Ep84: Genius solutions for allotment & garden problems in May | Potatoes, peas & more

- In this week's vlog I am trying to find solutions to some of my allotment and home garden problems, including
- where to plant a gazillion main crop potatoes
- what to do with two bays full of compost that is infested with bindweed
- how to support my peas
- where to plant the next lot of peas!
- where to plant my ranunculus
- what to do with my sprawling taunten deane kale
- and how to save my carnations
We also take a little trip to RHS Malvern Spring Show, where you might recognise some familiar faces... we then talk carnivorous plants, blue sausage shrubs, and bargain salvias.
I'm using new editing software this week so hopefully the video quality is better - but bear with me while I learn the intricacies of the programme, esp with audio.

Oof, I was holding my breath when you were trying to take your gutter shelf of peas down, Kerry. I knew you’d get them in the pot just fine but getting that gutter down… Holding my breath and biting my nails! So nice to see all those friendly faces with you at Malvern, and all the pumpkins they shared with you!
Haha. I know!! I did not think that one through 🤣 Malvern was great and I'm hopeful I will have pumpkins this year! 🙏

Yeh I liked seeing Maiju just tipping one out when she actually needed them rather than having to do a huge harvest and then store. Haha. Thinking about the potatoes in the shower, cooking, dog walking, working, sleeping... ALWAYS THINKING ABOUT POTATOES! It really was nice to meet everyone. You have a great week Ali ❤️

Great video Kerry! Those window boxes came in clutch! What a great find! I didn't know that garden centres had an area with free old pots. Those flowers look stunning and deserve to be shown off.
Thank you. Not all do but they totally should. It's such an easy initiative. They are beautiful - I hope the ones I put all the effort into come up just as stunning but I suspect not! 🤣

18 buckets Maiju! 🤣🙈 But who doesn't love potatoes! Yes I didn't end up filming all that much at Malvern. It was all a bit of a whirlwind. I'll do better at gardeners world live! @jennywrenslife has a video just out with lots of footage. It was good but I still prefer the autumn show.

Same! And walking the dog. And it is such a relief to find a solution and make a decision on it lol. I spend so much time dithering about the 'best' thing to do and in the meantime poor plants languish in their pots desperate to go out!!

Just sat down ready to watch earlier in the day and was told to head to A & E!!! Hence late to watch and comment. So 4 hours up there and no internet meant I had to wait to watch.

So so many bargains, from pots to more plants 🪴 definitely the way to go with the potatoes!!! I’ve still got 12 main crop to get in buckets too so it was handy to see how many you were putting in each bucket.
Had a couple of hours nap and now wide awake and catching up on videos 🤗

Hello Kerry, I love the garden center they have bins to drop off empty pots and then folks can come and take them just great for me. I had so much fun watching as you identified the problems and took action to remedy them. You just really looked so happy and joyous. The Malvern Spring Festival looked to be a lot of fun. I left most of my dhalias in my garden over winter, and they are producing leaves now and look really healthy, so I am going to leave them in the garden this winter too! That peony was absolutely gorgeous!
I've had a poke about where I left some in but haven't seen any evidence of new growth yet. Will keep checking. It wasn't a particularly harsh winter and they're in spots that drain well ... We will see! It would be a lot easier to just be able to leave in the ground, that's for sure!

Ranunculus corms might survive if you put a deep mulch on them. A fleece when temperatures get quite cold. It depends on what the surrounding plants, structures are. If there's a wall, bricks, rocks which can hold what little heat the winter sun gives, you have a microclimate for the corms.
That's useful thank you. These weren't mulched but it is a fairly sheltered garden and this winter has been fairly mild. Having said that, no sign of the overwintered dahlias as yet...
Oh the miscanthus grass - it was so promising but alas those pesky slugs seem to be getting the better of it. As you say more of a deterrent than a solution - we can only keep trying! Can you believe I still haven't got all my Malvern bargains in?! I'm hoping to top up a few more this weekend at Gardener's World - hope I'll see you there! Thanks for the mention! x
Oh I know me too 🙈 got the hare's tale grasses in this week and all my own propagated salvias but still got to find places for the Malvern salvias! Yes I'll be there Sunday, as will Clare 👍
I had so much slug damage with potatoes in the ground and you always leave and miss a few. Those pots are what I grow in and swear by them
It'll be really interesting to see the difference from last year. I think it was the varieties too tho - certain varieties were much more munched than others last year. I'm nervous about the ones in the woodchip!!

Aw thank you Wendy. In truth, i am a 'one thing a day' person. If I had my way, that's how it would be! 🤣 I don't like being busy at all and I do my best to avoid it! But yes, right now it's a busy time and I feel soooo tired 😂 I'm looking forward to my two weeks of annual leave in July!

Another great update Kerry. Good idea to plant potatoes in buckets. Doug's been looking after ours on plot 2 . Handy to have freebies including buckets and fencing for your peas. Slugs are a right pest, wish they would eat the weeds instead of our plants! Your home garden is looking really pretty 😍

Maybe more garden centres need to collect used pots for people to take. Judging by what you found there must be a lot going into landfill.
Too true. I think it's a great initiative. And takes no effort from the staff - just need a bay or two outside.
I watched this out on my balcony on the tablet with sun reflections, so didn't notice the HD until you mentioned it. But yeah, great tip for youtubers. I did however notice the silent movie music when you struggled with the peas in the greenhouse, that was hilarious and then so brilliantly smooth slided into the tray. Another great dog at the plot moment. 🤩

oh i so wish i could go to a big gardening show it looks like you had so much fun, oh my solution to growing tatters was building tatter towers out of fencing and it uses a lot to straw bedding very little compost its no dig and u just turf them when u harvest and its a ready mulch for the space where you grew them I got no beastie damage super clean spuds and they were amazing
Hi Bev. Ooh I've seen those on Huw Richards' channel. I do have chicken wire, so could try that. Maybe next year! I have enough straw from the rabbits... I like that idea a lot.
@@dogontheplot hi kerry and dorrie lol yes mine are made with thick plastic fence mesh with fairly big holes and the tatter leaves grow thru those and its al nice and snug to keep your spuds safe from critters and the soil is so rich and dark when you lift it up to find your golden hidden treasure lol

Hey. Just found your channel. The first video ive watched and you've helped with with my fungus gnat problem. I used nemotodes but it hasn't worked very well, so i will be heading to the garden centre tomorrow to get a carnivorous plant 😀
I had such a huge problem with them from all my seed sowing, as you cant water from the bottom.

Welcome! And so pleased to help. I've noticed a few of them on the tiny hairs on the leaves so it seems to be doing the job. I don't know what volume of gnats one little plant can handle 😂 but here's hoping 🤞

At the risk of repeating myself another great video 😊. I love your enthusiasm and sheer joy you get from growing. I couldn't help shouting to you though when moving the pallets and digging in the compost heaps to mind your back!! I don't know how you find the time to fit in all you do and have a a full time job, my energy levels are slowing down as I get older and the aches get worse, but I still plod on because I love it so much and to see someone else who shares that enthusiasm is great.
I hope when you were at the show you managed to buy some chips and eat them out of newspaper just to show Danny that you aren't as posh as he thinks 😂😂(only joking) it has been lovely to see all the photos being shared by the CZcamsrs, I would have loved to have been there and met them all but having no car anymore it was a bit of an awkward journey for me and would have involved an overnight stay. Maybe one day I'll get to meet you all.
Hi Liz. To be honest I'm not sure how I'm managing it all either 😬 - I'm looking forward to my annual leave in July!! Haha I'm not sure I proved I wasn't posh because I turned up with homemade sourdough cinnamon rolls ! 🤣 Gardeners world live is the next meet up show, on the Sunday. I really enjoyed it last year. I'm going with my mum, aunt and cousin again ☺️

it’s a RHSflower show for gardeners unlike Chelsea which I think is a show for people who employ gardeners

Tuesday - Saturday
10am - 6.30pm
SUNDAY 10am - 5.30pm
I used to go with my dad every year I have such lovely memories it has specialist growers and there’s plenty of room to move unlike Chelsea which I find very claustrophobic and you can’t take plants away ???? Like who goes to a show for plants and can’t come home with a trolley full ?? Hampton court has plenty of booked parking to so you can fill the car up 😂 I’m like you plantaholic to date 62 house plants in my one bed house 32 in my three room spa and I’ll take in any sick plants and revive

Why was the garden centre throwing those containers? They look fine. Are they cracked or something?
Should say underneath the size I think. They look like 30 litres or maybe even slightly larger. I paid Around £3.30 each for my 30 litre ones which I think is pretty cheap considering garden centres sell pot saucers for that amount. So to get them for nothing is great.
Ah it isn't the garden centre throwing them away. The bays are there for customers. You drop off pots you no longer want so other ppl can use them. We've picked up some really great pots over the years, inc pretty indoor ones.
