Today we’re going to talk about the benefits of taking a cold shower.
For more details on this topic, check out the full article on the website:
    âžĄïž drbrg.co/49QEXH0
    Why take cold showers?
It all has to do with something called cryotherapy or cold therapy. This concept is based on hormesis. With hormesis, what you’re doing is adding a moderate amount of stress to create a beneficial effect.
By taking a 20 minute cold shower, you can increase norepinephrine by 200-300%. When you increase this nerve transmitter, you can:
    ‱ Drop inflammation
‱ Increase your antioxidant network (including glutathione)
    ‱ Increase your mitochondria
    ‱ Increase your T-cells
How to take cold showers to get these cold shower benefits:
Start out with maybe 30 seconds or a minute, and gradually increase the time you’re in the cold shower over time.
    7 cold shower benefits:
    1. Decrease muscle pain
    2. Decrease joint pain
    3. Speed up recovery
    4. Decrease inflammation
    5. Increase cognitive function
    6. Increase mood
    7. Increase metabolism

To anyone thinking of doing this - I’ve been doing cold showers for 2 weeks. The first 2-3 days are difficult, it was hard to work down from warm to cold, and I didn’t enjoy the cold water at all. By day 4 - I felt like my body was getting used to it, I could get to cold quicker, it felt less bad, I could stay under the cold water for longer. Now I go in with the water a few degrees above cold, then after a few seconds go straight down to cold and it feels fine - I actually enjoy the cold feeling, and feel refreshed afterwards and sleep better. I went to the beach yesterday, and normally don’t like the feeling of wading into the water as it feels too cold etc. now I just go straight in, and it feels great.
Seriously try it out, and push through the first few days it will be worth it.

I'm going to do this, and I was sucking up all of your pep talk, but you really lost me when you said, "it feels fine"!!! But I'm still going to do it. It just would have been more believable if you had said "it was more tolerable". Feeling fine in cold water isn't a believable attractive feeling right now.

@@reasoningtruth well I was tempted to edit my comment and replace fine with tolerable - on some days tolerable would be a better word for it. Best of luck if you give it a go.

Cold shower melts away stress. You feel stronger at the end. Also no more fogged mirror. For those with dry skin, it doesn't dry out the skin. Its quicker, since the air feels warmer than the cold water and you want out as soon as you're done.

Now I'm in Korea and I still kept the habit of taking cold showers. I'll see if I can keep at it even during the winter. I notice that my skin has improved a lot. Now it's super smooth even when I don't moisturize. And it's true about joints as well. My knees used to crack a lot because I had an injury when I was 8 and my synovy liquid (that protects your joint) leaked. Now they don't crack anymore when I bend my knees or squat.

I am a 73 year old mental health therapist, working in the Washington County Jail. I introduced myself to cold water immersion in the mid 70's while hiking through the Colorado Rockies. I started using outdoor cold showers (summer time only) in the late 80's out of necessity; wife and 4 children with one bathroom. A little less than three years ago, I purposed to take cold showers (and only cold) every day for a year. I stretched that into two years and now am doing every other day as I approach the end of my 3rd year. I do not take medications of any kind, nor vaccinations, and it has been over 3 years since I have been ill. To be absolutely forthright, during this period of time, I have indulged in 10 to 12 warm/hot showers due to excessive dirt or just feeling puny. Things I have noticed during this experiment: I spend more time outside regardless of temperature with tee shirt, slacks, and bare feet; normal anxiety has significantly decreased; mental concepts about "cold" have changed, and my passion for experimenting on my biological potential is magnified. When you’re sick it’s bad idea, cause cold shower suppress immune system when sick, body will have to work more to get warm, and that’s not good when your sick.Everybody talks good about cold showers, and they ignoring the risk of dangerous expecially for lungs
I did it cold showers for 2 months sveryday, and I felt very strong and relaxed after every cold shower, but I had lung infection after 2 months, I’m not saying that only cold showers cause pneumonia but I knew that these cold showers helped the infection.
Ice bath is more brutal and hard to achieve but it’s much safier than cold showers, cause when you do I ce bathing all body will go inside that cold trauma and body will get adaptation easier , but from hot shower immediately to cold shower ( what I did) it’s not good , cause that will make big stress and shock expecially in chest area, leading to vasoconstriction of blood vessels in lungs, and if is winter time and flu around, that can open the door for lung infections.
I will never practice cold showrs again winter time = high risk -
      for getting sick
Hot to cold showers = high risk for getting sick
If you’re already sick that even more dangerous.
If you want benefits you better practice ice bath, cause cold showers are bad idea.

I spent a couple of months with cold showers in the morning. It was really good once I got used to the shock. I found that regulating my breathing helped with the shock of the cold and tried not to hold my breath but to just keep breathing deeply and within 20 to 30 seconds I was usually feeling pretty well adjusted. It had the best after effect on me and I felt full of energy for the next hour or so and of course wide awake too. It also had the added bonus of speeding up my morning routine which allowed me more time to do other things afterwards. I’m a fan, but it takes daily effort to do it in my experience. I also listened to Shinzen Young talk about cold water therapy during a zen retreat, where he had to stand under a freezing waterfall daily for several months as part of a retreat. He claimed it helped him drop a lot of attachments, which is never a bad thing.

LOVED this. I am healing right now and I went out in the sweltering heat to walk somewhere and man, my body really did some wonderful things, chemically speaking! A ton of my insulin resistance went away! I mean, I couldn't STAND when my blood sugars would drop or when my mind and body started beggining for food but this was greatly diminished AFTER going in the heat! I really enjoy Hormetic effect Therapy now 😃.

I have extended my open water swim season and here I am today still taking the plunge on nearly a daily basis in North Carolina. I can tell you that I am absolutely invigorated once I take my @30 minute tread in waters as low as 42 degrees. I hate missing a day because I feel so good in the midst of it..yes, the first few minutes will take your breath away but over time I can see how my body is adapting and I can now enter the water without gaspig like I did initially. I am hooked and plan on continuing..

I swim in cold water a lot in the ocean, lakes and even got scuba certified 3 years ago in a very cold and deep (50') river. The body definitely adapts to the cold in a positive, invigorating way. I agree that it should be done incrementally to allow time for adaptation.

I've been taking cold showers for over three years now, and I've noticed the colder the water is the better the benefits. Unfortunately, the water isn't always cold where I live in NC, but in the winter months I do reap the benefits of this type of therapy the most, I think. The benefits I've noticed are better cognitive function, decreased stress and inflammation, muscle injuries go away within two baths or so, and my mood is greatly lifted. I would venture to say cold water therapy is miraculous in its benefits. I recently ventured up North to New England for an 11-day vacation, and I experienced the coldest water I've ever been in, in my life. During this time, I was suffering from a really bad kidney stone. It wasn't until I got into this freezing cold water that I noticed a dramatic difference in my level of pain, and once I downed two 20-ounce cups of celery juice over a two-day period, I was healed completely of my stone! I believe the celery juice helped me pass the stone, and the super freezing cold water reduced my pain to almost zero for many hours after each shower. I would stay in these showers for over 30 minutes, letting the cold water penetrate the area of my body that hurt. Cold showers have been one of several things I've done over the past few years that I will continue to do for the rest of my life.

I will never forget how we all felt afterwards when we dried off, got out on the field outside on a cold day. I felt great
I didn't feel the cold and just felt energised. Sod it, I'm going to have a cold bath tomorrow morning.
