I'm just of the opinion that if you can't do literally everything in literally any unit, even ones made up on the spot when you don't have the requisite manufactured tools, you're an idiot. 😛 I also strongly disbelieve in not promoting ambidexterity; sticking to only one system of units, and in a similar way allowing the skills of one hand to languish, are both luxuries of laziness that basically leave capable people needlessly vulnerable. I treat converting to Metric either as a courtesy of offering convenience-or alternately as a subtle way of insulting the whiners about units out of their comfort zone. 😜

I'm surprised that you went with the wrench method for the first lock. You could probably shim it pretty easily. Also, one of the features of a safe is how heavy it is and how it may be secured to a permanent structure (like the floor of a building). This is to prevent someone from just picking up the safe and carrying it out to wherever so that they can open it without issue. Also, if you used that much firepower to blow open the safe, keep in mind what it may do to the contents of the safe as it may render them useless. Burned money with holes and bits torn off of it because it was in an explosion doesn't spend that well, at least not without arousing suspicion.

It may be relatively easy to get through most locks, but that doesn't mean they're useless. They deter opportunistic criminals, and non-criminals. It's much more of a commitment to break open a locked box to see what's inside, than it is to see that it's unlocked and take a peek. This means people are much less likely to do it, even if they know how to open locks already.

Way I figure it, locks are like armor for whatever you're trying to keep safe. And just like armor, there's degree of protection. Yeah, a truly determined thief will always find a way break a lock, but most thieves are opportunists. Your average thief will ALWAYS go for the unlocked door over the locked door because it's easier. So a lock is less to keep your stuff thief proof and more to act as thief deterrent, with different grades of locks offering different levels of resistance

Even most lockpickers will tell you that you don't need some unpickable nightmare of a lock in most circumstances - you pick the right lock for your purposes. If you're locking and unlocking something multiple times a day and the lock is in an area with plenty of witnesses then you don't want some cumbersome heavy duty lock that is a lockpickers nightmare - you'd be much better off with a more simple lock that is easy and fast to use because odds are nobody is going to try and pick it even if they can.

For this, wrap the bundle in a roll or two of duck tape as tightly as possible- that'd probably allow it to fully combust.

Great incremental testing on the safe. You could see the principle of how a blast works - exerting force against less resistance (the air), vs. the door. Next time, put the fire crackers on as you did, but put the safe face on the ground, so you ave the firecracker between the ground and the safe door. I'm thinking 3 firecrackers at most would blow that door that way. More force will be channeled towards the door.

Right. No-one has ever claimed that locks are impregnable. The point is just to put off a particular level of thief, with "particular level" being basically proportionate to the value of goods being protected. The cheap lock in this video is the kind used to, say, secure clothes in a gym locker. Sure, a thief could get past it with basic tools, but he'd have to be willing to risk being spotted using those tools when he doesn't even know if there's anything of value in the locker. A very bad risk-reward deal (though of course it must happen sometimes).

That safe is likely a lever lock. Your key, as it's turning with the various heights, shifts a series of plates into position. The plates each have a hole and channel in the middle of them, with the latch passing through the hole on each. When the plates are properly aligned with each other, the channels line up to create a pathway for the latch to release through. Still pickable, just a different arrangement and geometry of the mechanism inside.

after recommendation from LPL with not one but TWO videos on the kryptonite evolution series 4 bike chain lock I got that one - and although it does seem a quite secure lock it fails at bad weather: the disc retainer cylinder is already problematic and due to rather tight tolerances if it gets below freezing the lock just completely .. well .. locks up and can't be opened with the key anymore - so, as it's winter right now here - now my bike is permantly locked to the pole at my front door and although I do have the key I can't unlock it due to the lock is frozen - and I guess waiting till it thaws it will then rust shut ... so yea, the kryptonite is quite a good look - but only for inside use defeating its purpose as a bike chain lock

If you are picking a padlock keep in mind it's location and "messaging", the best easily available padlock for most people is probably going to be an Abloy 362 with a Protec 2 core, however this is a very attractive looking lock, the huge Squire is likewise very curious looking if intimidating: these locks are for threating potential thieves with a bad time and give the suggestion of additional security expenditures, perhaps on cameras or alarm systems: they're what lock nerds call a "screamer". But if you want a lock for a storage unit then you don't want your lock to stand out and suggest valuable contents behind it, right? For this I recommend the Abus 20/70, it looks just like every other steel discus padlock ever made but actually contains the very difficult to pick Abus Plus core and it's honestly a steal at 40USD.

@@J.C... PIcking is only necessary if a power tool can't be used, which means a secure area in general. My point was the lock should match the context of that security, in a group you don't control you should avoid attention, but on your own property products that imply additional expenditures help scare away an initial attempt at theft. Mostly has to do with renting storage units and honestly the best thing you can do there is a gated facility with alarmed doors. Honestly the best security for the longest time was a fake "Brinks" or "ADT" sign but post-internet thieves have those figured out, they can also wirelessly jam stuff like SimpliSafe from being able to call the police. Literally just today: New sidechannel attack can hear the shape of your fingerprints and is improving at a geometric rate. I think locks and keys aren't going anywhere for a long time lol.

A key safe outside a house is easy to defeat….
But you can smash a window on the same house and gain entry to the house in about 1 second.
So if you want to burgle the house ignore the key safe, and smash a window, it’s far quicker, and works every time.. . . .

I’ve been locked out of my house and have had to call a “locksmith” (a retired burglar who turned his skills into a business. Really nice guy) twice. First time, around 2012, he slid a card down the side of the door and it just popped open. Second time, actually earlier this week, it was a little trickier as we had a “security lock”. Stainless steel, with no door handle on the outside, only openable by key. He literally took a plank of wood and a plug extension cord, pushed it through the letterbox, fiddled around for a few minutes and we were in

Locks buy time, the better the quality the longer it takes to open them but in the end they can always be opened. The Squire padlock requires thinner picks than those used in the U.S., which is why the pick gets stuck inside the padlock.

Lol I got arrested when I was 19. I simply opened the handcuffs barehanded by jiggling them while applying pressure. The funny thing is that should've been the end of it since I was still in the back of a squad car, but apparently the window regulator was shot because after a couple kicks the back window just SHOOP dropped straight down into the door, letting me crawl out and bolt. Cops were stuck in traffic at a red light so they were kinda screwed. Not sure what happened but they didn't even try to catch me.

That firecracker you have in the video is called Megatron. It have 5 grams of gun powder in it and i honestly think i would not brake the safe with that " small " amount of gun powder in them. Another fact if you tape them togeder one will brake the other one around it and not blowing out at same time. 5 grams of gp " gun powder " is small amount for czech because here they sell 50-300g firecrackers ( illegaly ) and that would do the job. the safe had to be easy to brake.

3:33 The amount you need to move the dials depends on lock. You specific lock required 5 but it's much easier to just try up to 10 times to get the lock open. Try if the lock is open already. If not, add 1 to every wheel and try again. After repeating this up to 9 times, the lock will open.
