  • Trying the betel nut for the first time. Betel Nuts are known as the chewing gum of Taiwan.
It is mainly eaten eaten by taxi and truck drivers as an energy booster. It has a similar effect to caffeine or nicotine, which gives a effect of heightened awareness for period of time.
The taiwan government are trying to discourage the consumption of betel nut as it is a known carcinogens. Most betel nut chewers are prone to getting mouth cancer.

I think that's the first time I've ever seen Mrs. DancingBacons spit anything out. Even the stinky tofu didn't have such an extreme reaction! She's a trooper and I love her for it.

Will , unlike normal chewing gum , you can't swallow betel nuts (too rough , you would rather swallow sugar cone or single-use chopstick.)
spit it out is the only way to eat it.

For us as Indonesian, this is similar to "Menyirih" activities. Using betel leaves (Piper betle / daun sirih), areca nut (Areca catechu / biji pinang), and lime betel (kapor). Almost every indigenous tribe in the Indonesian archipelago, uses it as a traditional or for daily life. They say for dental health and strengthen it. After chewing they emit a red juice like blood. Bitter and spicy for sure, yaiks hahaha 🌰🍃

In fact one of my most vivid childhood memory is of my late grandmother. Everytime we go back to visit her at the village, she would always have her brass container in front of her with all the full set sirih ingredient. She'd spend the whole day chewing until her teeth turns bright red. I used to think she looks like a grandma vampire with blood dripping down her mouth lol.

I've tried betel nut before at my village, from my experience, it feels like chewing on a wood bark, it's really has a bitter taste but not too bitter though, the leaf is called 'daun sirih' in Melay, the leaf is normally use for medicinal purposes but I'm not sure why we have to chew it with the nut. The white thing is 'kapur' or chalk, I think, I don't know.
But when you eat it, it kinda created this weird feeling in your mouth where it starts to get numb and after chewing on it a couple times, it turns into a reddish colour when you spit it out.

We also have this back in the northern part of the Philippines although we usually use the mature or older husked areca nut. Usually part of the offering to the dead but still widely used by the elderly or those living in and around the mountains of Cordilleria. Never tried it though but they say it has mild hallucinogenic property which can be addictive similar to nicotine. They can make your spit red or pinkish and regular consumption will destroy your enamel much worse than candy.
