Eurovision 1972 - Luxembourg

- Vicky Leandros performing "Après Toi" ("After You"), Luxembourg's entry at the 1972 Eurovision Song Contest.
Well, what can I say about such a classic? Long before the contest, everyone considered this a sure favorite, and Vicky's flawless, bigger-than-life performance sealed the deal - thus continuing the early 70s tradition of victories for epic French-language ballads sung by strong female voices, one that had started the year before with Séverine and would carry over to the next year with Anne-Marie David (incidentally, "Après Toi"'s lyricist Yves Dessca had also written "Un Banc, Un Arbre, Une Rue", thus becoming the only person in ESC history with back-to-back wins!). And it was a sort of sweet revenge for Vicky, after having to settle for 4th place in 1967 with "L'Amour Est Bleu" despite, again, being a favorite (legend has it that she didn't want to return to the contest after that, and that it took a lot of begging and a song as strong as this one to change her mind!). Second time was the charm, though, making her the first Greek artist to win the contest, a full 32 years before Helena Paparizou (and the 10 million records she sold with this one didn't hurt, either!). - Hudba
To me this is one of the best Eurovision songs ever.
This is still a great Eurovision winner even after all these years.
This was easily the best song of the 1972 eurovision contest.....and she sang it to the max. Its a pity she didnt have the international recognition that lesser singers have enjoyed.
Not really. Listen to "I Giorni dell'Arco Baleno". A masterpiece.
Clearly the best song ever produced by the euro song contest ever
The best Eurovision winner and best Eurovision song ever! I got goosebumps as a 9-year old in 1972, and I still gets it now as i write!
Same!
One of the best Eurovision winners. Superb song and singer.
Over 50 years later, and it still sounds amazing.

Fantastic song, great singer!
Even when i was only 8 years old when i've heard it for the very first time, i still get goosebumps when i hear it today.

Saw it on German TV where we were stationed (We couldn't get AFN-TV there?) along with my family. Remember my parents both commenting that there was no way she wasn't going to win after giving a performance like that one!

This performance still blows me away - fantastic
Well, Greece certainly bought alot to this world , Democracy, Moussaka and the VERY sexy Vicki Leandros.... raise a glass with me to a worthy winner who can sing in different languages with passion and talent and back to 1972 when I was 10 and ALL that matters was the eurovision song contest... a GODDESS...!!!
After Waterloo, this is the BEST ENTRY EVER in the Eurovision history! ❤️

@@bernadettenugent3670 Hi Bernadette. I think this is the best Eurovision song Ever ..Glynn n Greetings from Stourbridge West Midlands 🌷🌷🤗🤗
This song and performance really speaks for itself. What beauty an passion! Fabulous song and performance! This was one of those year's when the winner was just obvious, really. Incidentally, did Vicky's success encourage Greece to enter the contest (similar to Live Report's Ray Caruana inspiring the Maltese to return after an extensive break)?
Vicky had the best Eurovision song ever. Love her!
Goosebumps whenever I play this. Amazing voice. Love her to bits.

@@ImStevan nah lol
There were excellent songs back then and now.
I agree, it was that period that the best song, usually won from the 60s and 70s. Or came 2nd. And now next year Eurovision will be in Glasgow or Liverpool.
Wonderful. That's the reason why I like the Eurovision ♥
My favourite from 1972
... and my favourite from Luxembourg ever!
I can't be totally sure, but it's quite possible that it did. From what I know, Vicky's win did get a lot of publicity here in Greece, so perhaps it raised awareness of the contest amd prepared the ground for us giving it a try (not to mention that she must have made it look easy to win the contest - if only we knew!)
Her father was the driving force behind her singing in Eurovsion, insisting that although he lived in Germany, she sing in French to have the best chance of winning and thus why she represented Luxembourg. BTW, in 72 throughout most Europe the UK, Netherlands & Germany were seen as the clear favourites.
This was fantasic, adored this sont, a true and worthy Eurovision winner
Fell in love with both the song and Vicky that night
Me too,
I love this song, my favourite Euro song.

Aah! Brilliant song never tire of it I remember when this was announced the winner. Sitting in the back of my mates Hillman Minx with my then girlfriend Christine Smith - wonder what she is doing now
In my eyes, she could contest the first place and maybe win any Eurovision Contest any year,

A Greek singer with an English name, resident of Austria, sings French representing Luxembourg. This is Europe!
MARAVILLOSA.
The best ever
Absolute masterpiece!!
Does anyone have an English version of this song on video? I remember this song from when I was (a lot)younger and I'm glad I've an English version on my mp3 as it's great!
I think the English Version was called 'Come What May' if that helps. As I recall, she did this song in French (as here) German,English,Italian and of course in her native Greek?
Para mí lo mejor de aquellos tiempos, me trae grandes recuerdos.
Great song.
Definitely one of the best Eurovision songs
Classic pop tune up there with Hand in glove by The Smiths... and i mean that
