  • Since we removed the door panels and the car door handles I needed a way to open the doors on the endurance car. So in this video I show you how to install DIY door pulls with some steel cable so you can open the door and get out of the race car quickly!

    Cool seeing you talk about being prepared for fire.
    I would suggest adding a unique pull easily identifiable by feel, just in case the interior is suddenly filled with smoke. I prefer a sphere on the cable. It doesn't really get snagged on anything, there's no other spheres around to get it confused with, and even through gloves, you can tell when you've found the right shape in an emergency.
    Drill holes in a hard "squash ball", feed the cable through and continue exactly as described here in your vid.

    A nicopress requires several crimps on each sleeve. Perhaps three. You don't want to overdo it making the crimped sleeve smooth. That will actually reduce the strength of the fastening.

  • @iggysixx
    @iggysixx Před 2 lety

    Hey Chris, consider untangling the ends of the steel wire, and braiding the ends together before crimping.
    That's also how they do it when making loops in huuuge steel cables (for bridges / boats and such)
    Considering it's a safety feature, you want that thing as strong as possible.
    When you braid it; THAT is the connection, and where the strength is. (The crimp thingie just keeps it in place
    If your car is on fire, it's a bad time to find out you should have crimped a little harder ;)
    Also, good tip about the fire safety and all. It's not something you usually think of. ("This looks awesome. But what if this was on fire..?")
    Curious; what about seatbelts?
    Are they flame retardant at all?
    (It would seem pretty dangerous if they'd just melt onto your skin in an accident)

  • @RobinHagg
    @RobinHagg Před 2 lety

    Pulling the wire as a cross trough the look could put a little less strss on the crimp and +1 on safety. Maybe minimal extra but just anything

    Maybe add a pulley so you can pull inward or even back towards yourself.

    Wouldn't it be easier to open the door if the handle was coming from the front instead of back?

      It's pretty easy either way and since from the factory it's run from the back, it is simpler to have it a pull forward rather than rigging it so you need to pull it back. Good idea tho!
