    I’m glad you told the truth about DOT 5 brake fluid. Many guys with older cars that aren’t driven daily swear DOT 5 is the only way to go. Because it doesn’t mix readily with water, if/when water gets into the system, it can collect at a low point, like a caliper. That water will, over time, cause corrosion.

    My favourite brake fluid is made by a brand called Bendix, its dyed blue so its super easy when you're doing fluid changes because you can literally see the fluid change colour to blue so you know its the fresh stuff, also good for figuring out exactly where leaks are coming from

    My brake fluid boiled once. Foot went straight to the floor coming down from about 80mph quickly in my 300zx turbo. Learned to flush it out every couple of years and use good fluid from that point on since brake fluid absorbs water like a sponge. Got close to death that day!

    • @luisloks
      @luisloks Před 6 lety

      well thats what you get for riding like an ass. Brake should never reach that level on normal driving. it seems you were going full douche on the highway switching lanes like crazy.

    • @HoosierDaddy_
      @HoosierDaddy_ Před 6 lety +1

      il Lock + no. Actually I was on a racetrack. I'm a driving instructor also. The brake fluid was contaminated with water. good try trolling and being a miserable human being though. Do you have anything constructive to add to any car related issues or do you just assume everyone drives like you. And I know you are that aggressive driver. Everyone who bitches about them is.

    • @frankhoward7645
      @frankhoward7645 Před 6 lety

      Brad. I've always subscribed to the theory that DOT 3 is fine for the street and DOT 4 is for the race track. I understand that your fluid was contaminated with water and that led to the failure, but tell me what you were using, DOT 3 or DOT 4?

    • @HoosierDaddy_
      @HoosierDaddy_ Před 6 lety

      Jess John + not at all. They sell test strips to see how much moisture is in there. Will use them on every car in the shop. And it's so cheap, we just usually throw it in as part of a 2-year or 30000 mile service. If it's fine, leave it alone.

    • @HoosierDaddy_
      @HoosierDaddy_ Před 6 lety

      Frank Howard + this was many many years ago. When I was 16. I failed to properly change all the fluids before I had a fun track day so I paid the price. Back then it was most likely. 3. This would have been in the early 90s. It was terrible and I should have known better. And I agree with you on that 3 and 4 I just use what the car calls for. You can never go wrong. Just make sure it's not full of water. That cap is left off for 5 minutes it seems like it absorbs it like a sponge.

    A friend of mine was trying to clean up brake fluid after a wheel cylinder failed. He was using gas which would not work. I told him its not a petroleum based, that brake fluid is water soluble just hose it off. Well after another 1/2 hr, he finally did and it worked. Being an engineer he can't stand being wrong, but after a while he admitted he didn't understand. when I told him it was glycol based he just stared at me. It's one of the reasons brake systems need to be flushed every brake job. Yes I know hardly anyone dose that, but they should.

    DOT 3 should be just fine for most "normal" drivers. If you do a lot of excessive or hard braking, then definitely use DOT 4 - 5.1.

    • @Sseltraeh89
      @Sseltraeh89 Před 6 lety +7

      Yeah, but you know what they say - better safe than sorry. I don't know how are the prices in US, but here where i'm from, Dot 3 isn't really any cheaper than Dot 4, so while Dot 5.1 is still considered expensive premium fluid, there's no need to run Dot 3 anymore, not even on old Pre-Dot 4 cars. You never know when you happen to drive down steep hill with lot of braking involved and you certainly don't want to risk boiling your fluid and loosing brakes just to spare some 2% on retail price...

      enrique torres no because, the base it's made from attracts some moisture. It does have a higher boiling point however.

    I flushed my brakes fully , even removing the master cylinder.
    I used DOT3 from 99cent store partially as I ran low as I was finishing. 2003 Focus.
    Works fine.
    I also use full synthetic from there too...various reputable brands...$2.99/Qt.
    Car runs great.

      Buuboi214 I like chrisfix as well. I’m subscribed to him but I look at experience with being the best. Scotty has done it for 50 years or more. Chris is probably 25 years old? I’m not saying chrisfix is bad though. He’s one hell of a mechanic

      christopher bougher no reason for name calling here. I literally defended both Chris and Scotty. Scotty has longer experience working with cars which is why I said he’s the best on CZcams. But Chris is also good and knows what he’s talking about
