- This is part 2 of a tutorial series aimed towards complete beginners that just begun their Europa Universalis journey. In this episode we will look at the mechanics behind the trade system and how you utilize them to build yourself a trade empire
Europa Universalis IV is available on Steam, Epic Games Store and Microsoft Store
Steam also offers a subscription service to get access to all additional content for a monthly fee. Worth noting is that if you join a multiplayer game, you will have access to all content enabled by the host - no matter what you own yourself. As a recent newcomer to the franchise, please continue this series!!! It has been super helpful and the best guide by far that I have found.
Glad to help! -Mordred
I played the game briefly many years ago. Just started again. Figured I'd better listen to some tutorials. So many DLC's etc.... And so many bad tutorial videoes here on youtube omg... But you are an exception. Just what I needed. You're keeping it simple and straightforward. And showing what you're doing. No long explanations on your personal prefferences on different features etc, just a few tips. Love it.
Keep the videos coming m8
Appreciate it, thank you! -Mordred
Hello! The first two videos in this series are excellent. My only complaint is.... where are the rest of them? As someone who's tried to learn this game, these two first videos were the best of what's out there. Unfortunately, it's not quite enough info to get started. Do you plan on releasing additional videos in this series/playlist? Did you not get enough views to warrant making more? I for one would LOVE more tutorial videos for the vanilla version of this game (and I think I can speak for all us newcomers), especially from Modred Viking!!!
More will be coming, most likely in January, just had a super busy period with other projects -Mordred
Maybe you could try the guides from the channel radio res helped me with my first game
@@ParadoxGrandStrategy January huh?

@@ParadoxGrandStrategy Its now April so where are they?
you are explaining things in very undestandable way. thanx. I started to try EU4 again from beginning
Got some buddies learning the game and more entries in this series wouoe be greatly appreciated
We just finished recording some more, waiting on the edits and uploads now :)
Bought the game on Humble Bundle and so far it made me realise how EASY HoI4 and CK3 really are 😆 Keep those tutorials coming, I would like to know how colonization works!
every paradox game is focused on some aspect, like hoi4 is focused on economy and warfare, ck3 is focused on diplomacy and dynasty management
but eu4 is jack of all trades, it tries to focus on everything.
colonization is pretty easy, you colonize provinces, and when you get 5 fully colonized provinces in the new world, they become your colonial nation which functions kind of like a vassal, they make their own troops have their own ideas and technologies and continue colonizing on their own....
they basically become another nation that is under your rule, that help you in wars and contribute to your economy, when colonial nation gets 10 fully colonized provinces, they provide you with extra merchant for you to use, colonial nations have their own regions they colonize, certain regions in new world will get you other colonial nations which colonize their own regions,
like colonial brazil, colonial columbia, etc...
but if they become stronger than you, they may declare independence war.
unlike other subjects you can have, colonial nations cannot be integrated.
you cannot have direct control of the land in new world, unless you have capital in the new world
easiest way to learn the game is by trial and error.
as every paradox game, tutorials are either useless or over extensive.
Dunno - coming from CK3 I see some similar ideas here. I believe it’s easier to start if you had experience with some Paradox games already.
Hoi4 is definitely easier, there's just less stuff to worry about
Finaly a good tutorial for beginners
These were excellent tutorials! Do make more :D
Great video!!! Thank you very much! Keep up the good work.
Excellent tutorial. Much needed, because any similarity between trade in real life and trade in EU4 , is purely coincidental.
I would like to thank you for this, I can enjoy this game now that I have a good understanding of how it works.
250hrs and im awful, thank you for the videos. Im going through all of the tutorial ones now.
I'm fairly sure you don't need to have a merchant in your home trading province (which can be separate from you capital) to collect money from there. Instead assigning a merchant there will just boost the yield by something like 20%. Also collecting from more than one place doesn't incur any further penalties. Collecting from NOT your home trade province just has a flat penalty applied to your trade power, which lowers your share of the pie. Unless you've actually gone ahead and changed the underlying mechanics in the last patch.
Whether or not you should have a merchant assigned to your home trade node to boost the income is a value calculation that usually, but not always, means that you do want to do that early game. But if the value of transferring trade from an adjacent or further node is higher than the boost on the yield then obviously you want all of your merchants transferring power instead. Having chained merchants also incrementally boosts the amount flowing down your path.
Very good points, you do not *need* to have a merchant stationed in your home node but I do advise players that generally they should because it does boost the amount you make quite significantly. Makes me realise that I forgot to talk about moving the Trade Capital, ah well.
It's helpful thanks.
Actually, the province where it is based has significance as you need to have discovered it to place a merchant there.
True, but I didn't want to confuse people. I often hear newer players think they need to own the named province in order to trade there at all, and they don't.
Tysm! this really helped because im new to this gam and all my friends play it
Looking forward to more, could you also showcase examples from outside Europe in your future explanations please?
Will try, I mostly use Europe just because it's the area I am most familiar with and thus can create the most useful scenario to explain the topics.
Would really like to see more guides at some point in the future, I feel so far out of my depth. I’m more of a Total War gamer, the Paradox game I grasp the most is CK2, and I am still pretty bad at that.
Thanks a lot! Sometimes I watch a let's play to learn but it's x years (or months! weeks!) out of date or I don't have some dlc or other and everything looks different
superb tutorial. how many trade ships should we send to a node? should we aim to become nation with highest trade power in the trade node or to increase our percentage to some level, say 75, 80, etc.?
why isnt there more :( this tutorial was amazing!
Please, I'm learning the game since I got it from Epic, please, keep doing this tutorials (or link me others :'))
True and it’s super complicated at start
what did you start as?
@@Pasta252t If you are asking me , i found it very complicated so at this stage i quit it , definitely i will revisit it sometime
Very busy with the lead up to Origin's release, but I for sure will continue the series! -Mordred
More coming? Please! Thanks.
Sometimes, often, the penalty to collect in other places is actually worth it to collect in the other place though. Especially if both collections are in end nodes.
The key concept is that trade flows towards end nodes and you use your merchants to control the flow of that trade. You want to collect in the highest value node where you have good trade power, and make the trade flow from other nodes into yours. Note that collecting trade in more than one node (yes, your capital trade node's automatic collecting counts) will drammatically decrease your trade power multiplier. Experiment with moving merchants and check your trade income after they arrive to their assigned node.
I wouldn't call a 10% penalty dramatical. Also if you have a lot of trade power in an end node that is not your home trade node, then you should consider also collecting from there. Honestly it's as easy a question as 'Do I make more money in the end if I do this', barring some niche cases were you want to deny trade from other players (the Ai is beyond incompetent so hamstringing it wont really benefit you).
It's not 10%, its usually somewhere between 50% and 70% trade power reduction, hence we recommend only collecting in one node unless you're *sure* you can control both. You also lose the trade power bonus from merchants chaining trade to your home node, which is 10% trade power per merchant- that can add up very quickly.
This is the best trading system in games
It is incomprehensible to me that people can play these games. I always love the idea of the game, but then I see the tutorials and I’m in awe. It’s just wasaaaay too much to do.
Thanks.
Trying my YAS run on ironman and will be using your videos since they are recommended by devoloper.
But one thing confusing though, is paradox balancing the game based on most used combination of DLC or all DLC combined?
All combined
I have a few more questions about trading.
What confuses me are the numbers. For example, Venice has a trade value of 11 and I have 56%. I earn 16.3 there with my merchant. How is that calculated?
I don't understand the number on the ships. For example, I'm promised a profit much higher than what I'm not transfering yet. So what is this profit, because it is obviously not additional income in ducats.
If I don't use a merchant, then the transfer value drops to 0. So all my Trading Influence will be lost.
I feel like I'm taking a college course
Wow..... it's evident to me by now that I bit off more than I can chew buying this game. 🤯The learning curve seems immense and the type of people who do well with and/or enjoy this game basically play it 20-40 hours a week. I think this tutorial does the best it can given the game's complexity, but maybe it would be better to jump in to a new game and introduce these maps and features as you go along. Because right now yes I get trade is important and all that, but I'd still be lost at how to implement in game. Just a thought
game is very overwhelming but its not that complicated once you start playing it for a while.
yes, learning curve is pretty large. its not a game that you can play an hour a day.
i take all afternoon and i dont even get out of early game.
Hey guys! Great content but do you guys intend to continue this series???
Yes! Most likely in January, just had a super busy period with the release of Origins and the Grandest Virtual Party :)
Will this ever be finished? Is it going to be a once a month thing?
where's the next episode?
when I think of trade, I think of Venice, always. During the Renaissance? Venice=Trade Marco Polo came from Venice. Born Venetian, 1254 AD died January 8th of 1324. Before 1444 A.D. but he was from Venice nevertheless.
Will there ever be an up-to-date tutorial?
nope.
i think my problem with why Trade was so frusterating to me is because i never saw the use in protecting trade in any node that wasnt my capital: i just saw the bigger numbers on the "protect trade" mission were on my capital so i always clicked that.
This video shows than even if you have way over 1k hours you still can learn things...
This is even more convoluted than trade in EU3. And I found that so complex that it was no fun so I basically ignored it. lol
Ok, one question. When I form Italy, where do I colnect? Venice or Genoa or both?
If you collect on your main trade node you gain 10% bonus (because you collect even tho you don't have a merchant there), if your main trade node is Genoa then collect in Venice and use your Genoese merchant to collect or transfer elsewhere, Sevilla for example. You have to test it to see in which setup you make more money to this you make the interaction then wait for the merchant to be positioned and in the next month it will show on the trade tab your trade income if it increased.
@@koffmann1689 So basically you are saying to collect in both of them. Passively or with a merchant.
@@ontheskay6908 I'm saying that you CAN make more money transfering trade or collecting elsewhere outside of your main trade node. Just to put into perspective:
Genoa has: 10 Ducats
When collecting with a merchant:
Genoa has: 11 Ducats
When transfering with a merchant from sevilla:
Genoa has: 15 Ducats
You almost always want to collect/transfer outside of your main trade node instead of directly.
If you have a big percentage of the pie in a trade node and it's not your main trade node then is better not to transfer, but to collect!
You have 70% trade power on Sevilla:
If you collect you'll earn 70%, if you transfer you'll end up dividing that 70% with other countries on your main trade node.
You'll want all that pizza just for you so you get filthy rich and eat more! Don't share it with anyone.
Generally Genoa, reason being that trade from east and west flows into that nodes, whereas Venice is only really fed from the east.
I feel like international trade in real life is less complicated than this
It is
Hello MordredViking. Please add Turkish to the language options of this game. Fix multiplayer sync issues in the game. Although my computer is fine, the Loading partitions are very slow.
You mention that it gives you a massive penalty to collect in multiple places, but i actually can't find that anywhere. What is the penalty called? I ask because in my current game I am collecting in Genoa and English channel as france, but steering all my trade to Genoa.
I think it's literally called "collecting in multiple trade nodes" - check the trade node itself and hover over what you are earning there. Either that, or the Trade Power in that node, cannot remember off hand.
moar videos pls so I can progress from "Reading EU4" to "Playing EU4"
Trade companies?
Trade is so complicated. Better to just conquer lol
No mention of trade companies?
They require DLC, these tutorials are just base game :)
@@ParadoxGrandStrategy can u make one for it
Trying to get my trade merchant to Alexandea but says out of range
as your diplomatic technology increases, your trade range will sooner or later get modifier to increase.
so either wait for better diplo technology or get a province that is closer to alexandria.
if everything is set in stone, where is the trade game?
is this a clicker game?
How exactly do you create rivals. The same way I do? Talking shit? 😂
параходы делают видео для новичков а Дед всё никак((
me brain hurts
this is too much for my brain
this game NEEDS a tutorial. I literally played victoria 3, CK3 and hoi4 but this? i dont understand shit. no tutorial, no guidance, nothing. the GUI is so old school, like its from 90s. thats why your this specific game has such absurdly low player count on steam
Waiting for the 3rd installment... This is worse than waiting for half life 3... Lol
What about the extra merchant you get when you get a colonial country up to 10 territory's?
I did not understand a thing.
i remember that feeling.
eu4 tutorials are worst.
you just need to play the game and learn from trial and error.
use tutorials only if you are looking for something very specific.
You need to be a bit slower at about 2:00 you are hoping around talking about agents and quickly jumping away. Presumably folks are new to the concepts introduced and need time to understand what is being presented as well as where.
this game is waaaaayyyyyy too complicated for newcomers
