to play this song when i was younger and this song reminds me of our broken relationship:(
I remember this song so well because I was going through a divorce at the time and it hit a nerve. I cry every time I hear it.
One of few songs/artists to give you chills every single time.

Man, I forgot how beautiful and soothing her voice is.
She's beautifully ethereal.
When i was a kid. I could NEVER have thought about me listening this. Just wasn’t that “cool kid music”. But these lyrics hit deep man❤
No one will ever have her voice. I miss the 90's so bad. I'd give my life if everyone else could go back.

I can’t believe this song is 28 years old! I was just 15 now I’m 42!
Time sneaks up on all of us.
@@D45VR indeed it does.
The thing that is beautiful about jewel is she had no foolish pride. She was vulnerable & humble. She shared that with her lovers through her music. That vulnerability is so rare in 2022. Everyone is so afraid to admit that love causes them pain but that they still need to be loved

What you mean? Literally every love song is about a broken heart these days.
Yessss

"Your philosophies on art, Baroque moved you, you loved Mozart"
Incredibly written lyrics and so eloquently sung.
fuckin epuc
Beautifully written but I can never sing this part. It is like a tongue twister
Such a beautiful line. I love poetry and that line is just magnificent.
"Somebody who gave a damn. Somebody more like myself."
I feel that.
Baroque moves no man - he was lying lol
As a 42-year old man, I was reminded of this song today. Even though my adolescence was spent being a fierce metalhead, there was also a secret part of me that loved Jewel. I doubt I told any of my friends 30ish years ago, but I didn't have to. It was for me to enjoy and that was all that mattered. I was listening to Pieces of You today when this track came on and I thought WAIT, this doesn't sound right. It was a totally different version than the one in my head. Did she pull a Taylor and re-record it? So I searched and found this. As soon as it started, I knew this was the 'right' version. The piano is tuned higher, it's longer, even the way she sings the verses is way different. Turns out, I only knew the radio version. Which was strange, because I had downloaded the whole album. No doubt from Napster, and I guess that one had the radio version of this song. Don't get me wrong, the album version is beautiful too, but they're almost completely different songs. Anyway, I will forever love this song and I don't care who knows now!
Heard it first time in 1996. Still beautiful.
This is my most favourite song from Jewel. Full of emotion. Masterpiece!
The yodeling queen 💕
