  • We are all walking, talking sets of belief systems, but WHY do we believe what we believe? There are so many different things to believe in, yet we all tend to think our beliefs are "right" - but are they? With her photo series, Dutch photographer Maud Fernhout challenges the viewer to ask themselves these questions. Through self-reflection, she argues, we can learn to appreciate the subjectivity of our own beliefs AND that of others', and in doing so reduce (potentially harmful) effects of bias and stereotyping.

Reevaluating your beliefs and keeping an open mind is a great asset to have, especially in the fast paced, ever changing world we live in. Fail to do that and you might just get left behind. Of course, having no integrity what so ever could cause you to drift into dangerous waters and lose your morals and values. I think keeping a level head and an open mind would be a good balance.

I think the reasoning is a bit shallow, as if there's no evolutionary biology involved and we consciously made a decision on all the social norms.

Great talk, thank you! Recognising your bias and seeing it as a part of the explanation of reality and not the definition of it is soooo important. Also, I loved what she said about the natural but also damaging function of bias, and about our response to chaos. The more my life started diverging from my (and my environment's) expectations the more I realized how important looking at my responses, biases and ability to adapt and be flexible is for healthy attitude and mental health. This talk really reminded me of some of that and provided some great points to think through. Again, awesome video. Clear and concise.10/10

Excellent view, but is it practical?
This should not only be embraced by the finite 0.001% who see this but by the entire 7 billion, till then there would always be biases due to identity association.
This one view would then hold good for governance, beliefs , climate change and what not..

young men of 2018...do not listen to this misguided young lady. Crying does not make you stronger. It does not show that you are in touch with your feelings. It does in fact show weakness. Men are supposed to be the rocks of our society. A woman can not fill this role quite the same way as a man. So boys...quit your cryin and grow a pair as they say:)
