  • UPDATE: We heard back from Ford with an update to the issue we encountered. The truck you see here is a pre-production unit. Ford inspected the truck, identified the calibration issue, and said the calibration will be fixed when first production trucks start shipping to dealers within the next several weeks (end of May or in June 2018). When asked, Ford did not provide specifics of the calibration issue. However, the company said that all customer trucks will have this issue corrected.

      Mozeby Ford and LandRover designed this diesel engine in a joint venture and the 10 speed transmission was a joint venture with Ford and GM, I believe. The Power Stroke team used some of the innovations with the 6.7 and retrofit them on the 3.0. It will definitely take a year or two to work the kinks out and hopefully add an exhaust brake.

    90% of people on here don’t seem to understand the difference between 3mpg and 5mpg.It doesn’t sound like much but it’s a huge fuel savings over just 100miles. 33gallons used vs 20gallons used. For people that actually tow allot that is a massive fuel savings.

      This is true, and same holds true for 18 vs 25 MPG. To compare to a car the difference is between 35 MPG and 50 MPG in a car. The Key question though is , WILL it get the rated MPG unlike the rest of their engines. Remember the 47/47/47 that Ford had to walk back and send checks out to every person who bought the FFH?

    • @mutt2jeff

      That’s only going uphill. I would gladly trade the 2mpg over a 8 mile grade for being able to keep the truck going the speed limit, instead of 45 mph. Your not gonna tow 100 miles up hill.

    Big safety issue. You guys actually had a runaway situation. After the failure and the loss of engine braking, speed started to increase and was only being controlled by the brakes. If and when the friction brakes overheat and fade you have a true runaway and need to hit the gravel pit if one is available.

    • @rik999
      @rik999 Před 6 lety +11

      IMHO transmissions in a vehicle that tows should never lock out the lower gears EVER. Set bonging alarms, flashing dash lights, vibrating seats and steering wheels, but NEVER essentially force coasting in top gear (or neutral).

    Tempted to suggest that you add one of those OBD2 readers to your test vehicles and monitor engine oil temp/pressure and transmission temperature while leaving the readings you want like mpg on the dashboard. Pretty obvious nothing wrong with engine or transmission, so I suspect there is engine over rev protection system built into the programming for the engine and transmission.

    The fuel mileage was very impressive especially considering the unladen MPG is also leaps ahead of the gassers. It really adds up. Guessing a 2.5 year recoup of the additional upgraded diesel cost to start seeing savings plus the better towing experience in general the whole time.
    Kudos TFL for the second run where you confirmed an issue because sometimes it's a one-off. Not that this kills my thoughts of getting one of these units, but it's good to know and adds to my trust of your reviews. It's between the 2019 Eco-diesel RAM and this unit for me in about 10 months, so I imagine we will learn a lot more by then about the Ford mini-Power Stroke engines in the F-150.

      Not to say that this would be my number 1 choice for a half ton motor but consider that as mpg gets closer to zero each mpg you can gain becomes more significant. For instance, you say who cares about 2 mpg but another way to look at it is the powerstroke get 30-35% better fuel economy while towing then the ecoboost. If I was moving a trailer long distances I think a lot of people might be willing to sacrifice a bit of speed for 35% better fuel mileage

      So 5.4 mpg compared to a gas truck giving 3.5 mpg.
      That is a 54% improvement in miles per gallon. Yes it is slower up that hill at maximum payload but how many owners will tow at max payload often up that extreme grade. Probably most owners will use these F150's just like a car, one person and unloaded not towing most of the time.
      Those wanting to tow heavy trailers regularly will probably choose an F250 for a similar purchase price but heavier running costs.

  • @sreilly
    @sreilly Před 6 lety +5

    Some sensor probably saw a fault, or the gauges on the dash were reading incorrectly as far as trans temp or engine temp. It's like Fords with their sensitive coolant level sensors. If the coolant level is even a millimeter off of where it should be, it throws the vehicle into limp mode. I had a friend of mine that had her 2013 Escape go into limp mode because of low coolant in the bottle after it was changed out, and after awhile the car pegged the temp gauge when it wasn't overheating and wouldn't allow her to move the vehicle in drive at all! Not sure this is safe, especially if something happens and you're in an undesirable location.
    I ended up having to use my code scanner to reset the codes after putting in the proper amount of coolant. Same deal with this issue. Limp mode made the truck go no more than 7 mph on a highway?!? Not sure I find that safe. I know other vehicle makes where their 'limp mode' doesn't allow the vehicle to go above 55 mph. Too many sensors on vehicles these days.

    • @sreilly
      @sreilly Před 6 lety +1

      Agreed 100%. Some sensor probably saw a fault, or the gauges on the dash were reading incorrectly. It's like Fords with their coolant level sensors. If the coolant level is even a millimeter off of where it should be, it throws the vehicle into limp mode. I had a friend of mine that had her 2013 Escape go into limp mode because of low coolant in the bottle after it was changed out, and after awhile the car pegged the temp gauge and wouldn't allow her to move the vehicle in drive at all! I ended up having to use my code scanner to reset the codes after putting in the proper amount of coolant. Same deal with this issue. Limp mode made the truck go no more than 7 mph on a highway?!? I know Chevy's 'limp mode' doesn't allow the vehicle to go above 55.

      @destin-diesel.9495 Před 6 lety +1

      Don Leamon. Yes and no. It was probable still slipping? The lock-up clutch can only hold a certain amount of over torque. Or over speed. And they said it was reving awkwardly. I think it could be slipping.

    • @erikkovacs3097
      @erikkovacs3097 Před 6 lety +1

I think it was locked because I had only 7k downgrade engine braking without locking my torque converter and my tranny jummped to 245 in only a few min and my 3/4 ton dodge has a larger radiator than this F150. I think limo mode was because of engine overspeed. It was at redline after all.

      @TheDaltonmichaels Před 6 lety +8

      he has a point about the speed though. If you slow down the Gas trucks going up , the economy might equalize. Id be willing to bet real money the diesel does better flat land towing. But going up hill with a 10 speed transmission maybe the engine doesn't matter nearly as much if you equalize the speed going up the hill. But ill make another assumption. The gas motors all make their power at higher rpm and need leverage to maintain speed. if you slow down the gas trucks to match the diesel speed you have to assume it will drive in 1 or 2 gears lower making the RPM about the same as it was when going faster. So same RPM slower speed , longer time driving = worse fuel mileage at slower speed. This is just a SWAG.

    • @erikkovacs3097
      @erikkovacs3097 Před 6 lety +11

      Like he said it's not about putting up big numbers it's about efficiency. So no it won't look impressive until you start to look at efficiency. My TDI averages 45mpg highway in a ~3500lb car. That's without meeting EPA standards in a much lighter car. Performance wise (i.e. 0-60) the TDI is not doing much better either. All the small diesel trucks are meh but I'm glad they are doing them. The problem is they released it at a time when gas is cheap and the gasoline engines have made huge improvements. The thing is last time gas shot up they got caught with their pants around their ankles. Now they have a solution as gas is poised to spike. I definitely see these jumping in sales if that's the case. I think the second generations will look much better in terms of performance (and even first gens once modders start tuning them) with maybe little efficiency improvements. It's amazing that just a year ago it seemed like VW had killed the diesel car industry in the US for light duty and now it's back stronger than ever. So yeah it's unimpressive but at least it's there.

      I think the first one was fine.
      Because even though companies hand-select vehicles to send out for reviews, to make sure(try to anyways) there are no problems and the vehicle is perfect... "Shit happens"
      But now 2 times for the same reviewers in under 12 months? That's not a "it happens" that's a pattern.
      I don't think TFL has had any brand new vehicles fail that weren't Fords.
      Furthermore, people can't even go, "oh well the engine is new" Because it's not. this exact engine has existed overseas in this exact form for over a decade.

      TheSkiingJeep - except it is new.... also the tranny is new. And this is not a production vehicle.. I wouldn’t call this failing the truck went back and completed the test? It simply went into limp mode..

    Isn't this the 2nd Ford to break on the test. They need an award just for that.

    Any chance you guys could do the gauntlet with one of the 2011-2014 f150 6.2? Curious to see how it'd do.

    Had that warning show up several times on my 2017 250 powerstroke. I'd then lose my cruise control and hill descent. Would have to stop the truck and restart it to clear the codes. The truck will be going down the road. Should have never bought a Ford. There will be a 2019 duramax dually sitting in the driveway this fall.

      Scott A thinking you got that backwards.... you know nothing. I've had numerous brand new vehicles...chevy/GMC and Dodge with very minimal issues. This new ford has been back to the dealership 6 times within 5 months and now have to go back again as the shift indicator will show downshifting to 4th, but still stuck in 6th. First brand new Ford I've purchased and will be the last. Know the whole story next time before you run your mouth!

    Super disappointing with this diesel.. I’m a ford guy to the bone.. have two fords in my driveway with no problems.. but been wanting to go from my 7.3 to a newer truck and was super stoked for this diesel option. But looks like the coyote is the way to go still.

    The ram ecodiesel you tested did 9 minuets and 3 seconds and 6.1 mpg witha a little lighter load.

    still would buy a ford lol. this test is a tough test. 95% of people are not going to drive a mile above sea level and running it clear to the floor, so obviously the gas mileage is going to be better. I would say pulling a couple thousand lbs. i.e. mower, fishing boat. running about 65-70, is going to put it around 18ish mpg or more. which is pretty good. Ford didn't break down, it just had another issue, the vehicle at least protected it self, but it definitely needs to be addressed. It was able to drive still, so i dont get how that is ford breaking down. I think they should have made the motor tougher.

    You know, I’d like to know exactly what happened that caused it to go into limp home mode. Why it went into it and if it’s even a Powertrain fault or just a computer bug or the testers fault (Not to blame TFL but we all can make mistakes now and then)

    It happens, could be any company. Give them a year or two as I'm sure it'll be fine. Great work fellas, thx for showing the ups and downs if real world testing. I learn more from the misadventures them the more scripted videos.

      True, it does happen and it could be any company. But for the record, mishaps like this and failure have only happened to Ford. F-250 gas blow up and F-150 diesel limp mode

    Would not be surprised if it is a programming issue, between the ABS, ABS pump and control module interaction with the automatic gearbox and engine management systems. Have had a Ford with similar issues, and when the communication breaks down, or not in expected parameters, this type of situation can happen.
