    I just rented a 2017 Ford Expedition with the 3.5 Ecoboost. The SUV only had a 6 speed trans. I took the Expedition from South Florida to North Carolina. The best fuel mileage I got was 15.4 mpg doing the 70 mph speed limit. I was not impressed at all with the fuel economy of that vehicle.

      actually its stupid to compare diesel against petrol. so I don't know what that test is for. or its just because that Diesel engines are more popular in Europe as in the US where petrol is more common. which I also don't know why :D petrol fuel has just less energy than diesel so diesel is more efficient. ur 328i would run as a 330d with 40mpg or even better and much better performance.
      so no offense, I m just wondering why its still common that big trucks run with petrol if they run better with more torque. A month ago I drove the new Tahoe and the engine was awful with all that noise, constantly shifting. not to mention the mpg...

    I think it's pretty amazing that there are pickups hauling 7k with engines of such low displacement. 3.5 liters works out to 213 cubes. Having said that 50k plus for a half ton pickup is Fuqing insane. Here in the NE a dodge pickup at 5 years old is a rust bucket, unless you put it up for the winter. I've seen 3 year old dodges with holes over the rear wheel wells. The ford at 60k plus???? With the chain hook ups that far back?? This wasn't noticed by ford during testing?? There is a lot of good in both trucks but a lot of bad too.

      Derby Racer at the same time, 7000 pounds is a pretty big load so I was personally curious if the small diesel would suffer from a large load and lose its efficiency gain. Obviously if you are going to be pulling 12K you need to go with a big diesel but I think 7000 is right around where you might be between the two, which is why I am very interested to see how that engine performs with a similar load on hills.

Also I know all diesels do regens, so if you could show what mpg and power you get while the truck is in the middle of one, that'd be great! I'm always worried I would get a re-gen while doing something like the Ike and only get half power and terrible mpg.

It was a really nice feature that ford thought of because coming from my '13 F150 to a '16, I really wasn't a fan of the birds eye view because it takes up half of the screen, that is until I pushed the plus sign... Ha! And I just want y'all to know I appreciate every single one of you for all that you do, including Mr. Truck!! I tow a 31 ft trailer with dual slide (about 8000lbs) with a 2001 Ford Excursion which weighs 4 tons (7.3L International T444 diesel) and get about 10 mpg with no mods and she's a dream to drive with all the electronics you'd find or want on a new truck except traction control and lane assist. Truck engine technology hasn't improved as much as you might when you talk towing and these $60k "garage queens" cost so much that any $ you might save is immediately lost in the cost, depreciation, and so on. If you tow, buy a Cummins or Ford 7.3 and fix it up so it's nice and you'll save $30k which = 10,000 gallons of gas or, 100,000k miles at 10mpg towing, not to mention get about the same mileage too boot.

    imho this is one of your better vids, finally some useful data for we consumers. the 7000# trailer is close to the average RV trailer. the Ford latest-greatest eco-bust got only 9 mpg? that is about 45% MORE consumption than the Ram. this for an empty truck! add some load in the bed, and even worse mpg is expected. $60k is a ridiculous price. at this price, a 2500 gives far more capability at the same 13mpg for a 7k# load.

    • @robgrune3284
      @robgrune3284 Před 7 lety

      PS... my maths indicate the F150 will cost about $6k less than a Ram 2500 diesel, but the F150 will consume about $2k/yr more in fuel pulling 7k lbs driving for say 24k miles/yr. so, after 3 yrs the diesel becomes less costly and over 6 years the difference in cost is very significant. if more weight is pulled, say 8500#, the difference is even greater. even by comparing other brands, at a diff of 4mpg, diesel always costs less as the years increase., and diesel has a much higher resale value over time, if all other factors are held constant.

    Longevity goes to Diesel, they last twice as long or even more than a gasser, so factor the price of an engine rebuild into the Ford. Maintenance goes to gassers, DEF issues, EGR cleanouts, and the dreaded P22e error code will keep you broke until you pull the emissions off after warranty.

    Good for you! You got a good one! My brothers 2012 3500 diesel blew up in 2014. I have three friends that got rid of their RAM's after they rusted so bad the beds had to be replaced. This video wasn't a fair comparison! No shit a diesel will out class a gas motor. Especially, for towing! I owned one RAM in my lifetime! The transmission was rebuilt five times before Dodge replaced it with a heavy-duty Jasper Racing transmission. I have no clue how it held-up because I traded it shortly after. Also the paint job was subpar the headlights filled up with water too. Plus all the electrical problems I suffered through with this pick-up. A friend recently bought a 2500 RAM diesel to pull his fifth wheel trailer. On his way to Florida it seized! It only had around 6,000 miles. Ussteel bought a fleet of Dodge trucks too! Their only a few years old and the beds are rusting away and the bumpers are almost gone! Granted this mill is harsh on vehicles, but their old Ford's and Chevy's held up better than that. Cummins isn't a division of Dodge! Hell the Titans have them in their trucks! Along with a ten year unlimited mileage warranty. Why don't Dodge do that! I'm not a diesel truck buyer my man! My truck is a daily driver and I hual a quad or a lawn tractor from time to time. I have no reason to buy a diesel truck! My family owns a farm in SW Pennsylvania. We still own a 1978 Ford F-250 with approximately 56,000 miles on it. It still looks and preforms like the day it was bought. Plus I have a 1967 Bronco that I rebuilt from the farm. Neither if these vehicles rusted like a Dodge. Or the paint peeled! Obviously, you have taken care of your truck. Maybe where you live has something to do with it too. As for Ford not building cars! That was a business decision! They sell more trucks, SUV's and Mustangs. Who the hell wants a car any more! Unless it's a Cadillac, BMW, Mercedes or something along those lines. Chevy and Dodge are talking about discontinuing cars too. It's because their not selling as many! My super crew F-150 has tons of room! More than a Dodge or Chevy by the way. I looked at them all. As pick-ups evolve and get better mileage they'll out sell cars. You like your Dodge great! I had trouble with one! So I'll buy what I feel confident with and you do the same. You've had trouble with Ford's obviously! I've had trouble with a Dodge! People are more inclined to talk more about something problemati. Than stuff without problems! Good luck with your RAM!

    Specific fuel cost is cents per mile, that way you account for the price differance between diesel fuel and gasoline. Ram- 13.28mpg@$2.369/gal=17.8cents per mile;Ford- 9.14mpg@$2.759/gal=30.2 cents per mile. Fuel cost to tow with the Ford is 41% higher than the Ram, so a 1,000 mile trip would cost $124 more with the Ford.

      Of all the crap my family owns (4 travel trailers, 2 boats, ATV trailers, utility trailers, snowmobile trailers, etc.) none of them weigh more than 7500 fully loaded. all but two are 5000 or less. 4 mpg (40% mileage improvement) is a pretty big margin. I get about 14.5 pulling one of the large travel trailers in my ecodiesel that my other family members 3/4 gas trucks average less than 8... Phil, if you plan on hauling up to 11k regularly, why on earth would you be getting a 1/2 ton?? If 10k or above is a serious consideration, then axle loading, thermal management, mechanical longevity, stability, and sheer common sense dictate getting a 3/4 ton. let's be real here.

    i personally have a 2.7 (3.55 diff) Ecoboost 2016 with around 25,000miles (bought with 500 miles) i put these miles on since may, driving all over the country. i know the factory calls for peak performance to use the highest octane, which i agree with when making the engine work hard. however, you are not pushing the truck and the 3.5 (stock diff is 3.73 for max tow package) will easily tow this weight with 85 octane.
    in my 2.7 this what I generally drive. as a person who drives for a living i put 1,000miles on my vehicle each week as an average. i get 3-5 mpg better when i use 85/87 over 91. this is also true when testing in tow at highway speeds. as i am also in Colorado and drive many of the same roads i feel this is an unfair comparison. also at sea level i got 3-5 mpg better. as an average. i get 18-19mpg average city and 24-27 average on the highway. with roughly 500 lbs in the bed at all times. i have also confirmed my numbers over and over again. gear ratio also plays a big part in this. i dont recall you mentioning the diffs. and this can be 3-5 mpg difference as well. im not trying to negate your evidence but i do think it is biased to the ecodiesel.
    recently i took a trip from springs to denver and back with a trailer weighing loaded near 4500lbs and averaged 17-18mpg.
    springs to denver loaded (74 miles), back to springs unloaded, lastly to denver with no load. on the entire trip i averaged 19+ mpg with 85 octane.
    i love the show and watch them all. thanks for the great shows and reviews

    Ford: more power than ever before but the same gas mileage as the old 5.4l v8. I think Ford should take that ECO badge off cause it aint helping much, all its doing is fooling thousands of people into buying these trucks thinking there getting a fuel efficient pickup. Lets be honest, Over the past 10-15 years there hasn't been any real improvements in fuel economy in these pickups, all they do is throw a bunch flashy technology, more speeds in the transmission and bump mpg "1 or 2" points and reliability goes downhill. I garuntee a ecoboost will cost more in the long run then say a toyota tundra even though its a pig on fuel.
    At least Rams ecodiesel is putting down solid number on the EPA and even better in real life, reliability well time will tell.
    Until then ill keep my $60k and fill up my trusty 5.3l gm v8.

    Ok here’s some numbers for you. My 2016 Colorado Z71,4x4,V6 Ext Cab gets on average 26 hyw at 65 mph and average of 18 city, just driving around empty. But on this last trip, towing our 4,400 lbs travel trailer and all our 700 lbs of the wife and I and a lot of stuff like extra batteries and a heater, tools a jumper pack, two spares for the truck and trailer, on this latest trip from Massachusetts to Central Florida, then out rt 10 and then down the Texas Coast to Matagorda, we have averaged 15 mpg at the speed limits without cruise control, because I do not like how often the transmission hunts between gears. If I use the gas pedal I’m able to keep it in the top two gears, 5 th and 6 th. But with the cruise it keeps going down to 4 th and even sometimes 3rd! Even at 65-70 mpg! But if I feather the gas pedal I can do better than the cruise control, even without tow haul mode. With plenty of power!

    nice test guys! Diesel per gallon has more energy than gasoline and this video is fairly good proof of that. Do the trucks weigh close to the same? I think the auto industry is at a near max level of efficiency per gallon all other things being equal such as weight and wind resistance / friction.

      F-150 KING OF TRUCKS "piece of shit hemi shit" lol. they are not testing the hemi, its fords eco against rams eco and the ford LOST. ford has power but that power will have you visiting the gas station a lot more than the ram. but ford owners don't worry about such things right?

    Not only does the diesel cost less to fill up, but it also gets better mileage whether towing or not. I'm getting older and all out speed just isn't in my top priority list anymore. It's nice to have that ecoboost 0-60 but the diesel is still quick enough for me.

    when cross comparing diesel vs gas you have to do a Miles per dollar not gallon. Then factor in the premium that you pay for the diesel. How long will you have to drive/tow to make up the difference?

      I don't understand why this comparison is "mismatched."
      TFL is comparing a 3.5l turbo v6 gasoline 1/2 ton to a 3.0l v6 turbodiesel 1/2 ton...that's about as apples-to-apples as you can get.
      People want to know how gasoline engines compare to diesels in a variety of aspects. If you're too insecure to accept the results, take your sour attitude somewhere else.
      Very few channels do as decent a job as TFL when it comes to trucks and SUV's.

    I have a 2014 ecodiesel. It's been in the shop 5 times for Service Electronic Throttle control warning. I had to change the injectors twice, computer module once, and they replaced EGR system. It currently has about 37k miles on it. They don't know what is causing the issue and they just keep replacing parts.

    10 speed trans, duel fuel systems and it still gets spanked doing what trucks r ment to do,haul. 45% worse mpg and 30cents more per gal of fuel, epic fail ford. as always just expensive shit

    • @bartz118
      @bartz118 Před 7 lety

      Spanked in fuel mileage sure, but the Ram would have been spanked in towing in ike gauntlet that they probably will show in a few weeks. They didn't show it on here but in another video they did the Ram did 0-60 in the 10 second range and as seen in this video the Ford did it in the 6 second range. Also the Ford can tow more (over 11,000 lbs properly equipped in Crew cab) than the Ram Eco diesel (9,000 lbs properly equipped crew cab)

    • @jamesflores9456
      @jamesflores9456 Před 7 lety +1

      oh in reality the ram can tow more just not legaly its about gvwr so the vehicle and load combined ford=less weight so more weight for load ram=more weight so less weight for load even though heavier trucks handle more weight better

    • @crazyhass84
      @crazyhass84 Před 7 lety +1

      bartz118 lol a,tow rating is just that. The lighter ford sucks for towing because it gets pushed around by the trailer. Have u ever towed 11k lbs? I have and its pushing any half ton to the limit. The ecodiesel isnt about speed. Do u know how stupid u sound quoting 0 to 60 times on a truck?! I have towed with both an ecoboost and ecodiesel and would take the ecodiesel everytime. Plus once the warranty is out u can add 100hp and 150 lb ft to the diesel for $1k. Good luck tuning an ecoboost and not blowing it up!

    • @jamesflores9456
      @jamesflores9456 Před 7 lety

      Andy Hass just not legaly remember if you go over the rating and get weighed big hefty fine

    • @bartz118
      @bartz118 Před 7 lety

      No need to get foul. As for quoting 0-60 times, where I live the highway is 70 mph and some of the on ramps are short. Some trucks struggle to even get to 60 and trying to merge in into heavy traffic causing people to move over and slow down causing backups. Which can lead to safety concerns as well.
