Why take cold showers?
It all has to do with something called cryotherapy or cold therapy. This concept is based on hormesis. With hormesis, what youâre doing is adding a moderate amount of stress to create a beneficial effect.
By taking a 20 minute cold shower, you can increase norepinephrine by 200-300%. When you increase this nerve transmitter, you can:
âą Drop inflammation
âą Increase your antioxidant network (including glutathione)
âą Increase your mitochondria
âą Increase your T-cells
How to take cold showers to get these cold shower benefits:
Start out with maybe 30 seconds or a minute, and gradually increase the time youâre in the cold shower over time.
7 cold shower benefits:
1. Decrease muscle pain
2. Decrease joint pain
3. Speed up recovery
4. Decrease inflammation
5. Increase cognitive function
6. Increase mood
7. Increase metabolism

Not in my case. I take a hot bath, then a cold one (which also has the benefit of getting a better rinse after washing) -- so paying for more (metered) water. Still well worth it though!

I've been purposely taking cold showers for years including winters. I've been telling my family and friends that it makes me feel better and that I believe is one of the reasons why I hardly ever get sick. But they all said that I was crazy.
Now I know I was right.
Yea. Me too
I started this by watching Wim Hoff videos about breathing and cold showers
Haha, the same here. No one else want to try. Amazing.
you might be right but that doesn't mean you are not crazy.
I have been having coughs and flu. Since I started cold showers I am fine.
To anyone thinking of doing this - Iâve been doing cold showers for 2 weeks. The first 2-3 days are difficult, it was hard to work down from warm to cold, and I didnât enjoy the cold water at all. By day 4 - I felt like my body was getting used to it, I could get to cold quicker, it felt less bad, I could stay under the cold water for longer. Now I go in with the water a few degrees above cold, then after a few seconds go straight down to cold and it feels fine - I actually enjoy the cold feeling, and feel refreshed afterwards and sleep better. I went to the beach yesterday, and normally donât like the feeling of wading into the water as it feels too cold etc. now I just go straight in, and it feels great.
Seriously try it out, and push through the first few days it will be worth it.
I'm going to do this, and I was sucking up all of your pep talk, but you really lost me when you said, "it feels fine"!!! But I'm still going to do it. It just would have been more believable if you had said "it was more tolerable". Feeling fine in cold water isn't a believable attractive feeling right now.
@@reasoningtruth well I was tempted to edit my comment and replace fine with tolerable - on some days tolerable would be a better word for it. The point I was hoping to make was that I found it overall a positive thing to do, am still doing it now, and that although it feels difficult at first, you will adapt quickly. Best of luck if you give it a go.
@@MrSteeeevo I was joking! I was doing this many years ago, even before Dr. Berg had the Ice Man on. Cold shower melts away stress. You feel stronger at the end. Also no more fogged mirror. For those with dry skin, it doesn't dry out the skin. Its quicker, since the air feels warmer than the cold water and you want out as soon as you're done.
We live pretty comfortable lives and it gives you a sense of accomplishment, of having done something difficult pretty early in your day. You'll carry this good mood as you carry on with your day.
Well said!
I could not agree with you more. I have come up to five minutes per day now.
I first heard about cold showers being good for mitochondria from Dr Gundry, and I am now on the Wim Hof Method, gradually adapting to cold and learning how to breathe much better than before.
I recommend the WHM for anyone interested in a practical way to enter this field of health, energy and strength.
I'm about 30 months into a regimen of Intermittent fasting and finishing every shower with a cold rinse. My diet is 90% keto with occasional cheats.
Additionally, I stopped alcohol about 14 months ago.
I changed several habits over about a year as I was pre diabetic, chronically fatigued all the time with awful insomnia.
I felt really old.
I'm 60 now- I definitely used to be stronger when I was younger, but I have never been healthier in my life; I sleep well now and have noticeably better mental elasticity.
I have not had so much as a sniffle in two years and I have the energy to work out 3-4 times a week again.
I may not feel younger... but I feel less old. :)
I tried an immediate cold quick shower after my exercise. Felt wonderful. Took a nap afterwards and slept well.
Its good before long sleep too
It's actually better to wait a bit after exercise. The inflammation from exercise promotes muscle growth so taking an immediate cold shower will reduce benefits of exercise.

Every day for the past two years, I do the Whim Hof breathing system, and do the cold showers, every morning, and love the feeling you get from these showers, it is the best way to start each day.
I can only confirm that!
Been doing it for over a week and already crave it every morning. Go through all 3 or 4 sets of breathing and then immediately into the shower which I start as warm and then do anywhere between 1-5 minutes in the cold to finish. Definitely feel increased energy and my heart rate has decreased from 60-70 resting beats per minute and will stay around 45-50 resting beats per minutes all day when I start out with the breathing exercise in the morning. The reduction in stress has been noticeable as well.
Yesss!!
Great benefits. I also notice that any soreness from extra exercise is eliminated after the WH breathing and a cold shower.
@@bryanhayes9728 Last weekend I had a hangover and did the WH breathing and it went away after my session. He mentioned it in his book and I gave it a try, so simple and natural clearance ob the body, no pills needed.

Been taking cold showers for a little over a year. I first started because I had extreme anxiety so the shock to my body removed me from being in my head and just solely focus on breathing. Especially in the winter when the waters really cold. I continue taking cold showers because it relaxing, improved my skin, and also helps me sleep at night.
Thanks for sharing :) has it helped with your anxiety 4 months later ??
@@lexik2263 it absolutely has. At that point I was not doing as much cardio either. So once I introduced more cardio and cold showers it most certainly helped. Not only with anxiety but helped my dry skin I get in winter months. Believe it or not you feel a wild sense of relaxation after a cold shower. Then once you step out your body temp is colder than the ambient temperature so you naturally warm up. I feel like it's beneficial because all day your constantly moving around/ working raising your body temp that this cool down stage is necessary to staying healthy. Maybe that's in my head but I love it. I'll continue doing it. Have you tried ?
@@Stephen-655 Thatâs incredible! Yes Iâve been doing cold shower & wim hoff breathing for about 2 months now. I believe it has helped me too. I am veryyy relaxed after a cold shower now though :) sometimes a little sleepy haha. maybe I should make then shorter? iâve been doing 2 mitnues wbu??
The positive effects from a two minute cold shower is without a doubt the biggest surprise Iâve ever had when It comes to health hacks. (this includes intense cardio throughout the years). I feel enormously energized physically and emotionally after a cold shower. The caveat is I canât go straight into a cold shower I have to work up to it slowly. Having a hand-held shower head helps. I am a 73 year old mental health therapist, working in the Washington County Jail. I introduced myself to cold water immersion in the mid 70's while hiking through the Colorado Rockies. I started using outdoor cold showers (summer time only) in the late 80's out of necessity; wife and 4 children with one bathroom. A little less than three years ago, I purposed to take cold showers (and only cold) every day for a year. I stretched that into two years and now am doing every other day as I approach the end of my 3rd year. I do not take medications of any kind, nor vaccinations, and it has been over 3 years since I have been ill. To be absolutely forthright, during this period of time, I have indulged in 10 to 12 warm/hot showers due to excessive dirt or just feeling puny. Things I have noticed during this experiment: I spend more time outside regardless of temperature with tee shirt, slacks, and bare feet; normal anxiety has significantly decreased; mental concepts about "cold" have changed, and my passion for experimenting on my biological potential is magnified. Which is a bummer to me because I'm used to cold showers.
Wouldnât a cold shower help your cold since it raises your immune systemâŠ? đ€
When youâre sick itâs bad idea, cause cold shower suppress immune system when sick, body will have to work more to get warm, and thatâs not good when your sick.Everybody talks good about cold showers, and they ignoring the risk of dangerous expecially for lungs
I did it cold showers for 2 months sveryday, and I felt very strong and relaxed after every cold shower, but I had lung infection after 2 months, Iâm not saying that only cold showers cause pneumonia but I knew that these cold showers helped the infection.
Ice bath is more brutal and hard to achieve but itâs much safier than cold showers, cause when you do I ce bathing all body will go inside that cold trauma and body will get adaptation easier , but from hot shower immediately to cold shower ( what I did) itâs not good , cause that will make big stress and shock expecially in chest area, leading to vasoconstriction of blood vessels in lungs, and if is winter time and flu around, that can open the door for lung infections.
I will never practice cold showrs again winter time = high risk -
for getting sick
Hot to cold showers = high risk for getting sick
If youâre already sick that even more dangerous.
If you want benefits you better practice ice bath, cause cold showers are bad idea.

Iâve been doing Wim Hof for 5 months with 3 1/2 minute cold showers And I love it.
Iâve been doing a 30 sec cold shower in winter after a hot one, itâs not easy but one of the things Iâve noticed when you get out youâre not cold! I love that lol
That's what I've been doing 30-40 seconds. People on here seem to have worked up to way longer.
Love your videos, I had cryro therapy done in 2009 to address precancerous cervical cells.
As usual Dr Berg awesome video, thank you for all the wisdom.
Thank you Dr. Berg. Grateful.
I spent a couple of months with cold showers in the morning. It was really good once I got used to the shock. I found that regulating my breathing helped with the shock of the cold and tried not to hold my breath but to just keep breathing deeply and within 20 to 30 seconds I was usually feeling pretty well adjusted. It had the best after effect on me and I felt full of energy for the next hour or so and of course wide awake too. It also had the added bonus of speeding up my morning routine which allowed me more time to do other things afterwards. Iâm a fan, but it takes daily effort to do it in my experience. I also listened to Shinzen Young talk about cold water therapy during a zen retreat, where he had to stand under a freezing waterfall daily for several months as part of a retreat. He claimed it helped him drop a lot of attachments, which is never a bad thing.
Wim Hof + Dr. Berg + IF and OMAD ....my life has forever changed for the better. I'm beyond thankful.
Edit: Will be ordering a few of Dr. Bergs supps for the first time this Friday as well!
Hi Doctor nice to see you. Stay safe stay healthy
LOVED this. I am healing right now and I went out in the sweltering heat to walk somewhere and man, my body really did some wonderful things, chemically speaking! A ton of my insulin resistance went away! I mean, I couldn't STAND when my blood sugars would drop or when my mind and body started beggining for food but this was greatly diminished AFTER going in the heat! I really enjoy Hormetic effect Therapy now đ.
during naturopathy treatment they advised me to take cold shower/room temperature twice a day, i feel better all the time.
I do cold showers because my water heater exploded a few years ago. At first I hated it but Wim Hof made me think twice about getting it fixed. Cold showers in winter aren't fun, but it really wakes me up!
Great info always, thanx Doc
I have extended my open water swim season and here I am today still taking the plunge on nearly a daily basis in North Carolina. I can tell you that I am absolutely invigorated once I take my @30 minute tread in waters as low as 42 degrees. I hate missing a day because I feel so good in the midst of it..yes, the first few minutes will take your breath away but over time I can see how my body is adapting and I can now enter the water without gaspig like I did initially. I am hooked and plan on continuing..
20 minute cold shower seems extreme to me. 3-5 minutes is long enough for me and I feel tons of benefits. I also live in a cold climate
Yea crazy 20 mins no need
Thanks for the video! But could we quantify it?
1. How long time under a shower is needed to start getting the benefits?
2. What temperature is cold enough to qualify for the benefits?
This Doctor is easy to listen to.
Cold shower stops my skin problem from flaring up so much, warm water inflames my eczema so that's đŻ% true.
I took a cold shower today, because a friend was talking about the benefits.
I knew that Dr Berg would have a video about the benefits.
I Really was surprised how good I felt after 10mins.
Lots of RA pain in the lower body, and I felt weirdly better. So much better I had my second cold shower this afternoon.
Love the videos and I can whole heartedly say that Dr. Berg has greatly helped me understand and improve my health regarding my Autoimmune disease, and many other areas.
I wish I could find a doctor 1/2 as knowledgeable as Dr. Berg.
Thank you, Dr. Berg.
I swim in cold water a lot in the ocean, lakes and even got scuba certified 3 years ago in a very cold and deep (50') river. The body definitely adapts to the cold in a positive, invigorating way. I agree that it should be done incrementally to allow time for adaptation.
I've been taking cold showers for over three years now, and I've noticed the colder the water is the better the benefits. Unfortunately, the water isn't always cold where I live in NC, but in the winter months I do reap the benefits of this type of therapy the most, I think. The benefits I've noticed are better cognitive function, decreased stress and inflammation, muscle injuries go away within two baths or so, and my mood is greatly lifted. I would venture to say cold water therapy is miraculous in its benefits. I recently ventured up North to New England for an 11-day vacation, and I experienced the coldest water I've ever been in, in my life. During this time, I was suffering from a really bad kidney stone. It wasn't until I got into this freezing cold water that I noticed a dramatic difference in my level of pain, and once I downed two 20-ounce cups of celery juice over a two-day period, I was healed completely of my stone! I believe the celery juice helped me pass the stone, and the super freezing cold water reduced my pain to almost zero for many hours after each shower. I would stay in these showers for over 30 minutes, letting the cold water penetrate the area of my body that hurt. Cold showers have been one of several things I've done over the past few years that I will continue to do for the rest of my life.
Thank you Dr. Berg!
"Pain tends to be very painful..." Well spoken.
I've been doing Cryo for a few months now. It's addictive. I feel like I suppose to feel! All aches and pains go away, I want to run and jump after. Also, I feel relaxed and energized at the same time. It is easier than taking a cold shower, but I started doing that too. Getting ready for winter in Maine!
I also was introduced to the cold by Wim Hoff. It is amazing. I now shovel the snow in shorts. Though it is interesting that the use of brown fat and it being used for heat energy is not mentioned. Very fascinating stuff.
I remember how great I always feel after jumping into a cold lake! The energy felt afterwards and mood lift! Great to know about these other benefits!
I take my regular warm shower first. Then rinse with as cold as I can stand it for as long as I can stand it. Building up slowly but it is invigorating. Help then lymph glands too.
In the summer I don't want to get out of the shower because the cold water is so refreshing. In the winter it's a mental battle every day and you have to win.
I take a warm shower, but before getting out I rinse my hair with cool water. Just a couple of minutes rinsing my hair with the cool water seems to help later with the muscle aches.
I do this too. Helps with hair loss.

Stu . Me, it helps me! Seems like you want to dispute it. You canât dispute something that works for someone. Been doing it for years. Doesnât mean it will help you...but have you tried, pretty simple.
Love it when Thomas Delauer and Dr. Berg line up with each other.
Thank you, Doc!
Been doing this for a month, & it feels great during and especially after. I really do recommend cold showers. It's easy to get used to them
- That's good going. For me, I like my feet to be cold. I love going barefoot, or flip flops, as much as possible. People are so different when it comes to what is easy for for them, but hard for others.
How do you get used to it? Hard to even start.
If you're in the northern hemisphere you haven't had a cold shower unless you live in the artic. Comment back in mid January and see how you feel
@@lizard450 is that OK to take cold shower in winters?
I enjoyed taking cold showers last winter. It was fine but 20 minutes was my absolute max and took a while to get there.
Look up wim Hof. Start with Luke warm and work your way down. Give it a week or two before going full on cold in winter if you're transitioning from warm showers.
I always remember at school in the changing rooms when I was a teen, before doing our Rugby lesson once we were misbehaving so the teacher,as a punishment made us all get in the cold showers. I will never forget how we all felt afterwards when we dried off, got out on the field outside on a cold day. I felt great
I didn't feel the cold and just felt energised. Sod it, I'm going to have a cold bath tomorrow morning.
