  • Have you ever wondered "Why should I change my brake fluid?" or been curious what brake fluid does? This is actually a very important service that many people ignore because they don't realize what can happen with old fluid.
The short version: Old brake fluid boils at a lower temperature. You make a panic stop with old fluid and it takes longer.
For a longer version you can read some of our articles here.

You don't actually need to change it often. Even quite rarely. The humidity does build up a little (this is the colour change) but only so much over time. You probably only need to replace it 5-8 years

Thank you for answering that question. This is exactly what I was looking for. Is it just the amount of time that goes by, or do I need to change it after a certain amount of miles as well? I drive about 40,000 miles a year. So should I change it every 150 thousand miles? Or should I still be good to change it every eight years? Thanks.

I wish I had known this years ago! I could have come to a complete stop in the stop box at the end of that autocross ;-)

I am watching this after accidentally pouring wiper fluid into my brake fluid reservoir. 😶😣 humans be flawed, but hey I now know I need to change my brake fluid after getting it drained of wiper fluid. Learnt two things in the process. 😢🙃

No reason to feel bad about making a mistake, it’s often the absolute best way to learn! Kudos to you for being brave enough to try to tackle it on your own.
Wiper fluid is mostly water, so it will quickly saturate your brake fluid, but it’s an easy process to flush the fluid out with new fluid and you shouldn’t have any issues once you replace your fluid.
I’ve seen situations where power steering fluid gets into a brake system and swells all the rubber seals. That one ended with most of the brake system needing replacement and it wasn’t pretty.

@@KindredAutomotive Thanks for the reply. Soothes my nervous system to know its an easy fix of flushing the brake fluid.
