  • Bill Haley and His Comets 1954 release of "Rock Around the Clock" reached #1 in 1956. It is widely considered to be the song that, more than any other, brought rock and roll into mainstream culture around the world, and established itself as an anthem for the rebellious 1950's youth. The original recording of the song occurred in 1953 by Sonny Dae and His Knights. The melody of the song bears a strong resemblance to a Hank Williams 1947 song "Move It On Over". Haley's version had already sold millions of records by the time he appeared on American Bandstand in 1960. It was also the first rock & roll song to appear in a movie - Blackboard Jungle (1955). "Rock Around The Clock" is widely considered the top traditional rock & roll song of the 20th Century and is ranked #159 on the Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Haley is in the R&R Hall of Fame, and the song is in the Grammy Hall of Fame.

    Lyrics
    One, two, three o'clock, four o'clock, rock
    Five, six, seven o'clock, eight o'clock, rock
    Nine, ten, eleven o'clock, twelve o'clock, rock
    We're gonna rock around the clock tonight
    Put your glad rags on and join me, hon'
    We'll have some fun when the clock strikes one
    We're gonna rock around the clock tonight
    We're gonna rock, rock, rock, 'til broad daylight
    We're gonna rock, gonna rock, around the clock tonight
    When the clock strikes two, three and four
    If the band slows down we'll yell for more
    We're gonna rock around the clock tonight
    We're gonna rock, rock, rock, 'til broad daylight
    We're gonna rock, gonna rock, around the clock tonight
    When the chimes ring five, six and seven
    We'll be right in seventh heaven
    We're gonna rock around the clock tonight
    We're gonna rock, rock, rock, 'til broad daylight
    We're gonna rock, gonna rock, around the clock tonight
    When it's eight, nine, ten, eleven too
    I'll be goin' strong and so will you
    We're gonna rock around the clock tonight
    We're gonna rock, rock, rock, 'til broad daylight
    We're gonna rock, gonna rock, around the clock tonight
    When the clock strikes twelve, we'll cool off then
    Start a rockin' round the clock again
    We're gonna rock around the clock tonight
    We're gonna rock, rock, rock, 'til broad daylight
    We're gonna rock, gonna rock, around the clock tonight

    Bill Haley and the comets really have a one of a kind sound.

    This was the B-side of "13 Women". Because the Comets were late getting to the session (the ferryboat from Chester had gotten stuck on a sandbar) they only had 3 hours to record. Milt Gabler spent 2 1/2 hours working on "13 Women" and gave Bill 1/2 hour for the B-side. Danny Cedrone was not a Comet, but Bill would call him in for lead work on records since Bill had no lead guitarist until after he became famous. Pressed for time Bill told Danny to do the same solo as on the early record, Rock the Joint. This famous solo is still copied today, but Danny would never know since he was murdered two weeks later. Two takes were made and spliced together. It would not be a hit until it appeared in "Blackboard Jungle". Bill refused to ever play "13 Women" because he resented Gabler making him record it for so long.

    The Year: 1954; The Hour: 4:30 pm, The first note was played of the song that would one day rock the world and Bill Haley
    shouts out the immortal words which would become forever the international anthem of Rock'n'roll.
    A song so perfect, so classic it would sell tens of millions of records over the next four decades.
    The song would be recorded by over two hundred artists but none would capture the Comets' special magic
    that was recorded on that spring day in New York City.

      And yet he was not the original artist who recorded it. That would be Jimmy Preston. Besides, this song wa Ms not the beginning of rock & roll! BB King had several rock hits out before this. So did many other black artists! And before you start I am white but blind and Im not ignorant as to what happened in the music industry back then. White promoters and record labels stole songs from black artist and claimed them as their own. Look it up!

    • @visaodissidente5560
      @visaodissidente5560 Před rokem +2

      @@pglover64Wrong. There was a lot of PROTO-R&R recorded before Bill Haley, also by white musicians. For example, "Guitar Boogie" by Arthur Smith (1945), "Move It on Over" by Hank Williams (1947) and "Hot Rod Race" recorded by Arkie Shibley (1950). But it was Bill Haley who defined the new genre. And Country was also fundamental in the emergence of this style, so this narrative that whites took R&R from blacks is fallacious.

    «Rock Around the Clock», также «(We’re Gonna) Rock Around the Clock» (трад. перевод: «Рок круглые сутки», полн.: «Мы собираемся на круглосуточный рок») - песня, написанная в 1952 году американскими музыкантами Максом Фридманом и Джеймсом Майерсом. Песня приобрела массовый успех в 1955 году в записи Билла Хейли и его группы The Comets. Несмотря на то, что «Rock Around the Clock» не считается совершенно однозначно первой записью рок-н-ролла, именно она сыграла решающую роль в популяризации данного жанра. Кроме того, сингл с песней стал одним из самых продаваемых в истории музыки...

    I don't know what "modern-day" rock and roll is, but The Treniers and the Comets were both similar in style to Chris Powell and the Five Blue Flames, who recorded "Rock The Joint" in 1949 on Columbia Records. According to researcher Dave Penny, who knows his stuff, Powell's band were an important direct influence on Haley.

    • @60s70sTheBest
      @60s70sTheBest  Před 10 lety

      I definitely agree Haley's style was probably influenced by at least Chris Powell. The original recording of "Rock The Joint" was done by Jimmy Preston and His Prestonians. Both Preston and Powell have both been identified as key founders of Rock & Roll. Haley on the other hand has been given credit with the "Rockabilly" style, but R&R as well mainly because, once "Rock Around The Clock" hit #1, it went worldwide.

    • @thebrazilianatlantis165
      @thebrazilianatlantis165 Před 8 lety +1

      +60s70sTheBest Haley was clearly the most important person of all to popularize rockabilly before about 1956 (whereas Presley would be the most important doing that during about 1956 to 1959). Hardrock Gunter is the first person I know of to make rockabilly, with his 1950 version of "Birmingham Bounce" on the Bama label.

      @harvey1954 Před rokem

      When the Comets and Treniers were in Wildwood in the early 50s Bill did take "Rock This Joint" over to the Treniers. He felt it wouldn't fit in with his country audiences and would better suit them. I don't think they were interested, but Bill would eventually abandoned his country audience (even turning down an offer to become a member of the Grand Old Opry).

      Not too hard to identify. Several of these guys were not the original players when RATC was recorded in early 1954. But there were never any Comets that lacked talent. Fran Beecher on Guitar. Billy Williamson on the Steel Guitar. Rudy Pompilli on Sax. Johnny Grande on keyboard, Al Rex on bass, Ralph Jones on drums. And of course Bill Haley front and center.
