2017+ Ford F-150 Ten Speed 10R80 Transmissions: Are Skip Shifts Normal?

  • In this video we check to see if it is normal for the new Ford 10 speed transmissions to randomly skip gears?
    Official Statement from Ford:
    Upshift Gear Sequence
    At times the 10-speed transmission may skip gears when the vehicle starts from a complete stop. This is normal and desired behavior.
    At part pedal when acceleration is brisk, single step upshifts would result in very frequent shift events (very short time in gear). Double step upshifts results when a longer time is spent in gear.
    However, at light pedal or road load, single step upshifts will occur. The small 10-speed gear steps allow the engine speed to drop to lower values than it would in the 6-speed transmission; providing for the best fuel economy. In contrast, when the 10-speed transmission is at heavy or max pedal, the small steps keep the engine closer to the horsepower peak for best performance.
    Down shift Gear Sequence
    At times the 10-speed transmission may skip gears when the vehicle down shifts to a complete stop. This is normal and desired behavior.
    The same skip shift strategy that is used for the upshift may be applied during down shift.

      They skipped years because they're not needed for accelerating. They're only needed for maintaining speed to put the RPMs at the appropriate speed for best fuel economy balance with power requirements.

      i have a 2018 f-150 2.7l ecoboost it’s always good upshifting except sometimes from 2-3 or 3-4 cent remember it’s alittle more noticeable then the rest i think usually when cold but downshifting is sometimes i get random clunking noises i believe to be the solenoids hanging up and when slowing down to a stop when it goes from 3rd to second to first or from 3rd to first when just about stopped it makes a clunking sound everytime maybe you can verify if there’s a later software update or something i have had it updated once and it solved the issue for about a year if i drive it in sport mode it never does it it’s perfect in sport mode any recommendations would be great as my warranty is up in june thanks

    Hello Brian, I understand what your saying perfectly, ten speeds are rarely needed. My main driver is a 2018 Focus ST or occasionally my 2015 Mustang GT. In both of them if I do an aggressive take off I might only use 1st and 2nd and be up to the speed I want and jump right into 6th. I can' hardly believe at the age of almost 74 I'm still driving two cars with manual transmissions but that's what I like in many ways. I'd love to drive one of the newer Mustangs with the 10 spd auto but my 2015 only has about 8500 miles on it so there is no way I'm going to pay 1000's of $s just to get a 10 spd auto.

    Yessir. The shift schedule will change based on current gear and throttle position. There are 14 different shift schedules based on mode, temp, etc. In Normal mode upon normal acceleration to 45 to 55mph, it will go 1,3,5,6,7,8,9,10. Very light throttle will cause 1,3,4,6,7,8,9,10. Extremely light throttle will make it shift 1-2, but eventually will skip to 4th and so forth.

    I drive a manual transmission car, and I also skip gears often depending on traffic conditions. I'll go to about 4K rpm in fourth and shift to 6th for cruising.

    • @volvo09
      @volvo09 Před rokem +4

      Yep, when I'm going slow I will go 1st to 4th in my 6 speed some time, if I rev 1st up to 4k (8k redline) I can casually shift to 4th and lightly accelerate. Less clutch use, and it's fine when not in a rush.
      Some vehicles with manuals even have this behavior added from the factory (usually v8).

    • @Brandon_Nelson92
      @Brandon_Nelson92 Před rokem

      @volvo09 I had a 2011 mustang gt that had 1-4 skip shift. It would physically divert the shifter from the 2nd gear gate to 4th gear. It was very annoying and I got around it by short-shifting into 2nd. I'd usually rev 2nd out to 35-40mph and go straight to 5th when driving in town. Getting onto the highway with an open runway, I'd let it rev on 2nd and 3rd before going straight to 6th.
      Owning a 6-speed 5.9 cummins was a whole different story. It didn't have the rev range to skip gears. Shifting through every gear every time I got up to speed got old after a while, especially in heavy traffic.

I knew better that to get away from Ford. Awesome informative video 😊

    We have a 2018 Ford F-150 with the 3.5 Ecoboost v-6 with that 10r80 transmission and it does skip shifts in Normal drive mode. In Sport mode it doesn’t and on hills it stays in 10th gear if you are using cruise control. General Motors uses the same transmission in their full size trucks and SUVs with the 6.2 v8 and the Duramax 3.0 diesel.

    I have a 2020 2.7 ecoboost w 10r80. Mine will stop shifting once it gets to 5th or 6th gear under moderate to heavy acceleration. Rpm’s will redline until I completely let off the gas. I even lose throttle response completely on rare occasion when trying to pass. This happens in every drive mode but mainly in sport mode. Only seems to happen after trans adaptive learning takes over. It drives great if I clear the adaptive learning tables or disconnect battery for a while.

    I think it also could have something to do with the drivers habits, because the computers recognize driving patterns. When I got my 2019 it would almost always skip 2nd and 5th, but since I've been driving it for a month or so and I have a lighter foot, it's started hitting 5th almost every time now and will sometimes skip 4th

    Talk to us more on the 10spd transmission. I recently purchased a low mileage 21' XLT Coyote. I come from Powerstrokes since 00'. I've turned wrenches since I was 17 and I'm now 60. I can't hustle like I used to and now punch a clock and maintain a fleet for the local Sheriff's Department. This what appears to be a converter or front pump whine is alarming. Also, with the skip shifts - my truck does not flare shift, however it is a very lazy and feels like a hunt shift when skipping 2nd. If I'm crowding the throttle it appears to shift fine and at WOT it's shifting like it should. It just seems over the long haul, that lazy shift is going to burn clutch material. I'm nearing the 60k mile powertrain warranty, should I let the dealer take a look or is there already TSB's out and I'm going to get "that's normal" as a diag.
    Appreciate any info!

    Not so much for emissions with skip-shifting, but improved fuel mileage and better acceleration than would be achieved by going through all of the gears.
    With manual transmissions (5-speed), I do 1-3 and 2-4 shifts quite frequently and, occasionally, the 1-3-5 shifts (If I'm in a Hurry). It really depends on road conditions, incline, and the type of driving I'm doing.
    Experimenting using a ScanGauge and Dash Command, I gotten anywhere from 2 to 5 mpg improvement over using all of the gears, while driving for fuel economy. Conversely, for acceleration, I generally use a 1-3-5 for top-end speed or 1-3-4-5 for shorter range or if I'm in the 4-banger. A lot of times, with a slight downhill grade at a stop sign or light, I start in 2nd gear and have used 3rd when the grade is a little steeper and letting off the brakes give me a good enough roll. On an up-hill grade, all 5 speeds may be required.
    With the 10-Speed automatic, it would make perfectly good sense to use skip shifting strategies. Now-a-days, with the brain boxes and modules to think about all of the input variables, the transmission control module can use only the gears that are needed for the circumstances, in theory. As you Stated, the calibration is " Muey Impotante".
    My Dad had one of the early 10-speed automatics in his F-150 that would lock up occasionally. Once the Dealer did the fix and recalibrated the trans, that was a great driving truck. (Except for the "Electric Steering" that went out on him. It never works correctly for small R/C cars. I don't understand why Ford thinks it would work for long or any better in a full-sized vehicle. Not one of their "Better Ideas". (Picture a skinny 83-year-old dude having the steering go out on him while trying to get 6,000-pounds of truck in the driveway. After 68 years of driving Fords, he swore off of ever buying another.))

The best way to eliminate the reverse clutch being the culprit would be to put the transmission in the lowest position (1 or Manual 1), get up to 25-30 mph and let off to see if there’s ‘engine braking’ in Manual 1. If the engine rpm (tachometer) drops down to normal idle speed and the engine doesn’t slow down the truck, the reverse band inside the transmission is busted.

    If you have an older say 17-19 with the 10 sp, check with Ford for software updates. My friend bought a used 17 F150 2.7 4x4 and all it did was constantly up and down shift, lock and unlock the converter, even at light throttle. It never skipped gears! Highly annoying! They did a reflash and now it shifts like in this vid, and much less busy, more smoothly. It currently has 54k on it. He bought it with 37k on it.

      Exactly Jaspaul. I get a very heavy noticeable and loud clunk on downshifting around 7-5 it seems, it so bad you feel it and sounds like the transmission loses pressure and clunk in the rear end. Also, I have a issue at times shifting into 4th at times on the first initial 3rd to 4th after the truck has sat for a few hours and it feels like it slips or something. It goes to shift from 3rd to 4th and it jerks you forward and the RPMs go up and you have to let off the gas and then get back on it

      Cheap and easy thing to try first is clear the adaptive learning table for the tranny using Forscan. I was getting really hard shifts all around and thought the tranny had a bad drum but simply resetting it smoothened everything out. Drive it lightly for the first day then drive normal and let it re-learn your habits.

    I have a 2020 Ford and I am having problems with the transmission, from 20 to 40 mph it takes a long time to make the changes and I have to press the pedal lightly because if not it makes a very ugly noise in the transmission, after that speed passes it revs better but not perfect, if I put it in sport mode the transmission slips the changes and it is terrible if I put it in eco too, but if I put it in normal mode the changes are better, apart from that the transmission heats up when I use sport mode, Even though I'm looking for someone who has the same problem and has solved it, I don't know what the best solution would be. A mechanic told me that the valve body needs to be changed, another tells me that the scanner shows P076E-00 and he told me that the selenoid had to be changed but he couldn't tell me which selenoid, I'm desperate because I work with that car, yes Can anyone tell me what I can do, I would appreciate it.
