People are dismissing Poirier a lot, he's got some excellent attributes such as his boxing, conditioning, power and the experience from his countless wars, I don't know why people are considering him washed or out of prime, there's no shame in losing against Gaethje or Oliveira.
There have been way bigger underdogs before that won the belt, for example: Bisping won his title at 37, with one eye, on short notice against a guy that beat him decisively years before, Rockhold is 5 years younger than Michael and was looking damn near unbeatable at the time.

I agree. If fighters that have just fought, deny then they risk that they will get a title shot the next year or ever. But i think Islam's requirements about not fighting a rematch is almost not describing Armans case, because it was his debut, it was close and he has been on a streak, almost ever since.

Imo Conor is not making 155 again, even if he’s beats Chandler. He has no reason to fight for the 155 title right now. He might fight for the 170 title because then he can be the real triple C

@@j.a.g.8689 Call me crazy but his defense against back attacks has improved so much since the Oliveira fight and his ability to stay calm on the ground so I could see it. BSD is a better grappler than given credit for and Poirier defended the choke, stayed square on BSD, and routinely stripped hooks very subtly and also stripped the hook when Chandler tried taking his back. I don't see Islam taking major risk on submissions that could allow escape opportunities for a dangerous striker like Poirier so Islam maybe content to ground and pound and ride Poirier to zap away his energy. Islam is rightfully a huge favorite but if Poirier is disciplined enough to survive and be efficient on the ground with his escapes and doesn't fear the takedown (making him more dangerous on the feet), theoretically he could have at least 2-3 mins per round to get his boxing going against a southpaw who we haven't seen against other high level southpaws whereas Poirier has. Islam's main underrated weapon in the standup is his beautiful straight left, which as we've seen Poirier's best weapon seems to be the check hook AGAINST straight lefts. Essentially he has to have the same gameplan as Volkanovski except with the added power that Poirier packs and has to execute 100%
With all that said, Islam is the best rounded champion currently in my opinion. A clear favorite but I don't think it's as uncompetitive as people think. It really depends on how disciplined both fighters are that night. That's where experience could really come into play. I don't like Poirier on a parlay but as a standalone bet, could get some great value out of it.

The UFC considers him to only have one because the Justin fight wasn't a title defence. I do get what you mean. I do think that Islam's still isn't wholly cemented if he loses to DP though given how razor thin the Volk fight was despite how utterly dominating the 2nd was (also on short notice but, of course, he head kicked so beautifully that Volk was going out no matter what).

Islam just entertained a double champ attempt twice risking solely his belt to the guy the ufc ranked above him P4P. Islam could get Askren’d and he’s triggering that rematch clause. Not even Conor could stop that.
UNLESS Dustin wins brutally and they get clever booking an event inside Islam’s medical suspension so the commissions will sanction a sidestep of the top contender. If Poirier wins, why not a title fight against either Justin for the trilogy because they are 1-1, or Max could fight for the title since he went up in weight dominated and KO'd Justin. Obviously, Arman is a contender and everyone wants to see Conor but Justin or Max seems more interesting to me. Maybe Charles if he wants a rematch and get that win back but seems very unlikely to happen.

Only way I see Poirier winning this fight is if he lands a massive shot out of nowhere like a huge left hook like he did against Benoit St-Dennis. However, Islam is very hard to hit and even a master at striking and someone as accurate as prime Volkanovski wasn't able to really hit Islam with any huge strikes on the feet. Islam now also has more confidence in his striking after his last win by head kick. His kicks and punches are very accurate and technical so I find it hard to see Dustin being able to crack Makhachev like he did against other opponents, including Oliveira
The obvious play for Conor is beat Chandler, fight Max and challenge Edwards for 170 tile, unifying the titles.
If Dustin were to pull this fight out against Islam I think the best case scenario would be if max beats ilia for the FW championship and then fights Dustin for the LW and BMF title.

The lightweight division is already in chaos. Almost every ranked opponent has gotten their shot on short notice, the original top contender fears Islam like the plague, the new one barely skated by, top 5 have been wearing each other down while Islam has only fought one of them once (who bested all the others), and the only ones willing to face Islam without fear are 2 featherweights.
I don't think McGregor wants any real title fights (bmf title doesn't count as real title). I think he wants to fight his contract out and that chase the big 💰💰 in the Saudi boxing scene.
