I own a 2015 Ram EcoDiesel 1500. I put 40 thousand miles on it and I've owned it for 3 years. It's received all of its scheduled maintenance. I received an engine code that says EGR insufficient air flow. Dealership says the EGR valve and diffuser tube and EGR cooler are clogged with carbon and will need to be cleaned or replaced. $3,000! I drive 25 to 45 minutes one way to work. This should not happen in a brand new diesel engine. It's supposed to have a factory powertrain warranty. I'm being told they won't cover it. I've been a Dodge customer for 25 years. I feel like I've been screwed

Years later and the ecodiesel's have been recalled. The recall fix makes the truck slow and dangerous to drive and ruins the fuel economy. So in hindsight with these 2 the ecoboost Ford was the better truck between the 2.

I am a 32 yr old small business owner who pulls a 10 ft enclosed trailer often. I also pull a small snowmobile trailer in the winter and a 7,500lb cuddy cabin boat trailer in the summer. I've owned Ford all my life. I bought into all the ecoboost hype and bought a brand new 2013 F150 supercrew 61/2 ft bed xlt chrome package. My lifetime average for 33,000 miles was 13.5mpg. I babied it every where I went. Me & a buddy pulled a small single axle 3 place sled trailer from Michigan to Colorado and I got 7-9mpg and vowed never again. I sold it on craigslist and am looking at a new Ram 1500 ecodiesel outdoorsman tomorrow. My cousin has one and gets 25avg 31highway and 16 pulling his camper. I paid 35k for the F150 and I'm getting the Ram for 37k and it has navigation, heated seats, heated steering wheel,9 speakers, and sub woofer, all of which the f150 lacked.

Totally agree with you. But with that said can’t blame the ford for your mistake. Knowing your a hauler you should have never considered a gas engine to start with let alone a eco boost. Diesel should have been your only option on the table whether it be Ford, dodge or Chevy.

When you factor in oil changes, the savings of the diesel mileage evaporates. Eco diesel oil change (dealership) $260. Ecoboost oil change (dealership) $70. Same interval for oil changes.

How are you gonna compare the 2.7 EcoBoost to a 5.7 liter? Wouldn't the 3.5 EcoBoost be more comparable? Probably not. The 3.5 EcoBoost crushes it in torque, HP, towing capacity, etc. Ford will even tell you that the F-150 with a 5.0 Coyote can't out pull or out perform 3.5 twin turbo. Dodge certainly isn't doing it.

that EcoDiesel, if I'm not mistaken, takes around 12 quarts of oil + filter. That's double what an ecoboost would take. The 8 speed transmission on the RAM 2015 oil filter is stuck to the oil pan. Doing a DYI transmission service would cost around $400.

Nice review and I like that you caught the air suspension. Something that I wish you showed was the superior 0-60 times and that the diesel cannot maintain speed up steep hills like the gas turbo can. You say the diesel is king for towing but this 2.7 would blow the doors off this diesel under load in a hill climb or in acceleration as proven on TFL.There is also a huge problem in the UK right now with diesel emissions that penetrate the lungs, kidneys, brain and heart because people don't maintain them. Very dangerous emissions to our health. Hydrogen and battery power is inevitable. Diesel will just slow us down and cause pollution problems like what is happening in the UK.

The terrible trailer setup is the reason for the truck not riding well. You need to take care to level the trailer and get your 10-15% tongue weight. A trailer set up like that causes the suspension to jitter and move up and down more. A level trailer will make a huge difference.

  • @Steven-gv1ke
    @Steven-gv1ke Před 4 lety +2

So the 2.7L is about $800 option, the Ram Ecodiesel is about a $4,500 option. So until you save $3,700 in fuel, you have not even broke even. At your own estimate of saving $700 to $800 (you didn't say if thats over the avg 5 yr life people own a vehicle or per year, so lets assume a year) it will take about 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 years to just break even on the additional cost of the diesel motor. This is not taking $100 oil changes into account versus $35 oil changes for the F150 or the additional cost of DEF. Also I don't know where you live, but in Texas, diesel costs about 10% to 15% more than gas. So you also didn't factor in the additional cost of fuel. There have been multiple well known car magazines who have compared a full 5 years of ownership of a diesel to the cost of a gas motor and the diesel is always more expensive. It takes about 10 years of vehicle ownership in a diesel to truly see benefits from resale, fuel economy, etc. This is why many fleet vehicles at places like Caterpillar have swapped over to 3/4 ton trucks with 6.0L or 6.4L gas engines. There are many well documented fleet ownership with hundreds of vehicles to compare overall cost of ownership and the gas engine counterparts always are cheaper than the diesels. The ONLY time where a diesel makes sense, is if you are making money off it, or hauling something that literally exceeds the capabilities of its gasoline counterpart. Anyone else who purchases a diesel truck under any other notion is just convincing themselves that they made a wise purchase. It is not uncommon for gasoline engines to go 350k miles plus now a days. There was a time where diesels were significantly more reliable than gas engines. But thanks to all the emissions crap on diesels, and the advancements in technology on gas engines, those days are gone. Also since this review, the F150 now has a 10 speed transmission further improving gas mileage. Also the HP and Torque numbers are on par with the ecodiesel as well now.

So you said during the entire video how the f150 was so much better it drove better, had great power, great features and add ons and even more flexible and usable in the cargo area but because Diesel is more efficient you proclaimed that the Dodge was better?....You need to look up winner before saying anything else wins.

I just subscribed. FINALLY... a channel that does real comparisons and actually comes up with the winner,,, not like many who just tells you this and that and then tells you to decide after you decipher everything they said (seems like they are afraid to contradict other ratings or insult the car makers). But I do have a question... I noticed you guys had the Ford as the Truck of the year, or whatever the title was, and that the Dodge didn't even make it to the top two... Why would you then give the Dodge the win, when it obviously came below both the Ford and the Yukon? (again, thanks for being brave enough to contradict even your own findings,,, shows changability)

if you done the math with the price of diesel the ecoboost actually does best it in price wise for fuel economy. also u pay alot more for that diesel the whole.tine you one the truck your the bit of fuel your saing you just end up putting thar into the expensive diesel option

It would be interesting to see a test with both trucks pulling the same weight at the same time and letting the diesel set the pace, because the EcoBoost would almost certainly do better than it did here, poking along at the slower pace of the diesel.
Also, Ram clearly made a mistake with the tow rating of the Ecodiesel, as it seems to destroy itself quite often when hauling heavy loads.

I agree. There is no beating of a good turbo diesel. But I wanted to emphasize that in CA and most of the western states, diesel is being sold at much lower price than gasoline. I looked yesterday and gas in CA is around 3.75-4.00 per gallon range while you can easily find diesel at 3.00-3.10. What Chrysler need to do is to reduce weight of the RAM and keep the diesel engine and it will be a fantastic choice. It will be well worth the price premium.

    • @modmatt1
      @modmatt1 Před 9 lety +1

cassmanio Strange. Local stations around me it's the opposite. At a minimum, the cost of diesel is currently 20 cents more and more typically in the 40 cent range plus the added cost of the additive. When considering these, In addition to initial cost and fuel economy of both, I would think you would have to consider maintenance costs of gas vs. the ecodiesel? Also residual value?

  • @LucasCrossleyGuitar

Would have been good to talk about the military grade aluminum body on the ford. It won't rust. It would have also been good to talk about reliability. I have a Chrysler Town and Country and I've always kept up with the maintenance. It's a total piece of crap. A total money pit. My in-laws bought a brand new Dodge Journey. Within a month the transmission was pooched. I had a Dodge Charger rental during a business trip and it left myself and my business partners stranded outside a restaurant late at night because it wouldn't start. It too was new. While I prefer the look of the Dodge Ram I wouldn't trust it to run for long without becoming problematic. Ford is pretty decent as far as reliability goes. These factors would have me lean towards the Ford. That said, I hear that Honda has redesigned the Ridgeline and because I have owned a few Acura and Honda products I will wait to see what they come out with. I have a 10 year old Acura with lots of miles that's never needed anything but brakes, tires and oil. All in all though a good review and to each their own.

I'd love to have a new truck but after reading posts here I'm confused
    to the point I think I'll keep my low-mileage (123,000) Extended-Cab
    '96 Chevy Silverado 3/4 ton 7400 Vortec 454 truck. I bought it for $3200
bucks. It doesn't have some of the whistles & bells that the newer
vehicles have; it's not a power house but has good torque, reliable as
hell and easy to trouble-shoot if there were a problem. I wonder if
that boosted 2.7 will run the kind of miles mine will. It's not my
daily driver so not worried about gas mileage that much and $50 grand
will buy a lot of gas. These two trucks do good to excellent on
mileage- did the poster mention the gas mileage of these trucks when
towing or did I miss that? I know motors when on boost will suck gas. I
just wondering how much better mileage they get than mine when towing
if their having to run the turbos constantly to keep up. I viewed
elsewhere on youtube where the EcoBoost engines were building carbon
deposits behind the intake valves and causing problems with that and
causing turbo failures. I guess I don't have to worry about having all
those issues, especially if the dang things are out of warranty.

The savings of $800 annually is minimal if any. Fuel filters and oil changes are way more costly these days. I work at Ford and drive a Dodge. pricing ranges from 115$ for oil in a 6.7 SD chassis, $280 for fuel filter service. ff every 15k. Oil changes every 5k . You add it up. It's even Steven when its all said and done in my opinion!

I have 2.7l 2015 f150 and it is a great truck and i get 19-21mpg. However, they need to work on suspension. Best rides are when you have 400-500lbs in the bed.

Don't know what models he is comparing for price but it looks like he has a Ford XLT with FX4 package (FX4 is not a separate model any longer) and a RAM Laramie with Leather interior. It's hard to compare Apples to Apples when it comes to trim levels versus price but when I shopped in 2012 I bought the RAM 2500 Longhorn with Cummins because the FORD King Ranch was almost $8000 more given the same or very similar equipment. On the issue of brake controller the RAM had speed sense and it does have a self test even though it may not be obvious. I prefer the light handling of the Ford. The RAM feels heavy and rather isolated and not as smooth a ride. I had an F150 and I loved it. RAM has stepped up it's game since 2010. Before that I wouldn't even have looked at a RAM. If Ford gets some good engines I'll probably give them a look again.
