    I love your no nonsense, get on with it approach!
    It's always tempting to hang onto fading crops when they still have a little more to offer, and spoil the new ones by holding them in their pots too long. Your experience shines through and your timing seems spot on.

      Thanks Wendy, I always try and keep my focus on just growing food for the family, rather than trying to impress anyone. That works well for me since I don't have much time. Being prepared to sacrifice the old, to optimise the new is key to growing well. Timings are always a challenge, because weather is inherently unpredictable, so you need to be flexible and ready to adapt your plans to fit reality, as I'm fond of saying, a plan never survives contact with reality : All the best - Steve

      @@SteveRichards I'm not sure if John Lennon stole this expression but 'Life Is What Happens When You're Busy Making Other Plans' rings true.
      All the best.

      I'm not much of a planner, more of systems designer, which is more efficient. I try to focus on the big picture. I have aphantasia so I can't visualise, which makes planning very difficult : All the best - Steve

    What an awesome flower display on those brassicas. Glad no clubroot though 💪. Have a wonderful weekend, Ali 🌞🇨🇦

      They’re great aren’t they, I still have two beds in full flower for 2 weeks before they need to come out so the peppers can go in and we get to enjoy their more modest flower display

    Oh gosh, the brassica looked stunning. I couldnt have ripped them all out. The pollinators really love them and they have so little food after all the cold and wet.
    The weather suddenly changed yesterday here in Wales. The polytunnel was 42 C at one point....yikes !!!

    • @SteveRichards
      @SteveRichards  Před 2 měsíci

      I still have loads of flowering brassicas though, so the pollinators are happy

    A lot of your videos can get quite technical\analytical . It is great to see a simple video of popping fantastic looking seedlings in the ground !

      Sometimes everything lines up, I have the time, there's no aircraft doing loop the loops above me and no gardeners strimming or mowing and then I can film myself gardening! : All the best - Steve

    Wow, those brassica look pretty. I'm still harvesting shoots from the Brussels and PSB, mine aren't flowering yet. Having said that they're almost there. I chuck the brassica flowers into salad bowls and keep picking until I need the space

      Me too, I need the space, but also watch out for cabbage aphid on them, it starts there and spreads

    Steve just a quick question do you put weed membrane under the wood chips in the paths? Thanks

    • @SteveRichards
      @SteveRichards  Před 2 měsíci +2

      I did Richard but only because I had terrible problems with bind weed and marestail 8 years ago, when I got the plot. Now I wouldn't do it, I'd just put down 3-4 inches of chip, which is enough to suppress most weeds : All the best - Steve

    How much of your plot has brassicas in 😃

    • @SteveRichards
      @SteveRichards  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Almost half in spring, calabrese, PSB, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, radish, turnips, rocket and Asian greens. But almost none in summer. I try and get all the brassicas harvested before the clubroot starts and then switch over to melons, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers etc until October when I plant lettuce, spinach etc. the. Brassicas are interplanted into the spinach in Jan/feb : all the best - Steve

    Lettuce in the ground wouldn't survive a day because of the slugs😢

      I’ve worked on the slugs and snails every week through winter and spring now, so it’s not too bad here

      @@SteveRichards I've been doing much the same and thankfully after a few dry days now (gloucestershire) I have managed to turn the soil and hunt out the last few hiding snugs and snails; taking special care to check around larger pots and and hiding spots they are known to love. Overall an ongoing battle but I too can now safely (reasonably safely) plant lettuces without cover moving forward.
      Yes, wet week forecast for next week so we shall have to stay on our toes.
      Great update Steve. All the best.
